You can create a whimsical, hand-painted animated-film image in ChatGPT without paying for a separate image generator. The free tier includes ChatGPT Images, although image creation has its own usage limit and OpenAI does not promise a fixed number of free generations per day.
The most reliable approach is to describe the visual qualities you want—watercolor backgrounds, expressive 2D characters, soft cel shading, warm natural light, and gentle magical realism—rather than asking for an exact copy of a studio, artist, film, or existing character.
What you need before starting
- A ChatGPT account or access to ChatGPT
- A text prompt describing your subject and visual treatment
- An optional reference photo in PNG, JPEG/JPG, or non-animated GIF format
ChatGPT Images 2.0 is available on all ChatGPT tiers, including Free. Image generation uses a separate limit from ordinary text messages, file uploads, and data analysis. Free limits can vary, so there is no dependable permanent quota such as “three images every day.” If you reach the image limit, you will need to wait for it to reset or use a paid plan.

How to open ChatGPT’s image generator
There are two practical ways to begin.
Method 1: Generate from a normal chat
- Open ChatGPT.
- Start a new chat, or open an existing conversation.
- Type an image request in the message box.
- Send the request and wait for the image to render.
You do not need a slash command, special syntax, or separate image model for the normal workflow. ChatGPT can recognize a plain-language image request and generate the result.

Method 2: Use the Images area
- Open the ChatGPT sidebar.
- Select Images. If it is not visible, select More, then Images.
- Choose Create Image.
- Enter your prompt and submit it.
The precise position of these controls can differ between the web and mobile apps, but More → Images and Images → Create Image are the documented paths.
Use visual characteristics instead of copying a studio
“Ghibli-style” is commonly used as shorthand for a particular kind of gentle, richly atmospheric Japanese animation. However, a prompt that asks for an exact imitation can produce a refusal, a weak result, or an image that is too close to a recognizable copyrighted work.
Describe the qualities you want instead:
- Hand-painted watercolor backgrounds
- Expressive 2D character design
- Soft pastel or muted natural colors
- Subtle cel-animation shading
- Organic foliage, clouds, buildings, and textures
- Warm diffuse sunlight or blue evening light
- Whimsical but understated magical realism
- A nostalgic cinematic mood
Also state that the characters, setting, and composition must be original. Do not request an existing film character, copied scene, logo, or recognizable poster design.

Build a stronger prompt in six parts
For more control, assemble the request using the following structure:

OpenAI’s image-generation guidance favors clear descriptions over complicated prompt formulas. One to three well-written sentences are often enough. Add detail when the framing, text, lighting, or elements that must remain unchanged are important.
Control the shape of the image
Use the image editor’s Aspect ratio control when available, or state the format directly in the prompt.
Create this as a vertical 9:16 phone wallpaper.Create this as a wide 16:9 cinematic landscape.Create this as a square 1:1 profile image.For a painting reference or landscape study, a wide 16:9 composition gives the environment room to breathe. A portrait-oriented 9:16 image is better suited to a phone lock screen or social post. A square image works well for a profile picture, but ask for a clear focal point near the center.

Improve the first image without starting over
Use follow-up instructions in the same conversation. This gives ChatGPT more context about the characters, composition, and lighting than a completely new chat would.
Keep the same characters and setting, but make the forest denser, soften the sunlight, and use a wider camera angle.Keep the composition and character poses. Turn a photograph into a painted illustration
You can upload a photo and ask ChatGPT to reinterpret it as an original illustrated scene.
- Select the + or attachment button in the composer.
- Choose Add photos & files.
- Upload the image.
- Describe the transformation and identify the details that must remain.

Only upload a real person’s photo when you have permission to use their likeness. In particular, do not create a photorealistic-looking alteration that could mislead people about what the person actually said or did.
Make posters and signs with readable text
Text inside generated images can still be inconsistent, so keep it short and specify it carefully. Put the exact words in quotation marks or capital letters, state where they should appear, and say that no additional text should be included.
Create a vertical illustrated poster. Add the exact title “MOONLIGHT FESTIVAL” in large cream-colored hand-lettered text at the top. Add no other text.For a poster with important wording, check every letter after generation. If the text is wrong, ask ChatGPT to correct only the title while preserving the artwork, layout, colors, and characters.

- Choose Copy, Save, or Share.
- On the web, choose Save to download it to your device.
Be careful when cleaning up old conversations: deleting the conversation where an image was created removes that image from the Images area.
Why a prompt may fail

A refusal does not necessarily mean ChatGPT cannot produce the kind of image you want. It may result from an exact imitation request, a recognizable copyrighted character, a real-person likeness issue, or an overly constrained prompt. Rephrase around the visual features—watercolor backgrounds, expressive 2D figures, soft shading, and environmental storytelling—and keep the subject original.
Common claims that are no longer accurate
- “Free users cannot generate images.” Free users can generate images, but their image limits are stricter and separate from text limits.
- “You must select DALL·E.” The current ChatGPT Images experience handles the ordinary workflow. DALL·E remains accessible through the DALL·E GPT but is optional.
- “There is a fixed daily quota.” OpenAI does not guarantee one permanent free number; limits can change and may be reduced during high demand.
- “The selection tool edits only inside the highlighted area.” Changes can extend beyond the selection, so describe the region and the elements to preserve.
- “A long prompt always produces a better image.” Clear, relevant instructions are more useful than a wall of adjectives.
