The right driveway is a site decision, not just a colour or texture choice. Start with slope, soil, drainage route, vehicle weight and frequency, accessibility, local rules and maintenance capacity; then choose among loose gravel, grid-contained gravel, grass tracks, asphalt, porous asphalt, concrete, pervious concrete, permeable pavers and turf blocks.
For a low-complexity informal entrance, well-edged gravel may work on a gently sloping site. For rain-sensitive sites, a properly designed permeable system can keep water moving through the driveway instead of sending it directly toward a drain or neighbouring property. Heavy traffic, wheelchair access, steep grades and frequent parking narrow the choices. The sections below explain what each system requires and where it can fail.

A driveway performs as a system. The visible surface is only the top layer; excavation, sub-base, compaction, edge restraint, drainage and maintenance determine whether it remains usable. Ask these questions before requesting quotes:
- How steep is the approach? Loose material can move downhill and erode. The UK government’s 2009 guidance says loose gravel is unsuitable for steeply sloped drives.
- Where will stormwater go? Impermeable asphalt or standard concrete can send runoff to a drain, road or neighbouring land. A permeable surface still needs a suitable underlying layer and a planned outlet or infiltration area.
- Who must use it? Loose gravel is difficult for many wheelchair users and can be awkward for walking aids, bicycles and wheeled bins. Smooth, stable surfaces generally provide easier rolling.
- What loads are expected? A family car, delivery van, trailer or commercial vehicle require different structural design. Portland municipal guidance specifically recommends professional design when traffic exceeds ordinary residential-driveway use.
- How much upkeep is realistic? Gravel needs raking and topping up; planted systems need mowing and watering; permeable pavements need debris control so pores do not clog.
- What does your authority require? Planning and drainage rules vary by country, state, city and sometimes property. Check before excavation.
Nine options compared
| Option | Water behaviour | Best-fit conditions | Main cautions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Loose gravel | Naturally open between stones | Informal, gently sloping residential drives | Can scatter or form waves; poor for steep slopes and wheelchair access |
| Gravel with stabilization grid | Open surface when the base and grid are designed to drain | Homeowners wanting a contained gravel appearance | Grid rating, base, edging and drainage must be specified; it does not solve every site problem |
| Grass wheel tracks | Much of the area remains planted or unsealed | Light-to-moderate use where a green appearance matters | Grass can die under parked vehicles; mowing and species selection are required |
| Conventional asphalt | Generally impermeable | Smooth access and frequent vehicle use | Runoff and heat retention; local drainage provisions may apply |
| Porous asphalt | Designed to pass water into a drainage layer | Residential drives with a properly engineered permeable base | Clogs if sediment and leaves are neglected; not the same as ordinary asphalt |
| Conventional concrete | Generally impermeable unless a separate drainage design is provided | Durable, low-routine-maintenance hardstanding when correctly designed | Cracking, staining, runoff, heat and resource impacts; sealing can reduce permeability |
| Pervious concrete | Porous concrete drains through connected voids | Sites designed by installers familiar with permeable concrete | Requires correct mix, base and maintenance; standard concrete practice is not interchangeable |
| Permeable block pavers | Water passes through joints or porous units into a gravel reservoir | Driveways needing a modular, repairable finish | Joint and base design are critical; soil and debris can block flow |
| Turf blocks | Openings hold soil and vegetation, with infiltration through the system | Occasional or lighter parking where a planted look is wanted | Vegetation needs care and may fail under continuous parking |
There is no reliable, location-neutral price ladder for these systems. Obtain local, itemised quotations rather than assuming that one material is always cheapest.

1. Loose gravel
Loose gravel is a straightforward surface made from spread aggregate over a prepared base. UK government guidance describes it as simple to construct, with readily available materials, and London Fire Brigade guidance presents gravel as a low-cost permeable choice. The same UK guidance states, “Gravel will scatter or form waves.” That movement creates ruts, bare patches and stone migration onto paths or roads.
Use a properly compacted sub-base, a defined edge and a thickness suited to the expected traffic. Periodic raking redistributes stones; topping up may be needed after storms or snow clearing. Gravel is a poor choice on a steep approach and for wheelchair users according to the 2009 English guidance. A level turning area can also be difficult to keep even if vehicles repeatedly pivot in one place.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2. Gravel held in a stabilization grid
A recycled-plastic or similar grid confines aggregate in cells, reducing lateral movement while retaining a gravel appearance. London Fire Brigade identifies grids as a way to hold gravel in place. Treat the grid as an accessory to a gravel system, not as a separate drainage solution.
Ask the installer or manufacturer to document the grid’s vehicle-load rating, cell depth, compatible aggregate, sub-base preparation, edge restraint and outlet or infiltration arrangement. Those specifications vary by product and were not established by the cited guidance. A grid cannot correct a weak base, an eroding slope or water flowing across the site from elsewhere. It may improve stability, but accessibility still depends on the finished aggregate surface and how firmly it is compacted.
3. Planted grass wheel tracks
Two paved strips under the tyres can limit the amount of hard surfacing while leaving planting between and beside the tracks. UK government guidance describes this arrangement and notes that the grass species should suit the system and location. It also says mowing may be needed and that grass can die if vehicles remain parked for long periods.
Wheel tracks can give an entrance a softer appearance and, according to that guidance, may reduce heat, dust, pollution and noise compared with more extensive hard surfacing; these are stated potential benefits, not measured outcomes for every site. Design the track width for the vehicles you actually use, provide a stable walking route if needed, and plan how rain will move across the planted areas. This option is better for intermittent parking than for a driveway that stays occupied continuously.

