Adobe Muse widgets can still be useful when you are maintaining an existing Muse website—but Muse is no longer a supported platform. Adobe ended feature development on March 26, 2018, and technical support on March 26, 2020. Existing sites may continue to run for eligible Creative Cloud subscribers, but Muse no longer receives operating-system compatibility updates or bug fixes. Read Adobe’s end-of-service notice before relying on any legacy widget.
The eight widgets below are a practical editorial shortlist for existing websites, especially portfolios, painting businesses, contractors, photographers, and other small companies. Back up your .muse project and test every download in a duplicate file before installing it. Availability and download terms can change.
What “free” means here
Free Adobe Muse widgets are not necessarily free forever, unsupported, or available without registration. In this guide, “free” may mean:
- Free download: no payment is required at download.
- Free account required: the file is free, but registration is needed.
- Free with subscription: access is included in a membership rather than offered as an unrestricted standalone download.
- Free version with paid upgrade: basic functionality is available at no charge, while advanced features or support cost extra.
- Previously free or availability uncertain: a listing exists, but current download terms or maintenance cannot be confirmed.
The eight widgets listed here appear in the MuseThemes free widget collection. MuseThemes indicates that a basic account is required for downloads. Check each provider’s page before downloading, and use only official sources rather than unverified file mirrors.

1. Tooltips
Best for: unfamiliar icons, technical terms, product details, and small interface hints.
Tooltips are useful when a painting portfolio includes unfamiliar symbols, finish names, surface-preparation terms, or small controls. They can add context without taking permanent space on the page.
Keep the information supplementary. A tooltip should not be the only place visitors can find a price, instruction, form requirement, or error message. Hover-only behavior is especially problematic for touchscreens and keyboard users, so check whether the widget also responds to focus or click. On a phone, verify that the popup stays within the viewport rather than running off the edge.
Installation summary: Download the provider’s package, install it through Muse’s Widgets Library panel, drag it onto the page, and configure its trigger and appearance options. The exact controls vary by creator.
Verdict: A strong everyday utility when it clarifies a complex interface, but visible labels are safer for essential content.
2. Back To Top Button
Best for: long landing pages, portfolios, documentation-style pages, and single-page business websites.
A Back To Top Button is one of the least complicated ways to improve navigation on a long page. It can help visitors return to a page header after browsing project galleries, service descriptions, or a long painting case study.
Configure it to appear only after the visitor has scrolled a meaningful distance. Give it a clear label or accessible name, maintain visible contrast, and test its position on narrow screens. A fixed button should not cover cookie notices, chat controls, mobile navigation, or important form buttons.
If the widget supports keyboard interaction, check where focus goes after activation. Also test it in the exported site, not only in Muse’s preview.
Verdict: Probably the safest choice in this list: practical, visually simple, and useful on many legacy sites.
3. Scroll Reveal
Best for: introducing portfolio cards, images, service sections, or testimonials as the visitor scrolls.

Scroll Reveal can give a painting website a more deliberate visual rhythm—for example, revealing a “surface preparation,” “color matching,” and “final coat” sequence as a visitor moves down the page. Used sparingly, it supports hierarchy without requiring custom animation code.
Do not animate every element. Important information should be visible if the animation script fails, and the effect should not delay access to contact details, prices, navigation, or form controls. Test with motion-reduction settings where possible and avoid fast, repeated, or disorienting movement.
Check whether the widget leaves content visible when JavaScript is unavailable or an external script fails. Excessive animation also increases the perceived loading time of an already image-heavy portfolio.
Verdict: Useful for presentation-led pages, but less essential than reliable navigation, forms, and analytics.

4. Google Analytics widget
Best for: legacy site owners who need to measure visits, traffic sources, or popular pages.
A Muse analytics widget may insert tracking code or accept a tracking ID. It does not automatically provide a complete, current analytics setup, and installing it does not by itself make a website privacy-compliant.
Before using it, confirm which analytics property or measurement system it supports. Analytics products and tag formats change, while Muse no longer receives updates. Determine whether the widget can delay tracking until the visitor gives the consent required in your jurisdiction and whether its instructions still match the current service.
For a painting business, useful measurements might include visits to exterior-painting pages, quote-form completions, and traffic to project galleries. Avoid collecting more personal information than necessary.

