Canva is a drag-and-drop design platform for creating visuals such as social posts, workshop flyers, portfolio pages, exhibition invitations, price lists, and presentations. To get started, choose a design type or custom size, add a template or your own artwork and text, arrange the layout, then download it in the format you need. You do not need graphic-design experience, though button names and available features can differ by device, region, and account plan.

What Canva is—and what it is not
Canva is a design platform available in a web browser, desktop app, and mobile app. Its editor offers templates and a library of photos, illustrations, shapes, fonts, video, audio, charts, and other design elements.
For a painter, Canva is best thought of as a layout and publishing tool. It can help you present a painting, but it is not a replacement for Photoshop, Affinity Photo, or a dedicated painting application when you need detailed retouching, colour management, masking, or pixel-level editing.
The Free plan includes the editor, templates, stock content, and 5 GB of cloud storage. Paid plans add premium content and tools. A premium item may prompt you to pay or upgrade when you download. See Canva Free and Canva pricing for current plan details.
Canva Teams is no longer available for new sign-ups or upgrades. Existing customers can remain on their current plan unless they switch or cancel; Canva directs new business customers to Canva Business.
1. Start a new Canva design
- Sign in to Canva.
- Select Create.
- Choose a design type, such as Instagram Post, Presentation, Flyer, Poster, Document, or Website.
- Select Custom size if you already know the dimensions you need.
- Enter the width and height, then choose pixels, inches, millimetres, or centimetres as appropriate.
Choose the final use before you begin. A square social post, an A4 exhibition flyer, and a large printed poster should not all be designed on the same canvas.
| Purpose | Useful starting point | Typical export |
|---|---|---|
| Square social post | Instagram Post or a 1:1 custom canvas | PNG or JPG |
| Portrait social story | Instagram Story or a 9:16 canvas | PNG, JPG, or MP4 |
| Workshop flyer | Flyer or A4 custom size | PDF for printing |
| Online portfolio image | Custom dimensions matched to your website | JPG or PNG |
| Transparent logo or signature | Custom size | PNG with transparency, where available |
If you are unsure of the dimensions, check the printer, gallery, social platform, or website specification first. Resizing later is possible, but it can move text and crop images.
2. Use a template or start with a blank page
After the editor opens, select Design in the side panel and open Templates. Search for a specific purpose rather than a vague term. For example, try “artist portfolio,” “art exhibition,” “painting workshop,” “gallery opening,” or “Instagram art post.”
Select a template to apply it to the design. Its text, images, colours, and shapes remain editable, though some content may be premium. Replace the sample content with your own rather than trying to preserve every part of the original design.
Rank #2
A blank design is often the better choice for a painting portfolio or a carefully photographed artwork. Templates can impose unnecessary decoration, while your painting usually needs clear space and attention.
A practical template-editing order
- Replace the sample images with your own artwork.
- Rewrite the headline and supporting text.
- Remove decorative elements that do not serve the message.
- Set your colours and fonts.
- Check alignment and spacing after the content is final.
3. Learn the Canva editor
The editor generally has three working areas:
- Side panel: tools such as Design, Elements, Uploads, and Text.
- Central canvas: the page you are designing.
- Top or floating toolbar: controls that change depending on what you have selected.
For multi-page documents, page thumbnails and controls appear around or below the canvas. The arrangement differs on a phone, so browser instructions may not match the mobile screen exactly.
Click an object once to select it. Drag it to move it, use the corner handles to resize it, and use the rotation handle to turn it. Double-click an image or text box when you need to edit its contents. See Canva’s editing and designing help for current editor guidance.
4. Add your painting photographs and other files
- Select Uploads in the side panel.
- Select Upload files.
- Choose images from your computer or an available connected source.
- Drag an uploaded image onto the page.
You can also drag a file directly onto the Canva page. Uploaded material appears in Uploads so you can reuse it in other designs.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Common image formats include JPG, PNG, and SVG. A photograph of a painting should be as sharp and accurately lit as possible before it enters Canva. Canva can place and crop the image, but it cannot restore detail lost through a blurry photograph or badly clipped highlights.
Crop a painting into a frame
- Open Elements and search for Frames, or choose a frame from the available categories.
- Drag the frame onto the page.
- Drag your uploaded painting onto the frame.
- Double-click the image inside the frame to reposition or zoom it.
- Click outside the frame when the crop looks correct.
Keep a full uncropped version of the artwork elsewhere. A crop that looks good in an Instagram square may cut off the edges of a canvas or signature.
Imported designs may be flattened
Uploading a finished design does not necessarily make every original object editable. For example, an imported Affinity file can appear in Canva as a static image or graphic rather than as its original collection of layers. If you need to edit individual text, shapes, or image layers, rebuild those parts in Canva or use the original design application. See Canva’s Affinity file import guidance.
5. Add and format text
- Select Text in the side panel.
- Choose a heading, subheading, or body-text style.
- Double-click inside the text box and replace the sample wording.
- Use the toolbar to change the font, size, colour, alignment, spacing, and effects.
For a painting announcement, include only information the viewer needs: the artwork or event name, date, venue or link, and a short call to action. A poster crowded with artist biography, medium details, and several competing headlines becomes harder to read.

