The best open kitchen is not just attractive from the sofa; it lets people cook, store equipment, move through the room and talk without competing for the same space. An open-plan kitchen has no wall separating it from the living room or lounge, so its finishes, lighting and clutter are visible beyond the kitchen itself. Use the nine ideas below to create clear work and social zones while keeping the larger room visually connected.
What makes an open kitchen work?
Open-plan design connects the kitchen with a dining or living area instead of enclosing it behind a separating wall. IKEA’s guide to open-plan kitchen design describes that connection as a way to keep the cook involved with household members or guests. The trade-off is exposure: dirty dishes, overflowing bins and harsh lighting can affect the adjoining room, while a well-planned kitchen can act as its visual anchor.

Start by mapping the room as one shared environment. Mark the main route between entrances, the dining table, living seating and any exterior door. Then identify where food will be stored, prepared, cooked, served and cleared away. The following ideas are options, not rules; an island, a particular light fitting or a seating counter only earns its place when it supports those routes and tasks.
1. Use an island as a flexible anchor
A fixed island can gather several functions in one legible form: preparation surface, storage, casual seating, dining or a visual boundary between kitchen and living space. HGTV identifies those as possible island roles, but the island is not automatically the right answer for every room.
#1 Best Overall
- Quality & Durability: Our kitchen island’s top plate uses high-quality solid rubber wood, and it has a frame made of durable MDF, which makes it long-lasting for years to come. The top features are anti-dirt and waterproof.
- Convenient Storage: The kitchen island with storage provides ample storage space with its drawers, cabinets, and racks, making it easy to keep your kitchen organized. Drawer for storing utensils and dinnerware; Spice rack and towel holder for added convenience; Cabinet for accessing your microwave, toaster, and other small appliances; Doors keep your space tidy and clean.
- Lockable Wheels for Mobility: Its four swivel casters can be easily moved around the kitchen, making it convenient to use wherever you need it. If you want to keep island stationery, these lockable casters give you the option. You can use the towel rack as a handle to help you move easily.
- Well-Designed Details: Are you ready to adapt! The shelves can be adjusted at 32mm intervals along the entire unit. You can raise or lower them to accommodate various kitchen items! The thickness of the board has been upgraded to 5mm for more stable load-bearing. Smooth drawer glides can prevent the drawers from falling out. The golden handle provides a better user experience.
- Versatile Functionality: This white kitchen island is an innovative and efficient solution for smaller kitchens or dining spaces, maximizing the use of your room. It can also be used as a kitchen island, bar cart, or mobile coffee station. In addition, it is easy to install with suitable accessories and installation videos.
Match the island to the room
Decide its primary job before choosing its shape. A cook who needs more preparation area may gain more from an uninterrupted worktop than from stools. A household that eats quick breakfasts at the island may need a seating overhang and clear knee space. If the island is mainly a boundary, orient its storage and finishes toward the kitchen so the living side remains calm.
Check circulation before committing
Use the room’s actual dimensions and routes rather than a standard island template. Open doors, appliance doors, chairs and people carrying hot food all compete for the same floor area. Tape the proposed footprint on the floor and walk the route at busy times of day. If the taped island makes the kitchen feel like a corridor, reduce it, change its position or choose a mobile alternative.
2. Choose a movable trolley when flexibility matters
A wheeled serving trolley or mobile kitchen island can add worktop and storage without permanently changing the room. IKEA presents this as a practical option when a fixed installation does not suit the available space or when the household’s needs change.
Give the cart a parking place
Mobility is useful only if the trolley has somewhere safe to stop. Choose a position where it can be used for chopping or serving without blocking the principal passage, then return it there after use. Lockable casters, a stable top and shelves that do not spill items during movement are sensible functional checks, but universal product specifications are not established.
Use it for the task you actually lack
A cart may hold small appliances, daily breakfast supplies, serving dishes or a temporary prep surface. It can also move toward the dining area when serving and back to the kitchen for clearing. Do not treat it as a substitute for every function of a fixed island: seating, plumbing, electrical services and large built-in storage require a different plan.
3. Layer lighting by purpose
Open kitchens need more than one light source because a single ceiling fitting rarely provides comfortable general illumination, useful light on worktops and atmosphere for the adjoining room. HGTV groups the roles as main, decorative and task lighting.

