Wood kitchens are still firmly in style because timber is a design language, not a single look. Architectural Digest’s 2025 archive of 41 kitchens shows oak, walnut, mahogany, maple, alder, Douglas fir, hickory, reclaimed boards and plywood working with marble, concrete, tile, stainless steel, brass and colorful paint. The useful lesson is not to copy one room; it is to choose a wood treatment, supporting materials and hardware that fit your home.

The gallery also answers the practical questions behind the inspiration: wood usually costs more initially than synthetic cabinetry, hickory is a particularly durable choice, and thoughtful detailing can make a timber kitchen easier to live with for years.

Why wood kitchens remain relevant

Timber can read rustic, modern, minimalist, Art Deco, tropical, Moroccan or eclectic depending on its grain, finish, proportions and neighbors. That flexibility explains why the archive moves from a Cotswolds farmhouse to a São Paulo concrete interior without treating either as an exception.

Early-2000s Tuscan kitchens are one of the looks that has dated, but that is a warning about a particular combination of heavy ornament, finishes and color—not about wood itself. Flat or framed doors, visible grain, painted sections, open shelving and mixed materials all give a wood kitchen a current point of view.

Combined with the 1.5 and 2.5 inch angle sash brushes you have precision cutting-in covered at every scale — baseboards, crown molding, door casings, and ceiling lines.
  • FLAT BRUSHES FOR BROAD SMOOTH COVERAGE ON ANY SURFACE — The 1 and 2 inch flat brushes deliver even coverage on walls, furniture, shelving, doors, fences, decks, and wood surfaces. Ideal for applying primers, stains, varnishes, polyurethane, and specialty coatings. Solid wood handles provide all-day comfort and control for both professional contractors and weekend DIY homeowners tackling interior or exterior painting projects.
  • TRUSTED BY PROFESSIONAL PAINTERS AND CONTRACTORS NATIONWIDE — Pro Grade delivers professional-grade results at a price that makes sense for crews who go through brushes on every job. Ideal for property managers, remodeling contractors, apartment turnover crews, maintenance teams, and commercial painting operations. Backed by thousands of verified reviews from working painters. Washable and reusable for multiple projects.

Stone, tile and metal prevent a room from becoming visually monotone. A wood island can sit beneath a stainless-steel worktop; a walnut wall can meet a marble counter; a reclaimed ceiling can be balanced by very plain cabinetry. The archive repeatedly uses contrast rather than matching every surface.

What the 41 kitchens demonstrate

Each project below is a useful reference for a specific decision: how much wood to show, where to introduce color, and which non-wood element should carry the room.

41 Undeniably Orderly White-oak cabinets demonstrate Ryan Murphy’s rule: “Repeat, repeat, repeat. Find three materials you love and just keep using them.”

Which wood species and applications make sense?

The archive does not present one universally correct species. It shows that the same room can use solid boards, veneer, reclaimed timber, plywood, painted or lacquered surfaces, and wood used only on an island, ceiling or table.

Material or species shown Where it appears in the archive Planning implication
Oak, including white oak Hillside Home, City Outlook, Aspen, and Ryan Murphy’s kitchen A versatile baseline for cabinetry or paneling; decide whether the grain should be quiet, limed or strongly repeated.
Walnut, including black walnut Bohemian Rhapsody, Greenwich Village, Floridian, Black Walnut Kitchen and midcentury redesign Useful when you want a darker, furniture-like presence; balance it with light, stone or metal.
Mahogany Reclaimed counter in English Breakfast and curved Art Deco cabinetry Can support either an old-house story or a polished geometric one, depending on profile and sheen.
Maple Horizontal-grain cabinetry in Modern Marvel Grain direction itself can become the visual motif.
Alder Los Cabos vacation retreat Works with colored ceramic tile when the room needs a relaxed, informal feel.
Douglas fir Bleached flooring in Brighten Up A floor treatment can lighten existing walnut without replacing the cabinets.
Hickory Rustic with Range Architectural Digest identifies hickory as particularly durable because it is less prone to indentations and relatively less sensitive to moisture.
Reclaimed boards, plywood and fence pickets Farmhouse, mountain and Yucca Valley projects Specify the source, grading, sealing and installation method; reclaimed material is a construction decision, not merely a finish.

Is a wood kitchen more expensive?

Architectural Digest says wood kitchens are generally more expensive than synthetic-material kitchens. The initial difference should be weighed against expected service life and maintenance: a well-made timber kitchen may last longer and can be easier to maintain, creating possible long-term savings. The actual total depends on species, veneer or solid construction, joinery, finish, custom millwork, hardware, installation and the amount of wood used.

Build a budget in separate lines for cabinetry, panels, counters, hardware, appliances, plumbing fixtures, lighting and labor. A wood island with painted perimeter cabinets is a different financial decision from a fully paneled room with a timber ceiling. Ask your fabricator how a finish will be repaired, whether replacement doors can be made later and what moisture protection is included.

