3D-printed lace fabric is not one standardized material. The term can mean an openwork structure printed on its own, a lace-like motif printed onto conventional fabric, or a textile design inspired by lace-making. The clearest documented example is flexible TPU printed by fused deposition modeling (FDM) directly onto polyester voile, creating a composite rather than a standalone lace cloth.
What is 3D-printed lace fabric?
It is a broad description for lace-like textile structures made or partly made through digital fabrication. In one approach, a printer creates the openwork structure itself. In another, it deposits a motif onto a textile substrate, which supports the printed pattern. Other work borrows lace-making methods or geometry to design textile structures, including structures that are not conventional fabric.
These approaches differ in material, construction, and intended use. “3D-printed lace” does not name a particular fiber, a single printing process, or a standardized retail product.

In Sunhee Lee’s 2018 study, the researchers prepared lace-type 3D models at different thicknesses, converted the designs into G-code, and used FDM to print thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) onto polyester voile. The voile remained part of the finished structure, so the result was a printed-textile composite.

The study reported a nozzle speed of 50 mm/s, a nozzle temperature of 235°C, and a heated-bed temperature of 40°C. Those are conditions used in that experiment, not general settings for every TPU, printer, or fabric. The study also found that increasing print thickness increased its measured KOSHI, NUMERI, and FUKURAMI hand values; its authors considered the tested composites applicable to women’s summer garments. How do design and processing affect performance?
There is no universal strength or flexibility rating for 3D-printed lace. Motif geometry, print thickness, substrate, and post-print processing can all affect how a particular sample behaves.

Motif size and roller processing
A 2019 study compared TPU FDM lace-style textiles and voile composites with different motif sizes and roller processing. For its large-pattern 3dLaceM1 sample, the authors reported a maximum load of 13.2 kgf and elongation of 274.3%. The roller-pressed 3dLaceM1/voile composite had a maximum load of 35.4 kgf, elongation of 383.9%, and initial modulus of 20.56 kgf/mm². The study found that motif size and roller processing affected tensile behavior and stiffness; these sample results are not product specifications or a general ranking of patterns. A 2024 study tested 15 FDM-printed textile structures made with flexible TPU filament. Its strongest tested structure resisted up to 460 N in a ball-burst test. That result shows the range tested in broader printed-textile research; it is not a lace-fabric result. Read the 2024 study.

Can it be washed or used for clothing?
Lee’s 2018 study reported grades of 4–5 for all samples in its washing and dry-cleaning resistance tests. This applies only to the tested TPU/voile samples and those test conditions; it does not establish how other prints, fabrics, or finished garments will hold up in care.
Apparel use is a research direction, not evidence of a mature mass-market category. A 2022 fashion-design study proposed customized garments using 3D printing and lace techniques. Its design process examined 12 lace-bottom designs, three motifs, and two fastening types. The work supports the exploration of garment design, not commercial scale or consumer adoption. A 2025 study examined drapability in 3D-printed auxetic structures for wearable products and compared printed samples with traditional lace fabrics. Auxetic structures are related textile research, not necessarily the same construction as TPU printed onto voile. Read the 2025 study.

How is lace-inspired fabrication evolving?
Some research takes inspiration from lace-making without producing the same kind of fabric as the TPU/voile composite. The 2021 “Tailored Lace” paper describes a computational workflow for designing and fabricating 3D bio-composite structures informed by bobbin-lace techniques and structural criteria. It is a design and fabrication direction, not evidence of a commercially available clothing material. Read “Tailored Lace”.

In a report published on 25 September 2026, Aalto University described work combining bobbin-lace techniques, active materials, and computer modeling to create structures that can change shape in response to environmental changes such as temperature. This is lace-making-inspired active textile research, distinct from FDM-printed TPU on voile. Read the Aalto University report.
What to consider when prototyping
TPU filament is the clearest physical-material connection in the cited studies. A hands-on prototype would also require an FDM printer compatible with flexible filament, but the studies do not recommend a retail printer or establish a universal recipe.
