A tired shed does not need the same treatment as every other outbuilding. The five makeovers in Jennifer Noonan’s Bob Vila gallery show a useful range: repainting can make a shed belong to an outdoor room, new hardware can revive doors, shutters and a ramp can add function, trim and reused materials can supply character, and a full interior conversion can create a studio. The right choice depends on whether you want a visual refresh, easier access, better landscape integration, or an entirely new use.
These are inspiration examples rather than a universal renovation recipe. The source was updated August 18, 2015, and does not provide current prices, paint specifications, structural details, electrical instructions, insulation values, or permitting guidance. Use the ideas below to define your project, then confirm technical requirements for your shed and location.

What the five makeovers have in common
The transformations work because they address different layers of a shed’s relationship with the yard. Some change only what people see. Others improve how people approach, enter, or use the building. One changes the inside enough to turn storage space into a working room.
- Appearance: Paint is the recurring visual change, sometimes paired with trim or decorative accents.
- Access and function: Door hardware, shutters, and a ramp make an ordinary prefab shed easier to operate and more useful.
- Surroundings: A patio, planting beds, or an awning can connect the shed to the landscape instead of leaving it as an isolated box.
- New use: A window, electricity, insulation, drywall, trim, paint, and shelving turn one example into an art studio.
The projects are not directly comparable on performance or total cost. They differ in size, existing condition, materials, and ambition, and the source supplies no consistent measurements or budgets.

Examples and categories in this table come from Bob Vila’s “Before & After: Simple Upgrades Wake Up 5 Tired Sheds”.
1. Repaint the shed and make it part of an outdoor room
In the first transformation, a tired baby-blue shed receives a charcoal paint job and becomes an anchor for a patio. The shed’s side helps define the outdoor living area, so the building is no longer merely a storage structure in the background. Its wall becomes part of the room’s visual boundary.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This approach is strongest when the shed already sits near a place where people gather. Rather than treating the building as a separate object, the makeover gives it a role in the layout: a backdrop, edge, or visual anchor. The key idea is spatial, not a particular color formula. The source names charcoal and baby blue, but it does not identify a paint brand, formulation, surface-preparation method, coverage rate, or number of coats.
When this idea fits
- The shed is visible from a patio or seating area.
- You want the largest visual change with relatively few categories of materials.
- The building’s existing footprint already works for the outdoor-room layout.
Questions to settle before painting
- Which exterior surfaces are actually suitable for the coating you intend to use?
- Does the shed’s condition require repairs before a finish change will look durable?
- Will the chosen color support the surrounding patio and planting scheme?
Those are project-specific decisions; the 2015 gallery does not establish answers. Treat the makeover as a design direction rather than a paint specification.

2. Give shed doors a focused refresh
A door makeover can change the first thing visitors notice without altering the entire building. One example uses paint already on hand and a hinge-and-handle kit to finish the doors. The visual lesson is that a relatively small area can carry much of a shed’s character, especially when the doors face a path or patio.
Refreshing the doors also lets you separate appearance from the rest of the shed. If the walls are serviceable but the entry looks worn, a door-only project may be a sensible first phase. Hardware is a concrete category to investigate, but the source gives no door thickness, hinge spacing, handle dimensions, fastener type, or compatibility guidance. Measure the existing door and frame before buying anything, and confirm that replacement hardware suits the construction.
Design choices to make
- Decide whether the door color should blend with the walls or act as an accent.
- Choose hardware for the door’s actual weight and mounting pattern, not just its appearance.
- Check that the finished handle and hinges allow the door to open as intended.
The example demonstrates a targeted visual upgrade; it does not provide an installation procedure or prove that one kit fits every shed.
3. Add function to a prefab shed
The prefab-shed makeover combines several modest additions: paint, shutters, and a ramp. The ramp is the functional centerpiece because it allows a mower or wheelbarrow to be wheeled into the shed rather than lifted over a threshold. Planting beds and a small patio then tie the building into the landscape.

