For a fall wreath that suits your home, start with the base and the way you want to build: tuck stems into open grapevine, cover foam with foliage or fabric, or decorate straw and burlap for a harvest look. Choose a palette and one focal accent before filling in smaller details. The 66 designs below are adaptable starting points—not separately tested recipes—and include faux-floral, thrifted, reused and natural-material approaches.

Choose a base and composition before you decorate

The base determines what can be tucked, wrapped or attached. Grapevine has an open, rustic structure that accepts inserted stems and accents. Foam generally needs a covering layer before decoration; straw and burlap offer a harvest-ready texture, while wire frames are another option. Home Depot recommends straw, burlap or grapevine for fall wreaths and describes covering foam before decorating; First Day of Home also discusses foam and wire alternatives. Home Depot’s wreath guide and First Day of Home’s fall wreath tutorial offer examples.

Decide whether you want full-circle coverage or an asymmetrical arrangement. For the latter, Goodwill’s example puts a floral cluster around the 8–10 o’clock area and a bow near 2 o’clock; treat those positions as a useful layout, not a rule. Pick the ribbon and largest accent early, then arrange the pieces before fastening them.

Grapevine and asymmetrical florals

  1. Gather rust, gold and cream faux flowers on one side of a grapevine form; finish with a bow opposite.
  2. Cluster burgundy blooms and a few berries along the lower-left arc, leaving most of the vine visible.
  3. Arrange two sizes of orange flowers in a crescent, with a narrow ribbon bow near the top.
  4. Pair pale dried or faux hydrangeas with a handful of brown seed pods on one side.
  5. Place a small spray of golden leaves and berries across the lower-right curve.
  6. Mix deep red and muted tan flowers, using the vine itself as the main background.
  7. Build a loose half-moon of cream blooms and grasses, with a restrained brown ribbon accent.
  8. Make a small floral cluster the focal point and add one or two iron or wood ornaments saved from other seasonal décor.
  9. Use only a few bright orange flowers and a wire-edged bow for a light, open arrangement.
  10. Combine plum-toned flowers, tawny grasses and a narrow ribbon in a side cluster.
  11. Let one stem of berries trail slightly beyond a compact flower grouping for a less formal outline.
  12. Set a miniature faux pumpkin beside a cluster of leaves and flowers, keeping the opposite side mostly bare.

Leaf-forward designs

  1. Layer faux maple leaves around the full circle, shifting between gold, orange and brown.
  2. Cover one arc with preserved fall leaves and leave the remaining grapevine exposed.
  3. Use metallic-finished fresh leaves as a short-lived accent on a simple base.
  4. Overlap leaves in alternating directions around a foam form for a dense, continuous surface.
  5. Arrange russet leaves in a diagonal sweep across a straw wreath.
  6. Mix green-gold and red leaves for a transition-season palette rather than an all-orange look.
  7. Add small berry clusters at intervals among layered leaves.
  8. Pair broad leaves with a few pinecones, keeping the cones concentrated near the lower curve.
  9. Create a narrow leaf band over burlap and leave the burlap visible as a border.
  10. Use only a few large leaves at the top and bottom of a grapevine circle for a spare design.
  11. Make a two-tone wreath with warm gold leaves on one side and purplish-red on the other.
  12. Arrange leaves in a loose fan beneath a simple ribbon bow.

Harvest and pumpkin accents

  1. Lay wheat sheaves around a straw form and tie them in place with ribbon or suitable wire.
  2. Make a grapevine crescent of faux berries, mums and two miniature pumpkins.
  3. Arrange orange and cream mums around a small pumpkin placed off center.
  4. Use seed pods and pinecones as the main accents, with just a few leaves for color.
  5. Pair faux wheat with small berries and a compact bow on a burlap-covered base.
  6. Group several miniature pumpkins along the lower arc of an otherwise leafy wreath.
  7. Combine mums and seed pods in a concentrated cluster on one side of grapevine.
  8. Alternate small pinecones and berry sprigs around a straw ring.
  9. Make a pumpkin the single focal point, then frame it with greenery and a few flowers.
  10. Mix one miniature pumpkin with acorns and dried grasses for a quiet harvest arrangement.
  11. Use faux berries and mums in a full-circle design, leaving the pumpkin accents out for a lighter look.
  12. Build a harvest crescent from wheat, seed pods and pinecones, with a ribbon bow at the opposite side.

