Mother-daughter tattoos can match exactly, complement each other, or carry a private meaning only the two of you know. The strongest choice is one you would each still want on your own: start with a shared memory or symbol, decide how connected the designs should be, then settle on size and placement together.

How to choose a design you will both want
Before settling on a sketch, talk through what each of you wants the tattoo to do. One person may want a visible reminder; the other may prefer a discreet symbol. A shared tattoo does not have to be identical to feel connected.

If not, refine the idea until it feels personally right to both.
- Relationship between designs: Choose identical tattoos for a direct match, complementary images for individuality, or connected halves if the pair should form one image together.
- Clarity at the intended size: Ask how the design will read at the size and placement you want. A simple design can be a good direction for a first tattoo, as Parade notes; avoid packing a complex reference into an area too small to show it clearly.
- Visibility: Decide whether you want to see the tattoo easily or keep it more discreet. If school or work expectations matter, consider them without assuming a particular placement guarantees acceptance.
- Artist’s style: Look for a professional portfolio that shows work in the style you want, such as fine line or minimalist drawing. A recommendation or online comment can be a lead, not proof of quality.
- Long-term comfort: Make sure both people are comfortable with the design as a lasting choice. The FDA says permanent tattoos are designed to last a lifetime and can be difficult to remove.
Placement and artist choice
Placement depends on personal comfort, visibility, the shape and detail of the design, and any practical limits that matter to either of you. There is no single best location for every mother-daughter pair. When discussing a design with an artist, bring the same reference image and explain whether the tattoos should match exactly, coordinate, or connect only when you are side by side. Ask to see portfolio examples at a comparable scale and in the style you have in mind.

Consider skin health as well as appearance. The American Academy of Dermatology advises considering placement on skin free of moles because a tattoo can make early signs of skin cancer harder to see. Rules and oversight for tattooing vary by state and local authority, so check the requirements where you plan to get tattooed.
What to know about permanence and safety
A tattoo is more than a matching design decision. The FDA reports that infections can result from unhygienic practices or contaminated ink, and that ink can cause allergic reactions. Even sealed ink containers can harbor microorganisms. The FDA has not approved pigments for injection into skin for cosmetic purposes; local and state authorities generally oversee tattooing practice, and requirements vary.

Do not assume a decal or henna is a risk-free way to preview a design. The FDA has received reports of adverse reactions involving decal tattoos. Its fact sheet says henna is approved only as a hair dye, not for direct application to skin; black henna may contain PPD, which is associated with dangerous reactions. A sketch or artist consultation avoids treating a skin-applied alternative as automatically safe.

Follow the tattooist’s care instructions and contact a health professional if the tattoo is not healing or a rash develops, especially if you have a fever. If you suspect an ink reaction, contact the tattooist as well so they can identify the ink, as the FDA advises.

For tattooed skin that feels dry, the AAD recommends a water-based lotion or cream; it notes that petroleum-based products such as petroleum jelly can cause ink to fade. For sun exposure, the AAD recommends broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30 or higher, applied 15 minutes before going outside and reapplied at least every two hours. Consult a board-certified dermatologist about a reaction or skin change.
