A 540-square-foot apartment in Paris feels larger because its redesign treats circulation and daylight as the primary design problems, then uses Spanish-inspired color to give the compact rooms character. Interior designer Lauranne Élise Schmitt reorganized the plan into clearly defined living and sleeping zones, inserted storage as a buffer around the bathroom and toilet, and used mirrors, brushed metal, glossy wood, glass and LED-lit niches to move light through the fifth-floor home. The result is contemporary and eclectic rather than a literal rustic Mediterranean interior.

Why the layout makes a small home feel bigger
One legible route replaces many small compartments
The apartment had previously been partitioned into many small spaces. Schmitt said, “But it was partitioned into many small spaces. We had to reimagine the plan and figure out a way to improve the circulation.” Removing unnecessary breaks lets the eye travel farther and makes each square foot useful instead of assigning tiny, awkward remnants to separate functions.
The bedroom sits beyond and to the right of the kitchen. Rather than opening every room directly onto the sleeping area, the plan uses two dressing rooms to create a transition. Those storage zones help keep the toilet distinct from both bedroom and bathroom, so plumbing functions do not dominate the main living view.
A translucent door preserves separation without a dark wall
A translucent pocket door closes the bedroom when privacy is needed but avoids the visual weight of a conventional opaque swing door. Because it slides into the wall, it also removes the floor area that a hinged door would require. In the open position, the passage remains visually continuous; in the closed position, the bedroom is still screened.
The fifth floor and sloping windows do practical work
The feature links the fifth-floor position and three sloping windows with unobstructed views and abundant light. Window shape and orientation are fixed conditions, so the project’s lesson is not to copy a particular window but to avoid blocking the best daylight with tall partitions, heavy curtains or opaque doors.

The narrow table that performs four jobs
An extra-long, narrow table marks the boundary between kitchen and living room without building a full-height partition. According to the feature, it can work as a console, island, office or dining table and seat up to six people. Its value is spatial as much as practical: one linear piece establishes a threshold while retaining the sense of one connected room.

For another small apartment, the transferable principle is to choose one appropriately scaled surface that can absorb several daily activities. Exact dimensions, clearances and seating capacity would have to be recalculated for the individual room; the reported “up to six” applies to this project’s table.
How the Spanish palette is balanced
Warm colors establish the emotional center
Ochre, caramel, earth tones and rustic red connect the apartment to the owner’s Andalusian upbringing. These hues give the compact home depth and warmth instead of relying on an all-white scheme. They appear as part of an eclectic, contemporary composition, not as an attempt to recreate a traditional Spanish house.

Brushed stainless steel, chrome, mirrored doors and glossy finishes counter the denser earth colors. They catch daylight from the sloping windows and bounce it into the room, while matte paint and textiles keep the reflections from becoming visually harsh. Schmitt described the approach this way: “It’s a city apartment and you have to rediscover a sophistication specific to this place. Reflective material, used in contrast to more matte textures, is an approach that I like. Light, bright, and also dark materials can produce a result that’s visually and graphically strong.”

This contrast is more controlled than simply adding mirrors everywhere. A few high-reflection planes do the light-moving work; surrounding painted and natural surfaces supply texture and visual rest.
Named paint colors in the project
The feature identifies Bilboquet and Calcaire by Argile, along with Dessert and Parchemin by Ressource Paints. Those names document the selections for this apartment; the article does not publish color-system codes, finish levels, quantities or current retail availability. Anyone adapting the idea should obtain physical samples and assess them in the actual room, because daylight from a sloping window can shift markedly through the day.
The niches: storage, display and reflected light

For a general adaptation, treat the lighting as a layer for display rather than the room’s only illumination. A concealed, serviceable strip-light system can reproduce the idea, but wiring, ventilation and access should be planned before the niche is closed.

