Use this project guide to choose a Photoshop space-art result—from planets and star fields to nebulae and complete composites—and see which skills and assets it involves. The 40-project count and project groupings are drawn from iTechGuides’ 2026 overview; they do not confirm that 40 original tutorial pages remain available or work in current Photoshop. “From scratch” can still involve generated noise, brushes, textures, or photographs, and visual realism does not mean scientific accuracy.
The projects cover planets, moons, stars, nebulae, galaxies, explosions, sci-fi environments, posters, and complete compositions. The recent overview notes that some inspiration comes from older tutorials, including the 2010 roundup “40 Robust Tutorials of ‘How To Create Planet And Space Art’ On Photoshop”. Its individual links, downloads, and version requirements have not all been re-verified, so check them before relying on a lesson or its assets.
Before you begin
Use Photoshop desktop for the workflows below. Menu names and filter behavior can differ between versions; treat Photoshop CS-era 3D directions as historical rather than default modern instructions.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Keep a working PSD so layers, masks, Smart Objects, and adjustment layers remain editable. Export a separate PNG or JPEG for delivery.
- Choose the canvas for its final use. Screen artwork does not universally require 300 ppi; that resolution is a print-workflow choice.
- Import textures and photographs as layers, rename them, and group related elements.
- Prefer layer masks to erasing pixels. White reveals, black conceals, and gray gives partial transparency. See Adobe’s layer-mask instructions.
- Use Smart Objects for imported artwork you will transform or filter. They preserve source content for nondestructive editing; see Adobe’s layers overview and nondestructive-editing guidance.
- Use adjustment layers for reversible tonal and color changes. Their masks let you target a planet, shadow, nebula, or background. Adobe’s adjustment-layer guide explains how masks control where an effect appears.
“Realistic” here means visually convincing, not scientifically accurate. A project described as “from scratch” may still use generated noise, brushes, textures, or photographs.

Full original space-art composition
Difficulty: Advanced. Techniques: Planet construction, stars, nebulae, effects, compositing, global grading. Assets: User-selected. Best for: A capstone project.
Sketch the value structure first, build reusable groups, and save incremental PSD versions. Finish with a consistent grade so generated and photographic elements share a visual language.
Core techniques behind most of the projects
Build a planet from a circular selection
- Create a document and make a circular selection with the Elliptical Marquee tool.
- Fill the selection or place a texture inside it.
- Convert imported artwork to a Smart Object when it will be transformed or filtered.
- Keep the base, texture, shadow, highlight, atmosphere, and cast shadow on separate layers.
- Clip texture and color adjustments to the planet silhouette.
- Paint a broad shadow and a separate highlight.
- Add a terminator transition, subtle reflected light, and directional rim glow.
- Mask the atmosphere so it is not equally bright around the entire circumference.
There is no universal opacity, blur radius, or brush size; choose them for the canvas, texture, light direction, and intended style.
Choose blend modes deliberately
- Multiply darkens and can help with shadows.
- Screen removes black and can help with stars and glow.
- Overlay increases contrast and can integrate surface texture.
- Soft Light gives a gentler contrast effect.
- Color Dodge and Linear Dodge/Add create intense highlights but can clip whites quickly.
Results depend on the layer colors, opacity, blend mode, color mode, and underlying artwork. If an effect is too strong, reduce it or use a mask.
Create convincing stars
Generate stars with Noise, Levels or Threshold, blur, and selective masks, or use brushes with varied spacing, size, and opacity. Keep most points dim, reserve bright stars for focal areas, and use layers to suggest depth. Distant stars should generally be smaller, softer, and less contrasty. Do not place stars through planets or dense foreground objects.

