Seashells can become framed art, flowers, jewelry, mobiles, mirrors, ornaments, and small sculptures. Here are 33 buildable seashell craft ideas, ranging from no-cut glue projects to more involved hanging and mosaic designs. Use only sturdy, legally obtained craft shells; leave living, rare, fragile, or culturally significant shells where they are.
Before making a seashell craft
Choose shells responsibly
The National Museum of the Philippines advises leaving shells and shell fragments on the shore because other organisms depend on them. Do not collect live shells, protected species, or large quantities, and check the rules for the beach, park, or shoreline where you are. The same guidance recommends avoiding purchased shell handicrafts when their sourcing is unclear.
Separate craft shells from specimens
Rare, delicate, collectible, or historically important shells should be preserved rather than altered. Welsh Museums Federation collection-care guidance says never to soak shells or clean them abrasively. For a sturdy, non-porous shell that genuinely needs cleaning, apply mild soapy water locally, rinse sparingly, and dry it immediately. Avoid coatings and adhesives on valuable specimens because they can discolor or embrittle over time.

Basic supplies
- Clean, dry shells in complementary sizes
- Cardboard, wood, canvas, bamboo, wire, or a purchased frame
- Craft glue or a glue gun, used only after checking that it suits both surfaces
- Scissors, pencil, ruler, paint, brushes, and acrylic sealer if appropriate
- String, ribbon, jump rings, jewelry findings, or binding wire
- Eye protection and adult supervision for cutting, drilling, or hot glue
D’source’s shell-flower example uses a base shell, paired shells as petals, leaves, glue from a glue gun, bamboo sticks, binding wire, and cutting pliers. Treat that as one assembly method, not a universal adhesive recipe.

Respect cultural shellwork
Shellwork is not only a generic beach craft. The National Museum of Australia documents La Perouse shellwork as a First Nations women’s tradition associated with artists including Esme Timbery. Its history includes souvenir production and contemporary-art recognition. Learn from credited Indigenous artists and institutions, and do not copy culturally specific motifs or present that living tradition as anonymous DIY decoration.