This is a useful model when the shed already stores bulky equipment but feels awkward to approach. The project addresses both the path to the door and the way the building looks from the yard. Shutters supply a house-like detail, while the planting and patio keep the shed from reading as an isolated prefabricated unit.
Break the project into decisions
- Identify the movement problem. Decide which equipment needs a smoother route and where the approach should begin.
- Plan the entry area. A ramp changes the threshold and the space immediately outside the door, so account for how the door swings and how equipment will turn.
- Select exterior details. Shutters and paint can make the prefab shell look intentional, but their dimensions and attachment methods are not specified in the source.
- Connect the edges. Planting beds and a small patio provide the landscape transition shown in the example.
The gallery does not state ramp slope, load capacity, foundation requirements, shutter size, or drainage treatment. Those details must be established for the particular shed, site, and equipment before construction.
4. Use trim and reclaimed material for character
The barn-style example relies on paint, trim, and decorative accents, then adds an awning made from a reused yard tarp attached to a wooden frame. It demonstrates how a shed can gain a distinctive identity without a complete rebuild. Trim supplies lines and visual definition; the awning introduces a practical-looking feature while giving an existing material a second use.
Why the combination works
- Paint unifies the exterior finish.
- Trim emphasizes edges and openings that might otherwise disappear.
- Decorative accents reinforce the barn-style theme.
- A reused tarp and wooden frame create an awning concept without requiring a manufactured canopy in the example.
The source does not describe the tarp’s condition, dimensions, attachment hardware, wind performance, or water management. A reused material should therefore be evaluated for the actual exposure and load it will face rather than copied as a guaranteed construction detail.

5. Convert the interior into an art studio
The studio example is fundamentally different from the cosmetic makeovers. It adds a window, electricity, insulation, drywall, trim, paint, and shelving. Together, those changes support a working interior rather than simple storage.
Because it changes the building’s use, this option has the broadest scope. A window affects the wall; electricity introduces building-service work; insulation and drywall change the interior assembly; shelving determines how supplies occupy the room. Paint remains part of the transformation, but it is only one element in a larger conversion.

- Confirm that the structure and location are appropriate for an occupied workspace.
- Define what the window, lighting, outlets, insulation, and storage must accomplish before selecting materials.

What the published costs do—and do not—tell you
Only two dollar figures appear in the source, both tied to projects described in the 2015 article updated August 18, 2015:
- $12: a hinge-and-handle kit used for the door refresh.
- $40: paint, trim, and decorative accents in the barn-style makeover.
These are historical anecdotal project costs, not current prices, complete budgets, or estimates for labor and site work. They exclude any items not mentioned, and they cannot be used to price the patio, ramp, planting beds, awning frame, or studio conversion. The other examples have no stated cost.
A practical planning checklist
Use the examples as a brief for deciding what to investigate next:
- Define the outcome. Write down whether you want appearance, easier access, landscape integration, or a new interior use.
- Record the existing condition. Note which parts are sound, which are worn, and which affect the project’s scope.
- Separate visual items from building work. Paint and trim are not equivalent to a ramp, window, insulation, or electrical service.
- Measure before selecting categories. Door hardware, shutters, shelving, and ramps must relate to the actual shed and equipment.
- Check site and local requirements. The inspiration source does not cover structural capacity, electrical rules, insulation performance, drainage, or permits.
- Phase the work deliberately. A door refresh or repaint can stand alone; an interior studio conversion should be planned as a coordinated building project.
- Keep the budget honest. Use the $12 and $40 figures only as dated anecdotes, then obtain current material and labor prices for your location.
Limits of the inspiration examples
The gallery is photo-led editorial coverage, not a technical manual. It does not establish a universal renovation sequence, paint brand or formulation, surface-preparation method, product compatibility, structural requirements, electrical instructions, insulation specifications, safety procedures, or permitting requirements. It also provides no named statistics, formal study, or firsthand testing. Those limits do not diminish the design ideas; they define what still needs verification before work begins.