Natural textures and gathered materials

  1. Arrange dried hydrangeas in a loose cluster on grapevine and add only a small ribbon accent.
  2. Layer dried grasses with twigs along one half of a wreath form.
  3. Use pinecones and acorns as the principal decoration, spaced over visible grapevine.
  4. Mix seed pods, slender twigs and a few dried flowers for a restrained, earthy look.
  5. Cover a straw base with dried grasses, then add a small bunch of berries.
  6. Make a twig-focused wreath with scattered leaves and no bow.
  7. Combine dried hydrangeas and pinecones, keeping the colors muted and the form partly visible.
  8. Use grasses and seed pods to create a textured crescent, with a narrow ribbon loop.
  9. Gather acorns and small cones into one corner of a simple vine wreath.
  10. Build a full, layered ring of dried foliage and grasses around a covered form.
  11. Contrast pale dried flowers with dark twigs on a grapevine base.
  12. Arrange seed pods and grasses in a vertical spray at the top of a straw wreath.

Thrifted, reused and repurposed ideas

  1. Start with a secondhand grapevine form and add only the seasonal pieces needed to refresh it.
  2. Reuse ribbon from stored décor as the bow for a new arrangement of faux leaves.
  3. Repurpose leftover iron stars or other small seasonal ornaments among fall flowers.
  4. Combine thrifted faux flowers in one palette, trimming or rearranging stems to fit the form.
  5. Give an old wreath a new look by adding a concentrated cluster of berries and leaves instead of replacing every piece.
  6. Use salvaged ornaments as a few accents against plain burlap or visible grapevine.
  7. Make a mostly reused wreath from saved foliage, ribbon and one newly added focal flower.
  8. Wrap a plain foam base with fabric or reclaimed ribbon, then decorate with thrifted seasonal pieces.
  9. Pair mismatched secondhand flowers by color family and arrange them in one asymmetrical cluster.
  10. Refresh a straw wreath with reused ribbon and a few natural pinecones.

Whimsical statement-piece arrangements

  1. Set one oversized faux pumpkin among greenery and flowers on a grapevine base.
  2. Place a large pumpkin at the lower side of a leafy wreath and balance it with a bow opposite.
  3. Frame a statement pumpkin with mums, leaving enough greenery visible to keep the focal point distinct.
  4. Arrange leaves and berries around a single pumpkin on a covered foam form.
  5. Use a whimsical large flower as the focal accent, surrounded by smaller leaves and seed pods.
  6. Make a playful cluster of miniature pumpkins, berries and one contrasting flower on one arc.
  7. Pair a statement pumpkin with dried grasses and twigs for a rustic, less floral design.
  8. Center a bold seasonal ornament within a loose ring of foliage, berries and pinecones.

Build the wreath in a practical order

  1. Choose the location and size. Decide whether the wreath is for a door or an indoor wall, then choose a base—grapevine, foam, straw, burlap or wire—that suits the appearance and attachment approach you want.
  2. Set the palette and focal point. Home Depot suggests warm gold, orange, tan, purplish-red and brown for fall. Pick ribbon and a statement flower or pumpkin before adding smaller pieces. Lay everything out in a full-circle or asymmetrical plan.
  3. Add the broadest layer. Place greenery or foliage first if the design calls for it. A foam form needs a covering layer; with grapevine, you can leave the base exposed.
  4. Place the largest accents. Add major flowers or the statement decoration next, then fill gaps selectively with berries, cones, acorns, seed pods or twigs.
  5. Check the layout upright. Hold or hang the wreath before fastening pieces so you can see whether the balance works from the intended viewing angle.
  6. Fasten according to material and weight. Tuck suitable stems into grapevine, or use floral wire, pipe cleaners or glue where appropriate. One tutorial found hot glue alone insufficient for its oversized pumpkin and used a staple gun with pipe cleaners instead; that is a project-specific solution, not a universal method.
  7. Finish with a bow and hanging loop. Check that decorations are secure before hanging.

Make a grapevine base from collected vines

If you have suitable vines and permission to collect them, Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Garden-Based Learning activity describes making a wreath by stripping the leaves, wrapping vines around a bucket into a circle, securing loose ends with strong twine and letting the form dry before decorating. Its document gives estimates of 2–5 hours for making, about one week for drying and 1–2 hours for decorating; these are estimates for that activity, not a universal schedule. It lists vines as free and gives an estimated $0–$10 per wreath depending on decoration materials. See the Cornell grapevine wreath activity for its full instructions and supplies.

That activity says to collect vines after the first frost, practice pruning safety and take care because stiff vines can snap back. Collection permissions and rules vary by location, so check before gathering. Around younger children, use caution with glue guns, toxic glues and small objects.
