These nine U.S. hotels turn a night away into a walk through design history. You can sleep inside a 1962 airport terminal, order a drink in a restored aircraft, swim beside a 1950s motor lodge, or book a Route 66 room themed around rockabilly and Western television. The common thread is not one decade or one decorating style: “retro” here includes Googie, midcentury modern, roadside architecture, coastal bungalow design, and carefully staged nostalgia.

The selection follows Architectural Digest’s November 6, 2023 feature by Katherine McLaughlin, whose concise description is apt: “They’re portals to a distinct moment in design history.” Treat the historical descriptions as the reason to visit, then confirm current rates, availability, amenities, and policies directly with each hotel before booking.

What makes these hotels retro?
Retro is a range of design languages rather than a single look. Googie uses expressive angles, neon-era optimism, and space-age curves; midcentury modern favors clean lines and practical forms; roadside motels preserve the automobile-centered travel culture of the 1950s and 1960s; coastal properties reinterpret surf, dune, and bungalow traditions. Some hotels retain original buildings and details, while others are newer renovations that use furniture, colors, and references to evoke an earlier period.

Perfect for walls, trim, cabinets, doors, furniture, and detailed cutting-in work on any project.

Combined with the 1.5 and 2.5 inch angle sash brushes you have precision cutting-in covered at every scale — baseboards, crown molding, door casings, and ceiling lines.
- FLAT BRUSHES FOR BROAD SMOOTH COVERAGE ON ANY SURFACE — The 1 and 2 inch flat brushes deliver even coverage on walls, furniture, shelving, doors, fences, decks, and wood surfaces. Ideal for applying primers, stains, varnishes, polyurethane, and specialty coatings. Ideal for property managers, remodeling contractors, apartment turnover crews, maintenance teams, and commercial painting operations. Backed by thousands of verified reviews from working painters. Washable and reusable for multiple projects.
That distinction matters when planning. A stay at an airport landmark is an architecture-and-aviation trip. A Cape Cod motor lodge works better as a beach holiday. A Route 66 property belongs in a driving itinerary, and a downtown Savannah motel can anchor a walking weekend. The nine examples below are spread across the country, so geography shapes the experience as much as the décor.

1. TWA Hotel: sleep inside a jet-age landmark
The TWA Hotel occupies Eero Saarinen’s TWA Flight Center at John F. Kennedy International Airport, completed in 1962. Its dramatic concrete shell and sweeping interiors make the building itself the main attraction. This is the choice for travelers who want a preserved piece of aviation history rather than a motel that merely borrows vintage colors.
What you can do on-site
- Explore exhibits about the terminal and the era of commercial air travel.
- Swim in the rooftop infinity pool, with views toward airport operations.
- Use the gym, described by Architectural Digest in 2023 as 10,000 square feet.
- Visit Connie, a restored Lockheed Constellation L-1649A on the tarmac that now houses a cocktail bar.
- Book a conventional overnight room or ask about the hotel’s day-use “Daytripper” option.
The hotel’s official site identifies it as JFK’s only on-airport hotel and provides current room, exhibit, pool, and day-use information. Because airport access rules, operating hours, and room inventory can change, verify those details when you reserve.

2. Egyptian Motor Hotel: a 1950s courtyard with a social pulse
Phoenix’s Egyptian Motor Hotel is a revived 1950s motor lodge organized around a courtyard. Instead of presenting nostalgia as a quiet museum piece, the property uses the courtyard as a contemporary gathering space with live music, games, dining, and outdoor nightlife. It suits travelers who want retro architecture with an active evening scene.
Scale and setting
Architectural Digest counted 47 rooms and described an outdoor entertainment venue with 250 seats in 2023. The official property information lists 765 Grand Avenue and positions the hotel as a base for Phoenix events. Check the current event calendar and dining hours before you go; performances and service schedules are more changeable than the building’s midcentury shell.

3. The Pearl Hotel: 1959 California modernism in Point Loma
Architect Robert Platt designed the Point Loma property in 1959, when it was known as Sportsman’s Lodge. The Pearl Hotel keeps original architectural cues but layers in contemporary furniture and vintage finds, creating a curated look rather than a strict period replica.
Details that define the stay
- An oyster-shaped pool gives the courtyard a sculptural focal point.
- Artwork honors Ama, the female Japanese pearl divers, tying the hotel’s name and visual story to the sea.
- The mix of retained details and newer pieces lets you see how a historic motel can be updated without erasing its identity.
Choose The Pearl when your itinerary centers on San Diego’s coastal neighborhoods and you want design interest between beach or city excursions.

Hotel June occupies the former Malibu Riviera Motel, a coastal bungalow property. Gary Wilcox sold the property in 2015, and it reopened as Hotel June in 2021 with a contemporary update. The result is less a time capsule than a modern interpretation of the classic Southern California motel.
Why its history is part of the appeal
Architectural Digest also recounts the property’s connection to Bob Dylan’s writing of much of Blood on the Tracks. That attribution belongs to the feature; it should be treated as historical context rather than a promise of a particular author’s presence or a current hotel amenity. The practical draw is the Malibu location and bungalow-scale layout, which work well for a coast-focused trip.
5. Bluebird Dennisport: Cape Cod nostalgia without losing the beach
Bluebird Dennisport occupies the 1950s Elder & Ash motor lodge on Cape Cod. Its rooms take cues from dune shacks, while cottages expand the options for travelers who want more space. Original pink bathroom tiles are among the details that connect the renovation to the property’s earlier life.

Best for a coastal itinerary
This is the natural pick for a Cape Cod trip built around beaches, seafood, and village drives. The design is intentionally relaxed rather than polished in a formal way: the pleasure comes from recognizable regional references and the survival of small original elements. Confirm seasonal opening dates, room configuration, and cancellation terms directly with the property, especially outside the summer peak.

