Yes—you can create convincing faux finishes without a specialist crew, but each look depends on a different tool, layer sequence and coating system. The most reliable starting points are a translucent color wash, a sponge-textured metallic finish and layered Venetian plaster or fresco effects.

The original source behind the phrase “9 Incredible Faux Finishes” is not identified in the available manufacturer material. The nine projects below are therefore a practical set of documented finishes and clearly labeled variations, not a claim that they reproduce an unknown original list. Before working on a wall, make a sample panel with the exact primer, base, glaze or plaster and tools you intend to use. Product labels and current technical sheets take precedence over older examples.

What makes a faux finish different from ordinary paint?

Faux painting changes the apparent depth, movement or texture of a surface by combining layers and tool marks. A flat color uses one uniform film. A faux finish may place a translucent glaze over a solid base, add a metallic layer before a decorative glaze, or build thin plaster coats that are later skimmed and burnished.

That distinction matters because the same brush, sponge or trowel does not produce interchangeable results. Color washing is comparatively forgiving: the goal is irregular color variation. Metallic work depends on a controlled pattern over a reflective layer. Venetian plaster is a sequence of thin coats whose pressure and angle determine whether the surface looks softly mottled, fresco-like or polished.

Before you begin: surface, materials and a test panel

Prepare a sound, smooth surface

Remove dust and loose material, repair visible defects and allow repairs to dry. Benjamin Moore’s color-wash guidance recommends a premium primer to improve adhesion and provide a smooth foundation. Use the primer specified for your substrate and selected coating; plaster and decorative products can have different requirements from ordinary wall paint.

Assemble tools for the chosen method

  • Brushes and standard roller covers for the base coat.
  • A sea-sponge mini roller or natural sea sponge for textured and stippled patterns.
  • A glazing mitt when you want to soften or blend a translucent layer by hand.
  • Gloves and a clean mixing container.
  • A plaster spatula or trowel for Venetian plaster and skim coats.
  • Translucent latex glaze, metallic coating or Venetian plaster, as required by the recipe.

Test compatibility and timing

Mixing ratios, recoat windows, sheen and cleanup vary by product. Do not transfer a glaze ratio or drying time from one brand or coating to another. The documented metallic system, for example, says its metallic layer should be brushed through in approximately 15 minutes; that is guidance for that product system, not a universal open time for metallic paint.

Make a sample panel large enough to show the full tool movement. Let it dry for the period stated on the label, then inspect it in the room’s actual lighting. Check adhesion, color contrast, sheen, water resistance and whether the pattern is too dense before committing to the wall.

Nine faux finishes you can make yourself

These projects are arranged from the least tool-intensive to the most demanding. Several are variations on the same documented workflow, because a brush, sponge or trowel can create a genuinely different appearance while using the same coating layers.

1. Brushed translucent color wash

Look: soft, cloudy movement that lets the base color show through.

Materials: premium primer, base paint, compatible translucent latex glaze, brush, mixing container and gloves.

  1. Prime the prepared wall and apply the base color evenly. Allow it to dry according to the label.
  2. Prepare the glaze exactly as directed by its manufacturer. Do not assume a formula used for another glaze will work here.
  3. Brush the glaze over a manageable section, varying direction and pressure so the film remains translucent rather than forming solid stripes.
  4. Feather transitions while the glaze is workable, keeping a wet edge between adjoining sections.
  5. Let the finish dry fully before deciding whether a second decorative pass is needed.

Use this version when you want restrained variation and the control of a brush. Strong base-and-glaze contrast makes the movement more visible; close colors produce a quieter effect.

2. Sea-sponge color wash

Look: a more visibly mottled wash with broken, organic marks.

Materials: the same primed base and compatible glaze, plus a damp natural sea sponge or sea-sponge mini roller.

  1. Complete the primer and base coat, then test the sponge pattern on a sample panel.
  2. Load the sponge lightly. Excess glaze fills the sponge’s openings and creates blobs instead of variation.
  3. Press and lift rather than dragging. Rotate the sponge frequently to prevent a repeated stamp.
  4. Soften any isolated dark spots with a nearly clean sponge or the blending tool recommended by the glaze maker.
  5. Work in small sections and keep the transitions visually connected before moving on.

This is still a color wash: the sponge changes the distribution of the translucent glaze, not the underlying requirement for a compatible primer, base and glaze.

3. Hand-softened glaze wash

Look: low-contrast movement with less obvious sponge or brush marks.

Materials: primed and base-coated wall, compatible translucent glaze, brush or sponge, and a glazing mitt.

  1. Apply a thin glaze layer to a small section using the method approved on the product label.
  2. With the mitt clean and lightly loaded, pat or sweep across the wet glaze to soften hard edges.
  3. Blend neighboring sections before the first area becomes dry enough to show a lap line.
  4. Stop when the pattern is even at normal viewing distance; continued rubbing can remove too much glaze.

