You can make a makeup-only Halloween costume with products you may already own: eyeliner, eyeshadow, lipstick and blush. For the quickest beginner looks, try a cat, vampire, witch, angel, fairy, Wednesday-inspired gothic look, spiderweb eye or cheetah print. If you have a little face paint and want more coverage, consider a skeleton, clown, pumpkin, scarecrow or zombie. The 31 ideas below are grouped by style and labeled by difficulty so you can choose a look that suits your supplies and appetite for detail.
“Easy” here means the design can be simplified and does not require elaborate special-effects techniques; it does not mean every look takes the same time or works with every product. Exact application time and wear vary with the design, formula and your experience.

- Fastest with ordinary cosmetics: cat, vampire, witch, angel, fairy, Wednesday-inspired gothic look, spiderweb eye and cheetah print.
- Good projects for a small face-paint kit: skeleton, clown, devil, pumpkin, scarecrow, zombie and half-face skull.

Think about more than the motif: a small eye design generally means less face coverage and cleanup than a painted base, while symmetrical designs call for more careful mapping. Water-based paint is useful when you want opaque color over a larger area; many of the simpler looks can be built with ordinary eye and lip makeup instead. Keep any paint to products labeled for skin.

2. Glam vampire — easy
Use cool-toned contour to make the face look more sculpted, then add a burgundy or black lip. A subtle fang detail can be drawn beside the mouth; the look does not depend on a fully painted face.
3. Skeleton — easy to moderate
Use white face paint or pale highlights as a base, then map black hollows around the eyes and beneath the cheekbones. Simplified teeth drawn across the lips give the skull effect without requiring a detailed anatomical design.
4. Sugar skull or Catrina — moderate
Start with a symmetrical eye shape, then add dots, petal-like details and a bright lip. Map the main shapes first with eyeliner so you can check the balance before adding color and decoration.
5. Heart Catrina — easy to moderate
Combine Catrina-style eye detailing with a red heart motif on the forehead or cheek. Keep the rest of the face relatively simple so the heart stays the focal point.
6. Witch — easy
Pair a dark eye with sharpened contour and a small amount of green, purple or black around the eyes or lips. Ordinary eyeshadow and liner are enough for a wearable version.
7. Green witch — moderate
Add green face color or cheek accents, then define the eyes with black liner. Keep the green to the cheeks or temples if you do not want to paint the whole face.

8. Devil — easy
Use red accents with winged liner, then draw small horn or flame motifs near the temples. A limited red-and-black palette keeps the look readable without complicated shading.
9. Devil doll — easy to moderate
Combine doll-like blush and enlarged-looking eyes with one sinister crack or seam. The contrast between sweet, rounded features and a single sharp detail does most of the work.

Keep skin luminous, add pale shimmer and draw a fine white liner accent. This is a low-coverage option when you want a costume effect without face paint.

Blend pastel shimmer around the eyes, add tiny dots and finish with glossy highlight. A few precise dots can suggest a more elaborate fantasy look without covering much skin.
13. Dark fairy — easy to moderate
Swap the pastel palette for black or jewel-tone liner and create sharper shapes around the eyes. Keep the rest of the face softly highlighted for contrast.

16. Pumpkin — easy
Blend orange shadow across the eyes or cheeks, then use black and chocolate-brown shading to suggest simple pumpkin grooves. You can keep the color localized rather than painting an orange base.
17. Scarecrow — easy
Add warm blush, a drawn-on nose and a few stitched details at the corners of the mouth or cheeks. A small set of marks is enough to signal the look.
18. Clown — easy
Exaggerate the eyes and mouth with a two-color palette. Simple geometric shapes are easier to place than intricate painted patterns and can still make the costume clear.
19. Pennywise-inspired clown — moderate
Draw red lines extending from the mouth toward the eyes, then sharpen the rest of the design with graphic shapes. Keep the lines even on both sides by sketching their paths lightly before filling them in.

20. Doll — easy
Use rounded blush, make the eyes look larger with a defined upper lash line, and paint a lower lash line beneath the natural eye. Leave a small gap between the real lower lashes and the drawn line for a more open-eyed effect.
21. Porcelain doll — moderate
Create a pale-looking complexion, add a muted lip and draw a few cracks with fine liner. Fewer, deliberate cracks usually read more clearly than a dense network of lines.

Pair a pale-looking base with dark eyes and a deep lip. This character-inspired makeup can be done with familiar cosmetics and does not require painted effects.

24. Zombie — moderate
Blend gray-green shading into the cheeks and eye area, add bruised-looking color, and keep the liner uneven. Work in layers so the shading looks irregular rather than like a single flat block of color.
25. Stitched-mouth illusion — easy to moderate
Draw short liner stitches across or beside the mouth, then shade around the edges with red or a darker shadow. Avoid applying color inside the mouth or on the waterline.

26. Half-face skull — moderate
Keep one side in your regular makeup and map a simplified skull on the other. Mark the center line first, then add the skull-side eye hollow, cheek shading and teeth so the two halves stay distinct.
27. Butterfly — easy to moderate
Paint symmetrical wings around the eyes with a bright color. Sketch a light outline on both sides before filling the wings to make the design easier to balance.
28. Spiderweb eye — easy
Draw a small web radiating from one eye with black liner. Keep the lines fine and build the web outward from a few spokes instead of trying to draw a dense pattern at once.
29. Galaxy or alien — easy to moderate
Blend blue, purple and silver around the eyes or temples, then add star-like dots. A concentrated patch of color can create the effect without a full-face base.

Start with products you already use and add only what your chosen design requires. Teen Vogue notes that eyeshadow, lipstick and blush may be enough for some looks and names Mehron Makeup Liquid Face and Body Paint as a product option. Glamour describes Snazaroo as easy to find and hypoallergenic; that description is not a guarantee that a product will suit every person, so follow its label and patch-test it if it is unfamiliar to you.
- For a low-coverage look: eyeliner, eyeshadow, blush and lipstick can cover ideas such as the cat, witch, angel, doll, Wednesday-inspired look or spiderweb eye.
- For larger painted areas: use face paint labeled for skin, such as a water-based formula where appropriate, rather than assuming ordinary craft paint is suitable.
- For fine details: a liner or small brush helps with whiskers, stitches, webs and graphic shapes.
- For added texture: use stickers or decorative details only as directed for skin and keep them away from eyes and the waterline.
Prep, apply and remove makeup carefully
- Moisturize. Start with clean skin and your usual moisturizer.
- Prime if appropriate. Ulta recommends primer as part of preparation for heavy makeup or face paint. Choose a base compatible with the formula you plan to use.
- Sketch the design. Use liner to place the main shapes before adding larger areas of color. Check symmetry where the design calls for it.
- Add cream or water-based color. Use a product intended for skin, and follow its directions.
- Build shadows and highlights. Add smaller details after the base shapes are in place.
- Set only if the formula allows. Follow product directions rather than applying setting products automatically.
- Check the finished look. Take a photo in the lighting where you expect to be seen; this can help you spot gaps or uneven shapes.
- Remove gently. Use a remover suitable for the products you applied and avoid scrubbing around the eyes.
For water-based face paint, makeup artist and Lanii Doa Artistry founder Jessica Bonilla advises: “You should avoid oil-based products if you’re using water-based face paints, as it will be difficult for the pigment to adhere and you won’t have as much control over the final result.” Formula compatibility matters, so check the specific product directions.