5. Form – Photo Fields
Best for: contact forms, quote requests, and visually branded lead forms.
This widget can make a basic form more distinctive by placing fields against an image or photographic treatment. A painting company might use a subtle wall texture or project photo behind a consultation form—but the design must not compromise readability.

Every field needs an obvious label; placeholder text alone is not an adequate substitute. Check text and field contrast, keyboard focus, validation messages, success messages, spam controls, and the privacy information shown near the form.
A form that looks functional in Muse preview may still fail in production because of hosting, email, endpoint, or server configuration problems. After publishing, submit a real test form from desktop and mobile and confirm that the message reaches the intended mailbox.
Verdict: A useful visual enhancement, not a replacement for testing delivery, validation, accessibility, and privacy.
6. Before & After Image Slider
Best for: renovations, restoration, color changes, retouching, landscaping, cosmetic work, and design portfolios.
This is the most purpose-driven widget for showing a transformation. A painting contractor can compare a damaged exterior with the finished surface; a decorator can show a room before and after a color change; a restoration business can demonstrate repaired detail.
Use two well-matched, compressed images with the same crop and viewpoint. Add nearby text or captions explaining what visitors should notice. Test dragging with a mouse, touch, and keyboard. A drag-only comparison can exclude visitors who cannot operate the control, so provide a nearby two-image alternative or a meaningful textual description when necessary.
Check the initial slider position, loading behavior, captions, and mobile touch target. Do not let the divider conceal the most important part of either image.
Verdict: Excellent when the work genuinely depends on comparison; unnecessary decoration when two clearly labeled images communicate the result better.
7. Shadow Slide
Best for: portfolios, case studies, and captioned sequences of project images.
Shadow Slide can present a series of images with captions and a more stylized visual treatment. It may suit a portfolio showing preparation, priming, application, and completed work.
Captions must remain readable against both light and dark images, and they should not disappear so quickly that visitors cannot finish reading them. Important project details—materials, location, scope, and results—should also exist as ordinary page text rather than being available only inside an automatically advancing slideshow.

Optimize images before adding them, make controls visible, and test more than one slideshow on the same page. Multiple instances can expose conflicts in old JavaScript libraries or page-level scripts.
For a simple gallery, Adobe’s native Thumbnails Slideshow may be sufficient and can reduce dependency on a third-party library. Adobe documents native components such as the Thumbnails Slideshow, Tabbed Panel, Accordion, and Simple Contact Form.

8. Videos – Fullscreen Backgrounds
Best for: decorative hero sections and visual introductions to a portfolio or campaign page.
A fullscreen background video can create a striking first impression: paint being applied, a room changing color, or a time-lapse of a completed project. It is also the riskiest widget here.
Treat the video as decoration, not as the sole source of meaning. Use muted autoplay only when appropriate, supply a static poster image, and provide a pause mechanism if motion persists or distracts. Compress the video aggressively and test mobile data usage, slower connections, and smaller devices. A static image is often the better choice for a local-service business whose priority is fast access to a phone number or quote form.

External media can introduce privacy, availability, and mixed-content problems.
Verdict: The most visually impressive option, but also the highest-maintenance and highest-performance-risk choice.
How to install a Muse widget safely
Third-party packages use different file types and installation instructions, so follow the creator’s documentation rather than guessing where files belong. The general workflow is:
- Back up the original
.musefile and duplicate the project for testing. - Download the package from the creator’s official page.
- Unzip it if necessary and inspect the included instructions.
- Open Adobe Muse and the Widgets Library panel.
- Import or install the supplied library or widget as directed by the provider.
- Drag the widget onto the page and configure its control panel.
- Preview the page in Muse, then export or publish a test copy.
- Test every breakpoint, browser, interaction, form, and external integration before updating the live site.
Muse for You describes the basic process as downloading, unzipping and installing the widget, then dragging it from Muse’s widgets panel onto the page. Its exact process may not apply to every provider.

