Quick verdict
| Template | Best for | Why choose it | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photographer (Muted) | General portfolios and photography businesses | Clean, restrained, portfolio-first presentation | Needs distinctive branding to avoid looking generic |
| Family Photographer (Soft) | Family, newborn, portrait, and lifestyle photographers | Approachable visual tone with portfolio and booking potential | Too gentle for some commercial or architectural brands |
| Events Photographer (Formal) | Wedding, corporate, and event photographers | Professional presentation suited to event clients | Can feel interchangeable without testimonials and specific copy |
| Real Estate Photographer (Clean) | Property, interiors, and architectural work | Fast-scanning, businesslike structure | Needs stronger service, turnaround, and inquiry content |
| Photojournalist (Adventurous) | Documentary, editorial, and travel photography | Supports visual storytelling and licensing-oriented work | May be too editorial for a local session business |

Wix currently groups its photography templates into Events & Portraits, Commercial & Editorial, and Travel & Documentary. The names and descriptions below reflect the current catalog information supplied for this article, checked August 16–18, 2026, but availability can change.
#1 Best Overall
1. Best overall: Photographer (Muted)
Photographer (Muted) is the safest choice when you need a flexible photography website rather than a narrowly specialized one. Its restrained styling puts attention on the images, while a general structure can be adapted for portraits, fashion, editorial projects, fine art, or commercial work.
It works best for a photographer whose first job is to help visitors understand the quality and range of the work. Organize the portfolio into meaningful projects or categories rather than one undifferentiated image wall. Add a short positioning statement, location, services, selected clients or publications, and a prominent inquiry button.
The trade-off is that minimal design is not automatically memorable. Replace the template’s sample copy, establish a clear type and color system, and use a smaller selection of stronger images. If every competitor uses a similar muted portfolio layout, your project descriptions and brand voice need to do more of the differentiation.
2. Best for family and portrait photographers: Family Photographer (Soft)
Family Photographer (Soft) is the clearest fit for newborn, family, lifestyle, and approachable portrait businesses. Wix describes this type of template as being designed for family and portrait work, with the Wix Portfolio app and sections for introducing the photographer and services.
The softer visual language can make a prospective client feel more comfortable, especially when the buying decision depends on trust and personality. Use the homepage to show representative sessions, explain what happens before and after the shoot, identify your service area, and lead visitors to an inquiry or booking path.
It is less suitable if your work is deliberately severe, technical, architectural, or high-fashion. A portrait photographer can also outgrow the default structure if the business needs detailed package comparisons, multiple photographers, studio availability, or complex client delivery. Those requirements may need additional Wix features and configuration.
3. Best for weddings and events: Events Photographer (Formal)
Events Photographer (Formal) is a strong starting point for wedding, corporate, and event photographers who want a polished, reassuring presentation. Wix identifies this type of design for events, weddings, and corporate photography.
Event clients usually need more than a gallery. They want to know whether you cover their location, what the process looks like, how to request availability, and why they should trust you with an important day. Add testimonials, recognizable client or venue references where permitted, package guidance, a clear contact form, and a realistic response-time promise.
The formal look is a starting point, not a substitute for personality. Replace generic romantic copy with specific information about your approach, coverage, deliverables, and booking process. If your style is candid, colorful, or unconventional, adjust the typography and imagery so the site does not promise a more traditional service than you provide.
4. Best for real-estate and commercial work: Real Estate Photographer (Clean)
Real Estate Photographer (Clean) suits property, interiors, architecture, and other commercial photography where clients need to scan projects quickly. A clean presentation helps visitors compare locations, property types, and deliverables without decorative effects competing with the images.
Build the site around project categories such as residential, commercial, interiors, aerial, or hospitality. State your service area, turnaround time, licensing terms, image count, and delivery format. A real-estate client is often evaluating operational reliability as much as visual style, so include a straightforward quote or inquiry path.