Create a nebula
Use a dark base, irregular Clouds or Noise texture, colorized layers, masks, and selective Screen, Overlay, Color Dodge, or Linear Dodge/Add. Warp or Liquify can stretch texture; painted wisps and dust add direction. Place stars above or below the nebula according to the desired depth.
Construct an explosion or impact
Build the effect from a bright core, color transitions, smoke or debris, streaks, motion blur, shockwave, particles, and light spill on nearby objects. The surrounding planet, ground, or ship should respond to the light.
Troubleshooting
The planet looks flat
Common causes include uniform texture brightness, no terminator, an oversized highlight, inconsistent light direction, or a full-edge glow. Separate the shadow, texture, and highlight; reduce texture contrast and add restrained reflected light.
The texture does not follow the sphere
Check that the texture is clipped to the planet silhouette and that its mask follows the edge. Reduce contrast, warp it if necessary, and mask it away from the shadow side.
The stars look repetitive
Separate stars into depth layers, vary size and opacity, soften distant layers, and remove bright points from non-focal regions.
The glow is clipped or artificial
Lower opacity, use masks, and replace a harsh effect with several subtler layers. Preserve dark areas for contrast.
The selection has a halo
Inspect the edge closely, refine the mask where appropriate, and paint edge corrections. Do not hide a halo with excessive blur.
The composite looks pasted together
Check scale, perspective, color temperature, sharpness, grain, and light direction. Use haze for distance and a restrained global grade to unify elements.
Photoshop becomes slow
Save an archived PSD, hide unused groups, reduce working texture sizes, and save incremental versions. Keep an editable original before rasterizing a disposable copy. Large Smart Objects, blurred layers, and oversized textures can increase memory and scratch-disk use.
Legacy tutorials and link verification
The recent project guide draws on ideas that include a 2010 roundup, but it does not establish that each original tutorial destination, download, or instruction remains available or compatible. Verify each link and required asset before presenting it as usable, and do not describe a Photoshop CS4 Extended 3D workflow as current instruction.
For each external tutorial, check its destination, stated Photoshop version, required downloads, whether the workflow is nondestructive, and whether it depends on stock material. A technique may remain useful even when menu labels differ, but an unavailable download or obsolete feature should not be a prerequisite.
Asset licensing and alternatives
Check the license for every photograph, texture, brush, and font. A free download does not automatically grant commercial-use permission. Follow attribution requirements where specified, and do not republish tutorial screenshots or finished images without permission.
Adobe Photoshop is a natural choice when you need the application named by these tutorials and want layers, masks, Smart Objects, filters, brushes, and adjustment layers. Check Adobe’s official plans page for current availability and pricing; prices and terms can vary by country, promotion, billing term, and customer type.
For photographs, textures, smoke, fire, debris, or landscape plates, Adobe Stock is an optional source. Many effects can instead be generated with Photoshop filters, brushes, masks, gradients, and blend modes.
Readers seeking non-subscription tools can compare Affinity Photo, Krita, and GIMP. They support overlapping concepts such as layers, selections, masks, and compositing, but Photoshop-specific menu paths and filters will not transfer exactly. For physically lit planets, animation, or repeatable camera angles, Blender is a better fit than a legacy Photoshop 3D workflow, though it has a steeper learning curve.

Are all 40 tutorials current Photoshop tutorials?
No. The 40-project count describes the project guide, not a verification of 40 live tutorial pages. Check individual legacy links, downloads, and version requirements before relying on them.
Can I create space art in Photoshop without stock images?
Yes. Stars, nebulae, glows, energy bursts, many planets, and abstract effects can be made with selections, filters, brushes, masks, gradients, and blend modes. Stock textures are optional for some projects and required only by workflows that depend on them.
What is the best first project?
Start with a simple planet, eclipse, or basic star field. These practice selections, gradients, shading, masks, and controlled glow without complex compositing.
Is Photoshop CS4 Extended 3D still the recommended way to make a 3D planet?
No. It is a legacy workflow. Use current 2D Photoshop techniques for illustrated planets, or Blender when you need 3D geometry, lighting, animation, or multiple camera views.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
How do you build a planet from a circular selection?
Create a circular selection, fill it or place a texture inside it, then keep the texture, shadow, highlight, and atmosphere editable on separate layers. Use clipping and masks to control where each element appears.
How do you create stars, nebulae, and galaxies in Photoshop?
Use Noise, Levels or Threshold, brushes, gradients, masks, and selective blend modes. Build separate layers for different depths and keep bright effects focused so the scene retains contrast.
The Bottom Line
Choose a project by the skill you want to practice: selections for a simple planet, texture and lighting for a surface, masks and blend modes for nebulae, layered light for explosions, or color-matched compositing for complete scenes. Keep the PSD editable, verify external links and asset licenses, and treat CS-era 3D instructions as historical.