- Test desktop, tablet, and phone breakpoints.
- Check Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge where practical.
- Navigate with a keyboard and confirm visible focus.
- Test touch controls, sliders, menus, and tap targets.
- Increase text size and zoom the page.
- Test on a slower connection, especially with galleries or video.
- Confirm that content remains usable if an animation or external script fails.
- Check form validation, spam protection, delivery, and confirmation messages.
- Review analytics loading, cookie consent, and privacy notices.
- Test the exported or published site—not just Muse Design mode.
Common failures and recovery steps
The widget downloads but does not appear
Possible causes include an incomplete unzip, corrupted download, unsupported file type, incorrect installation location, a required Muse restart, or a skipped provider-specific step. Re-download the official package, read its instructions, restart Muse, and reinstall it in the duplicate project. Do not rely on an unofficial mirror simply because the original page has disappeared.

It works in Muse but fails after export
Inspect the exported files and browser console if you are comfortable doing so. Missing JavaScript, incorrect relative paths, HTTPS or mixed-content issues, changed external APIs, conflicts with another widget, and browser changes can all affect an old site. Adobe states that it no longer fixes bugs arising when Muse sites are published after support ended.
It works at one breakpoint but not another
Check the widget’s resize policy, minimum and maximum dimensions, fixed heights, breakpoint-specific overrides, and any provider-stated version requirements. “Responsive” in a provider listing is not a guarantee that the widget will behave correctly in every Muse layout or modern device.
An external service stops working
Analytics, social feeds, maps, video hosts, comment systems, and ecommerce embeds depend on services outside Muse. Their APIs, embed methods, authentication, and privacy requirements can change independently. Replace the integration, remove it, or provide a static fallback rather than leaving a broken component on the page.

Adobe ended Business Catalyst hosting. Adobe says Muse sites hosted on third-party platforms can remain live, but sites hosted through Business Catalyst had to be republished elsewhere. Confirm your hosting, DNS, SSL certificate, forms, and email delivery before making changes.
Native Muse widgets to try first
Not every feature needs a third-party download. Adobe’s built-in components include the Simple Contact Form, Thumbnails Slideshow, Tabbed Panel, and Accordion, along with ordinary hyperlinking and HTML embedding. For a basic site, native functionality is often easier to troubleshoot and creates one fewer unsupported dependency.
Use native Muse functionality when it meets the requirement. Choose a third-party widget when it provides a meaningful capability or presentation improvement. Use custom embedded HTML only when the external service is maintained and you understand its security, privacy, and maintenance implications.
Adobe’s MuCow documentation describes MuCow as a format for configurable HTML embed widgets. MuCow is different from Muse’s standard widgets, such as slideshows and accordions; it is not a general guarantee that an external HTML service will remain compatible.
Where to find additional legacy resources
MuseFree lists additional categories such as contact forms, tabbed boxes, menus, hover effects, and other snippets. Treat it as a directory of possible resources, not proof that every item is actively maintained or suitable for a current browser.
Muse for You offers individual widgets and membership access. Its catalog has used labels such as “Free with subscription,” so do not treat membership-gated access as an unrestricted free download. The provider’s historical catalog also showed individual prices and an advertised annual access price, but prices and availability should be checked directly before purchase.
Should you start a new website in Muse?
For most new websites, no. Muse may remain serviceable for maintaining a particular legacy project, but its unsupported status creates increasing risk as operating systems, browsers, hosting environments, security expectations, and third-party services change.
Adobe’s transition guidance points users toward different tools for different needs: Adobe Portfolio for portfolio-oriented sites, Adobe Express for simple one-page pages, and Adobe XD for design and prototyping. These are not one-for-one replacements for Muse’s complete visual publishing workflow. A new production website that needs current forms, ecommerce, integrations, security updates, or ongoing support is generally better served by a currently supported website builder or CMS, or by a professional migration.
