Yes, you can transform a thrifted oak dresser bought for $5, but $5 is only the acquisition price. A usable makeover also requires inspection, drawer repair, surface preparation, paint, a protective finish, and possibly new hardware. The documented projects behind this idea show a reliable sequence: fix or remove problem drawers, clean and sand, prime damaged areas, paint, smooth the finish with 220-grit paper, seal it, and fit hardware only after measuring the existing holes.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The exact-title project by Christy K. James, published October 6, 2026, began with an antique oak dresser purchased near the end of a yard sale. Its neglected finish and sticking drawers made the low price deceptive. The finished piece used drawer conditioning, paint, replacement knobs, decorative backplates, glue, casting resin, clear spray sealer, and thrifted fabric for drawer interiors.

What the $5 price really means

In James’s October 6, 2026 makeover, the dresser itself cost $5 because the seller wanted it gone as the yard sale was closing. That figure does not represent a complete project budget. Paint, primer, abrasives, adhesive, drawer lubricant or conditioner, hardware, and finish can all add cost, and the published projects do not give a current all-in total.

  • TRUSTED BY PROFESSIONAL PAINTERS AND CONTRACTORS NATIONWIDE — Pro Grade delivers professional-grade results at a price that makes sense for crews who go through brushes on every job. Ideal for property managers, remodeling contractors, apartment turnover crews, maintenance teams, and commercial painting operations. Backed by thousands of verified reviews from working painters. Washable and reusable for multiple projects.

A separate $5 dresser redo published by the same author in 2016 also treated $5 as the purchase price rather than the final spend. A 2011 example from More Like Home put replacement hardware at approximately $3 per piece at that time. Hardware prices, paint prices, and availability change, so use those figures as context rather than a current quote. Before buying, decide whether you already own the consumables; that is the difference between a very inexpensive refresh and a new-materials project.

Documented choices and their trade-offs

Decision Documented approach Practical implication
Paint or preserve oak The exact-title project painted the dresser; the companion project used Behr Sparrow converted into DIY chalk paint. Painting hides more of the original grain but makes an uneven or neglected finish easier to unify.
Repair or modify drawers The projects address faulty or sticking drawers through repair, conditioning, removal, or conversion to open storage. Repair keeps the dresser’s function; modification can avoid a drawer that remains troublesome.
Keep or replace hardware The exact-title makeover used replacement knobs and decorative moulded backplates. New hardware changes the look, but it must match the existing hole count and spacing or require patching and redrilling.
Wax or clear spray The companion project used Annie Sloan Clear wax; the exact-title project used Rust-Oleum Satin Clear Spray. Choose one compatible protective system and follow its label; the sources do not provide a controlled performance comparison.

Inspect the dresser before committing to paint

Do the assessment before loading the piece into your car or buying supplies. A $5 price can conceal repairs that take more time than the finish work.

  • Open every drawer. Look for sticking, racking, broken runners, missing stops, split corners, and bottoms that sag. Test each drawer fully in and out rather than assuming one good drawer represents the rest.
  • Check the case. Push gently on opposite corners to detect looseness, inspect joints for gaps, and look underneath for water damage, pest evidence, or a warped base.
  • Look at the finish. Identify peeling coating, heavy residue, cloudy patches, and areas where the veneer or solid wood is damaged. The documented $5 dresser had a neglected finish and sticking drawers, so its low price was not a sign that it was ready to paint.
  • Count and measure hardware. Count every knob or pull and measure the distance between screw holes from center to center if the piece uses pulls. Photograph the back of each fitting before removal.
  • Decide whether the structure is worth saving. If the body is sound and only the finish and hardware are tired, paint is sensible. If the case is loose or badly damaged, estimate repair materials before buying.

Choose a makeover direction

Paint the whole dresser

Painting is the most direct route when the existing finish is stained, mismatched, or too damaged to display. It also lets you use a coordinated color while keeping the original silhouette. The companion project used Behr Sparrow made into DIY chalk paint, then sanded the painted surface to create a distressed effect.

