Make a leprechaun trail with washable green paint, green powder, a reusable stamp, or painted shoe soles. For an easy hand-shaped print, press the pinkie side of a fist onto the surface and add toe marks with a fingertip. Choose based on where the trail will go and how much cleanup you want to manage: paint belongs on a washable, nonporous surface, while a printable template avoids wet paint and loose powder.
Choose a method for your surface and cleanup plan

The four main approaches—paint, powder, a stamp, and painted shoe soles—are described in Matthew Lynch’s guide to making leprechaun footprints. Treat them as craft suggestions, not tested guarantees about stain removal or performance.
1. Paint small footprints by hand or with a brush
For a quick hand-shaped print, hold a fist with the pinkie side down and press it into washable green paint, then onto the surface. Add five toe marks above it with a fingertip. This makes a compact print with few tools; alternating hands can make the trail look less uniform.

For more control, use a small brush to draw U-shaped footprints, or use a footprint stencil. Space the marks along the trail and let them dry. A painted-footprint and printable craft guide recommends household use on nonporous, washable surfaces; paper or cardstock is another option. Spot-test paint on the exact surface before starting, since the sources do not establish stain resistance across materials.
2. Make powder footprints with a fist
Green powder gives you a hand-pressed shape without stamping wet paint directly onto the floor. Morgan’s Celebrating with Kids tutorial describes flour, powdered sugar, baby powder, baking soda, or chalk as possible bases; chalk is suggested for outdoor sidewalk use.

- Put about ¼ cup of flour in a resealable bag or bowl, following the tutorial’s illustrated recipe.
- Stir in green food coloring. If needed, add water sparingly—about ¼ teaspoon at a time—to help the color blend. Too much water can make the powder clumpy; the tutorial suggests blending it again if that happens.
- Pour the mixture into a shallow dish. Dip the side of a fist into the powder and gently press it onto a flat surface.
- Add toe marks with a finger. Alternating hands can suggest different feet.
The tutorial says its powder sweeps up with a broom; that instruction is not a guarantee for every powder or surface. Use a small test print where cleanup matters, and avoid loose powder where it could be tracked through the home.
3. Make a simple footprint stamp
A stamp is useful when you want repeated prints without drawing each one from scratch. Cut footprint shapes from foam paper and attach them to a small wooden block to make a handle, or use a small footprint-shaped cookie cutter as the shape.

- Press the foam shape onto a washable-paint pad or dip the cookie cutter’s edge lightly in washable green paint.
- Press the shape onto a suitable surface, lifting straight up to keep the outline clear.
- Reload with paint as needed and space the prints along the trail.
Test the stamp on scrap paper or an inconspicuous spot first so you can adjust the amount of paint. The stamp method is described in The Tech Edvocate’s four-method guide.

For a trail that looks like someone walked through, apply washable green paint to the soles of shoes with distinctive tread and walk across a suitable surface. Try one print first: a tread that is too smooth may not read clearly, while excess paint can blur the pattern. The method appears in The Tech Edvocate’s guide; it does not document how paint behaves on different floors, so choose a washable surface and test before making a full trail.

Lower-mess alternatives and a toilet-seat variation
Use a printable footprint or boot shape
If you want to avoid loose powder and wet paint, print a footprint or boot template and place or cut it out for a paper trail or keepsake. The B-Inspired Mama guide offers a free printable packet.
Keep the toilet-seat prank separate from ordinary trails
The Soccer Mom Blog describes a specific toilet-seat prank: clean and disinfect the seat and bowl first, make prints with washable paint, and spot-test ahead of time. If staining is a concern, Stacey suggests using plastic wrap as a barrier. For tinted toilet water, the article suggests starting with one drop of food coloring to reduce the chance of staining.
