The easiest way to make guests comfortable is to remove small points of friction: give them obvious access to water, cups, ice, snacks, charging and a place to settle in. Brooke Christen’s August 3, 2026 article, “9 Things I’m So Glad I Have on Hand When Hosting,” turns that idea into nine practical categories. They are personal hosting habits rather than required purchases or independently tested product recommendations, so use the list as a flexible setup plan for your home, patio and budget.
Christen captures the purpose well: “Hosting has never been about having a perfect house or the fanciest decorations. For me, it’s about creating a space where people feel comfortable enough to stay awhile, grab another cookie, refill their water, and enjoy being together.”

1. A self-serve water station
Cold water is one of the first things arriving guests look for, yet hosts often end up leaving the conversation to refill glasses. Christen keeps a countertop water-filter dispenser ready. In her August 2026 article, she says it holds 2.5 gallons of purified water, looks decorative enough to leave on the counter and can be taken outdoors so guests can pour their own cold filtered water. Those capacity and performance details are her report, not an independent test; availability and specifications can change.
Set the dispenser where people naturally pause, such as near the kitchen entrance, dining table or patio seating. Add a stack of glasses or cups beside it and keep a small towel nearby for drips. If you move it outside, place it on a stable, shaded surface and refill it before guests arrive. A pitcher, beverage urn or tap-water carafe can serve the same self-serve purpose if a filtered dispenser does not fit your space.

The article reports code GRACE for 15% off that dispenser at publication. Treat that as a dated offer from August 3, 2026, and check the seller before relying on it; the current discount was not independently confirmed.
2. Vintage plate chargers with easy-clean plates
Chargers create the visual weight of a composed table without requiring special dinnerware. Christen layers vintage chargers under simple paper plates, mostly using thrifted pieces. The charger remains on the table while the disposable plate can be cleared quickly after the meal, giving you a decorative setting with less washing.
For a mixed collection, keep the palette coherent through one element—similar metal tones, a repeated color or a consistent shape—rather than trying to make every charger match. Check thrifted pieces for chips, sharp edges and surfaces that are difficult to wipe. Chargers are generally decorative underlayers, not serving dishes, so keep hot or wet food on plates or bowls designed for it.
Put the chargers out before guests arrive, then add the paper plates at the last moment so they stay clean. This arrangement works for a backyard barbecue, birthday buffet or casual dinner and lets you reserve your everyday dishes for food that needs them.
3. More ice than you think you need
Ice disappears quickly when drinks are being poured, coolers are opened and warm dishes are carried outdoors. Christen keeps extra ice available with two different approaches: a countertop ice maker outside and an under-counter ice maker at home. Her article notes that an under-counter installation may require a drain depending on the setup. That is not a universal requirement; consult the installation instructions for the exact model and your plumbing arrangement.

- THREE SIZES FOR ANY GATHERING — This serving platter set includes a 16-inch platter that serves 15-20 guests (holds a whole turkey, large roast, or full appetizer spread), a 14-inch platter for 8-12 guests (fruit platter, cheese board, salad), and a 12-inch platter for 4-6 guests (desserts, bread, small appetizers). You get all three party sizes in one box instead of buying separately.
- HIGH-FIRED PORCELAIN — Fired above 1600°F for a denser, harder body. Porcelain won't craze (develop tiny cracks) over time, resists chips, and the smooth glaze won't absorb food stains from tomato sauce, curry, or wine. Each serving platter weighs 2-3.5 lbs — sturdy enough to carry a loaded turkey without flexing.
- SAFE FOR OVEN (600°F), MICROWAVE, DISHWASHER, AND FREEZER — Warm platters in the oven before serving (a restaurant trick that keeps food hot longer). Microwave leftovers directly on the serving platter. Clean in any dishwasher — top or bottom rack. Freeze make-ahead appetizers and go straight to oven. No temperature-change cracking, unlike glass.
- DESIGNED FOR ENTERTAINING — Whether you're hosting Mother's day brunch, Thanksgiving dinner, a birthday buffet, a bridal shower, BBQ cookout, or a casual charcuterie night, these white porcelain serving trays match any table setting and any theme. The timeless rectangular shape presents food beautifully and fits standard buffet tables and dining room tables.
- REINFORCED PACKAGING + FREE REPLACEMENT — Each platter is individually wrapped in foam padding with cardboard dividers inside a double-wall box. If any piece arrives with a crack, chip, or break, send us a photo and we ship a free replacement immediately — no return needed, no cost to you. Also a popular gift for weddings, housewarmings, and Mother's Day.
Choose the storage method around the gathering:
- Short outdoor visits: Make ice ahead and transfer it to an insulated cooler or lidded bin positioned near the drinks.
- Frequent entertaining: A countertop machine can provide batches near the serving area, provided it has ventilation, power and protection from weather.
- Permanent kitchen setup: An under-counter unit keeps production out of sight, but confirm clearance, water supply, drainage and electrical requirements before installation.
Keep a scoop in the ice container rather than letting guests use a glass. Separate ice intended for drinks from ice used to chill sealed bottles or cans.
4. Cups that guests can find without asking
A cup station turns a host-dependent task into a self-serve one. Outdoors, Christen uses a flower pot as a visible holder and says a basket can work as well. Indoors, she suggests an open shelf or counter. The container matters less than making it unmistakably the place for cups.
Put the cups between the water and ice and away from clutter. If you are serving several beverages, use separate stacks or label the area with a small, readable sign. For a large group, set out more cups than the number of expected guests so people can keep track of their own drink without immediately needing another one. Reusable tumblers reduce waste; paper cups simplify cleanup for a very casual gathering.
For an outdoor station, choose a holder with a broad base and keep it under cover so wind, dust and rain do not reach the drinking surfaces. Bring leftover cups inside after the event rather than leaving them exposed overnight.