The template alone will not create business-to-business credibility. Add case studies, client testimonials, publication or agency work, insurance or certification information where relevant, and a concise explanation of how bookings are handled. If projects vary substantially, avoid making the homepage a single long gallery that gives no indication of the services behind it.
Rank #3
5. Best for photojournalists and documentary photographers: Photojournalist (Adventurous)
Photojournalist (Adventurous) is the best match on this list for documentary, reportage, travel, and editorial work. Wix describes this type of template with a welcome page, galleries, and a digital store for high-resolution files and licensing-oriented work.
Its strength is context. Documentary photography benefits from project titles, captions, dates, locations, credits, and short narratives that explain what the viewer is seeing. Treat each body of work as a project rather than uploading a random sequence of attractive images.
The editorial presentation can be excessive for a photographer whose main goal is local portrait-session leads. If you primarily sell appointments, make the booking or inquiry action as visible as the work. If you sell downloads or licenses, configure product descriptions, usage terms, file delivery, payment, tax, and rights language separately; a template’s suggested store does not constitute a complete licensing operation.

Drone Photographer is a logical specialist choice for aerial, landscape, outdoor, and drone-video work. Wix describes it as supporting drone imagery and video and indicates that Wix Bookings can be used for photography-service appointments.
Use it when moving images and large, immersive visuals are central to the offer. Organize work by service—such as real estate, construction progress, tourism, inspection, or landscape commissions—so visitors understand what they can hire you to do.
Its main risk is technical rather than aesthetic. Full-width images, video backgrounds, and large galleries can make a page difficult to use on a phone or cellular connection. Export appropriately sized web images, avoid unnecessary duplicate uploads, test gallery swiping and form completion on a phone, and keep original client files in a separate storage or delivery workflow.
Rank #4
Three Wix photography choices to treat cautiously
“Worst” is not an official Wix rating. It means least suitable for a professional photography business when clarity, navigation, mobile use, and conversion matter. A design that is wrong for a wedding photographer may still suit an artist. Also, the older review that criticized specific templates was first published on March 31, 2019; its named templates and visual criticisms should not be treated as confirmed descriptions of Wix’s current catalog. See the original review for that historical context.
1. Full-screen imagery with weak text contrast
A dramatic hero image is a problem if the menu, contact link, pricing information, or booking button disappears against the photograph. Check the homepage with both bright and dark images, then view it on a phone. A visitor should not have to guess where to start.
2. Effects-first layouts
Parallax, animation, collage layouts, and oversized visual transitions may look impressive in a preview but delay the portfolio and make projects harder to scan. Choose a more restrained design if a client should reach a relevant gallery in one or two taps.
3. Niche templates with mismatched business content
A food, travel, or art-oriented structure can force a wedding or commercial photographer into awkward page names and calls to action. Before committing, rewrite the navigation using your actual business terms: Portfolio, Services, About, Pricing or Packages, Client Galleries, and Contact. If those labels do not fit naturally, choose another template.
How to choose the right Wix template
- For a portfolio-only site: prioritize gallery hierarchy, whitespace, project descriptions, image cropping, and a visible contact path. Start with Photographer (Muted) or another clean general Photographer template.
- For portrait or wedding sessions: prioritize warmth, testimonials, packages, booking, and client galleries. Start with Family Photographer (Soft) or Events Photographer (Formal).
- For commercial, editorial, or property work: prioritize fast scanning, project categories, credibility, licensing or inquiry information, and restrained design. Start with Real Estate Photographer (Clean), Photojournalist (Adventurous), or Photographer (Muted).
- For prints and downloads: confirm that the chosen setup supports the products you actually sell. Photojournalist, Art Photographer, and Wildlife Photographer may be relevant starting points, but a suggested store or digital-product feature still needs configuration for checkout, fulfillment, rights, taxes, and delivery.
- For appointments: verify the booking flow on mobile and check availability, deposits, cancellation rules, payment methods, packages, and confirmation messages before launch.
