An 8×10-foot laundry room gives you 80 square feet to organize washing, drying, soaking, folding, sorting, and linen storage. A published 8×10 plan fits side-by-side machines, a sink zone, counters, hampers, and a linen cabinet, but its dimensions are an example rather than a universal template. The room’s doorway, plumbing, vent, appliance models, and door swings determine what will work in your house.
Use the example as a planning reference: it allocates a 30-inch-wide by 24-inch-deep sink zone, a 42-inch folding counter, and a 45-inch center aisle. Measure your actual room and follow each appliance’s installation guide before ordering cabinets or setting counter depths.

What an 8×10 laundry room can realistically hold
The footprint is large enough for a complete laundry workflow when each activity has a defined zone. The strongest arrangement in the available published example places a washer and dryer side by side along one wall, then adds a sink, folding counter, sorting counter, hampers, and a linen cabinet within the room. That combination works because the plan treats circulation as a design requirement instead of filling every wall with cabinetry.
The example’s 30-by-24-inch sink allocation, 42-inch folding-counter allocation, and 45-inch center aisle should be read as one demonstrated solution. They are not required fixture standards, and they may not fit when a doorway is centered differently, a vent must cross a wall, or the selected machines are deeper than expected.

Think of the room as a sequence: bring dirty clothes in, sort them, load the machines, soak or pretreat at the sink, transfer loads, fold on a clear surface, and put finished linens away. A layout that shortens those movements can feel more spacious than one with the same floor area but poorly placed doors and cabinets.
Measure the room before choosing a layout
Take measurements with the room empty, then mark the information on a scaled sketch. Record finished wall-to-wall dimensions rather than relying on the nominal 8×10 description.
- Measure the doorway, frame, threshold, and the direction in which the door swings. Note whether furniture or a tall cabinet would narrow the entry.
- Locate the washer supply lines, drain, electrical receptacles, gas connection if applicable, and dryer vent. Mark their heights and how far they project from the wall.
- Measure windows, soffits, bulkheads, floor drains, clean-outs, and any heating or cooling equipment that limits cabinet placement.
- Measure the path from the exterior doorway to the appliance location. A machine that fits on paper still has to pass through the home during delivery or replacement.
- Write down the exact width, height, depth, and door-swing requirements for every appliance you are considering. Use the manufacturer’s installation guide, not a retailer’s rounded listing.
Draw the appliance doors open on your plan. Front-load doors need room in front for loading and unloading; a door that opens toward a sink or hamper can turn a workable aisle into a bottleneck. If you are considering top-load machines, draw the lid’s raised position and verify that a shelf or upper cabinet will not block it.
Layout option: side-by-side machines with a worktop
Side-by-side front-load machines are the most direct interpretation of the published 8×10 example. They keep both controls at a similar height and create the possibility of a continuous countertop above the pair. The counter can serve as a folding surface, a place to set a basket, or a temporary landing zone when transferring a load.
Where this arrangement works best
- Choose it when you want a broad, uninterrupted folding area and easy access to both machines.
- Place the sink close enough to the machines for pretreating and transferring wet items, but not where an open appliance door blocks the basin.
- Use a separate sorting counter or open section beside the machines if several household members sort clothes at once.
- Keep tall linen storage at an end of the run or on an adjacent wall so it does not interrupt the counter or the entry route.
A counter over front-load appliances must be supported and finished around the selected models. Check whether the manufacturer permits a worktop directly above the machines, how much clearance is needed for vibration, and whether the machines must remain removable for service. Do not assume that two units from different lines have identical heights or depth.

