To defuzz a sweater, match the tool to what you see: use a lint roller for loose lint, a sweater comb for controlled removal on delicate knits, a sweater stone for suitable fabrics, or an electric fabric shaver for stubborn pills on compatible garments. Check the sweater’s care label and the tool instructions, then test a hidden area and work gently.
Why sweaters pill—and what “defuzzing” removes
Pilling happens when loosened fibers gather into small balls on a fabric’s surface. Friction from wear is one cause, and pills often form where fabric rubs against itself or other surfaces. Defuzzing removes lint or pills that have already formed; careful washing can help reduce future abrasion but will not remove existing pills. Choose the right method for the sweater

1. Lift loose fuzz with a lint roller or sticky tape
Roll lightly over the sweater, or press a piece of sticky tape onto loose fuzz and lift it away. Avoid rubbing hard: the goal is to pick up material lying on the surface, not scrape the knit. If a pill stays attached, switch to a removal method appropriate for the fabric rather than pulling at it.
2. Comb pills from a delicate knit
A sweater or fabric comb can give you manual control on wool and fine knits such as cashmere or merino, provided the tool’s instructions say it is suitable. Lay the sweater flat, hold the area taut without stretching it, and use slow, gentle strokes in a small test area. Woolmark advises combing wool very gently and carefully. Stop if the knit catches, stretches, or starts to look fuzzy or thin.

3. Try a sweater stone with a light touch
A sweater stone is another manual option for removing pills, but it is not appropriate for every knit. Check both the garment and stone instructions before use. Test an inconspicuous patch, then work gently without pressing hard; Patagonia warns that excess pressure can damage fabric. Stop if the surface changes or the stone catches the yarn.
4. Shave stubborn pills only on compatible fabric
An electric fabric shaver may help with stubborn pills if the garment and shaver instructions permit it. Lay the sweater flat, test a hidden area, and move the shaver lightly over the surface without pushing down. Maytag cautions that too much pressure can remove more fabric than intended. Do not use a shaver simply because pills remain: an unsuitable sweater can be damaged.

Make the choice safely
- Read the sweater’s care label and the removal tool’s fabric guidance.
- Identify the problem: loose lint calls for a roller or tape; attached pills need a suitable comb, stone, or shaver.
- Test the chosen tool on a hidden area before treating the visible surface. Maytag’s guide says, “If you’re removing pills from a delicate fabric, be sure to test the removal method in a hidden area first.”
- Use light pressure and stop if the fabric catches, stretches, thins, or otherwise changes.
In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission’s care-labeling rule covers required care instructions for covered apparel; follow the instructions on the garment rather than assuming all sweaters can be treated alike.

Follow the garment’s care label for washing. For wool, Woolmark suggests turning the item inside out before washing and minimizing abrasion. Tide Canada recommends gentle-cycle or hand washing and flat air drying in its sweater-care instructions. These steps can help limit friction during care, but they do not guarantee that a sweater will never pill.
