Which Sherwin-Williams paint colors do designers use again and again? Seven shades stand out in documented kitchen projects: a cheerful pale blue, nuanced cream-gray neutrals, shifting sage, warm white, mushroom beige, moody green and true black. They are not a profession-wide ranking; they are real selections reported by designers for specific kitchens. Your daylight, flooring, counters and backsplash will change how every color reads, so sample finalists in place before painting.

What are the best Sherwin-Williams colors for kitchen cabinets?
Take Five: a light blue that adds cheer
Jenny Slingerland, owner and principal designer of Black Ink Interiors, used Take Five in a Flagstaff, Arizona, kitchen. She chose it to complement Schumacher wallpaper and brighten a kitchen that had felt dark, calling it “the perfect blue paint” for that combination. It suits rooms that need color and optimism without the heaviness of a deep navy.
Limewash: cream-gray rather than stark white
Shannon Adamson selected Limewash for cabinetry because it sits between cream and gray. The deeper-than-builder-white neutral creates a tailored, airy effect. She paired it with a Cornwall Slate island, using the tonal difference to draw attention to pale-green backsplash tile. Consider it when a pure white cabinet would look too cold or generic.

Austere Gray: a color that moves with daylight
Cara Shahbandi of Stanton Home Design used Austere Gray in a Florida kitchen. Warm morning light from the east-facing exposure made it appear brighter and sage-like; the north-facing sink window gave it a moodier gray-green quality. That shift is an asset if you want a living color, but it makes an in-room sample essential.
Tricorn Black SW 6258: crisp, graphic contrast
Lauren Lerner, CEO and founder of Living with Lolo, describes Tricorn Black as a classic true black. On cabinets or an accent wall, it creates a deliberate counterpoint to light countertops and backsplashes. Because black increases visual weight, check that the room has enough light and that adjoining finishes can carry the contrast.

Greek Villa: warm white with a gentle yellow cast
Jennifer Guerin of JG Color Studios used Greek Villa for warm white cabinetry. Its subtle yellow undertones keep the finish from feeling stark or icy, while still allowing it to work with a cooler backsplash and an existing countertop. Compare it directly with your trim and appliances; nearby whites can make its warmth more apparent.
Realist Beige: a light mushroom neutral
Lauren Utsch of Lauren Christopher Designs chose Realist Beige to bring a light mushroom tone, warmth and depth to an open plan with white walls. It coordinated with a white-oak island instead of disappearing into the background. This is a useful middle ground when white feels flat but a darker cabinet would dominate the connected living space.

Night Owl: moody green with restraint
Adamson also used Night Owl on cabinets. Its gray-and-green balance avoids reading as either army green or pale sage. In the project, the darker shade added weight beneath a vaulted ceiling and contrasted with light walls without becoming overpowering. It is suited to rooms that need a grounded focal point while retaining a muted character.
How to choose among the seven
Start with undertone and warmth
Group the choices by the effect you are after: Take Five supplies blue color; Limewash and Realist Beige are nuanced light neutrals; Greek Villa is a warm white; Austere Gray and Night Owl bring green; Tricorn Black is the deepest, most contrast-driven option. Hold each candidate beside your countertop, backsplash, flooring, hardware and trim rather than judging it on a color card alone.

Account for the room’s exposures
Daylight can move a paint from bright to muted, as Austere Gray demonstrates. East light is warmer in the morning, while north light is commonly cooler and moodier; artificial bulbs add another variable after sunset. Paint a large test area or use a peel-and-stick sample on more than one wall, then check it in morning, afternoon and evening light.
Match visual weight to the architecture
Pale shades keep a small or low-light kitchen visually open. Mid-tone neutrals provide definition without a hard edge. Night Owl and Tricorn Black can anchor tall rooms, islands or accent areas, but they need deliberate relationships with the ceiling, counters and adjacent rooms. A color that looks balanced in a showroom may feel heavy beside dark flooring.

Sampling is the step that prevents expensive surprises
- Obtain a physical sample. Sherwin-Williams offers color chips, paint samples and peel-and-stick samples; use a format large enough to judge undertone.
- Place it beside fixed materials. Test against the actual countertop, backsplash, floor, trim and wood tones, not isolated on a white sheet.
- Move it around the room. Check cabinet-facing walls, the island and areas near windows because reflected light changes perception.
- View it at multiple times. Record how the color looks in daylight and under the kitchen’s installed lighting before selecting a finish and quantity.
- Confirm the final sheen and preparation. Cabinet paint, primer, surface condition and sheen affect the result as much as the color name; follow the coating system recommended for your cabinet material.
How these picks relate to Sherwin-Williams’ current color programs
Sherwin-Williams describes its Top 50 as a collection of 50 most-popular colors and presents neutrals, earthy greens, blue-greens and saturated darks as enduring directions. That is a company-curated popularity signal, not a sales ranking for these seven shades. Tricorn Black is included as SW 6258.
The 2025 Color Capsule contains nine selected colors: Sunbleached SW 9585, White Snow SW 9541, Rain Cloud SW 9639, Clove SW 9605, Grounded SW 6089, Bosc Pear SW 6390, Chartreuse SW 0073, Malabar SW 9110 and Mauve Finery SW 6282. Those selections come from the Designer Color Collection and 2025 Colormix Forecast; inclusion in the capsule does not establish that any of the seven kitchen colors is more popular.

It is useful contemporary context, but it is not evidence that Universal Khaki belongs to the seven documented kitchen choices above.