A glazing mitt is a useful tool category for decorative work, but manufacturers may specify different handling for different coatings. Treat this as a controlled variation of a color wash and follow the selected product’s instructions.

4. Sponge-textured metallic finish

Look: a reflective ground broken by a colored, sponge-textured veil.

Materials: painted base, metallic coating, decorative glaze, conventional roller cover, sea-sponge mini roller, gloves and mixing container.

  1. Paint the base and let it dry completely.
  2. Apply the metallic layer evenly with the recommended roller or brush.
  3. For the documented product system, brush through the metallic layer within approximately 15 minutes so the surface can be worked while it is open. Verify the current technical bulletin for your product before using that timing.
  4. Roll the decorative glaze with the sea-sponge mini roller, varying direction and overlap to avoid a mechanical repeat.
  5. Inspect the wall from several angles. Metallic particles reflect light differently as you move, so a pattern that looks subtle straight on may be stronger from the side.

The metallic layer is essential to this effect. A sponge-rolled glaze over ordinary flat paint will not have the same reflective depth.

5. Dense metallic impression

Look: a bolder, more tactile metallic pattern for a feature wall or architectural recess.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Materials: the same three-layer system as the sponge-textured metallic finish, with a sea-sponge roller and a sample panel.

  1. Apply the base and metallic layers as directed for the selected system.
  2. On the sample panel, test closer sponge overlaps and a slightly heavier glaze load.
  3. Transfer the approved pattern to the wall, keeping the roller moving so no single area receives an unintended pool of glaze.
  4. Back away periodically and check the pattern under the room’s final lighting.

This is a visual variation, not a new universal formula. More glaze or tighter overlaps can hide the metallic ground, while too little can make the pattern disappear. Let the product label determine allowable film thickness and recoat conditions.

6. Matte Venetian plaster with crossing strokes

Look: shallow mineral movement with visible directional variation rather than a mirror-like shine.

Materials: compatible plaster, a plaster spatula or trowel, prepared base and clean tools.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Paint or prime the base as required by the plaster system.
  2. Spread a thin first plaster coat in small crossing strokes. Keep the coat thin; heavy buildup makes later skimming difficult.
  3. Allow the first coat to dry for the period specified by the product.
  4. Apply a second thin coat. The technical bulletin describes holding the spatula at a steeper angle and skimming the surface to compress and refine it.
  5. Let the second coat dry, then inspect for ridges or recessed areas that need correction under the product instructions.

Use light, changing pressure. A trowel held nearly flat tends to skim and compress; a lower angle deposits more material. The correct balance depends on the plaster’s consistency and the look you want.

7. Burnished polished plaster

Look: higher sheen with subtle highlights across the layered plaster.

Materials: the same plaster system, a clean spatula or trowel and, where specified, a compatible wax or sealer.

Bates- Paint Brushes, 6 Pack, Treated Wood Handle Brushes for Walls | for Stain Application and Interior Painting Projects
  • Bates paint brushes come in a convenient 6 pieces with 3 flat and 3 angled bristle styles, including (1”, 1.5”, 2”) flat and (1.5”, 2”, 2.5”) angled bristles, perfect for tackling any surface painting or staining job.
  • The sturdy natural bristles of each brush are designed to hold more paint, creating a smoother finish with fewer streaks and saving you time on the job.
  • The lightweight wooden handles provide extra comfort and ease during long painting processes like walls, trims, cabinets, and doors.
  • These versatile brushes are ready-to-use, easy to clean, and can be reused multiple times, making them economical as well as reliable tools for any painting project.
  • Bates paint brushes can be used for both oil-based paints as well as latex stains and are ideal for home or commercial projects such as decks, fences or DIY painting jobs.
  1. Build the first and second thin coats using the crossing-stroke and steep-angle skim sequence.
  2. When the plaster has reached the condition specified by the manufacturer, burnish with a clean spatula. The technical instructions describe burnishing while the material is slightly damp when a high gloss is desired.
  3. Use overlapping passes with controlled pressure. Stop if the tool begins pulling material or exposing the substrate.
  4. If water resistance is required, apply only the wax, soap or beeswax product and number of coats allowed by the current data sheet. An older product sheet describes one or two coats; confirm that direction for the product you actually purchased.

Burnishing is not simply “rubbing harder.” It compresses the surface and changes sheen, so a clean tool and a correctly timed surface are critical.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Sponge-textured fresco

Look: a softly textured, fresco-like surface rather than polished plaster.

Materials: plaster system, base coat, mini sea-sponge roller and finishing tool.

  1. Prepare and coat the base according to the plaster label.
  2. Apply plaster in a thin layer, then use the mini sea-sponge roller to create the documented sponge texture.
  3. Allow the texture to dry as directed. Do not burnish it as though it were a high-gloss finish; the sponge pattern is the defining surface.
  4. Apply any final skim or protective treatment only if the current product instructions call for it.

