How is Indian Independence Day celebrated?
The national Red Fort ceremony is distinct from local observances held across India and by Indian communities abroad. In her address on the eve of Independence Day, President Droupadi Murmu described flag-hoisting ceremonies, patriotic songs, distribution of sweets and cultural events for children. These practices make the day visible in schools, neighbourhoods and community gatherings as well as at the national ceremony.
The Ministry of Defence says that, in the national capital, government landmarks are decorated and roads display the National Flag for the annual observance. Local programmes vary; the Red Fort sequence is the ministry’s account of the central ceremony, not a description of every celebration.

What does the day commemorate?
Independence Day recalls the freedom movement that brought independence in 1947. In her 2024 address, President Murmu emphasized that the struggle involved people from across the country and communities, naming figures including Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel, Subhas Chandra Bose, B. R. Ambedkar, Bhagat Singh and Chandrashekhar Azad. She also drew attention to tribal freedom fighters including Tilka Manjhi, Birsa Munda, Laxman Naik and Phulo-Jhano. Her address offers a selection of participants, rather than a complete history of the movement.
The address also connected the celebration with remembrance of Partition. August 14 was observed as Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas, or Partition Remembrance Day, recalling the forced migration and loss of life associated with Partition.