Potential limitations
This arrangement uses more horizontal wall length. If the room’s only long wall contains a window, door, or utility chase, the sink and storage may need to move to another wall. Side-by-side units can also leave less uninterrupted wall for a tall cabinet than a stacked pair, so map storage after placing the machines rather than adding it as an afterthought.
Layout option: stacked compatible front-load machines
Stacking places one front-load appliance above the other and can free wall area for a longer counter, a larger sink zone, or additional storage. It is useful when the room is narrow or when you want a clear work surface at standing height along the opposite wall.
Confirm compatibility before planning cabinets
- Only models approved for stacking should be combined. A universal-looking stacking kit is not proof that two specific machines are compatible.
- Match the exact model numbers to the manufacturer’s stacking kit and installation instructions.
- Check the combined height against the ceiling, light fixtures, shelves, and any overhead cabinet.
- Confirm that the lower machine can be serviced and that the upper controls and door are comfortable for every user.
Whirlpool’s room-sizing guidance notes that some front-load pairs can be stacked, while exact dimensions and installation requirements vary by model. Treat stacking as a space-trade decision, not an automatic upgrade: you gain wall length but lose the broad top surface that side-by-side machines can support.
Plan the loading and service zone
Keep an open area in front of the stack for baskets and a person transferring clothes. Avoid placing a deep sink or tall hamper directly in the door-swing path. Leave a practical route to shut-off valves, the drain, electrical connection, and vent so a technician does not have to dismantle permanent cabinetry for routine service.

The example reserves a 30-inch-wide by 24-inch-deep zone for a utility sink and recommends a deep single-bowl basin for soaking. That allocation is a useful starting point for a freestanding laundry utility sink, but the cabinet, basin rim, faucet, drain, and supply connections all consume space. Verify the assembled dimensions, not just the bowl size.

Choose the sink’s job first
- For soaking bulky items, prioritize basin depth and an unobstructed single bowl.
- For handwashing and quick rinsing, a shallower basin may be easier to reach, especially for children or shorter users.
- If you will wash paintbrushes, muddy shoes, or pet items, plan a durable finish and a nearby floor-protection strategy rather than placing the sink where splashes reach stored linens.
Position the sink near the machines and sorting area, but keep its cabinet doors from colliding with appliance doors or the room entrance. Confirm that the drain route can be vented correctly and that shut-off valves remain accessible. A sink shown on a sketch is not installable until the plumbing path, trap location, and wall depth have been checked.
Build a folding and sorting workflow
A folding counter is most useful when it is clear at the moment a dryer finishes. In the cited plan, the folding allocation is 42 inches; use that as a reference for the amount of dedicated surface in one successful arrangement, not as a minimum for every household.
Counter over machines
A continuous counter over compatible front-load machines keeps folding close to the transfer point. Before fabricating it, verify machine height, vibration guidance, rear connections, and how the machines will be removed. Leave enough front clearance to open both doors fully and stand between the doors and the counter edge.

Separate counter or island
A separate counter can double as a sorting station and gives you flexibility if the machines are stacked. It should not create a pinch point between the counter edge, an open appliance door, and the doorway. Use a scaled drawing with baskets represented at their real width; a counter that looks generous without baskets may be difficult to use.
Counter height and edge details
Select a height that suits the people who fold most often. Round or ease exposed edges, protect the wall behind a wet sink zone, and choose a surface that tolerates detergent, moisture, and occasional bleach splashes. Keep the folding area visually separate from the utility sink so clean garments do not sit beside dripping items.

Storage, hampers, and linen cabinets
A linen cabinet and hampers can fit into an 8×10 plan, but storage has to be placed after circulation and appliance doors are drawn. Tall cabinetry is especially easy to misplace: near the entry it can make the room feel narrow, and beside a front-load machine it can block an open door or service access.
Use storage by task
- Put everyday detergent, stain remover, and dryer supplies in shallow, reachable storage near the machines.
- Reserve a linen cabinet for folded towels, sheets, and backstock so the folding surface does not become long-term storage.
- Use divided hampers for sorting only when their lids and pull-out baskets can open without occupying the main walking route.
- Keep chemicals in closed, clearly labeled storage, away from children and pets and separate from clean textiles.
Measure the full depth of pull-out hampers and cabinet doors. A cabinet that is technically outside the aisle can still reduce usable space when its door is open. If the room is shared with a household utility function, leave access to shut-offs and electrical equipment instead of boxing them in.
Clearances behind and beside appliances
Whirlpool gives about six inches behind a washer or dryer as a typical starting allowance for hoses, venting, and connections, and notes that some closet installations call for at least one inch at each side. These figures are guidance, not a substitute for the installation manual for your exact model.
Depth is often the hidden problem in a laundry room. The cabinet or counter line must account for the appliance body plus rear hoses, power cords, vent elbows, and any required air gap. A shallow-looking plan can project farther into the aisle once those connections are installed. Confirm whether the dryer vent exits straight back or needs a side or offset connection; the bend can change the final depth.
Keep the walking route continuous from the doorway to the machines and sink. The published example shows a 45-inch center aisle, but your usable aisle may be reduced by open doors, hamper drawers, or a counter overhang. Draw those objects in their open positions and test the narrowest point, not the empty-room distance.

