- Parametric CAD: Dimension-driven parts, constraints, assemblies, editable design history, and manufacturing exports.
- Direct CAD: Push-pull and face-based editing with less emphasis on a traditional feature tree.
- Polygon modeling: Vertex, edge, and face editing for game assets, animation, and hard-surface meshes.
- Digital sculpting: Brush-based manipulation of dense meshes for characters, creatures, miniatures, and organic forms.
- Architectural modeling: Buildings, rooms, terrain, materials, interiors, and spatial presentations.
- 3D-print preparation: Checking scale, wall thickness, watertightness, normals, tolerances, and export quality.
An app can be excellent in one category and unsuitable in another. Nomad Sculpt is a better choice for a creature than SketchUp; Shapr3D is a better choice for a dimensionally accurate bracket than ZBrush.
1. Shapr3D — best overall for serious iPad CAD
Best for: Product design, engineering concepts, woodworking, mechanical parts, and dimensionally controlled 3D printing.
Shapr3D is the strongest overall recommendation when “overall” means iPad-native CAD. How to choose the right iPad modeling app
For 3D printing
Choose Shapr3D for dimensionally precise parts. Choose Nomad Sculpt for organic models such as figurines and creatures. In either case, inspect the exported file for watertightness, inverted normals, non-manifold edges, self-intersections, thin walls, correct scale, and unsupported overhangs. STL export alone does not prove that a model is printable.

For character and creature work
Choose ZBrush for iPad if you already use ZBrush or need its professional ecosystem. Choose Nomad Sculpt for a lower-cost entry point. Forger is an alternative worth considering after checking its current support and export workflow.
For architecture and interiors
Choose SketchUp for iPad if you want the SketchUp ecosystem, spatial modeling, and construction-oriented workflows. Choose uMake when sketch-driven NURBS modeling, presentation, or Apple Pencil interaction is more important.
For beginners
Nomad Sculpt is the clearest entry point for organic modeling. uMake is a good starting point for sketch-based design, while SketchUp can be easier for users who already think in floor plans and rooms.
For desktop handoff
Use Shapr3D or Onshape for CAD workflows, but understand the difference between their exchange models. STEP and IGES are generally more appropriate for CAD interchange than STL. For sculpting, expect desktop work for retopology, UVs, rigging, animation, rendering, or advanced cleanup.
Recommended Free Tools
File formats that matter
- STEP and IGES: CAD interchange formats better suited to engineering geometry and editable surfaces.
- STL: Common for 3D printing, but it contains triangles rather than native parametric design history.
- 3MF: Often preferable to STL for modern print workflows because it can preserve additional manufacturing information.
- OBJ: Common for mesh interchange, materials, and texture workflows.
- FBX, USD, and USDZ: Useful for animation, games, AR, and Apple-centric visualization.
- DWG and DXF: Important in architectural and technical drawing workflows.
- SKP: Important for SketchUp interoperability.
Shapr3D officially lists support for STEP, IGES, STL, OBJ, 3MF, DXF, DWG, and related formats. uMake’s listing identifies STEP, IGES, OBJ, STL, USDZ, and SKP compatibility. Always confirm whether a format is supported for import, export, or both, and whether it is limited to a paid plan.
Offline use, cloud dependence, and subscriptions
Offline support is not a simple yes-or-no label. An app may allow local modeling but require an internet connection for account validation, cloud synchronization, rendering, asset libraries, exports, or collaboration.
Shapr3D advertises offline access with cloud sync. Onshape should be treated as cloud-dependent unless current documentation says otherwise. For SketchUp, ZBrush for iPad, Nomad Sculpt, Forger, and Sculptura, confirm the latest documentation for the exact operations you need.
Also distinguish a free download from genuinely usable free modeling. Shapr3D has a Basic tier; ZBrush for iPad has a restricted free version; SketchUp offers free viewing and a trial; other apps may use one-time, monthly, or annual purchases. App Store prices vary by country, taxes, currency, billing channel, and account type. Annual plans are often billed upfront, and trials may auto-renew.
Is an iPad Pro powerful enough?
Current iPad Pro models are appropriate for demanding iPad-native modeling, but performance depends on mesh density, texture resolution, scene complexity, app optimization, storage, and available memory. No iPad Pro is a universal replacement for a desktop workstation.
Large CAD assemblies, heavy sculpt meshes, complex render scenes, desktop-only plugins, simulation, CAM, rigging, animation, and batch processing may still require a Mac or Windows machine. The iPad also has no active cooling, so long heavy sessions can affect battery life and sustained performance.
Storage matters for large projects, texture libraries, scans, and offline work. Apple Pencil support is a major advantage for sculpting and sketching, but technical CAD may still feel better with a keyboard, mouse, or trackpad.