Preserve visible oak

If the wood grain and finish are attractive after cleaning, keep them visible instead of painting. This reduces the amount of coating work, but it does not eliminate repairs: sticking drawers, loose joints, damaged veneer, or missing hardware still need attention. Do not paint merely because the piece was inexpensive; paint when it solves a finish problem or supports the look you want.

Repair a drawer or convert the opening

A drawer that only needs lubrication or a small joint repair can remain functional. A severely damaged drawer may be removed and the opening adapted for open storage, but that changes how the dresser is used and how the front looks. The documented projects demonstrate both repair and modification routes; choose based on the case condition and your storage needs rather than forcing every drawer to work exactly as before.

Gather materials without inflating the budget

Collect supplies after the inspection so you buy only what the dresser requires. The documented makeovers used the following categories:

The approximately $3-per-piece figure from More Like Home dates to 2011 and should not be treated as a present-day cost.

Step-by-step $5 oak dresser makeover

1. Photograph, label, and empty the dresser

Take photos of the original hardware, drawer order, and any damaged details. Remove the contents and label drawers if they are not interchangeable. Keep screws and fittings in a bag so you can reuse them or compare their spacing with replacements.

2. Remove drawers and address obvious faults

Work on the drawers separately from the case. Tighten loose fasteners, reglue separated joints, and replace or repair a damaged runner when practical. If a drawer is beyond economical repair, decide now whether to remove it and create open storage. Do not paint over a structural problem.

3. Clean every surface

Wash the top, sides, drawer fronts, interiors, and hardware area until grime and residue are gone. Change cleaning cloths as they become dirty. Let the wood dry fully before sanding; paint will not compensate for a greasy or dusty surface.

4. Sand for adhesion and smoothness

Sand enough to dull a glossy coating and feather chipped edges. Concentrate on damaged areas rather than removing sound wood unnecessarily. Vacuum or wipe away dust before priming. If you plan to preserve the oak, use a gentler approach and stop once the surface is clean and stable instead of sanding through the finish.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Prime damaged or troublesome sections

Prime spots where the old finish is failing, the substrate is exposed, or repairs have created a different texture. The companion project did not describe priming every square inch; it sanded and primed selected areas because the dresser was in particularly poor condition. That targeted approach saves material while giving damaged sections a uniform base.

6. Apply furniture paint

Use thin, even coats and keep paint out of drawer slides and contact points. The companion project used Behr Sparrow converted into DIY chalk paint. Follow the product’s recoat and curing directions rather than assuming every chalk-style paint behaves identically. Paint the case, drawer fronts, and any trim you want unified, leaving moving surfaces as clean as possible.

7. Distress or smooth deliberately

If you want a worn appearance, distress only edges and details that would plausibly receive handling. For a cleaner finish, sand away nibs and brush marks without exposing broad areas of bare wood. James wrote, “I sanded with 220 grit sandpaper to knock down any rough areas from the paint.” Use that 220-grit step after the paint has dried sufficiently for sanding, then remove all dust.

8. Seal the finish

Match the sealer to the paint system. The companion project sealed its chalk-painted surface with Annie Sloan’s Clear wax. The exact-title makeover used Rust-Oleum Satin Clear Spray. Apply the selected product according to its label, with ventilation and appropriate protection, and avoid mixing wax and spray products unless the manufacturers explicitly allow that combination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Fit and install hardware

Hold each new knob or pull against the original holes before tightening. Confirm the screw length, the number of pieces, and the center-to-center spacing. Decorative moulded backplates can cover minor visual wear around a knob, but they do not correct badly mismatched holes. If the new hardware does not fit, pause and either return it, patch and redrill with care, or keep the original fittings.

10. Line and reassemble the drawers

Once the finish is dry and protected, reinstall the drawers in their labeled positions. The exact-title project used thrifted fabric to line drawer interiors, an optional step that adds color and hides worn bottoms. Trim the liner neatly so it does not catch on the drawer sides or interfere with movement.

Fixing sticking drawers before and after painting

Drawer movement is a functional issue, not a cosmetic one. First remove the drawer and inspect where it rubs. Look for a loose guide, a protruding nail, swollen wood, or paint buildup on a contact surface. Repair loose joints with wood glue and allow the adhesive to set according to its label. After cleaning and before final reassembly, condition the drawer sides and slides with furniture butter, as the exact-title project did, then test the drawer repeatedly.