4. Conventional asphalt
Conventional asphalt provides a continuous, smooth surface that is relatively quick to lay and commonly selected for high-traffic access. A 2021 Homebuilding.co.uk comparison describes those practical advantages while noting that ordinary asphalt is generally impermeable and can retain heat.
Because water does not normally pass through the finished surface, the design must direct runoff to an approved drain, swale, permeable margin or other outlet. Asphalt can be comfortable for rolling and easy to clear of snow and leaves, but repairs may be visible and standing water can expose failures in the base. Specify excavation depth, sub-base, surface thickness, edge support and drainage in the quotation; the material name alone does not define performance.
5. Porous asphalt
Porous asphalt looks similar to ordinary asphalt but is formulated and installed as part of a permeable pavement system. GOV.UK lists porous asphalt among hard permeable surfaces, and Portland’s municipal guidance lists it as suitable for residential driveways in its comparison.
The open surface must sit over a correctly graded, clean drainage layer that stores and releases water. Soil type, groundwater, slope and the location of nearby foundations determine whether infiltration is appropriate or whether an underdrain is needed. Leaves, mud and swept-in soil gradually block the voids, so remove debris with methods approved for the installed system. Calling a conventional asphalt driveway “porous” because it has cracks or a coarse finish is not equivalent to designing porous asphalt.

6. Conventional concrete
Standard poured concrete offers a firm, continuous surface and can be relatively low maintenance when designed and installed correctly. The 2021 editorial comparison also flags runoff, heat, resource use, staining and cracking as considerations. Its discussion of durability and service life is editorial framing, not a guaranteed lifespan for every driveway.
Ordinary concrete is not automatically permeable. Plan falls, channels and a lawful discharge route where water cannot infiltrate on site. Control joints, reinforcement, sub-base quality and curing affect cracking risk. Ask whether any proposed sealer is compatible with the finish and drainage design: the comparison notes that sealing can reduce permeability, so a sealed surface should not be represented as a permeable one.

7. Pervious concrete
Pervious concrete is a specially designed porous pavement, distinct from standard concrete. GOV.UK includes porous concrete among permeable surfacing options, and Penn State Extension describes porous or permeable concrete as a material intended to let runoff pass through the pavement.
Its performance depends on the concrete mix, placement, curing, open-graded sub-base and soil conditions. A vehicle-bearing pervious-concrete driveway is not a sensible do-it-yourself experiment unless the entire structural and drainage design is professionally specified. Keep leaves, sediment and soil off the surface; clogged pores reduce infiltration. Confirm how the contractor will inspect and restore the system if infiltration slows.

8. Permeable block pavers
Permeable block paving uses specially shaped joints or porous units so water reaches an underlying gravel reservoir. GOV.UK describes permeable block paving and porous blocks; Portland describes permeable pavers with gaps and an underlying reservoir; Penn State Extension lists permeable paving stones as a paving type. Portland’s table identifies pavers as suitable for residential drives.
The blocks are only the visible part of the system. Excavation depth, aggregate gradation, compaction, edge restraint, geotextile decisions, slope and any underdrain must match the soil and rainfall conditions. Modular units can make local repairs less conspicuous because individual blocks can be lifted, but joints can fill with fine material. Prevent soil, mulch and sweepings from washing onto the driveway, and use maintenance equipment recommended for the paver system.
9. Turf blocks
Turf blocks combine load-bearing units with openings filled by soil and planted. Portland municipal guidance lists turf-block systems as suitable for residential driveways. The result can read as a green driveway rather than a fully paved apron, but the planted openings introduce horticultural duties.
Choose a grass or groundcover that matches the local climate, shade and expected traffic. Provide establishment time before regular parking, and plan mowing, watering and reseeding. As the UK guidance warns for planted wheel-track approaches, vegetation may die where vehicles remain parked for long periods. Turf blocks therefore suit occasional or distributed parking better than a permanently occupied space.

