The best berry accents for a holiday wreath are winterberry, holly, rose hips, cotoneaster, ivy berries, crabapple fruit and viburnum fruit. They bring concentrated color and texture to evergreen foliage without covering its shape. Some are true berries and some are fruits commonly used as decorative material, so choose by appearance, availability, attachment needs and household safety—not by the word “berry” alone.
Seven berry and fruit accents for a holiday wreath
| Accent | What it contributes | Practical notes |
|---|---|---|
| Winterberry holly | Bright red fruit on bare stems; a strong focal color against green foliage. | Use small cut clusters. Winterberry is a holly, and all parts should be kept away from children and pets because they are poisonous if eaten. |
| Holly berries | Traditional red bunches that look natural with evergreen branches. | Only female holly plants produce fruit, and pollination is needed for fruit set if you are growing your own stems. |
| Rose hips | Distinctive, irregular fruit shapes suited to a rustic, gathered look. | The RHS recommends them for rustic wreaths. The cited guidance does not establish a comparative lifespan against other berry types. |
| Cotoneaster berries | Small berry bunches that add repeated points of color. | Place short clusters as punctuation across the wreath rather than assuming every variety or region has identical fruit. |
| Ivy berries | A natural, slightly untamed detail in berry bunches. | Use sparingly and positively identify the plant before gathering it; safety can vary among ivy species. |
| Crabapple fruit | Larger fruit accents with more visual weight than tiny berry clusters. | Wire each piece firmly and account for its weight when choosing a frame and placement. |
| Viburnum fruit | Colorful fruit that can provide a different scale and hue from red holly. | Appearance depends on species and cultivar, so describe the material you actually have rather than promising one universal shade. |
How to choose the right accent
Color and shape
Use red winterberry or holly when you want a classic Christmas contrast. Rose hips, cotoneaster and ivy create a looser, more natural pattern. Crabapples make a wreath read from farther away because each fruit is larger; viburnum lets you work with the color and form available from a particular species or cultivar.

Availability and gathering
Local availability varies with climate, season and whether a plant is fruiting. Gather only material you can identify and are legally allowed to collect. If you cannot verify a cutting, use a labeled artificial stem instead.
Weight and attachment
Small berry clusters can be wired in several places. Individual crabapples need especially firm attachment and balanced placement so they do not pull the wreath forward or loosen as it hangs.

Exposure to children and pets
Never assume an attractive fruit is edible. UNH Extension warns that all parts of holly and winterberry are poisonous if consumed. Arkansas Extension likewise warns that holly and nandina berries are poisonous to pets and people. Keep potentially poisonous material out of reach, and choose artificial accents when fallen fruit could be picked up.
Arrange berries so the wreath still looks natural
Berry accents work best as punctuation, not a solid covering. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) recommends bunches of holly, cotoneaster or ivy berries for color and mentions rose hips for rustic character. Tuck clusters into evergreen texture at uneven intervals, repeat a color three or five times, and leave some foliage visible. Cones, ribbon and ornaments can supply additional scale without competing with every berry.

How to wire a berry wreath
- Prepare the frame. Gather a wreath frame, florist wire, wire cutters and greenery, following Iowa State University Extension’s basic materials list.
- Plan the pattern. Lay berry clusters around the frame before fastening them. Check the wreath from several feet away and keep heavy fruit distributed.
- Make each cluster secure. Wrap florist wire around the stem or berry pick and the frame, then twist the ends tightly on the back. The RHS also recommends wire for securing embellishments.
- Check for movement. Gently shake the finished wreath. Rewire any cluster that swings, pinches foliage or could drop onto a walkway.
- Follow stem instructions. For artificial picks, use the maker’s guidance on indoor or outdoor exposure; not every finish or adhesive is weather-resistant.
Natural or artificial berries?
Choose natural material when
- You can identify the plant and gather it legally.
- The wreath can be placed where children and pets cannot reach fallen fruit.
- You want an organic variation in shape and color and accept seasonal upkeep.
Choose artificial material when
- Fallen berries could be eaten or carried indoors.
- You want to reuse the wreath for several seasons.
- A consistent color, size or quantity is more useful than natural variation.
Arkansas Extension specifically suggests artificial berries to prevent fallen holly or nandina berries from being picked up and eaten, and Illinois Extension includes artificial berries among holiday-decoration materials. “Artificial” does not automatically mean pet-safe: check the product’s materials, coatings and labeling rather than making a blanket safety claim.

Keep unidentified or potentially poisonous decorative berries away from inquisitive children and pets. Secure every cluster so it cannot drop, and remove fallen pieces promptly. University of Georgia Cooperative Extension horticulturist Paul Thomas cautioned that “Holly, yew and juniper berries can make you very ill if you eat a great many.” That warning is a reason to identify plant material correctly—not a substitute for identification. Do not rely on berry texture or appearance as a dependable test, and take care not to mix poison ivy vines into gathered wreath materials.

Keeping a fresh wreath presentable
Cool, moist conditions help preserve fresh greenery. The RHS says an outdoor moss wreath should be kept moist and can last several weeks. Iowa State University Extension says fresh-cut greenery in indoor wreaths and garlands typically lasts 7–10 days; warmth and dry indoor air shorten that display period. Those figures describe greenery, not a guaranteed lifespan for any particular berry.
- Hang fresh greenery outdoors or in the coolest suitable location.
- Inspect the wreath regularly and remove dried or loose material.
- Use any anti-desiccant only as directed on its label.
- Replace natural berry clusters with artificial picks if shedding becomes a safety or maintenance problem.
Shopping for reusable berry picks
If you are buying rather than gathering, compare berry size, stem length, finish, number of stems, wireability and the stated indoor/outdoor suitability. Artificial red berry picks or wired stems are the most direct substitute for holly or winterberry; florist wire and wire cutters are the main supporting tools. No particular product, price or performance ranking is established here, so select by the dimensions and exposure requirements of your wreath.