James later acknowledged of the companion project, “It was a lot of work actually and if I had to do it over again, I would have fixed that stubborn drawer!” Treat that warning seriously: do not let a pretty finish hide a drawer that still binds. If conditioning and basic repairs do not solve the problem, removal or conversion to open storage may be more honest than calling the dresser finished.

Hardware: make fit the first priority

Hardware is where a low-cost makeover can become unexpectedly expensive. Count the pieces before ordering, measure hole spacing, and check whether the back of each drawer has enough clearance for the new screw. Knobs use one hole; pulls generally use two, so replacing one style with the other can require filling and drilling.

Use decorative backplates when they suit the design and help cover old marks. In the exact-title makeover, moulded backplates were paired with replacement knobs and casting resin. That combination is a style choice, not a universal repair: resin can recreate a decorative element, but it does not replace a sound structural joint. Keep original hardware if it is complete, sturdy, and compatible with the look you want; cleaning or repainting it may cost less than replacement.

Wax versus clear spray: select one protective route

Clear wax was the documented finish for the DIY chalk-painted companion dresser, while the exact-title project used a satin clear spray. Wax can support a hand-finished, low-sheen appearance; a clear spray can provide a consistent sprayed film. The available projects do not report a controlled comparison of durability, water resistance, or wear, so choose by the paint manufacturer’s compatibility guidance, the sheen you want, and your ability to apply the product safely.

Whichever finish you choose, protect the freshly painted surface from premature use. Keep drawers from rubbing against uncured paint, and do not force hardware into a wet or soft coating. Read the label for drying, recoating, ventilation, and cleanup requirements because those conditions vary by product.

Common problems and practical fixes

Paint peels or scratches immediately

The likely causes are residue, a glossy surface that was not dulled, or insufficiently prepared repairs. Stop, clean the area, sand the failing edge smooth, prime the exposed or damaged section, and repaint. Avoid applying another coat over loose paint.

Drawer still sticks

Remove it and identify the exact contact point. Check for paint on the slides, a shifted guide, a loose joint, or swelling. Condition the sides and slides as documented, then test before reinstalling the remaining drawers. If the case is distorted or the drawer is severely damaged, consider converting that opening rather than repeatedly forcing it.

New knobs do not line up

Do not enlarge holes casually; measure center-to-center spacing again and verify that you counted every drawer. Return mismatched hardware when possible, retain the originals, or plan a deliberate patch-and-redrill operation with the drawer front removed from the case.

Surface looks rough after painting

Let the coat dry as directed, then use 220-grit paper to knock down rough areas, exactly as James described. Remove sanding dust before the next paint or protective coat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repairs show through the finish

Feather the repair, prime that section, and repaint rather than adding increasingly thick topcoats. Targeted priming was part of the companion project’s preparation for badly damaged areas.

When the $5 makeover is worth doing

Proceed when the dresser has a sound case, repairable drawers, and a finish problem that paint or careful refinishing can solve. Reconsider when the body is unstable, several drawers require major reconstruction, or replacement hardware would require extensive alteration. The purchase price is attractive because it gives you a low entry point, not because the work is effortless.

A successful result is a dresser that opens smoothly, has a finish bonded to a properly prepared surface, uses hardware that actually fits, and is protected with a compatible sealer. The exact-title project proves that a $5 oak dresser can become a personalized piece, while the companion project’s stubborn-drawer lesson shows why function must be finished before styling.

Final inspection checklist

  • Every drawer opens and closes without forcing.
  • Loose joints and damaged details are repaired before the final coat.
  • Dust, grease, and sanding residue are removed before painting or sealing.
  • Problem areas receive primer where the substrate or old finish requires it.
  • Paint is smoothed with 220-grit paper where necessary.
  • The chosen wax or clear spray is compatible with the paint and applied as labeled.
  • Knob or pull quantity, hole spacing, screw length, and clearance are confirmed.
  • Drawer liners are secure and clear of the runners.
  • The budget records the $5 purchase separately from materials and hardware.
