The most successful walk-in wardrobe starts with the room you actually have and the clothes, shoes and accessories you need to store. Measure the walls, doors, windows and ceiling height first; then choose a layout that leaves a comfortable route through the space. A straight run can solve a narrow room, an L or U can use more walls, and an island only works when generous circulation remains.

Use the nine ideas below as adaptable patterns rather than fixed templates. Modular frames, rails, shelves and drawers can be arranged around measured dimensions, while mirrors, lighting and screening treatments make the room easier to use and calmer to look at.

Plan the wardrobe around the room and your inventory

Before choosing finishes or ordering components, create a scaled plan. Record every wall length, ceiling height, door swing, window, radiator, socket, sloping ceiling and obstruction. Photograph the room from each corner and mark where you can stand to open doors or drawers. A beautiful arrangement that blocks a door or leaves no place to turn is not a workable wardrobe.

Measure storage depth and hanging space

IKEA Spain’s planning guide uses 60 cm depth and 140 cm width as guidance for a minimum hanging area. The page says the total length required depends on whether the storage runs along one wall, turns a corner or forms a U. These are retailer planning figures, not a universal building standard, so check the dimensions of the actual frames, rails, doors and handles you intend to install.

Make a storage inventory

Count what the wardrobe must hold before assigning shelves. Separate long garments from shirts and folded clothes; list shoes by type; and estimate the number of bags, belts, scarves, watches and jewellery pieces. Long garments need an uninterrupted full-height hanging section. Shorter items can use two hanging levels if you can reach both comfortably. Shoes need shelves or racks sized for their different heights, while small accessories are easier to find in drawers, pull-out trays or dedicated inserts.

Reserve circulation before filling the walls

Draw the storage depth on the floor with tape or cardboard and walk the route with clothes on the rails. California Closets’ sizing guide gives 24–30 inches as a pass-through walking reference, at least 6 ft between walls with opposing hanging rods, and 36 inches of clearance around an island. The company presents these as rules of thumb and examples, not code requirements or independently verified standards. Treat the narrower end as a planning warning: the effective aisle is the space left after garments, doors and handles occupy their depth.

Choose a layout that matches the room

The right arrangement depends on usable wall length, room shape, the number of people sharing the wardrobe and whether you want concealed storage or an open dressing-room display. The examples below come from California Closets’ layout guide and its sizing article; they are not minimum legal dimensions.

Layout How it uses the room Company example or rule of thumb Best fit
Single-sided Storage stays on one wall, leaving the opposite side open. About 4 ft × 4 ft is described as a small viable walk-in; 24–30 inches is given as a pass-through reference. Narrow rooms or a compact personal wardrobe.
L-shaped Two adjacent walls meet at a corner, adding capacity without enclosing the centre. Roughly 5 ft × 8 ft is shown as an example. Medium rooms where a corner can carry shelves, drawers or hanging.
Double-sided Opposite walls carry storage and the centre becomes an aisle or shared zone. About 7 ft × 7 ft is shown as an example; at least 6 ft between walls with opposing hanging rods is suggested. Two users who want separate sides.
U-shaped Three adjoining walls provide continuous storage and a dressing-room feel. About 7 ft × 10 ft is shown as an example. Larger rooms with enough central floor area.
Island A central dresser or display unit sits inside a larger layout. About 10 ft × 10 ft or more is suggested, with 36 inches of clearance around the island. Large rooms where folded items and accessories need a central work surface.
Common walk-in A general planning benchmark rather than a shape. At least 6 ft × 10 ft is described as a more common size. Households needing more than a compact single-wall arrangement.

Nine walk-in wardrobe design ideas

1. Build a modular system around the measured walls

Modular storage lets you combine wardrobe frames, hanging rails, shelves, pull-out trays and drawers instead of forcing the room to accept one fixed cabinet size. IKEA’s walk-in wardrobe guide describes combining PAX frames for large or small spaces, including corner frames; that is one example of a broader modular product category, not a requirement to use one manufacturer.

Start by placing the components that have non-negotiable dimensions, such as a full-length hanging bay or a shoe rack. Fill the remaining gaps with adjustable shelves or drawers. Check the finished height against the ceiling, skirting boards and coving, and confirm that doors and drawer fronts can open without colliding with an adjacent return. Modular systems are especially useful when your storage needs may change, because shelves and rails can be repositioned more easily than built-in joinery.

2. Keep a narrow room single-sided

A straight run along one wall is the most space-conscious basic arrangement described by California Closets. It keeps every storage element on one side and preserves a clear route from the entrance to the back of the room. Use the wall for the items you access most often, then add high shelves for seasonal pieces rather than narrowing the aisle with a second bank.

