These nine pink paint shades come from named designers’ project work and recommendations published by Architectural Digest on January 17, 2022. They are not ranked test winners: the group ranges from barely-there dusty pink and peachy neutral to blush and clear terra-cotta, with several shades chosen for a particular ceiling, exterior, or limewash finish.

The most useful way to choose among them is to start with undertone and application. Pick Primrose or Peignoir for a restrained, dusty room; Pink Swirl or Fairest Pink when you want a noticeable blush; and Potter’s Clay, Casabella, or Nautilus Shell 064 when pink needs to sit comfortably beside clay, stone, wood, or other architectural colors.

What this designer list tells you—and what it does not

The nine selections are attributed recommendations, not a standardized comparison. The designers describe how each color behaved in a named project or how they like to use it, but the article supplies no light-reflectance values, colorimetric measurements, coverage rates, durability tests, or ranked performance results. A shade that looks quiet in one room can read much stronger in another because daylight, artificial light, sheen, adjacent colors, and the wall surface all change its appearance.

The recommendations were reported in 2022. Confirm the current name, formula, finish compatibility, sample-card color, regional availability, and retailer stock with the maker before ordering paint. The descriptions below preserve what the cited designers said rather than presenting their impressions as laboratory measurements.

Soft pinks for a quiet, layered room

Primrose: a pale ceiling color that can stand up to dark wood

Eve Ashcraft calls Domingue Architectural Finishes Primrose “pale and pretty.” Her specific recommendation is to use it on ceilings, where a light pink can add warmth without making the walls feel overtly rosy. She also reports using Primrose as limewash and says it is beautiful behind dark wood. That combination makes the shade a useful starting point for rooms with walnut, stained oak, or other deep timber tones: the pink supplies contrast while the wood keeps the overall scheme grounded.

Because the source ties Primrose to both ceilings and limewash, do not assume every version of the color is interchangeable across products. Check whether the maker offers the shade in the finish you need and whether the surface preparation suits that finish. A ceiling sample viewed only under wall-level lighting will not tell you exactly how it will read overhead.

Peignoir: dusty pink with a deliberate contrast strategy

Christine Gachot describes Farrow & Ball Peignoir as a lighter, dustier pink when compared with camel. Her pairing advice is direct: “Pair with a rich burgundy or dark navy.” Those dark, saturated partners give a muted pink a clear edge, whether they appear on upholstery, cabinetry, trim, or adjoining rooms. If you want pink to behave like a neutral rather than a sugary accent, Peignoir’s dusty direction and the contrast colors Gachot names provide a coherent starting point.

Foxy Brown: a classic pink without a gendered brief

Emily Ward calls Benjamin Moore Foxy Brown a classic pink that feels both masculine and feminine and says it looks good in any light. That last phrase is Ward’s opinion, not a measured performance claim, so test the color in the actual room before committing. Her description is valuable as a design brief: Foxy Brown is intended to avoid a narrowly themed nursery or overtly decorative look and instead support a room whose furniture and materials determine its character.

Blush and richer rosy shades

Uccello Pink: historical inspiration with more depth

Kelly Behun connects Donald Kaufman Uccello Pink to the faded egg tempera on a 15th-century triptych by Florentine painter Paolo Uccello. She calls the result rich and sophisticated. The historical reference explains why this is not presented as a pastel: the appeal is the layered, slightly aged quality associated with a painted artwork. Use that description when deciding between a very pale pink and a color with enough body to hold its own beside art, patterned textiles, or dark furnishings.

Fairest Pink: warm, playful, and deliberately not poppy

Andre Herrero of Charlap Hyman & Herrero used Benjamin Moore Fairest Pink in a Moda Operandi project and describes it as “sophisticated, playful, and warm—without being too poppy.” That combination places Fairest Pink between a timid neutral and a high-energy candy pink. It is a good candidate when you want a room to feel cheerful but still composed, especially where warm materials or tailored furniture need a rosy wall color that will not dominate them.

Pink Swirl: a champagne-like blush for a feature room

Corey Damen Jenkins used Benjamin Moore Pink Swirl extensively in the Ladies Library at the 2019 Kips Bay Decorator Show House. He compares the room’s walls to champagne. The description suggests a blush with enough presence to shape the atmosphere of an entire room rather than merely tinting trim. In a library, sitting room, or dressing space, a full wall treatment can make the color feel intentional; sample it on more than one wall so you can see how the blush shifts between direct light and shadow.

Peach and terra-cotta directions

Nautilus Shell 064: a peachy neutral for architecture and contrast

Jenny French of French 2D used Benjamin Moore Nautilus Shell 064 as the main exterior body color of a cohousing project. She describes it as a peachy neutral that worked with nearby Victorian “painted ladies” and provided a base for contrasting colors. This is the clearest exterior example in the group. Rather than treating pink as an isolated accent, the project used a subdued peach to connect a new building to a colorful architectural context while leaving room for stronger trim or neighboring hues.

For an exterior decision, view a physical sample against the actual façade and surrounding buildings. The source does not provide a fade-resistance test, regional weather qualification, or a current exterior-product specification, so those details must come from the maker for your location and chosen coating.

