What attracts bugs and rodents in a house? Usually, it is access to one or more of four essentials: food, water, shelter, and an easy route indoors. Open food, damp areas, clutter, outdoor attractants, and small gaps can each make a home easier to exploit. The checklist below turns those four needs into 30 places and habits to inspect. It is a prevention checklist, not a measured ranking: different insects and rodents respond to different conditions, and an item matters only if a pest can reach it.

The four conditions that make a house attractive

Household pest prevention starts by removing the resources that allow pests to feed, drink, hide, nest, or enter. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) organizes prevention around food, water, shelter, and exclusion. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) applies the same logic to rodents, emphasizing food, water, nesting places, and openings in the structure.

Condition What it includes Typical response
Food Pantry goods, crumbs, waste, pet food, bird seed, and outdoor cooking residue Seal food, clean promptly, and remove waste regularly
Water Standing water, spills, damp equipment, leaks, and plant saucers Dry the source, repair leaks, and improve drainage
Shelter Paper, cardboard, fabric, wood, brush, leaves, and dense mulch Remove clutter and keep nesting materials away from the structure
Entry Cracks, pipe penetrations, damaged screens, door gaps, vents, and utility openings Inspect, repair, and seal routes into the house

Not every item below attracts both insects and rodents. A food spill may be especially useful to ants or flies, while a hidden gap may matter most to mice. Weather, sanitation, landscaping, building condition, and the pest species all change the risk.

Food and waste: 15 things pests can eat

Food is easiest for pests to exploit when packaging is open, residue is accessible, or waste remains available. Store opened food in containers with tight lids. CDC recommends thick plastic, metal, or glass containers; choose a size and material that fit the food and can be cleaned.

1. Open cereal, flour, sugar, or snack packages

Unsealed dry goods expose odors and provide direct access. Folded bags and clipped cartons are not equivalent to a tight-lidded container. Transfer opened products, then wipe any powder or crumbs from shelves.

2. Pantry food in torn or loose bags

A torn package can leak food and leaves a route for insects. Discard damaged packaging when appropriate, inspect nearby goods, and clean the shelf before restocking.

3. Crumbs on counters or floors

Small particles under appliances, along baseboards, or beneath a table can sustain pests even when a room looks clean. Vacuum or sweep edges and wipe surfaces after meals.

4. Food or drink spills left for later

Sugary drinks and greasy foods leave residues that can be more attractive than their size suggests. Clean spills as soon as they occur, including beneath containers and appliances.

5. Dirty dishes in or beside the sink

Plates, pans, and utensils retain food and moisture. Wash them or place them in a closed dishwasher, and rinse residue from the sink and drain area.

6. Grease and food residue on cooking surfaces

Stovetops, backsplashes, range hoods, and grill pans can hold concentrated food oils. Degrease them according to the surface manufacturer’s directions instead of allowing residue to accumulate.

7. Food waste in an uncovered bin

An open indoor bin gives insects and rodents odor, food, and easy access. Use a can with a close-fitting lid and clean the interior when residue builds up.

8. Garbage kept indoors for long periods

Even a lidded container becomes a sustained food source when it is not emptied. Tie bags securely and move them out on a regular schedule, more often when they contain meat or wet scraps.

9. Pet food left out overnight

Dry kibble and wet food can attract different pests. Feed pets on a schedule, remove uneaten portions, and wipe the feeding area after meals.

10. Pet water bowls left out overnight

A bowl supplies water as well as traces of food. Keep bowls clean, place them where spills are easy to detect, and avoid leaving food residue around them.

11. Accessible food packages or cardboard cartons

Packages left on floors, open shelves, or near appliances are easier to reach than food in closed storage. Cardboard can also conceal crumbs and small tears, so move food into washable containers when practical.

12. Outdoor garbage around the house or in an open container

Outdoor waste can draw pests toward walls, doors, and utility penetrations. Keep containers closed, prevent bags from accumulating beside the house, and clean spills around the storage area.

13. Exposed food scraps in compost

Open compost containing food scraps can attract flies, insects, and scavenging rodents. Use a covered system suited to your local rules and keep fresh scraps inaccessible between additions.

14. Dirty outdoor grills or cooking areas

Grease, drippings, and dropped food remain after cooking unless the grate, drip tray, and surrounding surface are cleaned. Let equipment cool, then follow its cleaning instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

15. Bird seed or spilled feeder food close to the house

Feeders can draw rodents and other wildlife when seed falls onto the ground. Place them away from walls and doors, clean spilled seed, and store bulk seed in a sealed container.

Water and damp spots: five conditions to dry or repair

Many pests need moisture, and water can also make a location suitable for nesting or breeding. Removing the source is more reliable than treating the symptom with pesticide.

16. Water standing in a sink

Do not leave wash water or food-soaking water for long periods. Drain the basin, rinse residue, and dry the surrounding counter and floor.

17. Puddles or spills on counters and floors

Small pools behind appliances, under a sink, or beside a pet bowl are easy to overlook. Dry them promptly and investigate why they recur.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

18. Leaking faucets

A slow drip supplies continuous moisture and may dampen cabinets or flooring. Replace worn parts or arrange a plumbing repair, then dry the affected materials.