How permeable driveways actually manage rain
Permeability is a layered design, not a marketing label. Water must pass through pores or joints, enter a clean underlying aggregate layer, and then infiltrate into the soil or leave through a designed outlet. Clay soil, a high water table, contaminated ground, nearby foundations, excessive slope or sediment from an unprotected area can limit that pathway.
Massachusetts homeowner stormwater guidance notes that permeable pavers can be useful where gravel may erode on steep grades. That does not make every paver system suitable for every slope: the installer still has to calculate falls, provide edge restraint and control concentrated flows. Portland guidance similarly treats porous asphalt, pavers and turf blocks as systems selected for site conditions, not interchangeable surface products.
Installation: what a responsible quote should include
- Site assessment: Measure slope, soil, existing levels, vehicle loads, parking patterns, utilities and where roof or road water currently travels.
- Drainage decision: State whether water will infiltrate, discharge to a drain, flow to a planted area or use an underdrain. Identify any overflow route for extreme storms.
- Excavation and sub-base: List excavation depth, materials, geotextile or separation layers where appropriate, compaction method and testing or inspection.
- Surface specification: Name the exact asphalt mix, concrete type, paver or turf-block system, aggregate size, joint material and finished thickness. For a grid, include its load rating and cell specification.
- Edge and transitions: Show restraints at lawns, walls, garage thresholds, public footways and neighbouring properties so material cannot migrate or water cannot pond.
- Construction controls: Explain how mud, cement washout and loose aggregate will be kept out of drains and adjacent land during the work.
- Handover and maintenance: Provide curing or establishment time, cleaning instructions, inspection intervals, reseeding or topping-up duties and the procedure for clearing a clogged permeable layer.
Maintenance and common failure modes
Runoff or ponding
Water that pools after installation may indicate blocked pores, an undersized outlet, settlement or a grade that was never corrected. Photograph the area during rain, check whether inlets are obstructed, and ask the installer to inspect the base rather than simply adding surface material.
Ruts, waves and migrating gravel
Rake loose gravel back into place, restore the edge and investigate the base or concentrated water flow. If movement continues, a stabilization grid or a different surface may be more appropriate; a grid installed over a failing base will not cure the underlying defect.

Remove leaves and mud promptly and stop soil or sand from being washed onto the driveway. Do not apply an impermeable coating to solve a clogging problem without confirming compatibility, because sealing can reduce permeability.
Cracks and broken edges
For concrete or asphalt, identify whether cracks follow joints, utility trenches, edges or broad settlement. Filling the visible crack without correcting water entry or base movement often produces a temporary repair. Keep heavy vehicles off newly placed surfaces until the contractor’s stated curing period has passed.

Dead grass in planted systems
Check parking duration, shade, compaction, irrigation and species suitability. Replanting without changing the traffic pattern usually repeats the failure.
Which option fits the question you are asking?
“What is the cheapest driveway option?”
Loose gravel is described by UK government and London Fire Brigade guidance as a simple or low-cost approach, but no current, comparable installed-price data establishes a universal winner. Compare itemised local quotes that include excavation, sub-base, edging, drainage, labour and future maintenance. A low surface price can disappear if difficult access, poor soil or drainage work is excluded.
“Which driveway material handles rain best?”
A designed permeable system—porous asphalt, pervious concrete, permeable pavers or turf blocks—can provide a route for water, but only when the underlying layer and outlet suit the site. Conventional asphalt and concrete generally require positive drainage to another location.
“Can I use gravel on a sloped driveway?”
Do not assume so. The cited English guidance says loose gravel is unsuitable for steeply sloped drives, and Massachusetts guidance highlights permeable pavers where gravel may erode. Have a contractor assess the grade, flow path and edge restraints before choosing loose aggregate or a grid.
“Which surface is easiest for wheelchairs?”
Loose gravel is specifically identified as unsuitable for wheelchairs in the 2009 UK guidance. A firm, smooth, well-drained surface such as correctly installed asphalt, concrete or tightly jointed pavers is generally easier to roll on, but crossfall, thresholds and transitions matter as much as the material.
“Do I need planning permission?”
The GOV.UK guidance cited here dates from 2009 and concerns English front-garden planning rules. It says a permeable surface, or directing water to a permeable area, can avoid permission under the described permitted-development rules, while some impermeable projects may require it. Wales has separate guidance, and other countries and jurisdictions have their own requirements. Confirm the current rule with your local planning and drainage authority before work starts.
A practical way to make the final choice
Rule out systems that conflict with your slope, accessibility or runoff requirements first. Then compare the remaining options on appearance, vehicle loading, construction disruption, routine care and repairability. Require every bidder to price the same scope and to show the drainage route on a sketch. The best driveway is the one whose complete system—surface, base, edges and water management—matches the way your property is actually used.
