Choose projects by time, location, and materials
Country Living’s June 2026 and Good Housekeeping’s July 2026 roundups include specific craft projects; Country Living’s 2023 roundup also covers decorations to DIY or buy. The choice between making and buying depends on the available materials, the time you have, where the decoration will go, whether you want to reuse it, and whether children will help.
- For a quick indoor update: choose a printable banner, paper stars, a table arrangement, or a finished decoration you already own.
- For a paint-focused project: try the flower pot, metal bucket, snack basket, or stencil-on-fabric ideas, allowing for the paint’s required drying and curing time.
- For a covered porch: arrange flags, pinwheels, or a painted container, checking each material’s suitability for the location.
- For an exposed yard: do not assume paper, fabric, or ordinary craft paint will last outdoors. Check product labels for weather exposure and secure lightweight pieces against movement.
- For children helping: select a project suited to their age and ability, supervise paint and cutting, and have adults handle tools that are hot or sharp.
Keep decorations separate from fireworks
Do not use sparklers as decoration or as a child’s prop. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s June 28, 2024 guidance says, “Never allow children to play with or ignite fireworks, including sparklers.” It also says sparklers burn at about 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep fireworks and sparklers separate from craft materials, table displays, and children’s activities.
