A moody den works best when the atmosphere serves a clear activity. Start by deciding whether the room is for reading, films, remote work, family games, drinks, or several of those at once; then use deep color, controlled lighting, tactile materials, and furniture that supports the way people move through it. The nine rooms below, profiled by Alia Akkam for Architectural Digest on March 23, 2023, show how a den can feel intimate without becoming generic or gloomy. Read the original project feature at Architectural Digest’s AD PRO Directory roundup, then adapt the principles to your own room, daylight, and architecture.
Compare the nine rooms before choosing a direction
These projects are not standardized tests, and the source supplies no measurements for brightness, room size, or color performance. The table is an editorial comparison of the design decisions described for each room.

Use the room’s purpose to set the mood
Color decisions become easier when the den has a job. A reading room needs comfortable task light and a place to set a book; a screening room needs sightlines and controlled reflections; a work-and-family room needs surfaces and seating that tolerate switching activities. The examples range from quiet reading to movie watching, remote work, entertaining, and games, so there is no single correct version of a moody den.
Choose one primary activity
Write a one-sentence brief such as “a library that can host two remote workers” or “a basement lounge for films and drinks.” Put that sentence on your paint-sample card. If a proposed finish makes the primary activity harder—glare on a screen, insufficient light for reading, or no clear place for a laptop—change the plan before buying paint.

Plan for secondary uses without neutralizing the room
Jenn Feldman’s library demonstrates that a room can support work, meetings, and family downtime while retaining a strong dark identity. The practical move is to zone the furniture and lighting, not to dilute the palette into beige. A desk can occupy one wall while a reading chair and lamp establish another use.
Nine moody den ideas to adapt
1. Pair soft black with warm, tactile seating
Casagrande Studio used Farrow & Ball Railings, described as a soft black, with vintage chairs and dramatic gold velvet seating. The intended room shifts between quiet reading by the fire and animated discussion. For your version, let the paint supply the visual weight and use one warm, high-touch material—velvet, wool, or a richly finished wood—to keep the room inviting. A black sample should be viewed in the actual room at morning, afternoon, and lamplight; the source does not establish a universal brightness or size benefit for dark paint.

Chroma’s San Francisco room takes cues from Spanish-style architecture, fashion, and a music-video palette. Nordic and Brazilian pieces make the result, in Leann Conquer’s phrase, “comfortably vintage and vanguard.” The transferable lesson is to select a few references rather than buying a matching set. Let the existing architecture determine undertones, then add one contemporary shape beside an older or craft-based piece so the den feels assembled over time.

3. Make a hybrid media room and office feel intentional
Dumais transformed a room first considered as a bedroom into a media-room and home-office hybrid. A slate-blue ceiling, chocolate leather sofa, faux-suede wallpaper, walnut trim, and reeded-glass pocket doors give it a darker counterpoint to the apartment’s lighter rooms while maintaining a connection to the dining area. Paint the ceiling as deliberately as the walls, and use doors or screens to hide work equipment when the room becomes a theater. Kevin Dumais described the initial ambition as the “quintessential movie-watching room with wood-paneled walls”; the finished palette achieves a similar sense of enclosure without requiring literal paneling.
4. Paint a library in one deep color
Jenn Feldman applied Studio Green across a library that also accommodates remote work, family downtime, and informal meetings. The continuous color distinguishes the room from bright, open areas elsewhere in the home. To adapt it, decide whether trim, ceiling, and built-ins should join the wall color or remain a controlled contrast. Use swatches on every surface that will be painted; a color that reads balanced on drywall can shift beside wood shelves, upholstery, or a bright adjoining hall.
5. Hide a drinks area behind books
Kerry Joyce Associates restored a Spanish Revival library with a Persian rug, vintage French coffee table, upholstered chairs, and a bookcase that opens to a bar. Joyce called it a place “for an after-dinner drink, or to read a book.” The idea is less about copying a hidden mechanism than about giving the den a reveal: a cabinet, pocket door, or curtained niche can keep service items out of sight until needed. Keep the paint quiet enough that the books, rug, and architectural details remain legible.