| Lighting role | Where it helps | Planning decision |
|---|---|---|
| Main or ambient | The whole kitchen and circulation routes | Provide even illumination so movement and cleaning do not depend on decorative fittings. |
| Task | Sink, cooking zone and food-preparation surfaces | Place the light where hands and ingredients work, avoiding shadows from cabinets or the cook’s body. |
| Decorative or zone-defining | Island, dining area or a visible focal point | Use it to shape the room’s character while keeping task lighting independent. |
Plan scenes, not just fixtures
Think about how the room is used at breakfast, during food preparation, while entertaining and after cleanup. A brighter work setting and a softer evening setting make the kitchen feel less like a workshop when the living area is in use. Decorative lighting should never be the only light over a chopping surface.
4. Use pendants to focus an island or dining zone
Pendants can visually announce an island or dining area in a room with no walls. Their value is partly decorative and partly organizational: they tell the eye where gathering or eating happens.
Keep the composition proportional
Select a number and scale of pendants that relate to the island or table rather than filling the entire ceiling. Align them with the surface below and keep the main walking route outside the area where people may bump them. Because no universal hanging heights or product ratings are established, follow the fitting manufacturer’s instructions and local electrical rules.
Pair style with useful light
Choose a finish that relates to nearby hardware, furniture or flooring, but check the actual light output and glare. Pendants can provide decorative emphasis while recessed, ceiling or under-cabinet sources handle work. This separation lets the island look inviting without leaving food preparation in shadow.

5. Add under-cabinet light where preparation happens
HKS Interiors recommends dedicated task lighting and cites under-cabinet lights over worktops as an example. In an open kitchen, this small intervention has an outsized effect because it improves the surface where the cook’s attention is concentrated without washing the living room in bright light.
Target the working edge
Place the light toward the front of the cabinet underside so the counter is illuminated rather than the cabinet face. Prioritize the sink, primary chopping area and cooking preparation surface. If a section of counter is used only for display or appliance storage, it may not need the same treatment.

Coordinate the visual finish
Keep the fittings, wiring and controls unobtrusive from the living area. Concealed channels or an integrated strip can preserve a clean line, subject to electrical safety requirements in your location. Under-cabinet light complements, rather than replaces, the room’s ambient and decorative layers.
6. Coordinate color with the adjoining room
An open kitchen is seen alongside living-room furniture, flooring and wall color, so a palette chosen in isolation can make the room feel chopped into unrelated zones. IKEA recommends a shade that complements the furniture or flooring in the living room to reinforce cohesion.

Choose a relationship, not a matching set
Coordination does not require identical cabinets and sofas. Repeat one undertone, material or accent color across the kitchen and the next room, then allow the cabinetry to remain distinct. For example, a cabinet color can echo a timber floor’s warmth while the worktop supplies a contrasting but compatible surface.
Test the palette from every viewpoint
View samples from the sofa, dining chairs and kitchen worktop, both in daylight and with the planned lights on. A color that looks quiet under a showroom’s lighting may dominate an open room at night. Remember that visible appliances, bins and countertop items also contribute to the final palette.
7. Let storage control what the living room sees
Open layouts expose everyday kitchen mess, so storage is part of the room’s visual design as well as its utility. IKEA’s guidance emphasizes planning storage around daily items and providing accessible, separate waste bins.
Store by frequency and point of use
Keep the tools used at every meal close to the preparation and cooking zones. Reserve less accessible cupboards for occasional equipment. This reduces the number of items left on the counter and shortens the route between storage and work. A dedicated place for serving pieces near the dining side can prevent repeated traffic through the cooking area.

Plan waste into the cabinetry
Separate, easy-to-reach bins make sorting and clearing more practical than a single container hidden far from the sink. Position them where food scraps and packaging are generated, while ensuring doors and drawers do not collide with the main route. The exact recycling requirements depend on local collection rules, so adapt the compartments to your municipality.
Protect the calm side of the room
Use closed doors for visually busy supplies and reserve open shelves for a small number of items you are willing to display. A clear counter is not a permanent state; it is the result of giving daily equipment a storage home that is convenient enough to use.
8. Give seating a clear job
Island seating can support quick meals, homework, conversation or watching the cook, but stools also consume floor area and can obstruct circulation. HGTV lists seating and dining among possible island functions; that does not mean every island needs seats.
Decide who will use it
Consider whether the island is for one person with a laptop, several people eating, or occasional guests. The answer affects how much overhang, clearance and durable surface you need. If formal meals happen at a separate dining table, the island may work better as a standing conversation point or uninterrupted preparation counter.