Potter’s Clay: bright warmth in a limewash surface

Mandy Cheng used Portola Paint Potter’s Clay in her office’s limewash finish and describes it as warm and bright, with a terra-cotta reference. The finish matters as much as the color: limewash creates variation and movement that a uniform film finish may not reproduce. If you are seeking Potter’s Clay for ordinary walls, verify that the product and finish you buy are intended to deliver the same appearance as the limewash example Cheng cites.

Casabella: a light terra-cotta ceiling treatment

David Rockwell used Benjamin Moore Casabella on the ceiling at Casa Dani as part of a custom terra-cotta blush limewash palette. He describes Casabella as a warm, light terra-cotta hue. A ceiling application can make a warm color feel enveloping without requiring every wall to be pink, and the custom palette indicates that Casabella was considered alongside related blush and clay tones rather than in isolation.

Two additional pinks that show how designers make the color feel current

Setting Plaster and Pink Ground as tonal reference points

The article also discusses Farrow & Ball Setting Plaster and Pink Ground, although they are contextual examples rather than two of the nine additional picks. Farrow & Ball color curator Joa Studholme calls them timeless because they feel like “they’re giving you a big embrace.” Steven Johanknecht of Commune Design describes Pink Ground as a warm, dusty pink with hints of yellow and says it was the perfect color to capture the Hollywood glamour of the 1930s. The article reports that Pink Ground was specified for a Goop store in New York. These comments show how yellow warmth and a dusty finish can keep pink from reading as juvenile, but they remain attributed design opinions rather than objective color classifications.

How to choose one of the nine

Choose by undertone first

  • Dusty and quiet: Start with Peignoir, Primrose, or Foxy Brown when you want pink to function close to a neutral.
  • Blush and rosy: Consider Pink Swirl, Fairest Pink, or the richer Uccello Pink when the color should be clearly visible on walls.
  • Peach and clay: Nautilus Shell 064, Potter’s Clay, and Casabella move toward peach or terra-cotta and generally make sense beside stone, plaster, tile, or warm wood.

Match the color to the surface

  • Ceilings: Primrose and Casabella have specific ceiling examples in the source.
  • Exterior body color: Nautilus Shell 064 is the only recommendation tied to a main exterior body treatment.
  • Limewash: Primrose, Potter’s Clay, and Casabella are each associated with limewash use, but in different projects and products.
  • Full interior walls: Fairest Pink and Pink Swirl have named interior wall applications; Uccello Pink, Peignoir, and Foxy Brown are presented as broader designer color recommendations.

Use surrounding materials as a decision filter

Dark wood is the explicit companion for Primrose. Burgundy and dark navy are Gachot’s pairings for Peignoir. Nautilus Shell 064 was selected to sit among colorful Victorian façades, while the terra-cotta shades were shown with limewash and architectural finishes. If your room already contains a dominant material, place sample boards beside it rather than judging the pink against a white wall.

A practical sampling process

  1. Confirm the exact product. Record the maker, full shade name, number where supplied, and intended finish. Names can exist in multiple product lines, and the 2022 article does not verify current formulas or stock.
  2. Sample on a movable board. Paint a large board or several boards so you can compare the color against flooring, wood, stone, fabric, and metal without permanently coating the wall.
  3. View morning, afternoon, and evening conditions. Move the board around the room and observe it in daylight and the artificial light you actually use. A pink that looks dusty in one corner may become peachier or more saturated elsewhere.
  4. Test the intended finish. If you want limewash, test the limewash system itself; a flat or eggshell sample cannot predict its texture and variation. Follow the maker’s surface-preparation and compatibility instructions.
  5. Compare neighboring colors. Put the leading samples beside the trim, ceiling, cabinetry, and largest furnishings. Eliminate shades that fight the fixed elements before considering decorative accents.
  6. Check the full-scale impression. A small chip can hide undertone and visual weight. Keep the finalists in the room long enough to see whether the color still feels right when repeated across the intended area.

What you can and cannot infer from the recommendations

You can use the nine examples to build a palette direction, identify a likely undertone, and see how professional designers applied pink to ceilings, walls, exteriors, and limewash. You cannot use them to infer a universal ranking, a guaranteed appearance in every light, a coverage rate, a durability advantage, or current retail availability. No named statistics on pink preference, sales, adoption, or performance are provided.

That distinction is especially important when a designer’s phrase sounds absolute. Ward’s claim that Foxy Brown looks good in any light and Ashcraft’s praise of Primrose are useful aesthetic judgments, not controlled tests. Likewise, the descriptions of sophistication, warmth, champagne, or a big embrace communicate mood and context rather than a measurable specification.

Making pink feel fresh rather than predictable

The source’s projects point to a few reliable design moves. Use a pale pink on the ceiling instead of defaulting to white, as with Primrose or Casabella. Choose a dusty or peachy neutral that can sit beside existing architecture, as with Peignoir or Nautilus Shell 064. Let dark wood, burgundy, navy, or contrasting trim provide structure so the pink does not carry the entire composition. Finally, consider a finish with visible variation, such as the limewash examples, when a flat expanse would feel too ordinary.

Those are starting points, not prescriptions. The strongest choice is the shade whose undertone, surface, and neighboring materials agree in your actual room. Verify the current product details with the manufacturer, sample the finish under your lighting, and then specify the color with the full product name rather than relying on a shade name alone.