How to turn the archive into a renovation plan

  1. Choose the room’s visual anchor. Decide whether it is the cabinetry, island, ceiling, floor, backsplash or a freestanding table. Limit the strongest grain to that anchor so the room has hierarchy.
  2. Select one primary wood treatment. Compare natural, limed, bleached, stained, lacquered, reclaimed and painted samples in the actual room’s daylight and evening light.
  3. Add one hard counterpoint. Marble, granite, concrete, stainless steel, travertine or ceramic tile can supply the contrast seen throughout the archive. Choose a surface for both appearance and the work it must withstand.
  4. Set a repeatable material palette. Murphy’s advice is practical: choose three materials you genuinely like and repeat them across doors, counters, backsplash, floor or furniture instead of collecting unrelated finishes.
  5. Resolve the working wall. Place the range, hood, refrigerator, sink and dishwasher for the way you cook. Several archive kitchens use professional equipment, but the lesson is coordination, not a requirement for any particular appliance.
  6. Design hardware as part of the woodwork. Handles and knobs change how a door reads. Full-length pulls emphasize contemporary lines; small knobs or cup pulls support a traditional room. Order samples and check that mounting positions clear adjacent doors.
  7. Plan lighting before fabrication. Under-cabinet task lighting, ceiling fixtures and decorative pendants reveal grain and prevent dark timber from overwhelming the work surfaces.
  8. Protect vulnerable edges. Confirm finished end panels, sink cutouts, dishwasher edges and the underside of counters are sealed. These areas encounter more water and impact than a dry cabinet face.
  9. Make one maintenance sample. Keep a labeled piece of the exact finish. Use it to test cleaners, touch-up products and the effect of sunlight before treating the installed kitchen.

Durability, moisture and daily care

Hickory is the archive’s clearest durability example, especially where impact and moisture are concerns. That does not make every hickory product suitable for every application: construction, finish quality, edge detailing and installation still determine performance.

  • Expect natural wood to change subtly with light and age; ask whether your chosen finish is intended to develop a patina or remain uniform.

Common design mistakes and better fixes

Making every surface the same wood

Matching cabinets, ceiling, floor and furniture can flatten the room. Keep one or two surfaces quieter, or introduce stone, tile, metal or painted elements to create visual breaks.

Choosing by sample alone

A small showroom chip cannot show how grain repeats across a wall or how a finish looks beside your counter. Review full-size door samples next to the actual stone, tile and appliance fronts.

Using trend language instead of a clear brief

“Modern farmhouse” or “warm contemporary” is not a specification. State the door profile, grain direction, sheen, color, counter material and hardware finish so the cabinetmaker can price and build the same idea.

Ignoring the non-wood elements

The archive’s strongest rooms coordinate ranges, sinks, hoods, stools, lighting and tile with the cabinetry. Select those items early enough to confirm clearances, ventilation and electrical requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Overlooking scale

Heavy beams or dark walnut can dominate a small room, while delicate veneer may disappear in a large one. Use an island, ceiling or table as a controlled dose when a full timber envelope would be too much.

How to choose a direction from the archive

  • For a relaxed country kitchen: study reclaimed or aged wood, open shelving, a simple chandelier, tile and a practical work surface.
  • For a clean contemporary kitchen: use consistent grain direction, slab or restrained-frame doors, integrated panels and one contrasting counter material.
  • For a dark, luxurious room: consider walnut or mahogany with reflective stone, copper or lacquer, then add layered lighting.
  • For a colorful room: let natural or lightly finished wood act as the calm background for yellow, green or blue tile and painted accents.
  • For a compact kitchen: concentrate wood on cabinets or a table, keep the counter and walls light, and use open shelving selectively.

What to ask your designer or cabinetmaker

  • Is this species being used as solid wood, veneer, plywood or a reclaimed product?
  • How will grain direction align across doors, drawer fronts and end panels?
  • What finish is specified, how is it repaired, and what routine cleaning does it require?
  • Which edges and openings receive extra moisture protection?
  • Can a damaged door, panel or section be replaced without rebuilding the entire run?
  • How will the wood interact with the selected counter, backsplash, appliances, stools and lighting?
  • What changes in color or sheen should be expected from daylight and use?

The practical takeaway

The Architectural Digest archive makes a strong case for wood because it shows range rather than a single trend. Oak can be pale and orderly, walnut can be intimate or dramatic, reclaimed boards can add history, and plywood or pickets can make a room feel handmade. Start with the way you cook and live, choose a durable construction and finish, then use stone, tile, steel, color and hardware to give the timber a clear role. That approach produces a kitchen that feels intentional long after a particular style label has passed.
