A former garage and storage outbuilding near the Pont du Gard became a 325-square-foot guest house by treating geometry, not partitions, as the organizing tool. Le Cann architects Raphaëlle Robert and Guillaume Fantin retained the roof’s ridge beam, built a symmetrical plan around it, and used two arched ceiling volumes to hide services and separate functions. Sisal, cloudy whitewashed surfaces, stainless steel, travertine, smoked glass, and carefully chosen vintage pieces give the tiny interior a moody, polished identity without making it feel crowded. The project is documented in Architectural Digest’s March 21, 2023 feature.

This is not a miniature version of a conventional house. It is an outbuilding near the Pont du Gard in southern France that had been used as a garage and storage room. The owners hoped to turn it into a bed-and-breakfast guest house. Before work began, it had a Provençal tile roof but little else that suggested domestic comfort: a rough slab floor, cinder-block walls, and a makeshift ceiling.
The architects’ task was therefore both practical and atmospheric. They had to fit sleeping, bathing, cooking, working, dressing, and sitting into 325 square feet while giving an anonymous utility structure a distinct character. Robert summarized the challenge this way: “We had to give a soul to a structure that was totally devoid of one.”

The result is open-plan, but not undifferentiated. Instead of filling the room with freestanding dividers, Le Cann made the ceiling, floor, wall thickness, and material changes do the work of zoning. The feature calls the finished space “moody and chic,” yet its mood comes from restraint and contrast rather than from a dark color scheme alone.
The original shell and the design problem
A service building with a useful roof
The existing Provençal roof was the project’s strongest architectural asset. Its ridge beam was retained rather than concealed, giving the designers a clear central axis. That decision established a visual spine through the small plan and allowed the new interior to feel intentional instead of compressed.

They supplied no finished surfaces, storage, or visual hierarchy. Every new element had to earn its place, and technical systems had to be hidden without losing the openness that made the room feel larger.
Why the axis matters
Guillaume Fantin explains that the practice works with “a very minimalist envelope, drawn along symmetrical axes.” In this project, symmetry is not a decorative flourish. It makes a compact plan legible. Once the ridge beam defines the centerline, the eye can understand where the room begins and ends even though there are no full-height partitions.
How the open plan is divided without walls
Two arched ceiling volumes
Two arched volumes rise within the roof space. They conceal technical elements and establish the room’s organization overhead. Their curved profiles create a sequence of smaller-scale spaces while leaving the floor visually continuous.

Robert describes the strategy as using “the play of volumes rather than partitions and half partitions to bring order to a consciously open space.” The distinction is important: the arches do not merely decorate the ceiling. They carry infrastructure, mark transitions, and give each activity a recognizable address.
Functions arranged on opposite sides
| Area | Placement or device | How it contributes to the plan |
|---|---|---|
| Kitchen and bathroom | Grouped on one side of the central axis | Concentrates plumbing and service functions, leaving the opposite side available for living and sleeping. |
| Bedroom, office, and dressing area | Arranged on the other side | Creates a domestic sequence without enclosing each use in a separate room. |
| Living area | Steps and risers forming a central bench | Provides seating and a change in level that signals the social heart of the guest house. |
| Storage and work surface | Closet and small desk integrated into the walls | Keeps daily-use items and work functions from consuming the floor area. |
The plan’s success depends on several small cues working together. A person can move from the kitchen toward the sleeping side without passing through a corridor, yet the materials, ceiling shapes, and built-in elements make the change of use apparent.
Material changes create the room’s atmosphere
Sisal from floor to bed base
Tightly woven sisal covers the floor and the bed base. Using one tactile material underfoot and beneath the mattress visually joins the sleeping zone to the larger room. Sisal also introduces a dry, natural texture that keeps the metal and stone finishes from becoming overly hard or clinical.
For a less permanent adaptation, a sisal area rug can bring a similar surface note to an existing room, although it will not reproduce the fitted floor or the wrapped bed platform in this project.
Cloudy whitewashed walls and ceiling
The walls and ceiling have a matte, cloudy whitewashed finish; the image caption identifies Ressource. White is doing more than reflecting light. Its uneven, atmospheric quality softens the geometry of the arches and keeps the compact volume from reading as a crisp box.

Because the finish is matte, it absorbs rather than bounces light in a glossy way. That supports the subdued mood and allows the reflective kitchen and bathroom elements to become deliberate accents instead of competing with a shiny envelope.
A graphic stainless-steel kitchen
Stainless-steel cabinets introduce a strong counterpoint to the pale, chalky shell. Their graphic grid pattern gives the kitchen a measured rhythm, while brushed steel, chrome, and smoked glass appear elsewhere in the room. The metal surfaces make the service side unmistakable without requiring a visual wall.
This contrast also prevents the whitewashed finish from becoming rustic shorthand. The kitchen reads as contemporary and precise, while the plaster-like surfaces retain a connection to the building’s southern French setting.
Travertine that reads as carved
In the bathroom, the walk-in shower and basin are made from travertine. The feature describes them as appearing carved from a single block. The architects chose the stone for its “very cloudy appearance, full of flaws,” so the irregularities are part of the intended character rather than defects to be hidden.
Travertine gives the wet area a visual weight that balances the light ceiling. It also makes the bathroom recognizable from the open room: a change in stone signals a change in function more efficiently than a narrow partition would.