What makes a good photography template?
Portfolio presentation
- The strongest work appears immediately, without an elaborate splash screen.
- Galleries are organized by projects or client-relevant categories.
- Visitors can view both landscape and portrait images without awkward crops.
- There is space for captions, project descriptions, case studies, or credits.
- The path from homepage to relevant gallery is short.
Wix promotes portfolio templates with galleries, visual projects, case studies, testimonials, FAQs, forms, chat, SEO settings, analytics, and custom domains. Check which elements are actually present in the specific template and account you select.

Make the primary action obvious: Inquire, Book a session, Request a quote, or View availability. Keep the form short enough for a phone. Include location, service type, expected deliverables, and a realistic response time. Avoid hiding essential information behind a menu icon, hover state, or image overlay that becomes unreadable on certain photographs.
Best Value
Mobile behavior
Do not infer mobile quality from a template thumbnail. Test the actual edited site for menu visibility, text contrast, image crops, gallery swiping, page length, form completion, booking, and loading over a cellular connection. Custom images, video, animations, and added apps can change the result substantially.
Wix features you may need after choosing a template
A template is starter content, not a finished photography business. Wix’s photography materials mention Wix Portfolio, Wix Pro Gallery, Wix Photo Albums, Wix Bookings, online stores, digital products, print-on-demand, blogs, SEO settings, forms, chat, and analytics. The exact app configuration, plan requirement, payment support, and availability can depend on your country, account, and business setup.
- Wix Portfolio or Pro Gallery: useful for organizing projects and presenting visual work.
- Wix Bookings: relevant to sessions and appointments. Wix describes service catalogs, booking rules, deposits, cancellation policies, payments, packages, and memberships on its photography scheduling page.
- Wix Photo Albums: potentially useful for private client collections, particularly for weddings, families, and events. It should not be treated as a complete replacement for specialist proofing, backup, or archival software.
- Store and digital products: useful for occasional prints or downloads, but higher-volume sales may need more specialized fulfillment, licensing, inventory, or delivery tools.
- Forms, analytics, and SEO: necessary for understanding inquiries and helping prospective clients find the site, but they still require accurate copy, consent notices where applicable, and ongoing setup.
Wix promotes free-start options for photography websites, but a custom domain, some business features, and commerce functionality may require a paid plan. No plan price is quoted here because pricing and included features can change; check the official Wix site for current terms.

Large image files
Upload web-appropriate versions rather than exposing original camera files on public pages. Use previews or thumbnails for large collections, test on cellular data, and retain high-resolution masters in a dedicated storage or client-delivery system.
Public portfolios versus private client galleries
A public portfolio is marketing. A client gallery may contain personal, confidential, or commercially sensitive work. Wedding, family, boudoir, school, and commercial photographers should consider restricted access, passwords, usage permissions, and explicit client consent before publishing images.
Generic template copy
Replace every placeholder with your niche, service area, deliverables, turnaround time, qualification or starting-price language, and inquiry instructions. “Welcome to my website” does not tell a prospective client whether you are available, suitable, or affordable for their project.
Changing templates later
Choose carefully and preserve important content before a major redesign. Expect to recheck desktop and mobile layouts, galleries, forms, and app configurations after substantial changes; do not assume every page arrangement or integration will carry over perfectly.
Final recommendations
Choose Photographer (Muted) if you want the most adaptable portfolio foundation. Choose Family Photographer (Soft) for family and portrait sessions, Events Photographer (Formal) for weddings and corporate events, Real Estate Photographer (Clean) for property and architecture, Photojournalist (Adventurous) for documentary and editorial storytelling, and Drone Photographer for aerial specialists.
Whichever template you choose, judge the finished site by whether a visitor can quickly see relevant work, understand what you offer, trust you, and take the next step. Wix supplies the framework; your image selection, business information, mobile testing, privacy decisions, and booking or sales setup determine whether the website actually works.
