If you are using Paint 3D, you can remove an image background and export the remaining subject as a transparent PNG. The important distinction is that Transparent canvas only makes the canvas transparent; it does not remove a photographic background by itself.
These instructions apply to Paint 3D, not the classic MS Paint. Paint 3D was deprecated in August 2024 and removed from the Microsoft Store on November 4, 2024. If it is already installed on your Windows computer, the procedure below may still work.
How to remove a background in Paint 3D
- Open Paint 3D from Windows Search.
- Select Menu in the upper-left corner.
- Choose Open, select Browse files, and open the image you want to edit.
- Choose Magic Select from the top toolbar.
- Resize and reposition the selection box so it surrounds the part of the image you want to keep. Leave as little unnecessary background inside the box as possible, but do not cut into the subject.
- Select Next in the right-side panel. Paint 3D will attempt to identify the subject.
- Inspect the outline. Use Add to restore missing areas and Remove to eliminate background pixels that were selected accidentally.
- When the selection is correct, select Done. The extracted subject becomes a separate movable object.
Turn on the transparent canvas
- Select Canvas on the top toolbar.
- In the Canvas panel, turn on Transparent canvas.
The solid canvas should disappear while the extracted object remains visible. If the original background is still part of the movable object, transparency has not removed it automatically—you must delete those unwanted areas or refine the Magic Select result.

Clean up the cutout
For a simple subject, drag the extracted object away from the original image. Select and delete any remaining background portions, then move the subject back into position.
Another clean method is to copy the extracted object onto a new transparent canvas:
- Right-click the extracted object and select Copy.
- Choose Menu → New.
- If Paint 3D asks whether to save the current image, select Don’t save if you no longer need the original layout.
- Paste the object onto the new canvas.
- Choose Canvas and enable Transparent canvas if it is not already enabled.
At high zoom, use the Eraser to remove small remnants around the subject. This is especially useful for tidying corners and obvious halos, although Paint 3D is not a precision masking application.

Save the result as a transparent PNG
- Select Menu → Save as → Image.
- In the save dialog, set Save as type to PNG (image).
- Make sure Transparency is enabled.
- Select Save.
Some older Paint 3D instructions call the export command 2D PNG. The wording can vary between legacy builds, but the essential settings are the same: choose PNG and enable Transparency.

Why PNG matters
JPEG and JPG files do not preserve transparent pixels. If you save the cutout as JPEG, Paint 3D must replace the transparent areas with a solid color, often white. Use PNG for logos, isolated objects, stickers, and other artwork that needs to sit over different backgrounds.
Magic Select problems and fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | What to try |

| A white, black, or colored edge surrounds the cutout | Edge pixels contain blended colors from the original background. | Refine with Add/Remove, then use the Eraser at high zoom for small areas. |
| Hair, fur, glass, or water looks rough | Fine detail and semi-transparent edges are difficult for automatic selection. | Use a higher-resolution source image and expect to perform manual cleanup. Paint 3D may not produce a professional-quality mask for these subjects. |
| The saved image looks white | The viewer may display transparent pixels against white. | Place the PNG over a colored background or open it in an application that shows transparency clearly. Also verify that Transparency was enabled during export. |

Can classic MS Paint make a transparent background?
The traditional Paint application does not provide Paint 3D’s Magic Select workflow or its Transparent canvas control. If you opened the plain Paint app and cannot find those commands, you are using the wrong application for this method.

Look for Paint 3D in Windows Search. It was included on some Windows 10 devices, but it was not preinstalled with Windows 11. Because Microsoft removed Paint 3D from the Store, a computer without an existing installation may not have an official Store download available.

Paint 3D works reasonably well for a quick cutout with a clear subject and a contrasting background. It is less reliable for low-resolution photographs, complicated edges, transparent objects, hair, fur, smoke, and subjects that blend into their surroundings.

- Separate the subject with Magic Select.
- Enable Transparent canvas.
- Export as PNG (image) with Transparency enabled.
FAQ
Can I make a transparent background in regular MS Paint?
The classic Paint app does not have Paint 3D’s Magic Select and Transparent canvas tools. The steps in this article require Paint 3D, and Paint 3D may be available only on computers where it was already installed.
Does Transparent canvas remove the background automatically?
No. It makes the canvas transparent, but you still need to remove the photographic background with Magic Select, deletion, or the Eraser.
Why did my transparent image save with a white background?
Check that you exported as PNG (image) and enabled Transparency in the save dialog. Some image viewers also display transparent pixels as white, so test the file over a colored background.

The Bottom Line
In Paint 3D, use Magic Select to isolate the subject, enable Canvas → Transparent canvas, and export through Menu → Save as → Image as PNG (image) with Transparency turned on. If you only delete the background or save as JPEG, the result will not be a true transparent PNG.
