Oaxaca’s most compelling design hotels are not a single type of sustainable stay. The seven properties featured by Architectural Digest on November 9, 2021 range from a rammed-earth retreat in the Xaaga Valley to restored colonial mansions in Oaxaca City and low-impact coastal compounds. Their environmental and sourcing practices are described by the feature or by the hotels themselves, but the list is a curated design selection rather than a common certification or audited ranking.

How to read this list
The seven hotels sit across very different landscapes. Four are in Oaxaca City, where adaptive reuse places contemporary hospitality inside sixteenth-, seventeenth- or nineteenth-century buildings. Three are on the coast or in the inland valleys, where new construction responds to heat, wind, palms, earth and stone. “Sustainable” therefore means something different at each address: one emphasizes zero-waste operations and artisan sourcing, another relies on passive cooling, and another describes recycling systems. The evidence is property-specific, not a standardized score.

- TRUSTED BY PROFESSIONAL PAINTERS AND CONTRACTORS NATIONWIDE — Pro Grade delivers professional-grade results at a price that makes sense for crews who go through brushes on every job. Ideal for property managers, remodeling contractors, apartment turnover crews, maintenance teams, and commercial painting operations. Backed by thousands of verified reviews from working painters. Washable and reusable for multiple projects.
The core selection comes from Architectural Digest’s November 9, 2021 feature. Current hotel pages reviewed on October 13, 2026 add context for a few properties and for newer hotels outside the original seven. Those self-descriptions are useful for planning, but they do not turn the 2021 feature into an independent environmental audit.

The seven hotels in detail
Casa Silencio: rammed earth in the Xaaga Valley
Casa Silencio is a six-key retreat associated with mezcal producer El Silencio. Its architecture layers tapia (rammed earth), stone, glass and reclaimed wood into a building that feels rooted in the dry valley rather than imported from an international resort template. A 53-foot communal table, carved from a single 17-ton basalt slab, makes the material story tangible: geology becomes the social center of the property.
The Architectural Digest feature attributes a zero-waste ethos to the retreat and says furnishings, textiles and décor come almost exclusively from multigenerational Oaxacan artisans. “Almost exclusively” matters: it describes the sourcing approach reported for the hotel, not a quantified procurement audit. Travelers who value craft provenance will find the clearest connection here between architecture, objects and regional makers.

Pug Seal Oaxaca City: a villa with layered influences
Pug Seal occupies a nineteenth-century villa in Oaxaca City. Rather than treating the historic shell as a museum piece, the design combines Zapotec-inspired references with Mediterranean details. Rooms are individually distinct, marble floors give the interiors a cool, durable base, and a courtyard mural by Rafael Uriegas supplies a focal point that changes the experience from room to room.

- Halloween Pumpkin Ceramic Crafts Supplies: A Great painting gift for family, friends, kids, girls, women, student, classmate, teacher. For using in school, travel or used in the home and office.
The feature presents Pug Seal primarily through its adaptive reuse and visual character; it does not attach a specific waste, energy or water-performance claim to the property. Choose it when a central city stay in a characterful historic building matters more to you than a hotel selected for a particular environmental system.
Monte Uzulu: a palm-and-soil retreat at San Agustinillo
At-te and Taller Lu’um designed Monte Uzulu as a coastal retreat built principally with soil, wood and dried palms. The thatched roofs and earthen palette respond directly to San Agustinillo’s climate and vegetation, giving the hotel a low-tech, tactile identity instead of a sealed, heavily air-conditioned resort feel.
The 2021 feature reports recycling systems and identifies 11 guest rooms. Those details make Monte Uzulu one of the list’s more explicit examples of an operational practice paired with regionally appropriate construction. Ask the property how its recycling program currently works, what materials are accepted and how waste is handled in the village before assuming the system remains unchanged.
Casona Sforza: brick arches designed for shade
Near Puerto Escondido, entrepreneur Ezequiel Ayarza Sforza commissioned architect Alberto Kalach of TAX Architects to create Casona Sforza. The 11-suite property is defined by asymmetric brick arches and locally sourced yellow brick, a form that reads as sculptural from a distance but is also intended to moderate the coastal sun.

The design claim reported by the feature is that the brick reflects sunlight and keeps interiors cool without air conditioning. That is a passive-design intention, not a published energy measurement. If cooling performance is decisive for your booking, ask about room ventilation, seasonal temperatures and any mechanical cooling used during the dates of your stay.
Hotel Sin Nombre: historic masonry under a glass dome
Architect João Boto Caeiro renovated Hotel Sin Nombre inside a seventeenth-century mansion in Oaxaca City. Stone floors and whitewashed walls retain the weight and texture of the old structure, while a glass-domed courtyard brings daylight into the center of the plan. A rooftop pool adds an urban outdoor space above the historic fabric.
The property’s appeal is the contrast between preservation and intervention: thick masonry and restrained finishes below, a transparent roof and contemporary hospitality functions within. The feature does not assign a specific sustainability system or certification to Hotel Sin Nombre, so evaluate it as an adaptive-reuse design stay rather than as a measured environmental leader.

Escondido Oaxaca combines a restored nineteenth-century family home with a contemporary concrete tower. The hotel’s official page identifies Alberto Kalach and Taller de Arquitectura X as architect and names the interior-design collaborators. The tower contains eight rooms, while the restored house preserves the scale and memory of the original property.