Confirm the actual depth of the chosen system, including hanging clothes and handles, before fixing it in place. Mark that depth on the floor and walk through with the door open. If the room is too narrow for comfortable opposing storage, a single wall with carefully planned vertical capacity will work better than a cramped double-sided design.

3. Turn two adjacent walls into an L

An L-shaped plan adds storage around a corner while preserving an open area for dressing. California Closets presents it as an option for medium or larger closets; its separate sizing article shows a roughly 5 ft × 8 ft example rather than a universal minimum. Put drawers or shelves on the shorter return if that corner is difficult to reach, and reserve the longest wall for hanging sections.

Corner frames, shelves or a continuous rail can prevent the junction from becoming dead space. Keep handles, drawer pulls and door swings clear of each other. If two people use the room, assign one wall to each person or divide the L by function, such as hanging on one side and folded storage on the other.

4. Use a U shape when three walls are genuinely usable

A U-shaped wardrobe gives three adjoining walls to storage and can feel like a dedicated dressing room. It is also the layout most likely to lose usable floor area once the storage depth is installed. Before committing, place temporary boxes at the proposed depth on all three sides and test whether you can turn, bend to a low drawer and open a door without blocking the route.

Organise the U by frequency and reach: everyday hanging at the easiest-to-access section, folded items in drawers or mid-height shelves, and infrequently used luggage or seasonal clothing higher up. Keep the corners purposeful with a corner unit, shelves or a rail transition rather than allowing two inaccessible runs to overlap.

5. Divide a shared wardrobe with opposite storage

Double-sided storage can create two distinct zones for partners, siblings or separate categories while leaving the centre open. Give each person an identifiable wall or bay and agree on a shared area for luggage, laundry or spare bedding. Labels, consistent shelf heights and a small drawer allocation can make the arrangement feel equal even when the inventories differ.

Judge the aisle after clothes are hanging, not from the empty-room measurement. Bulky garments can project beyond the frame, and open drawers temporarily consume more space. Use the opposing-wall clearance guidance in the planning table as a check, then widen the aisle if either user has mobility needs or if the room doubles as a dressing area.

6. Add an island or boutique display only when the room supports it

A central island can hold folded items, jewellery, watches, sunglasses and other small accessories in drawers while providing a surface for sorting outfits. California Closets presents islands as a larger-room feature; its sizing guidance uses about 10 ft × 10 ft or more and 36 inches of clearance around the island as planning references. Tape the island footprint on the floor before ordering it and open every surrounding drawer in the test layout.

For a boutique effect, combine open shelves, selected glass-front cabinets, integrated lighting and upgraded finishes rather than displaying every possession. Open storage makes colour and texture part of the room, while glass doors protect chosen items from dust without hiding them completely. Keep less attractive or rarely used pieces in closed drawers or cupboards so the display remains edited.

7. Make a small wardrobe feel lighter with vertical storage and a mirror

When floor area is limited, use the full wall height for rails and shelves. IKEA Spain recommends wall-to-wall or floor-to-ceiling shelves and rails, hanging organisers and a large mirror as ways to use vertical space and visually open a small room. Place everyday items between shoulder and eye level, then reserve the highest shelves for labelled seasonal boxes.

A full-length mirror lets you check an outfit without taking floor space for a separate dressing mirror. Mount it where the door swing and hanging clothes will not obscure the reflection. Open shelves can make a compact room feel less enclosed, but use baskets or matching boxes for small items so the vertical arrangement does not become visual clutter.

8. Hide clutter with curtains or sliding doors

If an open wardrobe looks busy from the bedroom, a curtain can soften the opening and conceal clothes when closed. Choose a track that spans the full storage run and ensure the fabric can clear drawers and floor-level shoes. Curtains are also useful when you want the flexibility of open access during dressing and a calmer view at other times.

IKEA’s guide describes a ceiling-to-floor sliding-door system as a way to divide a room or screen wardrobe storage. Verify the product’s width, height, track requirements and opening direction against the room before specifying it. Sliding panels need a clear run and may require different framing from a curtain, so do not assume an existing opening can accept them without adjustment.

9. Layer wardrobe lighting with general room lighting

Storage lighting and room lighting solve different problems. IKEA Spain suggests LED wardrobe lighting for clothes and ceiling spotlights for general illumination. California Closets shows integrated shelf lighting in a design example. Use the source guidance as a practical visibility strategy; the reviewed pages do not establish measured brightness or colour-rendering performance.

