The best way to gift wrap a wine bottle depends on the finish you want and whether the recipient needs to carry it. Use diagonal gift paper for a classic look, gathered tissue or cellophane for a soft decorative finish, furoshiki fabric when reuse and a handle matter, a dish towel for a practical two-part gift, or a ready-made wine bag when speed is the priority.
These methods work with ordinary bottle-shaped gifts, but measure your bottle and material before cutting: a Burgundy bottle, Champagne bottle and tall spirits bottle do not all need the same amount of wrap.

1. Wrap the bottle diagonally in gift paper
This is the traditional wrapped-present look. Use sturdy gift paper, ribbon or tape, scissors and a tag. Choose a sheet large enough to cover the bottle’s height and circumference; there is no single paper size that fits every bottle.

How to do it
- Lay the paper face down and place the bottle diagonally across it, leaving enough paper beyond the neck and base.
- Fold one corner neatly toward the bottle and begin rolling the bottle across the sheet.
- Keep the roll smooth and snug without crushing the paper around the glass.
- At the base, fold or tuck the excess paper inward so the bottom is covered.
- Secure the seam and base with tape, then finish with ribbon and a gift tag.
Penfolds summarizes the technique as: “Place the bottle diagonally across the paper, fold a corner neatly toward the bottle, and wrap with care – tucking the excess at the base, rolling smoothly, and securing to finish.” Wine Enthusiast also demonstrates rolling from a paper point and folding the lower paper around the base.
Best for
Choose paper when the wrapped appearance is more important than having a handle. A bottle wrapped this way is easiest to transport inside a separate tote or box.
2. Gather tissue paper or cellophane at the neck
Gathering material around the bottle avoids the precise folds required by ordinary gift paper. Tissue creates an opaque, softer presentation; clear cellophane shows the bottle and produces a crisp, crinkled finish. Cellophane is more flexible than traditional gift wrap and is available in ready-made wine-bag formats as well.

How to do it
- Cut or select a piece large enough to rise above the bottle neck and wrap fully around the body.
- Set the bottle in the center and bring the material upward around it.
- Gather the excess evenly at the neck, smoothing large wrinkles as you go.
- Secure the gathered top with ribbon, twine or a tie, leaving a short decorative plume above the closure.
- Add a tag or a second ribbon if you want more structure.
Best for
This is the low-fuss choice when you want a decorative finish but do not want to calculate diagonal folds. It is also useful for bottles with shapes that are awkward to wrap in a flat sheet.
3. Tie a reusable furoshiki bottle wrap
A square furoshiki cloth turns the wrapping into a reusable textile gift. MUJI’s bottle instructions use a square cloth centered under the bottle and finish with a tied handle, so the package can be carried without adding a separate bag.
How to do it
- Place the square fabric flat and center the bottle on it.
- Bring two opposite corners together above the bottle and tie them securely.
- Spread the two remaining corners, wrap them around the back of the bottle and bring them to the front.
- Tie those corners into a bow, then tighten the surrounding fabric so the bottle sits firmly.
- Adjust the final knot to leave enough slack for a handle.
Use a cloth large enough to cross around your particular bottle; a small square will not leave enough fabric for secure knots or a handle. The cloth’s reuse is a practical feature, not a measured environmental guarantee.

A dish towel makes the wrapping itself part of the present. Use a clean, new towel folded lengthwise. Wine Enthusiast’s method places the bottle between the towel’s layers with the base at the fold.
How to set it up
- Fold the new towel lengthwise.
- Lay it flat and place the bottle between the layers, positioning the base at the fold.
- Wrap the towel around the bottle and secure the upper portion with a tie or ribbon that holds the fabric in place.

This option feels warm and casual and gives the recipient a useful kitchen textile. It is less formal than crisp paper and may need an additional tote if the tied towel does not form a stable handle.

A bottle-sized gift bag is the fastest route to a finished presentation. Select a bag that matches the bottle’s height and width, then add tissue paper at the opening if you want a fuller top.
How to do it
- Open the bag and check that its base is flat and its interior is free of tears.
- Lower the bottle straight into the bag until it rests on the bottom.
- Arrange one or more sheets of tissue around the neck and let the edges rise above the opening.
- Use the bag’s handles or ribbon closure, if supplied, and attach a tag.

Choose a bag for last-minute gifting, repeated events or any situation where the recipient needs a straightforward carrying option. A bag is presentation packaging; do not treat it as protective transport packaging unless its construction and any insert are specifically designed for that purpose.
Small upgrades and alternatives
- Ribbon and twine: Add a tag, a sprig or a simple knot to any method, provided the decoration does not interfere with a secure grip.
- Two-bottle wrap: A larger piece of fabric or paper can hold two bottles together, but check that the combined weight is comfortable and that both bases are supported.
- Sweater sleeve: A clean, repurposed sweater sleeve can act as a soft cover for a casual gift; secure both ends so the bottle cannot slide out.
- Rigid wine box: A box gives a more structured presentation. It is not automatically protective: safe transport depends on a correctly sized box and suitable internal support.
How to decide in under a minute

- Want the classic wrapped-present effect? Choose diagonal gift paper.
- Prefer a gathered, decorative finish? Use tissue or cellophane.
- Want the wrapping to be reused or carried by hand? Tie a furoshiki cloth.

Whichever method you choose, keep the bottle upright while finishing it, make sure knots and tape hold before handing it over, and match the material to the bottle’s actual size.