19. Leaking dishwashers or washing machines

Leaks can create hidden dampness under or behind appliances. Check hoses, seals, and connections; stop using faulty equipment if continued operation could worsen water damage.

20. Water in flower-pot saucers or plant stands

Empty saucers after watering and check stands for trapped moisture. Improve drainage so plants do not leave persistent wet areas indoors.

Shelter and nesting material: six places to declutter

Hiding places make pests harder to detect and remove. EPA states: “Clutter provides places for pests to breed and hide and makes it hard to get rid of them.” Keep storage off floors where possible, reduce piles, and inspect dark, quiet areas.

21. Stacks of newspapers or magazines

Paper piles create protected spaces and can remain undisturbed for months. Recycle unneeded material and store the remainder in orderly, elevated stacks that can be inspected.

22. Piles of paper bags

Folded bags provide layers in which insects or rodents can hide. Flatten and recycle extras, and keep necessary bags in a clean, accessible container.

25. Woodpiles stored close to the house

Firewood and lumber can shelter insects and rodents. Keep stacks raised and separated from exterior walls, and bring inside only the amount needed soon.

26. Brush, weeds, leaf piles, or deep mulch near the structure

Dense vegetation and organic debris provide cover beside foundations, doors, and vents. Trim growth, remove leaf piles, and keep mulch from blocking inspection of the wall and foundation.

Entry points: four routes to inspect and seal

Removing food and water does not prevent a pest from entering if the building has an open route. Inspect both visible and concealed transitions, especially where different materials meet. CDC says a mouse can fit through an opening about 1/4 inch (6 millimeters) wide; that measurement was published on its rodent-sealing page updated April 8, 2024.

27. Cracks along baseboards or behind cabinets

Small cracks can connect rooms with wall cavities or provide cover along floors. Move stored items, clean the area, and seal suitable gaps with an appropriate caulk or repair material.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

28. Gaps around plumbing and utility pipes

Pipe penetrations under sinks, behind toilets, and in utility rooms are common hidden routes. Inspect the full opening, not just the visible pipe, and use durable materials suited to the gap and surrounding surface.

29. Holes in screens or gaps around doors and windows

Repair torn screens, replace damaged seals, and adjust doors that do not close tightly. Check corners and thresholds at night or with the room lights off, when outside light can reveal gaps.

30. Openings around vents, drains, or other utility lines

Exterior vents and service penetrations need airflow or drainage, so do not block them indiscriminately. Fit approved screens or covers where appropriate and seal the perimeter without restricting the system’s function.

A practical order for correcting the problem

Work from easy resource removal to structural exclusion. This order reduces the chance that new pests replace those you remove.

  1. Secure food and waste. Close pantry containers, put pet food away after use, cover garbage, and empty indoor waste regularly.
  2. Clean residue. Remove crumbs, spills, dish residue, grease, and grill buildup from indoor and outdoor preparation areas.
  3. Dry and repair. Empty standing water, dry wet surfaces, empty plant saucers, and repair leaking fixtures or appliances.
  4. Remove shelter. Recycle paper and cardboard, organize storage, remove nesting material, and move wood and landscape debris away from the structure.
  5. Inspect and seal. Check baseboards, cabinets, pipe penetrations, doors, windows, vents, drains, and utility lines. Repair screens and seal openings while preserving required ventilation and drainage.
  6. Recheck for evidence. Look for droppings, gnaw marks, nesting material, damaged packages, holes, or stale odors. Finding these signs means the issue may be an infestation rather than a single housekeeping lapse.

When to use traps, pesticides, or professional help

Prevention comes first. If you use a pesticide, follow the product label exactly and keep children and pets away from treated areas. EPA identifies traps as an option for rats and mice after preventive steps, but a trap does not remove the food source or close an entry route; those jobs still require cleaning, storage, and repairs.

Rodent droppings, urine, nesting material, and contaminated food can create health concerns. Do not disturb large amounts of waste in inaccessible spaces casually. CDC advises contacting a pest-control specialist when rodents are in areas that cannot be reached for cleanup. A local integrated pest-management professional can also help identify the species, locate hidden routes, and choose control methods that fit the building.

Choosing basic prevention supplies

Airtight food containers are the most direct household product for limiting access to pantry goods. Compare them by material, lid fit, capacity, and whether the shape suits the food being stored. Thick plastic, metal, and glass with tight lids are the container types specifically recommended by CDC. For exclusion work, neutral options include caulk, steel wool, and hardware cloth; select products compatible with the opening and follow current package directions.

Inspect the house again after repairs and after seasonal changes. New gaps can appear around moving appliances, construction joints, screens, or utility work, while outdoor debris can accumulate after storms. A short recurring inspection is more useful than waiting until signs become extensive.

What the checklist does—and does not—prove

These 30 examples synthesize prevention guidance from the EPA and CDC. The agencies do not publish this exact list or rank the items by risk. An open cereal box, a leaking faucet, and a foundation crack represent different pathways, and none guarantees a pest problem. The useful test is whether a condition supplies food, water, shelter, or access that a pest in your area can use. Remove the condition, then monitor for signs and escalate when cleanup or access exceeds what you can safely handle.
