450-Square-Foot Paris Apartment, Replanned as a Country House in the City

A Paris attic by Frères Voirin gains space and character by exposing its roof volume, adding skylights, preserving timber and tile, and using a library wall as a light-sharing room divider.

A cramped attic in Paris’s Charonne-Bastille neighborhood became a calm, country-house-like home through a few decisive moves: exposing five more feet of roof height, bringing daylight in through skylights, and using a low library wall to organize the plan without sealing it off. The result shows how proportion, circulation, timber, and paint can matter more than floor area.

The project was designed by Pierre and François Voirin of Frères Voirin in a top-floor building dating to around 1900. Architectural Digest’s headline describes the apartment as 450 square feet, while its article text calls it roughly 500 square feet; those two figures should be treated as an unresolved discrepancy, not a single confirmed measurement.

The project in brief

Element What the feature reports
Location Charonne-Bastille neighborhood, Paris
Architects Pierre and François Voirin of Frères Voirin
Building Top-floor property dating to around 1900
Previous condition Two apartments had been combined, but the low interior still felt cramped
Height intervention Removing a false ceiling revealed five additional feet
Daylight intervention New skylights were added to the attic interior
Shared zone Living room, office, dining area, and kitchen operate as one connected space
Private zone Bedroom, dressing area, and bathroom sit behind a library partition
Material language Exposed timber, oak installations, a new oak floor, retained original floor tiles, white walls and sloped roof
Named furnishings Brown armchairs from Drouot, a small yellow lamp from the Vanves flea market, and a steel-and-restored-marble coffee table

The feature does not provide a renovation budget, independent floor-area measurement, daylight readings, or a broader comparison with other apartments. Its value is the clear record of how this one attic was reorganized.

Why the original apartment felt smaller than its footprint

Combining two apartments had created more usable rooms, but not necessarily a more generous experience. The limiting condition was vertical: a false ceiling hid a substantial portion of the roof volume. In an attic, that lost height changes everything. It lowers the apparent horizon, makes circulation feel compressed, and prevents the roof structure from contributing to the character of the rooms.

Washable and reusable for multiple projects.

The Voirins treated the building rather than the existing partitions as the starting point. Their description is direct: “With its sloping roof, the space on the top floor of this building from around 1900 is beautiful and completely usable.” Removing the false ceiling exposed five additional feet. That is not a cosmetic adjustment; it changes the section of the apartment, allowing the roof pitch and timber frame to become visible architecture.

For a small home, this is an important distinction. Adding floor area is often impossible, while recovering concealed volume may be feasible if the structure, insulation, fire separation, and building regulations allow it. A ceiling removal should therefore begin with a structural and services survey, not a decorating plan. The Paris project demonstrates the perceptual gain, but it does not establish that every attic can safely receive the same intervention.

How the new plan separates rooms without closing them off

One shared living field

The living room, office, dining area, and kitchen are arranged as a single shared zone. This avoids a sequence of narrow rooms and lets one activity borrow visual space from another. A person at the dining table can remain connected to the kitchen; the office is part of daily life rather than an isolated cubicle.

The architects describe the existing recess as a natural place for the kitchen and bathroom. “The distribution was clear to us and the recess in the wall was perfect to accommodate the kitchen and the bathroom, and it also allowed us to create the symmetry with the two doors that immediately define the space,” Pierre and François Voirin explain. The point is not symmetry for its own sake. A recess absorbs service functions while preserving the legibility of the principal room.

A library as a threshold

A full-height wall would have divided the apartment into darker, smaller compartments. Instead, a library separates the shared zone from the bedroom, dressing area, and bathroom. The shelving stops short of the ceiling, and glass above it allows light to pass between sides. A door within the shelves leads to another room, making the boundary useful while retaining a sense of discovery.

The Voirins call this “the idea of a hidden room,” adding: “The library wall plays on the idea of a hidden room, of doors within shelves, not hidden but almost.” That threshold performs several jobs at once: it stores books, marks privacy, frames views, and keeps the roof volume visually continuous. In a compact plan, a multifunctional boundary can replace several single-purpose elements.

Privacy with borrowed light

The arrangement is a compromise rather than a promise of complete acoustic separation. The bedroom and bathroom are visually screened, but the open area above the shelving means light and some sound can travel. Anyone adapting the idea should decide which rooms need visual privacy, which need quiet, and which merely need a change of threshold. Frosted or textured glazing, solid cabinet sections, curtains, or acoustic backing can adjust that balance without turning the partition into a conventional wall.

Where the country-house character comes from

Timber that remains legible

The renovation preserves the existing timber structure instead of hiding it behind a uniformly finished ceiling. Oak installations and a new oak floor relate to that exposed wood, creating continuity between old and new. Original floor tiles remain in parts of the apartment, so the surfaces do not read as a single freshly installed package.

This layered approach is more convincing than applying a rustic finish everywhere. The old structure supplies irregularity and age; the oak additions provide a controlled, contemporary framework. The architects explain their preference this way: “It discouraged the use of a more finished wood. We didn’t want anything too smooth or too varnished.” Their choice points toward matte, tactile surfaces rather than glossy coatings that would erase variation.

