Shopify is the strongest choice for a growing, multichannel art business; Squarespace is best for a portfolio-led brand; Big Cartel suits small independent catalogs; Etsy offers marketplace discovery; WooCommerce provides maximum control; and Square Online is especially useful for artists who sell at events.

The right choice depends on what you sell—originals, prints, commissions, downloads, merchandise, or print-on-demand products—where your buyers come from, and how much technical work you want to manage. Prices below are U.S. signals in USD and can change by country, billing term, tax, and promotion.

A platform’s subscription is only one part of the cost. Payment processing, platform fees, apps, hosting, fulfillment, advertising, shipping, tax tools, and maintenance can matter more than the headline price.
1. Shopify: best overall for a serious, scalable art business
Shopify is the best general-purpose choice for artists building a long-term brand. It supports broad product catalogs, multiple sales channels, inventory management, in-person selling, custom domains, and a large ecosystem for print-on-demand, shipping, email, subscriptions, reviews, and analytics.
Shopify’s U.S. Basic plan is listed at $29/month when paid yearly or $39/month when paid monthly. The pricing page lists online card rates from 2.9% + $0.30 on Basic. Using a third-party payment provider can add Shopify transaction fees.

- Artists selling originals, prints, merchandise, and digital products together.
- Print-on-demand businesses and multichannel sellers.
- Artists expecting to add staff, locations, apps, or international sales.
Trade-offs
Shopify can be unnecessary for a ten-product shop. Apps may materially increase the monthly bill, and themes or integrations require maintenance. It also does not provide Etsy-style built-in buyer discovery; you must generate traffic through search, social media, email, partnerships, or advertising.
Verdict: The best overall platform when your art business is becoming a real commerce operation.
2. Squarespace: best portfolio-and-shop combination
Squarespace is a strong fit when the website is primarily a portfolio, gallery, or brand experience with a relatively small shop attached. Its templates are designed for image-led presentation, and one system can handle a portfolio, blog, domain, products, services, appointments, and some memberships.
The official pricing page shows a 2% online-store transaction fee on the entry-level plan and 0% on higher commerce-oriented plans. Digital content and membership fees can follow different schedules, so do not apply physical-product fees to every sale.

3. Wix: best for flexible visual design
Wix combines a drag-and-drop site builder with e-commerce plans. It is useful for artists who want more layout freedom than a tightly templated portfolio builder and need forms, bookings, blogging, content, and a shop in one place.

Wix’s pricing varies by location, currency, billing period, taxes, and promotions. The free plan is not an e-commerce plan; accepting payments requires an eligible paid tier.
Strengths: visual editing, flexible page layouts, portfolio tools, forms, bookings, and a broad app ecosystem.
Trade-offs: advanced commerce can require higher tiers or add-ons, and excessive design customization can create inconsistent mobile layouts or slower pages. Migration may require rebuilding rather than exporting a complete store.
Verdict: A beginner-friendly design alternative to Squarespace, especially for artists who want extensive page-level control.
4. Big Cartel: best for small independent catalogs
Big Cartel is particularly well matched to independent artists and makers with a modest number of products. Its current pricing page shows a plan that is $0 to start, with the page stating that a seven-day trial becomes $15/month, plus a $30/month Diamond plan.
The platform lists support for physical and digital products, custom domains, inventory tracking, print shipping labels, print-on-demand apps, design customization, and in-person selling. It also lists tools for importing products from Etsy, Squarespace, and Shopify.
Best for: limited drops, small print catalogs, handmade products, and artists who want a simple independent storefront.
Trade-offs: it has less operational depth, automation, analytics, and ecosystem breadth than Shopify. “Free to start” does not mean every feature is free, and you still need to bring your own traffic.