Side-by-side or stacked: a practical comparison
| Planning question | Side-by-side front-load pair | Stacked compatible front-load pair |
|---|---|---|
| Wall length | Uses more horizontal wall length | Frees wall length for storage or a work surface |
| Top surface | Can support a counter when machines and clearances permit | Does not provide a broad shared top for folding |
| Model requirement | Each machine must fit its own width, depth, and door-swing envelope | Machines and stacking kit must be specifically compatible |
| Access to controls | Controls are generally at a similar level | Upper controls and door must be reachable comfortably |
| Key checks | Counter support, vibration, open-door clearance, rear connections | Combined height, ceiling clearance, service access, stacking instructions |
Neither configuration wins for every room. Choose side by side when a folding counter and easy loading are the priority; choose stacking when reclaimed wall space is more valuable and every user can operate the upper machine comfortably.

- Draw the shell. Mark finished dimensions, doorway swing, windows, vents, outlets, plumbing, and fixed obstacles.
- Place the machines. Use exact model dimensions and installation guides. Draw doors, lids, rear connections, and service space.
- Choose the configuration. Compare side-by-side and stacking against wall length, counter needs, ergonomics, and compatibility.
- Add the sink. Reserve the basin and cabinet footprint, then route supply and drain lines without blocking access.
- Add folding and sorting. Position the counter where a finished load can be transferred without crossing the doorway or an open appliance door.
- Place storage last. Add linen cabinets, hampers, and shelves only after the walking route and service access remain clear.
- Test real movements. On the floor, tape the footprints of machines, counters, and cabinets. Open every door and drawer, carry a full basket, and stand at the sink before committing.
- Confirm installation details. Have the appliance, plumbing, electrical, and vent requirements checked against the final models before construction or cabinet fabrication.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Copying a plan without checking the doorway
A layout can fit the room and still fail during delivery or daily use if a cabinet narrows the entrance. Reposition tall storage or reverse the door swing where permitted by code and the existing frame.
Using nominal appliance depth
Listings often omit hoses, vent elbows, and power connections. Recalculate the projection from the finished wall and move the counter line forward only after the installation guide confirms the allowance.
Blocking the service points
Permanent cabinets should not trap shut-off valves, receptacles, drains, or the dryer vent. Use removable panels or redesign the run so a technician can reach each connection.
Choosing a stack for everyone else
If the upper controls or door are uncomfortable for a primary user, the saved wall space is not worth the daily strain. Keep the pair side by side or lower the storage plan instead.
Letting hampers consume the aisle
Pull-out hampers and open lids can be wider than their cabinet faces suggest. Tape their open footprints and preserve a continuous route before ordering them.
Making the room flexible over time
Plan for appliance replacement, not only the machines you own today. Leave a route for removing each unit, avoid building a counter that depends on one brand’s exact height, and keep plumbing shut-offs identifiable. If you may change from side-by-side to stacking later, reserve a wall and utility path that could support the alternate configuration.
Use durable, moisture-tolerant finishes around the sink and machines, but keep maintenance access visible. The best 8×10 laundry room is not the one with the most cabinets; it is the one where sorting, washing, soaking, drying, folding, and storage happen without doors colliding or utilities becoming unreachable.