6. Wrap a basement in green for a social-club feeling
Magdalena Keck used green on the walls, ceiling, and drapes of an East Hampton basement entertainment lounge and bar. The goal was an updated, minimal interpretation of a bygone social club, with an enveloping feeling of warmth and decadence. A single color across vertical and overhead surfaces can make a basement feel purposeful rather than leftover space. Before committing, inspect the color under the room’s actual fixtures and note how it interacts with the fabric selected for the drapes.
7. Lean into aubergine, gloss, and mirrors in a dark cellar
Liz MacPhail Interiors did not try to disguise the lack of natural light in a Dallas showhouse wine cellar and lounge. Walls and ceilings received high-gloss aubergine, while ambient lighting and antique mirrors added reflected light and drama. Mixed chairs and a corner banquette support tastings and conversation. High gloss is a deliberate visual choice, not a universal solution: it can emphasize surface imperfections and reflections. Prepare the substrate carefully, test the sheen under every fixture, and use mirrors where they reflect useful light rather than an unattractive view.
8. Let furniture solve an awkward family-room shape
Rembaum Design arranged a low-light Scarsdale family room for television and games with swivel chairs and a carefully angled sofa. Sharon Rembaum said that making a space dark can “often make it feel bigger”; that is her design perspective, not a measured result established by the source. The dependable lesson is spatial: place the screen first, mark the viewing angles, and choose seats that can turn toward people as well as the television. Dark paint should support that plan, never substitute for it.

9. Create a low-stimulation “shade room”
Olivia Song Design combined traditional Park Avenue architecture with contemporary furnishings for a family room intended to lower visual stimulation and support relaxation. Ambient lighting and the “shade room” concept carry the atmosphere. Keep the palette restrained, conceal cables and visual clutter, and use dimmable fixtures so the room can shift from daytime family use to evening calm. The source describes the intended atmosphere as supporting physical and mental calm; it does not claim a clinical effect.

Start with a controlled palette
Deep blue, green, black, and purple all appear in the nine projects. Choose the family that supports the room’s materials: slate blue can sit beside walnut and leather; green can reinforce drapery or a library; aubergine can make a cellar feel theatrical; soft black can frame warm metallics and firelight. These are design relationships, not rules about how a color will affect every room.
Sample the whole composition
Paint large sample boards, or test several generous patches where walls, ceiling, trim, and upholstery meet. View them with curtains open, curtains closed, and the room’s evening lamps on. Record the paint name, sheen, date, and location on the back of each board so a later touch-up does not become guesswork. The source names Railings and Studio Green but does not provide a universal formula for choosing between them.

Decide whether the ceiling joins the walls
Several projects use the ceiling as an active part of the mood: Dumais selected a slate-blue ceiling, Keck carried green overhead, and MacPhail used aubergine on both walls and ceiling. A continuous treatment can create a more enveloping envelope; a contrasting ceiling can preserve height or emphasize trim. Make the decision after testing the color above eye level, where fixture light may make it read differently.
Use gloss strategically
MacPhail’s high-gloss aubergine is the clearest example of sheen as a design element. Gloss can increase visible reflections and draw attention to preparation quality, while lower sheens generally recede more quietly. Match the finish to the wall condition, cleaning needs, and amount of direct light, and ask the paint manufacturer for the current application guidance for the product you buy.

Light a moody den without flattening it
Dark color does not remove the need for useful light. Layer the room so each activity has an appropriate source: a reading or work light near the chair or desk, low-level lamps for conversation, and dimmable ambient fixtures for evening transitions. In the Dallas cellar, ambient lighting and antique mirrors were paired with the dark finish; in the Park Avenue room, ambient light supports the shade-room concept. Treat mirrors as directional tools: place one where it can reflect a fixture or a brighter surface, not where it creates glare on a television.
Arrange seating and circulation before painting
Use painter’s tape on the floor to mark the sofa, chairs, banquette, desk, and clear walking paths. Swivel chairs, as used by Rembaum, can serve both a screen and a conversation group. A corner banquette, as in MacPhail’s lounge, concentrates seating without blocking the center. In a hybrid room, leave enough reach for power and work surfaces before committing to built-ins or heavy upholstery. If the den connects to a dining room or bright open area, as Dumais’s room does, decide whether the dark palette should act as a deliberate threshold or continue a color already visible from the adjoining space.
A practical painting sequence
- Write the activity brief. Name the primary use and two secondary uses.
- Map daylight and fixtures. Note where sunlight enters and where lamps, sconces, screens, or mirrors will sit.
- Gather finish samples. Test the chosen deep color on walls, ceiling, trim, and any built-ins that will share it.
- Resolve furniture geometry. Tape the footprint, verify viewing and conversation angles, and keep circulation clear.
- Prepare surfaces. Clean, repair, sand, and prime as required by the paint manufacturer, especially before a reflective finish.
- Paint in a controlled order. Complete ceiling and high areas first, then walls, trim, and built-ins according to your product’s recoat instructions.
- Reassess at night. Install or position the actual lamps, dim them, and check for glare, dead corners, and areas that need task light.
The strongest precedent across these nine rooms is not a particular paint color. It is the coordination of use, envelope, light, texture, and furniture so the den feels intentionally separate from the rest of the home while still belonging to it.