White as a reflector, not a blank default

The walls and sloped roof are white, with color used sparingly. In an attic, a pale roof plane can reflect skylight deeper into the room and make the changing geometry easier to read. White also prevents the oak and timber from competing with a busy background. The effect depends on daylight and texture: a chalky or low-sheen surface can reveal planes more gently than a highly reflective finish.

For painters, the lesson is to test the color on every plane. A white that looks neutral on a vertical wall can appear cooler under a skylight or warmer beside aged timber. Sample the wall, ceiling slope, and area beside the preserved tile, then observe them in morning and evening light. The apartment’s published description identifies white surfaces and restrained color, but it does not specify paint brands, formulas, sheen levels, or lighting measurements.

Small, deliberate color notes

Color enters through objects rather than a broad palette: brown armchairs sourced at Drouot and a small yellow lamp found at the Vanves flea market are specifically named. A steel-and-restored-marble coffee table adds another contrast, pairing a cool structural material with a surface marked by restoration.

These accents make the room feel collected over time. They also keep the envelope quiet enough for the roof, shelves, and floor to remain the dominant composition. The feature associates the coffee table with Carhel Paris and the library millwork with Doffer; it does not identify retail models for the chairs or lamp.

Why the skylights matter in an attic

Skylights bring daylight into the roof interior, where conventional wall windows may be limited by the slope and neighboring buildings. Their contribution is both practical and spatial: they illuminate the upper volume that became visible when the false ceiling was removed, so the recovered height does not remain a dark architectural void.

Skylight placement has trade-offs. Glazing can introduce heat gain, glare, nighttime privacy concerns, and difficult-to-clean surfaces. A real renovation requires a roof survey, waterproofing details, insulation continuity, ventilation strategy, and compliance with local permissions. The Paris feature confirms that skylights were installed, but it does not publish their dimensions, orientation, glazing specification, or performance data.

Painting lessons you can carry into a small attic

Map the existing structure first

  1. Draw the roof slopes, beams, recesses, doors, and retained tiles before choosing colors.
  2. Identify which surfaces are historic fabric and which will be new work; the contrast can be an asset rather than a defect.
  3. Check moisture, roof leaks, salts, and timber movement before applying a finish.

Use one calm envelope, then tune the planes

A near-continuous pale envelope can enlarge a compact room visually, but it should not flatten every detail. Keep the principal wall and roof family closely related, then use sheen or a subtle value shift where maintenance or emphasis requires it. Around a library partition, a quiet background lets the shelving read as architecture.

Let daylight determine the final color

Skylight illumination changes quickly. Paint large sample boards, move them between the vertical wall and roof slope, and inspect them at several times of day. Compare samples beside oak, exposed timber, and original tile—the materials that will actually remain in the room. This process is more reliable than selecting a white from a small printed card.

Protect old materials without imitating them

Retained tile and timber do not need to be made artificially rustic. Clean them appropriately, repair only what is necessary, and choose new finishes that are quiet enough to sit beside them. The Voirins’ dislike of overly smooth or varnished wood supports a broader rule: preserve evidence of use where it is sound, and make new work honestly new.

How to adapt the library-partition idea

A custom shelving wall is not the same as placing a freestanding bookcase in a room. The Paris library is millwork that acts as a partition, incorporates a door, and is coordinated with the building’s geometry. A freestanding oak bookcase can suggest the look, but it will not automatically provide privacy, structural fixing, or a concealed passage.

Before commissioning built-ins, decide what the partition must carry:

Use a joiner or millworker for a true architectural divider, and treat any freestanding bookcase as an adjacent furniture solution rather than the featured installation.

Trade-offs hidden inside the calm appearance

  • More height can reveal more work: Exposing the roof may require structural repairs, insulation upgrades, fire protection, or new access for maintenance.
  • Open planning reduces compartmentalization: The shared zone feels larger, but cooking, work, dining, and relaxation remain visually connected.
  • A low partition shares light but also sound: The bedroom gains a threshold rather than a fully sealed acoustic barrier.
  • Custom millwork consumes budget and time: It can solve storage, circulation, and privacy together, while movable furniture is easier to change.
  • White surfaces show condition: Dust, roof leaks, and marks are easier to notice, which is useful for maintenance but demands regular care.
  • Vintage pieces are not uniform: Differences in wear, scale, and color create character, yet each item still has to fit the circulation and roof geometry.

What makes this apartment feel like a country house

No single object supplies the effect. It comes from a sequence of compatible decisions: the roof is allowed to be seen; daylight reaches the upper volume; oak relates to existing timber; original tiles retain a sense of time; white surfaces keep the envelope quiet; and furniture introduces brown, yellow, steel, and restored marble in measured doses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The plan also borrows a country-house quality: rooms are connected by thresholds, views, and useful furniture rather than by a rigid corridor. Yet the project remains distinctly urban and attic-specific. Its lesson is not to decorate a small apartment with generic rustic motifs. It is to read the building’s clues, remove what suppresses them, and add only the elements needed to make daily life work.

As the Voirins put it, “Places give us directions, what’s important is to follow them.” In this apartment, those directions were the sloping roof, the recess, the timber, the available light, and the need to separate private rooms without sacrificing the shared volume. That disciplined response—not square footage alone—is what makes the home feel expansive and lived-in.
