Only one of the nine brands in this showcase is documented here as having a logo that directly depicts a cat: PUMA, whose jumping-puma mark dates to 1967–68. The list also includes Jaguar and six pet brands commonly described as using feline imagery, but their current logo designs are not independently verified by the sources available for this article. Caterpillar belongs for a different reason: its name came from a comparison to a tractor’s moving treads, not a cat illustration.
Which nine brands are in the showcase?
The original list names PUMA, Jaguar, Caterpillar (Cat), Whiskas, Friskies, Purina, Meow Mix, Felix, and Tidy Cats. They are useful examples of how brands can be associated with cats in different ways, but that association does not mean every current logo visibly depicts one.
| Brand | How it relates to the cat theme | What is established here |
|---|---|---|
| PUMA | Direct animal mark | PUMA’s corporate history says its modern logo is a jumping-cat design, created in December 1967 and officially introduced as a trademark in 1968. PUMA’s corporate history |
| Jaguar | Big-cat emblem, as described by the original showcase | The showcase includes Jaguar, but a primary source verifying the current logo design was not available. |
| Caterpillar (Cat) | Name association | The name refers to a tractor tread compared to a caterpillar; the company’s Cat product brand is not evidence of a cat drawing in its logo. Caterpillar company history · Caterpillar brand overview |

PUMA: a documented jumping-cat logo
PUMA’s history gives a specific origin for its modern cat mark. The first version was created in December 1967; the trademark was officially introduced in 1968. The company credits caricaturist Lutz Backes, who went to Nuremberg Zoo to sketch a puma. When the animal did not jump, he watched a black panther’s agility and combined that movement with a puma’s head, tail, and paws. PUMA says the logo soon appeared on its products and has changed subtly over time. PUMA’s corporate history

The story explains why the mark reads as a powerful, airborne animal rather than a detailed portrait. Rudolf Dassler described the traits the company wanted to evoke as “Strength, endurance and speed.”

Caterpillar: a name story, not a cat illustration
Caterpillar is an important qualification in a list about cat logos. The company’s official history traces its name to photographer Charlie Clemens, who saw a tractor moving across soggy fields and compared its undulating tread motion to a “monster caterpillar.” When Holt and Best merged in 1925, the name Caterpillar followed. The company’s early “Wavy Logo” was used from 1925 to 1931. Caterpillar company history
A separate company timeline says Cat began appearing on machines in 1950 and records subsequent changes to product trade dress. Caterpillar distinguishes its corporate identity from Cat, its flagship brand of products and services. That makes Cat a memorable wordmark and brand name, but it should not be described as a drawing of a domestic cat without evidence of such a design. Caterpillar timeline · Caterpillar brand overview

What makes a cat logo work as a painting or design?
For artists studying these marks, the most useful comparison is not simply “which brands have cats?” It is how a design communicates an animal at a glance, and whether it remains clear in different applications. The suggestions below are practical design guidance, not measured claims about recognition or sales.

Start with a recognizable silhouette
Block in the outside contour before adding eyes, fur, or markings. A distinctive pose—such as a leap, crouch, or arched back—can carry the idea with fewer details. Check whether the outline still reads when reduced to a small label or simplified to a single color.
Choose detail to suit the use
A realistic face can suit a large illustration, but small packaging or merchandise may require a simpler shape. If the design depends on whiskers, tiny eyes, or fine stripes, test it at the smallest intended size. Remove details that disappear or crowd together rather than assuming more detail will make the animal clearer.
Use color as support, not as the only clue
Color can establish mood and help a mark stand out, but the design should still be identifiable in monochrome or against a different background. Test both light and dark versions, and make sure the animal’s edge does not disappear into the surrounding shape.

Keep the style consistent across contexts
A logo may appear on a package, a website, or merchandise. Consider how the same visual idea adapts to each surface without changing its essential silhouette or style. A mismatch between an ornate illustration and a very compact application can make the identity harder to use.
Are cat logos always about actual cats?
No. A logo can depict an animal directly, use an animal as a metaphor, or merely share a word with one. PUMA is the clearest direct-cat example documented here. Caterpillar’s name arose from a comparison between a tractor tread and a caterpillar; that history does not establish a feline image in the company’s logo. The other brands in the list are described as feline-themed by the original showcase, but their present-day marks and histories are not verified here by primary sources.
