A 700-square-foot, three-room apartment in Milan shows how a compact home can feel both useful and deeply considered without relying on a single visual trick. Studio Falù reorganized the interior around full-height sliding doors, a Ceppo-inspired kitchen surface, pale wood and stone, and carefully chosen red accents. The result is not a measured space-saving formula or a universal floor plan; it is one documented response to two homeowners who wanted a home that was “minimal but textural, essential but refined, small but functional.”

The apartment was presented by Architectural Digest on November 27, 2023, in a feature by Ludovica Stevan with photography by Monica Di Chio. Its value as a case study lies in the way layout, material and furnishing decisions reinforce one another.
A specific Milan home, not a universal small-apartment template
The project is a classic 700-square-foot, three-room home in Milan for two geologists. The homeowners’ interest in natural materials informed the design, while Studio Falù translated their brief into an interior that feels restrained but not stark. That wording explains why the apartment cannot be reduced to a list of tricks for making every small home appear larger. The published feature gives the area and room count for this residence, but it does not provide a floor plan with dimensions, a before-and-after comparison, a survey or a measured study of space savings. The flexibility described below is therefore a design intention and an observed arrangement in this one apartment, not a quantified performance claim.
Full-height sliding doors make the rooms changeable
Open when the home needs continuity
The strongest practical move in the project is the use of full-height sliding doors. They define rooms while allowing those rooms to open to one another or close off according to use. When panels are moved aside, the apartment can read as a more continuous sequence of spaces; when they are drawn across, individual rooms regain separation.
The feature compares the spatial reference to Japanese fusuma, the sliding panels traditionally used to divide rooms. Here, the reference is interpreted through a contemporary Milanese renovation rather than copied as a historical detail. The doors act as architecture: they establish boundaries, control visual connection and let the residents decide how much separation a particular activity requires.

A closed panel can support a quieter bedroom, a more private work or rest area, or a visual break between everyday activities. The design does not claim that every room is permanently multifunctional; instead, the doors provide a way to alter the relationship between rooms without rebuilding walls.
Because the source does not publish door widths, track details, opening clearances or a measured comparison with hinged doors, those technical results should not be inferred. What is documented is the operating principle: the rooms can be opened or closed depending on use.
Ceppo is the material anchor, with an important distinction
The gray Milanese reference
Ceppo, a gray stone associated with Milan, gives the interior its visual and tactile center. It connects the apartment to its city while suiting the homeowners’ interest in geological materials. The stone’s irregular aggregate character supports the project’s aim of being textural without becoming visually busy.

The kitchen is made from a modified aggregate material
The kitchen worktop and backsplash are not described as a polished slab of natural Ceppo. Studio Falù used a modified, homogeneous mixture made from Ceppo di Grè aggregates, formed into blocks. The feature explains that the stone itself cannot be polished or sculpted, which is why this engineered approach was used.

This distinction matters. The surface borrows Ceppo’s appearance and aggregate identity, but its fabrication is different from cutting and polishing a conventional natural-stone slab. Calling it simply “Ceppo countertop” would erase the manufacturing decision that makes the installation possible.
Stone, wood and red accents establish balance
Wood appears in finishes and furnishings, softening the gray mineral presence. Neutral colors and clean volumes keep the background calm, while red on the large dining table and kitchen bench supplies a deliberate counterpoint. The red is not scattered across every surface; it is concentrated in a few substantial pieces so that the apartment retains a quiet overall tone.
The palette demonstrates a visual balancing act rather than a claim that red or gray will make a room seem larger. The documented effect is compositional: pale stone and wood provide a restrained field, and the red elements give the eye clear points of emphasis.
Three design languages meet without becoming a theme set
Nordic restraint
The interior has a mainly Nordic sensibility in its neutral colors, bright rooms, functional spaces and uncluttered volumes. Furniture is allowed to read clearly, and surfaces are not overloaded with decoration. This restraint gives the stronger material moments—especially the aggregate kitchen and red furnishings—room to register.

The Japanese influence is most legible in the sliding-door layout. The fusuma reference is about changing degrees of connection between rooms, not about applying a decorative Japanese motif to every object. The result is a plan that can alternate between openness and enclosure while maintaining a simple visual language.

Italian craft and Milanese identity
Italian craftsmanship and the local reference of Ceppo keep the apartment rooted in Milan. Studio Falù designer Silvia Marlia describes the intention directly: “Our goal was to unite as much as possible this style with Italian craftsmanship,”. The combination allows Nordic calm and Japanese adaptability to coexist with Italian material culture and furniture design.
How the rooms are furnished
Living area
The living area includes a Zanotta Max Bill side table and a Richard Sapper Tizio lamp for Artemide. The same Max Bill table is also used as a bedroom nightstand, showing how a compact home can give one recognizable object more than one setting without making the rooms feel identical.
The Tizio lamp introduces a precise, engineered silhouette against the softer reading of wood and stone. Its presence is part of the apartment’s refined design-object layer, while the surrounding neutral surfaces keep the composition from becoming a showroom of unrelated icons.

Kitchen and dining zone
The kitchen and dining scene brings together the modified Ceppo di Grè aggregate worktop and backsplash, the red kitchen bench, and a large red dining table. The feature identifies the dining table as a Fantin Frame table, the chairs as Zilio Candid chairs and the hanging light as a Hay PC Linear lamp.
These pieces give the central shared area a clear hierarchy. The worktop and backsplash carry the mineral texture; the table and bench provide the strongest color; the chairs and linear pendant keep the dining setting functional rather than ornamental. No published measurements establish how many people the table seats or how much circulation space surrounds it, so those dimensions should not be assumed.
Bedroom
The bedroom includes the Max Bill side table as a nightstand and a Joe Colombo Spider lamp for Oluce. Reusing the side table links the bedroom to the living area, while the Spider lamp adds another named design object with a distinct profile.

The room remains part of the same material story rather than becoming a separate style. Wood finishes, neutral tones and the controlled geometry continue through the private space, with the sliding-door strategy available to determine how connected the bedroom feels to the rest of the apartment.
Bench and custom elements
The feature also notes Fantin’s Panck bench and says that some furnishings were custom made. Those are two different categories. A named manufactured object should not be presented as custom, and a custom element should not be assigned a retail model name simply because it sits beside branded pieces.

What the apartment’s choices accomplish together
They separate function from permanence
Walls establish fixed divisions; sliding panels make divisions adjustable. That distinction lets the apartment retain recognizable rooms while changing how those rooms relate to one another. It is the clearest way the project addresses the brief’s “small but functional” requirement.
They make material texture carry visual interest
Instead of filling the home with many colors or decorative patterns, the design relies on the aggregate character of the Ceppo-inspired surface, the grain and warmth of wood, and the geometry of furniture and lighting. Texture supplies depth while the palette remains controlled.
They use accents sparingly but decisively
The red dining table and kitchen bench are large enough to anchor the shared space, yet they are limited enough to remain accents. Against pale stone and wood, the color provides orientation: the eye can identify the social center of the apartment without a heavy decorative scheme.
How to read this case without overgeneralizing it
This apartment can inform a design conversation, but it does not prove that sliding doors always outperform hinged doors, that aggregate surfaces reduce costs, or that a Nordic-Japanese-Italian mix improves measurable use of space. The source offers no tests, surveys, floor-plan metrics or comparative alternatives.

Any fabricator considering a similar surface would need separate technical information about composition, sealing, tolerances, maintenance and suitability for a particular installation; those specifications are not supplied in the home-tour feature.