Textiles that keep the hard finishes livable
The central bench has cushions in Huahune, a tight-weave cotton by Nobilis. Curtains use Adelphi by Dedar and Ora Shell by Romo. These fabrics add softness and pattern at eye level, where a visitor experiences the bench and sleeping area, while remaining controlled enough for the minimalist envelope.
Furniture, lighting, and objects: a controlled mix of eras
The project does not rely on a matching furniture suite. A restored and relacquered gold screen supplies a warm, reflective note. The lighting includes the Gulp desk lamp by Ingo Maurer and the Parentesi lamp by Achille Castiglioni. Furniture from Le Cann’s Muses collection sits alongside an antique coffee set and works by Gaultier Rimbault-Joffard, Aliska Lahusen, Giuliano Mancini, Giorgio de Tonti, and Gaby Edrei.
These pieces help explain why the room feels collected rather than themed. The gold screen and antique coffee set acknowledge older decorative traditions; the lamps and contemporary furniture add a sharper, late-20th-century vocabulary. The designers also draw on 1970s and 1980s pop references, but the feature presents those references as restrained accents, not as a period recreation.

The feature notes that the building has few openings and describes limited light as a “saving grace” when temperatures reach 104 degrees. That number belongs to the article’s description of this project’s context. It is not an independently verified climate statistic, a measured indoor result, or a test of cooling or energy performance.

Architecturally, the point is that the restrained openings influence the atmosphere. The interior is intentionally less sun-flooded than a conventional glazed room, so the matte white surfaces, metal highlights, and carefully placed lamps become important to how the space is perceived. A reader adapting the idea elsewhere should assess local daylight, ventilation, glazing requirements, and heat gain rather than treating the French outbuilding’s opening strategy as a universal solution.
What makes the space feel larger than its footprint
- A visible central axis: the retained ridge beam gives the eye a long direction to follow.
- Continuous flooring: sisal runs through the open plan instead of stopping at multiple thresholds.
- Built-in functions: the closet and desk occupy wall depth, preserving the circulation zone.
- Vertical organization: the arched volumes create separate addresses for activities without cutting up the floor.
- Material hierarchy: whitewashed surfaces form the envelope, metal marks the kitchen, and travertine marks the wet room.
- A limited object count: individual lamps, art, and vintage pieces are prominent because they are not competing with a crowded collection.
None of these choices makes the building physically larger. They reduce visual conflict, so the available area can be read as one coherent interior rather than a series of undersized rooms.
How to adapt the approach in another small renovation
Le Cann’s solution belongs to this particular roof, climate, and brief. It can still serve as a useful design process for a garage conversion or compact guest suite, provided the sequence is adjusted to local building rules and existing conditions.
- Document the shell first. Measure the footprint, ceiling heights, roof structure, slab, openings, and service connections. Identify any beam or truss that can become an organizing line instead of assuming it must be hidden.
- Draw a single circulation axis. Place the most important movement path on the clearest line through the room. Test whether sleeping, bathing, cooking, and working can be reached without forcing circulation through one activity.
- Group wet and service functions. Keeping the kitchen and bathroom near existing plumbing can reduce complexity and leave more wall length for storage or a desk. Confirm feasibility with a qualified local professional.
- Use one spatial device to mark several zones. A ceiling arch, dropped volume, change in level, or thickened wall can conceal services and signal a transition at the same time. Do not add a decorative form that has no functional role.
- Choose an envelope finish before accent materials. A matte, pale surface can establish the overall light level. Add reflective metal or stone only after deciding where contrast is needed.
- Build storage into the perimeter. Integrate closets, shelves, and a compact work surface into wall depth wherever possible. Keep frequently used items within reach and reserve the central floor for movement and seating.
- Specify textiles for acoustics and comfort. Tight-weave upholstery, curtains, and a natural-fiber floor covering can temper the sound of hard surfaces while reinforcing the material story.
- Layer old and new deliberately. One restored object, one sculptural light, and a small number of artworks can provide character without turning the room into a display cabinet.
- Check climate and code assumptions independently. Window area, egress, insulation, ventilation, moisture control, and fire safety must be resolved for the actual location; the French example does not establish compliance or performance elsewhere.
What this single project can—and cannot—prove
The guest house demonstrates one convincing way to organize a very small former utility building. It shows that an open plan can still have distinct functions when geometry, built-ins, and materials carry the zoning. It also shows how regional references can coexist with contemporary metal, glass, and lighting.
It does not establish a universal small-space formula, a measured energy strategy, or a comparative advantage over partitioned layouts. The available figures are the reported 325-square-foot size and the article’s 104-degree context. No broader study or statistical dataset is attached to those details. Decisions about another property should therefore begin with its structure, climate, daylight, services, and regulations.
The design takeaway
This former garage became moody and chic by gaining order before it gained decoration. The ridge beam supplied a centerline; arched volumes hid infrastructure and shaped the plan; integrated storage protected the floor area; and a disciplined palette separated kitchen, living, sleeping, and bathing zones. Sisal, cloudy whitewash, stainless steel, travertine, vintage gold, and late-20th-century references then gave the compact shell its personality.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe most transferable lesson is not to copy a particular arch or finish. It is to make every major intervention perform more than one job: structure can guide circulation, a ceiling can conceal services, a material can identify a zone, and a built-in can replace a piece of furniture. That is how this 325-square-foot outbuilding feels composed rather than merely compressed.