This approach is distinct from polished Venetian plaster: the sponge creates the texture, while burnishing would compress and alter that texture.

9. Pattern coat with a tight skim

Look: recessed and raised plaster movement with a more unified final surface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Materials: plaster, roller, mini sea-sponge roller, plaster spatula or trowel and any approved protective finish.

  1. Roll the plaster onto the prepared surface if the product data sheet permits rolling.
  2. Use the mini sea-sponge roller to create a pattern coat while the material is workable.
  3. After the pattern coat dries or reaches the specified stage, apply a final tight skim coat to fill recessed areas without erasing all relief.
  4. Refine edges and high spots with a clean spatula.
  5. For areas needing water resistance, use only the protective treatment approved for that plaster. A product data sheet describes acrylic wax, soap or beeswax as possible options, but current compatibility must be confirmed.

This recipe gives more control over how much texture remains visible than a single sponge pass. Practice the pressure on a panel: an aggressive skim can flatten the pattern, while a light skim leaves deep recesses.

Choosing the right finish for your room

Desired result Most suitable options Primary tool Layer complexity Main risk
Soft color movement Brushed, sponge or hand-softened color wash Brush, sponge or glazing mitt Primer, base and translucent glaze Lap marks or overly heavy glaze
Reflective patterned wall Sponge-textured or dense metallic impression Sea-sponge mini roller Base, metallic layer and decorative glaze Missing the product-specific working window or hiding the metallic layer
Subtle mineral texture Matte Venetian plaster or sponge-textured fresco Spatula, trowel or sponge roller One or more thin plaster coats Uneven thickness and unintended ridges
High sheen Burnished polished plaster Clean spatula or trowel Layered plaster plus timed burnishing Burnishing too early, too late or with a dirty tool
Visible relief with a unified surface Pattern coat with tight skim Mini sea-sponge roller and trowel Rolled or applied plaster, pattern coat and skim Flattening the recesses or leaving them too deep

How many coats and how much drying time should you plan for?

There is no single schedule for faux finishes. Color washing normally involves a primed surface, a base color and a translucent glaze. The metallic example adds a metallic layer and a decorative glaze, with the cited system’s approximately 15-minute brushing-through window. Plaster methods use thin coats, drying intervals and, in some cases, a final skim or protective coat.

Read the label before you start each stage and write the permitted recoat condition on your sample-panel notes. Temperature, humidity, airflow, film thickness and substrate absorbency can change drying behavior. Never extend the metallic timing or assume a plaster that feels dry on top is ready for burnishing.

Common problems and fixes

The wall looks patchy instead of softly varied

The glaze may be too opaque, too heavily loaded or allowed to dry in isolated patches. On the next section, reduce the load, work smaller areas and maintain a connected wet edge. If the product allows blending, soften marks while the glaze remains workable; do not add an unapproved thinner.

The sponge pattern repeats visibly

Rotate the sponge or mini roller, vary overlap and avoid beginning every pass at the same height. A sample panel reveals repetition sooner than a full wall.

The metallic finish looks dull

Check whether the metallic layer is actually present and whether the decorative glaze has been applied too heavily. Metallic reflections also depend on viewing angle and lighting. Do not judge the final effect from one position or before the coating has dried.

Plaster shows ridges, chips or exposed substrate

Thin coats and a clean tool reduce ridges. Allow the coat to reach the product’s specified stage before skimming or burnishing. Repair defects only with a compatible material; adding a random topcoat can change adhesion and sheen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The protective finish changes the color

Wax, soap, beeswax and acrylic products can alter sheen and deepen color. Test the complete system, including protection, on the sample panel. Use a protective coat only where the current product documentation permits it and where the room’s exposure justifies it.

Maintenance and long-term expectations

Maintenance instructions belong to the coating system, not merely to the decorative pattern. Ask the product maker whether the cured surface can be wiped, which cleaners are permitted and whether a wax or sealer must be renewed. High-relief plaster collects more dust than a smooth wash, while a reflective metallic surface can reveal fingerprints or uneven cleaning. Keep leftover product labeled with the color, batch and wall location for future touch-ups.

A practical decision checklist

  • Choose the appearance first: translucent movement, metallic reflection, sponge texture, matte plaster or polished sheen.
  • Confirm that the primer, base, glaze, metallic coating and plaster are compatible.
  • Buy the tool that creates the pattern: brush, sponge, sea-sponge mini roller, glazing mitt or trowel.
  • Build and photograph a sample panel under the room’s normal lighting.
  • Record each product’s coat, drying and recoat instructions before starting the wall.
  • Plan a continuous working sequence so adjoining sections do not dry with hard edges.
  • Apply wax or another protective treatment only when the current technical sheet approves it.