5. Etsy: best for marketplace discovery
Etsy is fundamentally different from the other platforms. It is a marketplace where shoppers can discover products, rather than simply a storefront that you must promote yourself.
Etsy lists a $0.20 listing fee and a 6.5% transaction fee. Payment-processing fees vary by seller country. A one-time setup fee may apply, and Offsite Ads can add 15% or 12% under Etsy’s rules. U.S. sellers should therefore never treat 6.5% as the complete cost.
Why artists choose Etsy
- Existing shopper intent and marketplace search.
- Familiar checkout and buyer trust.
- Fast setup for handmade products, originals, and crafts.
- A practical way to test demand without first building an audience.
What you give up
You have less control over branding, customer experience, repeat marketing, and customer information. You also compete beside similar listings and depend on Etsy’s search, policies, advertising systems, and account rules. Etsy prohibits completing an Etsy-initiated transaction off platform to avoid its fees.
Verdict: Etsy is best for discovery, not independence. For a durable business, consider Etsy as one channel alongside an owned store.
6. WooCommerce: best for maximum control on WordPress
WooCommerce is a free, open-source commerce platform for WordPress. It gives technically confident artists control over hosting, content, checkout, payment gateways, product data, SEO, and extensions.
WooCommerce’s core has no monthly subscription or revenue share, but the official pricing page estimates hosting for most stores at $25–$350/month and extensions at $29–$299/year each. Payment providers charge their own processing fees.
Best for: artists who already use WordPress, need unusual commission or membership workflows, or want to control the entire technical stack.

Square Online is especially useful for artists selling at fairs, conventions, studios, galleries, and pop-ups. It connects online selling with Square’s point-of-sale ecosystem, making inventory synchronization and in-person payments more practical.

8. Ecwid: best for adding a store to an existing website
Ecwid is useful when you already have a portfolio, blog, or website and want to add commerce without rebuilding the entire site. It can suit an artist who has an established web presence and only needs products, checkout, and inventory tools.
The main advantage is lower disruption: your existing content remains the center of the brand while Ecwid supplies the shop. Check the current pricing page for product limits, plan features, and add-on requirements because those details can change.
Trade-offs: the store may feel less integrated than an all-in-one website builder, and it does not supply marketplace discovery. It is less compelling for an artist starting from zero who also needs a complete portfolio site.
Verdict: The best add-on store for an existing website, not necessarily the best complete website platform.

Choose by what you sell
Original paintings and sculpture
Prioritize one-unit inventory, high-value payment handling, insured shipping, custom shipping quotes, tax configuration, reservations, and a way to mark a piece sold without deleting its page. Shopify, WooCommerce, Squarespace, and Big Cartel can all work; the deciding factor is usually operational complexity and shipping rather than visual design.

Prints and editions
Look for variants, edition numbers, size and color options, bundles, shipping rules, product mockups, inventory synchronization, and print-on-demand integrations. Shopify is the strongest long-term choice; Big Cartel suits a small catalog, while Squarespace and Wix are attractive when presentation leads the decision.
Digital downloads
Check automatic delivery, file size, bandwidth, download limits, link protection, licensing, refunds, and tax handling. Sellfy is a natural candidate, but Shopify, WooCommerce, Squarespace, and Etsy may also work depending on fees and file-delivery requirements.
Commissions
Prioritize inquiry forms, deposits, custom or private checkout links, scheduling, revision terms, cancellation policies, and client communication. Squarespace, Wix, Shopify, and WooCommerce are generally more flexible than a marketplace when commissions are the core business.
Print-on-demand merchandise
Confirm that your chosen platform supports the provider you want to use, then calculate the full contribution margin. Integration availability does not guarantee good product quality, shipping speed, margins, or customer support.
Art fairs and conventions
Prioritize mobile checkout, card readers, Tap to Pay, receipts, tax configuration, inventory synchronization, and behavior during poor connectivity. Square Online is the obvious specialist; Shopify is the stronger alternative for a larger multichannel operation.
Marketplace or owned storefront?
A marketplace such as Etsy supplies discovery but limits control. An owned store such as Shopify, Squarespace, Wix, Big Cartel, WooCommerce, Square Online, Ecwid, or Sellfy gives you more control over your domain, design, product data, checkout, and customer-retention strategy—but you must create the traffic.
Replacing Etsy with a new website does not automatically replace Etsy’s audience. If you have no following, newsletter, search visibility, or advertising budget, Etsy may produce earlier discovery. If you already have an Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, newsletter, or portfolio audience, an owned store is usually more strategically valuable.
How to calculate the real cost
Real annual cost = subscription or hosting + payment processing + platform transaction fees + apps or plugins + domain + email + fulfillment + advertising + tax/accounting tools + maintenance.

A low-priced print may become expensive after payment, platform, app, and shipping costs. WooCommerce’s free core still requires hosting and maintenance. Shopify’s annual-billing price excludes many apps. A platform advertising “0% transaction fees” may still charge a subscription and payment-processing fees.
Compare platforms using your actual average order value, monthly order count, product margin, fulfillment method, and traffic source—not just the cheapest advertised plan.