Kitchen finishes that connect color and material
The kitchen niche uses ceramic tiles selected to match an Alicante marble worktop. That pairing gives the work surface and vertical niche a visual relationship without requiring the entire kitchen to be clad in stone. Other described finishes include zellige tile, a custom sink and silver-finish bronze fittings.
Zellige’s irregular surface can provide the matte-to-gloss variation that the broader scheme depends on, while metal fittings echo the stainless-steel and chrome elsewhere. The report does not specify tile dimensions, grout color, marble thickness or supplier details, so those should not be inferred from the photographs.

A glossy mahogany-oak arched door with ribbed glass adds another curved, light-modulating element. Ribbed glass obscures a direct view while admitting a softened glow, making the opening feel less solid than a painted door. Mirrored dressing-room doors continue the reflective strategy and make storage read as part of the light plan rather than as a bank of opaque cabinets.

The paired dressing rooms are especially important in a 540-square-foot home because they absorb clothing and circulation needs at the edge of the bedroom. Keeping that storage organized protects the living room from becoming a general-purpose overflow zone.

Furniture and art: specific credits, not a shopping list
Architectural Digest credits Adriano Piazzesi armchairs, a Raymond Loewy bedside table, a Philippe Starck armchair, a Pierre Chareau lamp reissued by MCDE Gallery and a Charlotte Perriand wall lamp. These are project credits for vintage or designer pieces. The feature does not establish current retail availability, dimensions for every item or affordable substitutes.
The useful takeaway is compositional: a few distinctive pieces can carry personality when the architecture is restrained. In a smaller room, preserve the circulation path first, then select furniture whose scale and silhouette leave the table boundary and window views legible.
A practical adaptation plan for another small apartment
The following steps are general interpretation of the reported design, not tested instructions from Schmitt. They translate the project’s principles into decisions a homeowner or decorator can evaluate.

Draw the entry, kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and window paths. Mark door swings and the clear route through the room. Remove or replace partitions that interrupt movement without providing essential privacy or storage.
- Assign every large element more than one job. Consider a narrow table that can serve as work surface, dining table and kitchen support. Check seating, legroom and appliance clearances at full use rather than judging only the tabletop footprint.
- Place storage at thresholds. Use wardrobes or dressing rooms to buffer private functions where possible. The goal is to keep bathroom and toilet doors from opening directly into the most public sightline.
- Protect the strongest daylight. Keep the area in front of windows and sloping glazing visually open. If privacy requires a door, investigate a translucent or glazed solution that maintains borrowed light while meeting acoustic and privacy needs.
- Build a two-part color scheme. Start with one warm family—ochre, caramel, earth or muted red—and select quieter supporting surfaces. Test the colors beside the floor, stone and tile, not on an isolated white card.
- Add reflection selectively. A mirrored door, brushed metal niche or chrome fitting can return light without turning every surface glossy. Balance each reflective plane with matte paint, wood, textile or irregular tile.
- Use vertical display to avoid floor clutter. A shallow niche with concealed lighting can replace freestanding shelves, provided the wall construction and electrical access are suitable.
- Check the evening version of the room. The project combines daylight with LED-lit niches. Plan task, ambient and display lighting separately so the room remains usable when the windows are no longer contributing light.
What this project does—and does not—prove
The apartment demonstrates one coherent solution to a small Parisian plan: clearer circulation, compact zoning, multifunctional furniture, warm color and controlled reflection. It does not establish that a particular paint brand, tile, marble or lighting product will produce the same brightness in another building. Orientation, ceiling height, window condition, neighboring buildings and existing electrical infrastructure can change the result substantially.
It is also important not to read the 540-square-foot figure as a universal benchmark for how much space a couple or family needs. The report gives approximate room areas and a description of the completed design, but no occupancy brief, budget or construction schedule. Those missing variables affect whether the same arrangement is practical elsewhere.

- Improve the route through the apartment before adding decorative features.

Schmitt summarized the planning objective in the Architectural Digest feature: “In the end, every function has its place and no square inch is wasted.” In this apartment, that discipline—not the Spanish palette alone—is what makes the small footprint feel deliberate rather than cramped.
