Botropolis’s 50 papercraft robots are a roundup of individual model links, not one downloadable template file. The collection mixes familiar characters and original designs; for any model whose link still works, the basic process is to download its template, print it, cut and fold the pieces, then assemble them.

What the 50-robot collection includes

WonderHowTo’s May 28, 2010 roundup describes Botropolis as a collection of 50 robot papercraft downloads, and WIRED independently reported on the linked collection on May 13, 2010. These are links to separate models, so expect to choose and download templates individually rather than open a single file containing all 50 designs. WonderHowTo’s roundup and WIRED’s coverage document the historical collection.

The selection spans recognizable characters and original robot designs. Named examples include Wall-E, Robocop, Optimus Prime, R2-D2, The Terminator, Godzilla, Poco Bot, Robot Owl, Retro Bot, and Poseable Toy Robot. Poco Bot is described as having six rotation points; that feature makes it distinct from a simple static figure, though the roundup does not establish a full difficulty ranking for the models.

How to choose a model

Because the list brings together designs from different creators and hosts, compare the individual template pages before printing. Look for the details that affect the build:

  • Subject: Decide whether you want a recognizable character or an original design.
  • Construction: Check whether the model is a straightforward cut-and-fold figure or has moving parts and more involved assembly.
  • Print and cutting load: Review the number of pages and the shape and size of the pieces before committing to a print.
  • Special effect: Some designs offer an unusual visual feature rather than only a finished robot figure.
  • Availability: The roundup dates to 2010 and links to external hosts; check that a template is still available at its original destination.

A model with an optical illusion

WIRED singled out Super Robot Dog as an optical illusion. Its head is assembled inside out, and from the correct viewing angles its eyes appear to follow the viewer. This is a more unusual build than a conventional flat-faced paper figure; follow the model’s own assembly instructions closely to achieve the intended effect.

What you need to print and assemble a robot

The workflow described in the original roundup is “Just download, print, and assemble.” In practice, set out the following before you begin:

  • A ruler to help make clean folds.
  • Paper glue for joining tabs and parts.

These are practical supplies for the documented print, cut, fold, and assemble process, not a tested or brand-specific kit. Check the template’s paper and assembly directions first; the 2010 roundups do not establish one paper weight or tool set for all 50 models.

Basic build sequence

  1. Open the individual model page. Find the specific robot you want in the roundup and follow its outbound link to the host page.
  2. Check the file and instructions. Confirm that the download is available and review the page for page count, recommended paper, and any model-specific assembly notes.
  3. Print the template. Use the page settings specified by the model’s instructions so its parts retain the intended proportions.
  4. Cut and fold. Cut along the template outlines and fold along the indicated lines, using a ruler where helpful.
  5. Assemble. Join the parts and tabs with paper glue, following the model’s directions rather than assuming every robot is built the same way.

Availability and reuse cautions

The collection was covered in 2010, and its entries point to external sites. The historical roundups establish that the links existed at the time; they do not establish that every host still serves its file today. Check each destination before relying on a download.

Availability is not the same as permission to redistribute. The roundups do not establish a license for every model, so do not assume that a downloadable template may be republished or shared elsewhere. If you want to reproduce or redistribute a file, check the terms stated by its creator or host.
