For ordinary seams in woven fabric and traditional quilt piecing, start with a straight stitch. Use a narrow zigzag when a seam needs to stretch, a blind-hem stitch for a discreet machine-sewn hem, a long straight stitch for temporary basting or gathering, and topstitching when you want a visible line for finish or reinforcement.
Match the stitch to the fabric and the job, and test it on a scrap first. For traditional patchwork and quilting, straight-stitch capability is enough to get started.

At a glance: which stitch should you choose?
| Choice | Best for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Straight stitch | Stable seams, construction, basting, gathering, and visible straight lines | Test length and tension on the project fabric |
| Narrow zigzag | Seams that need flexibility, stretchable hems, and simple raw-edge finishing | Use a compatible foot and needle plate with enough room for the needle swing |
| Blind-hem stitch | A machine-sewn hem with little visible stitching on the outside | Test how much fabric the wide stitch catches |
| Long straight stitch | Temporary basting and gathering | Test whether needle holes show or the machine makes empty stitches |
| Topstitching | Visible reinforcement, edge control, or decoration | Practice spacing from the visible side; use a guide if helpful |
1. Straight stitch: everyday seams and quilt piecing
The straight stitch is the basic machine stitch for garments, home décor, crafts, and ordinary seams in woven fabric. It is also the standard choice for traditional quilt piecing and many straight-line quilting tasks. The Sewing and Craft Alliance’s SEW-lutions straight-stitch guide describes it for seams, topstitching, and edgestitching.
For seams, that guide suggests a stitch length of 2–2.5 mm, depending on fabric; a shorter length can help with lightweight fabric that puckers. These are starting points, not universal settings. Test on the fabric you plan to sew and follow your machine manual.
How to use it
- Choose a straight stitch and a suitable needle and foot for the project.
- Test stitch length and tension on a scrap of the same fabric.
- For patchwork, keep the seam allowance consistent; for quilting, test on the same layers as the quilt.
- Secure seam ends as directed by your machine manual.
A straight stitch is also used for basting and topstitching, but those tasks call for different placement or length. See the sections below.
2. Narrow zigzag: stretch and raw-edge finishing
A zigzag alternates the needle from side to side. When used for a seam, a narrow zigzag can flex with knit fabrics or woven fabrics made with stretch fibers. It can also help reduce thread breakage in stressed areas, finish seam allowances to control fraying, and hem stretchable garments. The Sewing and Craft Alliance’s SEW-lutions zigzag guide recommends testing the stitch so it lies flat and does not tunnel.
There is no single width and length for every fabric or machine. Follow the manual and test the result on a sample before sewing the finished piece.

How to use it
- Choose a narrow zigzag for a flexible seam, or a suitable zigzag setting for edge finishing.
- Check that the presser foot and needle plate allow the full needle swing.
- Sew a test on the project fabric and inspect both sides for tunneling, puckering, or skipped stitches.
- Adjust the stitch within the machine’s recommended range until it lies flat and flexes as needed.
Do not sew a wide zigzag with a straight-stitch-only foot or plate unless the manual specifically allows it; the needle can strike the foot or plate.
3. Blind-hem stitch: discreet machine hemming
A machine blind-hem stitch combines several straight or narrow stitches with a wider stitch that catches the folded hem. The aim is for that wider stitch to catch only a small amount of the garment fabric, making the outside stitches subtle. The Sewing and Craft Alliance’s SEW-lutions blind-hem guide recommends testing on the same fabric as the project because thickness affects how much the needle catches.
How to use it
- Fold and press the hem according to the project instructions.
- Set up the blind-hem stitch and a compatible blind-hem or edge-stitching foot if your machine uses one.
- Test on matching fabric and adjust the stitch or needle position so it catches as little outer fabric as practical.
- Sew the hem, then unfold and press it.
A hand blindstitch is an alternative when the fabric or desired finish calls for hand sewing; see the Sewing and Craft Alliance’s hand-stitching techniques.
4. Long straight stitch: basting and gathering
Basting temporarily holds fabric pieces in place until permanent construction stitching is done. A long straight stitch can also draw up fullness for gathering. The Sewing and Craft Alliance’s straight-stitch guide gives 6 mm as an example length for basting and gathering and notes that some machines offer a longer dedicated basting option.
Test first: some machines may make empty stitches between long stitches, and needle holes can show in some fabrics. Use your manual to find the longest suitable setting.

How to use it
- Set a long straight stitch or the machine’s basting option.
- Test on the same fabric to see whether the needle holes remain visible.
- Sew the temporary line, leaving thread ends accessible if you need to remove the stitches or draw up gathers.
- Remove basting when it has served its purpose, taking care not to damage the fabric.
5. Topstitching: a visible, useful finish
Topstitching is straight stitching on the visible right side of the fabric. It can be decorative or hold material in place. Edgestitching is a related line sewn close to an edge. For even spacing, use the presser-foot edge as a guide, or consider a quilting guide or removable basting tape. The Sewing and Craft Alliance’s SEW-lutions topstitching guide covers these techniques.
A twin needle makes two straight rows on the right side joined by zigzag on the underside, a finish often used on knits. Check your machine manual and needle instructions before using one.

- Choose the visible side of the fabric as the side to sew from.
- Test stitch length, thread, and spacing on a scrap.
- Guide the fabric using the presser-foot edge or another suitable guide.
- For twin-needle work, confirm that the machine supports the needle and setup.
Choosing a stitch for sewing and quilting
Compare the fabric and the result you want before choosing:
- Stable woven seam or traditional quilt piecing: use a straight stitch.
- Seam that needs to stretch: try a narrow zigzag.
- Hem that should show little stitching on the outside: try a blind-hem stitch.
- Temporary hold or gathered fullness: use a long straight stitch after testing.
- Visible reinforcement or decoration: use topstitching.
The Sewing and Craft Alliance’s quilting-tools guide says a machine only needs straight-stitch capability for traditional patchwork and quilting. Machine appliqué may call for zigzag or blind-hem techniques, depending on the method; Utah State University Extension’s machine appliqué guide describes machine appliqué techniques.

What stitch should I use for stretch fabric?
Use a narrow zigzag when a seam needs flexibility. Test it on the fabric and check that your foot and needle plate allow the needle to swing safely.
What stitch is best for traditional quilt piecing?
Use a straight stitch and keep the seam allowance consistent. The Sewing and Craft Alliance’s quilting-tools guide says straight-stitch capability is sufficient for traditional patchwork and quilting.
When should I use a long stitch?
Use a long straight stitch for temporary basting or gathering. Test first because needle holes may show and some machines may make empty stitches between long stitches.
How can I make a machine blind hem less visible?
Test on the same fabric and adjust the setup so the wide stitch catches only a small amount of the folded hem. Unfold and press the test to check the outside appearance.
The Bottom Line
Use a straight stitch for stable seams and traditional quilt piecing, a narrow zigzag when a seam needs to stretch, and a blind-hem stitch for a discreet machine hem. Long straight stitches are useful for temporary basting or gathering, while topstitching adds a deliberate visible line. Test every choice on matching fabric before sewing the finished project.
