Shipping-container rentals on Airbnb range from compact one-bedroom guesthouses to a four-bedroom, three-bath stacked home. The eight stays profiled by Architectural Digest on February 13, 2023 covered New Mexico, Texas, California, Arizona, Utah and Virginia, with displayed nightly prices of $116 to $350 at the time. Those figures are historical snapshots, not quotes for your dates: Airbnb recalculates the nightly rate, cleaning fee, service fee, taxes and any minimum-stay requirement when you search.
The right choice depends less on the container itself than on the setting, privacy, sleeping arrangement and outdoor space. Use the comparison below to narrow the field, then verify the live listing for availability, access details and the complete trip total.

Perfect for walls, trim, cabinets, doors, furniture, and detailed cutting-in work on any project.

How to compare a container home before booking
Match the layout to your group
“Shipping-container home” describes a construction method, not a standard floor plan. A single-container guesthouse can suit a couple who values a private base, while joined or stacked containers provide separate bedrooms and more living area for families. Check whether bedrooms are on one level, whether a loft or staircase is involved, and whether the listing describes a sofa bed or other additional sleeping space. The Forest property, for example, puts two bedrooms upstairs, a detail that matters to guests avoiding stairs.
Separate private amenities from shared ones
A private deck, patio, soaking tub or fire pit gives you outdoor space without relying on other guests. Pool and gym access can be a bonus, but read whether those facilities are shared with the host or other units. Phoenix explicitly places its pool, outdoor gym and fire pit in a backyard setting shared with the hosts. The Twentynine Palms suite lists an outdoor gym and bar along with access to a pool, fire tables and hammocks; that is a different privacy proposition from a stand-alone rural home.

Some stays are designed as a base for a named attraction or town, while others emphasize isolation and views. Glendale is positioned for Zion and Bryce Canyon, whereas the El Prado and Teasdale homes make their open-land and sandstone-mountain settings central to the experience. Confirm driving times, road surfaces, cellular coverage and check-in instructions rather than assuming a scenic location is close to the activity you want.

Architectural Digest’s displayed rates date from 2023. On Airbnb, enter your dates and guest count, open the full price breakdown and review the cancellation policy before paying. Amenities, photographs, occupancy limits and host rules can change. Ask the host about accessibility, parking, heating and cooling, water pressure, outdoor-amenity hours and whether nearby construction or seasonal conditions affect the stay.
El Prado, New Mexico: Steel Pueblo for open-land views
What the design offers
Steel Pueblo is a one-bedroom home near Taos, surrounded by open land. A glass-enclosed porch extends the living area while floor-to-ceiling bedroom windows make the landscape part of the room. The combination is well suited to a couple who wants a quiet retreat and substantial views without giving up an indoor sitting area.
Best fit and practical questions
Choose this listing when seclusion and visual connection to the high-desert setting matter more than multiple bedrooms. Before booking, confirm how the hot tub is situated, whether it is private, and what access is like in winter or during wet weather. Large windows can also mean greater sun exposure and temperature swings, so check the listing’s heating, cooling and shade information.
Marfa, Texas: Hermosa keeps the container character visible
What makes it distinctive
Hermosa Container Home: 1st Floor is a one-bedroom, 1.5-bath unit with a deck and hillside views. Its exterior retains visible container character, including Chinese characters on the steel, rather than disguising the original modules behind conventional siding. That material history is part of the appeal for travelers interested in adaptive reuse and Marfa’s art-oriented atmosphere.

Best fit and practical questions
The deck creates an outdoor perch, while the half bath can make a difference when two people are getting ready. Confirm exactly what “1st Floor” means for entry, parking and any other units above or nearby. Hillside sites can involve slopes or uneven paths; ask about the route from the parking area if mobility or heavy luggage is a concern.
Twentynine Palms, California: Desert Skybox puts a suite in the air
What makes it distinctive
Desert Skybox is a two-bedroom suite built in a 45-foot container and suspended above the ground. Two balconies extend the usable area. The property adds a hot tub, outdoor gym and bar, with shared access to a pool, fire tables and hammocks. It is the most amenity-rich choice in the group for guests who want a resort-like outdoor setup in a desert environment.
Best fit and practical questions
The elevated construction delivers a dramatic experience but may not suit anyone uncomfortable with stairs, exposed edges or movement between indoor and outdoor levels. Ask about the exact route to the suite, balcony railings, hot-tub hours and whether the pool and fire areas are shared. Desert nights can be cold even after hot days, so verify the heating and cooling systems and what is supplied for outdoor use.