When stools are pulled out, they should not block the route between the kitchen and living area or interfere with appliance doors. Test the occupied arrangement, not just the pushed-in one. Choose seating that can be fully tucked away when the kitchen is working at capacity.

An island, change in lighting or shift in flooring can mark the kitchen boundary while preserving visual flow. This is the central balancing act of an open plan: the work zone must feel organized, but the living area should not feel cut off.

Use alignment to create order
Line the island, dining table or pendant grouping with the room’s architecture so each zone reads deliberately. A consistent sightline from the entry to the living area can make the kitchen feel less like an obstacle. Keep tall storage and appliances from forming an unintended wall unless that separation is helpful.
Separate activities, not people
Place noisy or messy tasks where they are easiest to contain, while keeping a social edge—such as seating or a serving surface—toward the living side. This lets the cook participate in conversation without asking guests to stand in the work area. Confirm the arrangement against real routes, furniture sizes and the dimensions of the room rather than relying on an inspiration image.
Fixed island, mobile cart or no island?
The right choice depends on the space and the function you need. Use this comparison before drawing cabinetry.
| Option | Available floor area and circulation | Extra worktop or storage | Seating and visual separation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed island | Requires a layout that supports comfortable movement around a permanent object. | Can combine preparation surface and built-in storage. | Can include seating and clearly mark the kitchen–living boundary. |
| Mobile trolley or island | Can be moved when routes or activities change; still needs a safe parking position. | Adds movable worktop and storage. | Usually offers less integrated seating and a lighter visual boundary. |
| No island | Preserves the most open central floor area. | Requires worktop and storage along the perimeter or another piece of furniture. | Leaves zoning to lighting, furniture placement, flooring or cabinetry. |
These are qualitative distinctions, not universal dimensions. Local building, electrical, ventilation and accessibility requirements may add constraints, particularly when plumbing, cooking appliances or fixed cabinetry move.
A practical planning sequence
- Measure the shared room. Record walls, openings, windows, doors, radiators and the routes people already use between kitchen, dining and living areas.
- List the kitchen’s real jobs. Separate daily preparation, cooking, serving, eating, storage, recycling and socializing. Rank the two or three functions that matter most.
- Test the center. Tape a fixed island, a smaller cart and an empty central area on the floor. Walk with doors open, stools occupied and a serving dish in hand.
- Assign storage. Put frequently used items near their point of use and locate separate waste bins where clearing actually occurs.
- Draw the lighting layers. Mark ambient coverage, task light at the sink/cooking/prep surfaces and decorative light over the island or dining zone.
- Check the room from the living side. Look for visible clutter, glare, appliance fronts and color conflicts from the sofa and dining seats.
- Verify local requirements. Before construction, confirm electrical, ventilation, fire-safety, plumbing and accessibility rules for your jurisdiction. The cited guidance includes sources from Türkiye and New Zealand, so their examples should not be treated as a substitute for local regulations.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Installing an island because the room is open. An island that narrows routes or prevents appliance doors from opening reduces function.
- Using decorative pendants as work lighting. A beautiful fitting does not guarantee useful illumination at the chopping board or sink.
- Choosing colors without the adjoining room in view. The kitchen and living area are read together, including their floors, furniture and evening light.
- Leaving waste and daily equipment unplanned. Visible clutter is a predictable outcome when storage and bins are too inconvenient to use.
- Adding stools without testing them pulled out. Seating changes the footprint of an island and can block the very circulation the open plan is meant to preserve.
- Copying an inspiration image’s dimensions. The sources provide qualitative guidance, not a universal minimum size; your room, routes and local code determine what fits.
How to make the final design feel intentional
Choose one visual anchor—an island, a coordinated cabinet color, a pendant group or a strong worktop—and let the other elements support it. Keep the kitchen’s working surfaces genuinely useful, provide storage that is easier to use than leaving items out, and light the tasks rather than relying on decoration. When the room is viewed as one connected sequence from entry to living area, style becomes the result of functional decisions instead of a layer applied afterward.