5. Frozen cookie dough for a fresh batch on demand
Christen bakes one pan of cookies and freezes the remaining dough balls. When guests visit later, she can bake a fresh batch without mixing dough from scratch. This is a make-ahead habit rather than a claim about a particular recipe or baking result.

- Prepare your preferred cookie dough and portion the extra dough into individual balls.
- Arrange the portions on a lined tray with space between them and freeze until firm.
- Transfer the firm dough to a labeled, airtight freezer bag or silicone freezer bag. Mark the dough type and date.
- When needed, place the portions on a baking pan and follow the recipe’s instructions for whether to bake from frozen or thaw first. Add any required extra baking time only as the recipe directs.
Freezing portions separately prevents one large block from becoming difficult to divide. Keep the pan, scoop and oven mitts accessible if cookies are a regular part of your hosting routine. Bake the second batch while guests are visiting so the room smells inviting, or bake ahead and serve at room temperature.
6. A charging spot for phones
One or two accessible phone chargers solve a surprisingly common hosting problem. Guests may need power for a long visit, directions home, a work call or a camera, and they should not have to search behind furniture for an outlet.
Choose a visible location near seating but away from food and drinks. A small tray or basket can keep the cables together, while a short note can identify which connector fits which device. Stock only cables and adapters you actually own; compatibility varies by phone and charger. If the outlet is far from the gathering, use a safe, undamaged extension arrangement that does not cross a walkway.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAsk before moving someone’s device or unplugging a charger. At the end of the event, return the cables to the same container so the station is ready for the next visit.
7. Speakers for low-key background music
Christen plays upbeat music quietly in the background and says her speakers fill the house while running independently of what is playing on her phone. That is her personal experience; capabilities such as multi-room playback, wireless range and independent operation depend on the specific speaker model and setup.

For hosting, prioritize predictable control over maximum volume. Test pairing, placement and volume before guests arrive. Put speakers where sound can spread without pointing directly at a conversation area, and keep outdoor units protected from rain unless they are specifically rated for it. Start the playlist quietly enough that guests do not need to raise their voices. A single background playlist is often simpler than handing control among several phones.
Keep charging cables or a charged battery ready if the speakers are portable. If the connection fails, a locally stored playlist or another playback device gives you a fallback without making music the focus of the gathering.
8. Tablecloths for an instant change of mood
A tablecloth can make the same table feel ready for a holiday meal, birthday or ordinary weeknight dinner. Christen treats it as a simple way to add warmth and establish the mood without buying a full set of matching decorations.
Measure the tabletop before buying or sewing one. Decide whether you want a short drop that stays out of the way at a buffet or a longer drop for a more formal table. For outdoor use, secure the corners so wind cannot pull the cloth into food or onto the ground. Keep a washable everyday option and reserve a more distinctive pattern for celebrations.
Check the care label before the event, especially if the cloth is linen, embroidered or vintage. Lay it out early enough to remove creases and inspect for stains. A cloth also protects the table from minor spills, but place trivets under hot cookware and wipe spills promptly according to the fabric’s care instructions.

9. Chips and salsa for arrivals and surprises
A shelf-stable snack covers the awkward gap between arrival and dinner. Christen keeps chips and salsa available for unexpected guests or anyone who arrives hungry. The combination requires no cooking, plates cleanly and can sit out while you finish other preparations.

Put a bowl, serving spoon and napkins beside them so guests can help themselves without opening cabinets. For a larger group, set out a second bowl rather than creating a single crowded serving point. Offer a mild option when you do not know everyone’s spice preference, then add a hotter salsa separately.
Once opened, follow the salsa label’s refrigeration guidance and discard food that has been left out beyond safe serving limits. If chips are not suitable for your guests, use another ready-to-serve pantry snack that fits their dietary needs; the underlying idea is immediate, low-effort food.
How to turn the nine ideas into a hosting routine
You do not need all nine items, and none requires a perfect house. Choose the conveniences that remove the most work from your particular gathering.
- Set up self-service first: Place water, cups and ice together where guests can see them.
- Prepare the table: Add chargers, a tablecloth and clean plates according to the formality of the meal.
- Stage food: Put out chips and salsa for immediate arrivals, then bake frozen cookie dough when you want a warm treat.
- Support a longer stay: Put chargers and speakers in their intended locations before the doorbell rings.
- Do a safety check: Confirm ice-maker requirements, keep cables out of walkways, protect outdoor equipment and refrigerate perishable leftovers.
These are adaptable habits, not a required shopping list. Thrifted chargers can replace new ones, a basket can replace a dedicated cup holder and a familiar snack can replace chips and salsa. The useful test is whether a guest can find a drink, a bite, music and a place to recharge without interrupting the host.
What to buy—and what to skip
Because Christen’s list is experiential, it does not establish a best product, price, inventory level or universal performance standard. If you shop, compare the details that affect your setup: an ice maker’s capacity and installation needs, a tablecloth’s dimensions and care, charger compatibility for phones, and speaker controls and power options. The article’s linked products and collections may change, and no marketplace listing or current availability is confirmed here.
Start with the item that solves a repeated problem in your home. A self-serve drink station is more valuable than decorative tableware if guests always ask for water; frozen dough is more useful than a speaker if dessert is your hosting bottleneck. Add conveniences gradually rather than buying everything at once.