Best fit and practical questions
It works for a couple or solo traveler who wants a compact private interior and access to recreation without booking a large house. Because the outdoor facilities are shared, establish quiet hours, pool availability and the expected level of host interaction. Phoenix heat makes air-conditioning capacity, window coverings and parking shade worth confirming before arrival.
Teasdale, Utah: a two-container retreat with room to spread out
What makes it distinctive
The Lavish Shipping Container Retreat joins two containers into a two-bedroom, two-bath home. About 1,000 square feet of decking surrounds the residence, and the listing includes a soaking tub, work areas in the bedrooms and views toward sandstone mountains. The generous deck is a major differentiator for travelers who plan to spend as much time outside as inside.
Best fit and practical questions
Dedicated work areas make this one practical for a longer stay or a trip combining remote work with outdoor activities. Ask whether the work surfaces have task lighting and reliable internet, and confirm which deck areas are covered or exposed. Mountain locations can have changing weather and limited nearby services, so plan groceries, fuel and route timing in advance.

Best fit and practical questions
This is a strong option for guests who like a social property but still want a defined outdoor area for their unit. Six units mean the overall atmosphere can be livelier than an isolated home, especially on weekends or during local events. Check the exact sleeping configuration for your party, sound expectations, fire-pit rules and the distance to restaurants and supplies in the Round Top area.
Glendale, Utah: Envase Casa for larger groups near two parks
What makes it distinctive
Envase Casa stacks two containers vertically and expands them into a four-bedroom, three-bath house. It includes a carport, fire pit, decks and patio. The primary suite adds a soaking tub and rainforest shower. Its location near Zion and Bryce makes it the clearest choice in this group for a larger party planning national-park days while keeping a substantial home base.
Best fit and practical questions
Four bedrooms and three bathrooms reduce morning bottlenecks for families or several couples, but the vertical design means stairs are part of daily circulation. Confirm bedroom locations, stair dimensions and whether the carport accommodates your vehicle. Park visits require timed-entry or shuttle planning in some seasons; verify current park rules separately and allow more driving time than a map’s straight-line distance suggests.

What makes it distinctive
The Forest Shipping Container House uses two containers in a vertical design near Lynchburg. It sleeps up to six across two upstairs bedrooms, with a first-floor deck and a patio attached to the primary suite. The split between bedrooms and outdoor areas gives a group more than one place to gather or retreat.
Best fit and practical questions
It suits families or friends visiting the Lynchburg area who want a complete house rather than a single-room container. Because the bedrooms are upstairs, confirm stair access and child-safety arrangements if needed. Ask how many vehicles can park on site, whether the deck is covered, and which outdoor spaces are private to your reservation.
Booking checklist for any container-home stay
- Search the exact dates. Enter destination, dates and total guests on Airbnb; do not rely on a headline rate from an older article.
- Check the sleeping plan. Match every guest to a named bedroom or documented bed, and verify stairs, lofts and sofa beds.
- Audit privacy. Identify shared pools, gyms, fire areas, driveways and outdoor seating. “Private home” does not automatically mean every amenity is private.
- Open the price breakdown. Review nightly charges, cleaning and service fees, taxes, deposits, minimum stays and the cancellation deadline before confirming.
- Verify access and utilities. Ask about road conditions, parking, entry steps, internet, heating, air-conditioning and hot-tub or pool operating hours.
- Plan around the setting. Download directions if service may be weak, stock food when the property is remote, and check seasonal weather or attraction rules.
- Message the host with unresolved questions. Keep the answers in the Airbnb message thread so expectations about privacy, occupancy and amenities are documented.
Container inventory is broader than this 2023 roundup. More recent Airbnb search results have included listings in Indianapolis, Buda, Fredericksburg, Bella Vista and Santa Rosa; an Indianapolis property called “The Sycamore” was reported at 4.99 from 96 reviews when crawled and was made from seven containers. Treat ratings, review counts and availability as live data that can change, and use the same verification steps for any newer listing.
Architectural Digest author Kristine Hansen described these rentals as “more elaborate and spacious than a tiny home where everything has its (cramped) place,” noting that combining multiple containers can let guests spread out. That distinction explains why the eight homes feel so different: the container shell is a common starting point, while the number of modules, site design and outdoor amenities determine the actual vacation experience.