Plan the wiring before the shelves are fixed. Put task lighting where it will illuminate the back of a shelf or hanging section rather than the front of a person’s face, and keep switches reachable from the entrance. Check how doors, curtains and tall garments will cast shadows. A separate general light should still illuminate the floor and aisle when wardrobe doors or curtains are closed.

Match storage features to what you own

Long and short hanging

Give dresses, coats and other long garments a full-height bay so hems do not bunch on a shelf or floor. Use double-hanging sections for shirts, trousers and other shorter items only where the lower rail remains easy to reach. Measure your longest pieces rather than relying on a generic rail height.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Folded clothing and drawers

Adjustable shelves accommodate changing stacks, while drawers keep frequently used folded items and underwear contained. Pull-out trays can bring accessories into view without requiring you to reach into a deep corner. Position heavy or high-use drawers where you can open them fully without standing in the main route.

Shoes and accessories

Shoes vary in height, so a mixture of shelf spacing is more useful than identical compartments. Bags need shelves tall enough for their shape; belts, scarves and ties benefit from pull-out racks or hanging organisers. Small jewellery and watch collections are easier to separate with drawer inserts than with a single deep drawer.

A practical design workflow

  1. Survey the shell. Measure each wall, ceiling height, door and window position, and mark fixed services and trim.
  2. List the contents. Count long garments, short garments, folded stacks, shoes, bags and accessories; note which items need daily access.
  3. Choose the layout. Compare single-sided, L-shaped, double-sided, U-shaped and island options against the usable walls and the circulation references in the table.
  4. Draw storage zones. Place full-length hanging first, then short hanging, shelves, drawers, shoe storage and high seasonal storage.
  5. Test at full depth. Use tape or temporary boxes to represent frames, hanging clothes, doors and the island. Walk the route and open every drawer and door.
  6. Select components. Compare modular frames, rails, shelves, trays and drawer dimensions with your plan; confirm corner compatibility and ceiling clearance.
  7. Plan screening and lighting. Decide whether the wardrobe stays open, uses curtains or uses sliding doors, then resolve tracks, switches and wiring before installation.
  8. Install and adjust. Level the system, secure it as required by the manufacturer, load the heaviest items where the structure allows, and reposition shelves after living with the arrangement.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Copying a stock-photo layout: A photograph rarely shows door swings, ceiling height or the depth of loaded clothes. Recreate the footprint in your room before buying.
  • Using empty-room measurements: Calculate the aisle after frames, garments, handles, doors and drawers are in place.
  • Filling every wall: A U shape or island can reduce comfort if the remaining floor area is too tight. Keep an open dressing zone where the room needs one.
  • Ignoring corners: Two straight runs can leave inaccessible junctions. Use a compatible corner frame, shelf or rail transition and test reach.
  • Putting everything at one height: Separate long hanging, double-hanging, folded storage and high seasonal shelves according to the inventory.
  • Lighting only the ceiling: Overhead light can leave the back of shelves dark. Add wardrobe lighting and check shadows with doors or curtains in their closed position.
  • Specifying doors without checking dimensions: Sliding panels and tracks need verified opening width, height and clearance; curtains need a suitable track and enough fabric to cover the run.
  • Treating vendor dimensions as building code: The figures in the planning table are company guidance and examples. Confirm local requirements and the installed product’s instructions for your project.

How to decide between open, concealed and custom storage

Open modular storage

Choose open rails and shelves when you want every item visible and quick to reach, or when the room is small and visual openness matters. Keep the display edited with matching boxes and a deliberate colour order. The trade-off is that the wardrobe remains visible from the room and needs regular tidying.

Screened storage

Curtains or sliding doors conceal visual clutter and can make a wardrobe read as part of the room rather than a wall of clothing. They add another layer to the opening, so account for track space, panel movement and access to drawers when planning.

Professional custom design

Custom design and installation can be useful for sloped ceilings, unusual corners, complex obstructions or a large room that needs an island and integrated lighting. A modular system is often a practical route for straightforward walls. In either case, take the same measured inventory and circulation plan to the designer; a service cannot compensate for missing information about what the wardrobe must hold.

Final checks before you order

  • Every wall dimension, obstruction and ceiling change is recorded.
  • The chosen layout leaves a tested route through the room after clothes are loaded.
  • Long garments have full-height hanging space and short garments have reachable rails.
  • Shelves, drawers, shoe storage and accessory organisers match the actual inventory.
  • Corners, door swings, drawer openings and sliding tracks have been tested at full scale.
  • Lighting, switches and any curtain or door hardware are coordinated before installation.
  • Any quoted dimensions are treated as planning guidance, not universal standards.