Built in 1964, Savannah’s Thunderbird Inn is described by Architectural Digest as a midcentury-modern downtown motor lodge and a property on the National Register of Historic Places. Its original concept reflected automobile travel: drive-in parking and, historically, refrigerated rooms were part of the experience.
What changed over time
The feature reports solar panels and building-system improvements added in 2016. Those environmental and systems details are claims made in that feature, not a guarantee of current performance. The important visitor takeaway is that the hotel combines a recognizable roadside form with a downtown Savannah location, allowing a walking-oriented city break without giving up the visual language of a motor court.
7. Austin Motel: pop art and a kidney-shaped pool on South Congress
Austin Motel translates 1950s motel references into a distinctly Austin setting. Rooms use pop-art-inspired graphics, 1950s-inspired furniture, and push-button phones, while the kidney-shaped pool is framed by reproduced midcentury seating.
Planning the stay
Architectural Digest reported 41 rooms and guest suites in 2023. The property’s current booking path is presented through its operating group’s press and reservation pages. Verify room categories, pool rules, parking, and event schedules before arrival; South Congress is a busy neighborhood, and the experience can vary between a quiet weekday and a high-demand weekend.

- Bates paint brushes can be used for both oil-based paints as well as latex stains and are ideal for home or commercial projects such as decks, fences or DIY painting jobs.
Austin Motel is a strong choice when the hotel is part of the itinerary rather than merely a place to sleep: spend time by the pool, walk South Congress, and use the visual details as a guide to the city’s playful design culture.

Motel Safari dates to 1959 and represents the exuberant Googie side of roadside architecture. Richard and Gail Talley restored the Tucumcari property in 2007, preserving its Route 66 identity while giving individual rooms strong themes.
The themed rooms
- The Rockabilly Suite honors Wanda Jackson.
- The Rawhide Suite references the Western television series.
- Standard rooms and additional themed suites provide less elaborate options.
Important check-in and rate details
The official site lists rates dated March 1, 2026; treat those figures as date-specific and verify them before booking. It states a 3–10 p.m. check-in window in Mountain Time and no check-in after 10 p.m. That restriction is especially important on a long road day, so plan your arrival rather than assuming a late-night desk will be available. Motel Safari makes the most sense as part of a Route 66 driving plan; a printed Route 66 travel guide can help organize nearby stops without turning the hotel into a stand-alone destination.
9. Dive Motel: Nashville rooms staged like a private time capsule
Dive Motel reimagines Nashville’s 1956 Key Motel as a collection of individually themed rooms. Architectural Digest counted 29 rooms in 2023. The strongest effects are tactile and theatrical: shag carpeting, sunken tiled tubs, and a disco ball define the Honeymoon Suite, while another room uses a dark green ceiling and log walls for a completely different mood.
Choose a room, not just a hotel
Because the rooms are individually designed, the category you book determines much of the experience. Read the current room descriptions and photographs carefully, then decide whether you want the maximal Honeymoon Suite or a quieter, darker interior. The feature notes that country music stars have stayed there; that is historical color, not a current amenity or endorsement.

How to choose the right retro hotel
Match the architecture to your trip
- For aviation and architecture: TWA Hotel.
- For nightlife around a courtyard: Egyptian Motor Hotel.
- For coastal California: The Pearl Hotel or Hotel June Malibu.
- For a Cape Cod beach trip: Bluebird Dennisport.
- For a historic Savannah weekend: Thunderbird Inn.
- For a design-forward city stay: Austin Motel or Dive Motel.
- For a road trip: Motel Safari.
Decide how much original fabric you want
TWA Hotel, Thunderbird Inn, Motel Safari, and the former Sportsman’s Lodge retain especially legible links to their original structures. Hotel June Malibu and Austin Motel lean more heavily on contemporary updates and reproduction furnishings. Neither approach is more authentic; they answer different expectations. If you want original tile, signage, circulation, or structural forms, prioritize the properties where the older building remains central. If you prefer modern comfort wrapped in period references, choose a more extensively updated property.
Check the practical details before paying
- Confirm that the hotel is operating on your dates and that the room type shown online is still available.
- Read current cancellation, parking, pet, pool, and age policies.
- Check arrival deadlines, especially Motel Safari’s 10 p.m. Mountain Time cutoff.
- Verify seasonal amenities, event schedules, and restaurant hours.
- Ask whether historic features create accessibility or noise considerations in your selected room.
Rates, inventory, policies, and amenities are volatile. Official pages checked October 13, 2026 provide current booking information for TWA Hotel, Egyptian Motor Hotel, Austin Motel, and Motel Safari, but even those details should be rechecked immediately before purchase. A hotel’s booking link does not by itself establish an affiliate relationship, commission, or special rate.
Building a multi-stop retro-hotel itinerary
These properties are too widely dispersed for a single efficient loop, so group them by region. A Southern California trip can combine The Pearl Hotel in Point Loma with Hotel June Malibu, while a Texas-and-New-Mex drive can pair Austin Motel with Motel Safari. Savannah and Nashville can form a southeastern design-and-music route, although they are still separated by a substantial drive. The TWA Hotel is easiest as an arrival, departure, or deliberately planned airport night rather than an add-on to a Manhattan itinerary.
Allow time to use each property’s distinctive feature. At TWA, schedule the exhibits, pool, gym, or aircraft bar instead of treating the hotel as a bed near a flight. At Egyptian Motor Hotel, check the live program. At Austin Motel and Dive Motel, the room and pool or common areas are part of the attraction. On Route 66, protect your Motel Safari arrival window. The best stays are designed around these constraints rather than squeezed between unrelated stops.