- Bates paint brushes can be used for both oil-based paints as well as latex stains and are ideal for home or commercial projects such as decks, fences or DIY painting jobs.
Interiors use green cement tile that references Oaxacan cantera, and custom furniture is made with Sabino wood. The hotel also says its restaurant uses Oaxacan ingredients and works with local producers. These are concrete examples of regional material and supply relationships, but they should not be read as a quantified carbon or waste claim. If food sourcing is important, ask which ingredients are seasonal and which producers are currently involved.
Grana B&B: a sixteenth-century courtyard with a living kitchen
Grana B&B occupies a restored sixteenth-century mansion in Oaxaca City. Its Spanish colonial courtyard and Cantera columns provide the organizing structure, while 15 rooms make it a more intimate historic-house option than a large resort.
Breakfasts are prepared by rotating local cooks, giving the morning meal a changing connection to Oaxaca’s culinary community. The feature emphasizes this local participation alongside the building’s restoration. It does not report a formal environmental certification or a quantified resource-saving program, so the strongest reason to choose Grana is the combination of heritage architecture and locally prepared food.

For an Oaxaca City base
- Choose Pug Seal for a nineteenth-century villa with individually distinct rooms, marble floors and art in the courtyard.
- Choose Hotel Sin Nombre if a seventeenth-century mansion, glass-domed courtyard and rooftop pool are the defining features you want.
- Choose Escondido Oaxaca for the clearest old-and-new contrast: a restored family home beside an eight-room concrete tower, with regional tile, Sabino furniture and a locally focused restaurant.
- Choose Grana B&B for a smaller historic mansion, Spanish courtyard details and breakfasts by rotating local cooks.
For a coastal or valley escape
- Choose Casa Silencio for a design retreat centered on rammed earth, basalt, reclaimed wood and reported artisan sourcing.
- Choose Monte Uzulu for thatched roofs, soil-and-palm construction and the feature’s reported recycling systems in San Agustinillo.
- Choose Casona Sforza for an architectural destination near Puerto Escondido where brick arches and passive solar thinking shape the suites.
For adaptive reuse versus new construction
The city hotels—Pug Seal, Hotel Sin Nombre, Escondido Oaxaca and Grana B&B—make the existing building the starting point. Reusing a villa or mansion preserves embodied material and keeps a stay tied to the city’s historic fabric, although the feature does not quantify energy or carbon savings for any property. Casa Silencio, Monte Uzulu and Casona Sforza are purpose-built retreats whose environmental story comes through material choice, climate response or operational practices described for each site.

Questions to ask before booking
- Confirm what is operating now. Request current rates, room availability, check-in conditions and cancellation terms directly from the property.
- Map the transfer. Oaxaca City, the Xaaga Valley, San Agustinillo and the Puerto Escondido area require different road and airport plans. Ask about transfer time, road conditions and whether the hotel can arrange transport.
- Check access before arrival. Historic mansions, split-level compounds, rooftop facilities and coastal sites may involve stairs, uneven floors or limited step-free routes. Ask for an accurate room and common-area description.
- Clarify environmental operations. Ask how recycling, water treatment, waste reduction, cooling, power generation and laundry are handled today. A design description is not the same as a current performance report.
- Ask about local sourcing. If artisan-made furnishings, regional food or local labor are central to your decision, ask which makers and producers are currently involved and whether practices vary by season.
More recent context beyond the original seven
Oaxaca’s design-hotel scene has continued to evolve, so the 2021 list is a snapshot rather than a complete directory. These properties are useful context, but they are not additional entries in the seven-hotel feature.
Casa TO, La Punta Zicatela
Casa TO’s official site describes a raw-concrete design by Ludwig Godefroy in La Punta Zicatela. Its forms are intended to blend into the surrounding landscape. The description is architectural and contextual; it does not establish a comparable environmental score against the seven hotels above.
Hotel Terrestre, Puerto Escondido
Design Hotels describes Hotel Terrestre with locally made brick, raw concrete, timber and open-air structures. Its listing emphasizes natural cross-ventilation, solar-powered villas and an off-grid concept. These are the property’s stated characteristics, not an independently verified comparison with Casa Silencio, Monte Uzulu or Casona Sforza.
Otro Oaxaca
The official Otro Oaxaca page describes reclaimed wood, regional materials, custom furniture and linens made by local artisans, and an architectural plan inspired by Mitla. Carlos Couturier, identified among the project’s “Originals” and as Grupo Habita’s interior-design lead, explains: “We use a local team every time we build a hotel, and we read the surroundings and their traditions to integrate the local culture into our project.” The statement captures a design philosophy; it is not a numerical sustainability claim.
Kymaia
Kymaia’s sustainability page reports that a wetland naturally treats and filters wastewater. It also describes native-plant conservation, reforestation, renewable energy, rainwater collection and community partnerships, alongside a stated goal of achieving sustainability certifications. Treat those as the hotel’s reported practices and future objective; the page does not independently verify a certification already held.
Making a responsible choice from a design-led list
Start with geography and building type, then examine the specific practice that matters most to you. A restored city mansion may reduce the need for new construction but offer no published resource metrics. A coastal retreat may use passive cooling or local materials while still requiring careful questions about water, waste and transport. The most defensible comparison is therefore qualitative: identify the hotel whose documented design and operating approach aligns with your priorities, then verify current conditions directly.
