The right sawhorse plan depends on the work: build a fixed 2×4 pair for a first project, choose stackable horses for a repeat-use shop, use folding legs when storage space is tight, or cut a knockdown plywood pair when flat storage matters most. The nine designs below are not interchangeable. Their lumber, hardware, dimensions, and level of documentation differ, and none has a common, tested load rating.
Only The Home Depot gives a project-time estimate—under two hours for its specific stackable design. That estimate does not apply to the other plans, and it is not a promise that every pair can be completed in one weekend.

What to decide before cutting lumber
Choose fixed, stackable, folding or knockdown construction
Fixed-leg horses are the least complicated to store and usually the easiest starting point. Stackable frames occupy less floor space when several pairs are nested. Folding models trade some assembly complexity for faster setup and slimmer storage. A knockdown plywood design comes apart and stores nearly flat, which is useful in a small garage or when transporting the pair.
Set a working height without guessing at a rating
None of the listed sources establishes a universal “correct” sawhorse height or a shared load limit. Use the dimensions supplied by the selected plan, or mock up the top at your intended working height before changing anything. A change to a leg length, top beam or support can require corresponding changes to gussets, crossmembers, hinge positions or interlocking slots. Treat “heavy-duty” as the plan’s name, not as a tested capacity.

Gather only the materials your plan calls for
- Most of the all-wood designs use 2×4 lumber and screws, but the exact board count and cut lengths vary.
- Folding plans add hinges; the MyOutdoorPlans version also adds a 1/2-inch plywood shelf.
- The knockdown plan uses a single 4-by-8-foot sheet of 3/4-inch plywood rather than a collection of boards.
- The STIHL Australia design uses screws plus carriage bolts, nuts and washers.
For tools, the DIYProjects plan specifically lists a drill and bits, miter saw, clamps and measuring tools. Do not assume that every design has the same tool requirements.
Build and inspect safely
STIHL Australia recommends native softwood for its own project and advises avoiding waste wood or pallet material. That guidance is tied to that firewood-sawhorse design; inspect lumber and fasteners for every project. Before use, place the completed pair on a level surface, check that all legs sit firmly, tighten hardware and follow the selected plan’s fastening details. Do not stand on a sawhorse or use one as a scaffold unless a plan supplies credible, applicable engineering data—which these sources do not.

Construct101’s fixed-leg design is the clearest starting point when you want a conventional pair with a straightforward cut list. Its listed shopping list is five 8-foot 2×4 boards. The cut list turns that stock into fourteen 32-inch pieces, assembled with 3-inch deck screws. The page includes measurements, illustrations, a shopping list, a cut list and a free PDF: Construct101’s Sawhorse Plans.
Plan the cuts before opening the lumber bundle, label the pieces and keep the two horses’ legs matched. Because the source supplies the dimensions and diagrams, use those drawings for the exact leg angles, top assembly and screw locations rather than substituting measurements from another plan.
2. Stackable 2×4 sawhorses
The Home Depot’s stackable project is aimed at beginners and estimates less than two hours for this specific build. It calls for five 2×4×8 boards and screws. The workflow is organized around building the legs, adding gussets and crossmembers, assembling an I-beam and attaching the legs. The guide describes a setup in which a sheet of 3/4-inch plywood can span a pair of these horses. That is a description of the illustrated arrangement, not a universal load rating for the horses or the plywood.

3. Folding sawhorse with a shelf
MyOutdoorPlans’ folding design adds a useful shelf beneath a hinged frame. The listed parts include 28-inch 2×4 legs, 36-inch supports and a 36-inch top beam, a 1/2-inch plywood shelf, screws and hinges. See the complete diagrams at MyOutdoorPlans’ folding sawhorse plans.
The page says its dimensions can be adjusted. Make changes only after checking every connected measurement: the hinge locations, leg spread, shelf supports and top alignment all depend on the original geometry. Dry-fit the folding action before final screw tightening so the legs open without binding.
4. Knockdown plywood pair
When a pair must travel or store flat, Construct101’s knockdown design uses interlocking pieces cut from one 4-by-8-foot sheet of 3/4-inch plywood. The single-sheet approach can simplify material planning, but the slots and mirrored parts make cutting accuracy especially important. Open Construct101’s knockdown sawhorse plans and verify the drawings and cutting sequence before buying plywood or making the first cut.
Label every part as it comes off the sheet. Test the interlocks without force; if a joint needs hammering, stop and check the cut line rather than relying on fasteners to pull it into alignment.

5. Heavy-duty 2×4 sawhorse from Ana White
Ana White publishes free plans for an all-2×4 sawhorse described as heavy duty: Easy Heavy Duty 2×4 Sawhorses. This is a useful choice if you want a conventional timber build and prefer a detailed published plan over designing the framing yourself.
The source cautions that changing dimensions can affect multiple measurements. Follow its cut and shopping lists, recheck each piece before assembly and do not infer a capacity from the “heavy-duty” label. No independent load test or rated capacity is supplied here.
6. Simple compact sawhorse
DIYProjects presents a compact, basic build for readers who want a small shop stand and are comfortable adapting dimensions. The listed equipment is a drill, bits, miter saw, clamps, measuring tools and wood screws. The build is described at DIYProjects’ How to Make a Sawhorse.
The page allows dimension changes, but an alteration is a redesign rather than a single cut adjustment. Keep paired legs equal, preserve the relationship between the top and braces and recalculate any mating parts before cutting. Clamp the frame while checking square so the compact footprint does not turn into a rocking stand.

Purdue Extension’s 4-H woodworking PDF includes a traditional sawhorse entry calling for sound 2×4 lumber: Purdue Extension Woodworking Plans (PDF). The available extract does not show enough of the drawing or directions to reproduce its dimensions responsibly in an article.
Use the PDF as the authority for the original proportions, joints and cut list. Confirm that you can read the complete drawing before purchasing stock; if a dimension is unclear, do not fill it in from another plan.
9. Alternate folding plan with a wider top
A separate Famous Artisan result describes a folding frame made from 2×4 lumber with a 2×6 top and hinges. The wider top is intended to provide more clamping surface while retaining portability. It is a plan lead rather than a fully checked set of instructions, so verify the original page, all dimensions and the complete cut list before treating it as build-ready.
No load rating is established for this design. Check that the hinge hardware, leg spread and top attachment match the final dimensions you actually build.

How to choose among the plans
For a first pair
Start with the Construct101 fixed-leg plan if you want the most explicit shopping and cut information, or use The Home Depot stackable guide if nesting storage matters and its step sequence suits your tools.
For a small garage
Choose the MyOutdoorPlans folding model or the Construct101 knockdown plywood pair. Folding legs keep the frame assembled for quick setup; knockdown parts store flatter but demand accurate sheet cutting.

The wider 2×6-top folding concept offers more top surface, while The Home Depot guide specifically illustrates a 3/4-inch plywood sheet spanning its pair. Neither statement is a universal structural rating.
For firewood cutting
Use the STIHL Australia instructions only within the project context they describe, including their fastener and timber guidance. Do not transfer assumptions about strength to unrelated plans.