Use one display font and one readable body font unless there is a strong reason to add more. Keep text over a photograph only when contrast is sufficient. A translucent dark shape behind pale text can improve readability without hiding the artwork.
In Canva Docs, typing / opens a search for blocks such as Heading, Subheading, and Body. In a standard visual design, use the Text panel instead.
6. Add shapes, lines, and other elements
- Select Elements.
- Search for a term such as rectangle, line, paint texture, or brush stroke.
- Use filters or result categories when available.
- Double-click an item or drag it onto the canvas.
- Resize, move, rotate, recolour, or delete it as needed.
Elements can include graphics, shapes, photos, videos, audio, and charts. Some are free; others are premium or may carry a watermark until licensed.
When several objects overlap, select an object and use Position to align it or change its layer order. Hold Shift while selecting multiple objects, then group them so they move together. Lock a background image or finished section to prevent accidental movement.

Shortcuts can vary by device or context. Check Canva’s keyboard shortcut reference if one does not work.
7. Edit an image and remove its background
Select an image and choose Edit photo when that control is available. Canva may offer adjustments and other image tools from there.
To remove a subject from its background:
- Select the image.
- Select Edit photo, if shown.
- Under Tools, select BG Remover.
- Use the erase and restore controls to refine the edges.
- Export as PNG if you need the removed area to remain transparent.
Background removal and transparent-background export are paid features in current plan documentation, so a Free account may show an upgrade prompt or not show the control. See Canva’s background remover information.
To make an element partly transparent, select it and choose Transparency in the toolbar. Adjust the slider or enter a value. Transparency in the design is not the same as a transparent exported file: JPG cannot preserve transparent areas. Use PNG and enable the transparent-background option when available.

8. Build a design with multiple pages
Canva can keep several pages in one document, which is useful for a portfolio, class handout, price list, or exhibition presentation.
- Select Add page to create a page.
- Select Duplicate page to copy a layout before changing the artwork or wording.
- Select Delete page to remove a page.
- Drag page thumbnails to reorder them.
- Use Pages for thumbnail or grid views where available.
Duplicating a page is an efficient way to make a consistent series of social posts. Keep the title position, type scale, and margins consistent, then change only the image and essential details.
9. Save, organise, and share
Canva autosaves changes while you work. To place a design in a particular folder, use File → Save to folder, then choose an existing folder or create one. Your designs should also be available from the Canva home page when you sign in again.
Autosaving is not the same as downloading a copy to your computer. To create an export file, use Share → Download.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For collaboration, select Share in the upper-right corner. You can enter email addresses, copy a link, and—depending on the design and account—set permission to Can edit, Can comment, or Can view.
Check the access setting before sending the link. Canva designs are private by default under Only people added can access. If a client cannot open the design, they may need to request access. Anyone with the link is more convenient, but it can expose an unfinished commission, private pricing, or unreleased artwork to anyone who receives the link.

- Select Share.
- Select Download.
- Open the File type menu.
- Choose a format.
- Select pages, quality, size, or transparency settings when offered.
- Select Download.
| Format | Best suited to | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| PNG | Sharp online graphics, logos, and transparency | Usually larger than JPG |
| JPG | Ordinary web and social images | Does not preserve transparency |
| Flyers, documents, and printing | Check the printer’s preferred PDF setting | |
| SVG | Vector artwork where available | May require a paid plan |
| MP4 | Animated posts and video | Export can depend on source media and browser or app environment |
| GIF | Short looping animations where supported | Limited colour and image quality compared with video |
Available formats and controls vary by design type and subscription. SVG, transparent PNG, and some quality or compression controls may require a paid plan. If Canva reports premium content, replace the item with a free alternative, pay for the individual content where offered, or use a plan that includes it.
Three common export problems
- The background is not transparent: export as PNG and enable transparent background. A JPG will always fill the background.
- The design contains a watermark or asks for payment: locate and replace premium elements, or license them before downloading.
- The file is not editable in another program: PNG, JPG, PDF, and many imported files do not preserve a Canva-style collection of separately editable layers.
11. Resize a design for another platform
Canva’s current branding uses Magic Switch for resizing and related transformations. In supported accounts, select Resize in the toolbar, choose a preset or enter custom dimensions, then select Resize to change the current design or Copy and Resize to preserve the original. Available options depend on the account and plan. Older tutorials may call this tool Magic Resize.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAlways inspect the result after resizing. A landscape painting may be cropped, a long title may wrap, and a carefully positioned signature may move outside the visible area.
12. Canva AI tools
Canva AI is a group of tools rather than one single feature. Depending on your account, you may see tools such as Magic Design, Magic Write, Magic Media, Magic Edit, Magic Grab, Magic Switch, and Magic Layers.
They can help generate a starting layout, draft wording, create media, or modify parts of a design. Availability, usage allowances, and premium access vary by plan. Treat generated text and imagery as a draft: check facts, spelling, hands and faces, typography, and whether the result represents your own artwork accurately.
Magic Layers is intended to turn a flat design or AI-generated image into separately editable layout elements. Canva describes it as a premium tool, and its availability may depend on rollout or beta access.
A reliable beginner workflow for painters
- Select Create and choose the final format or a custom size.
- Start with a blank page unless a template clearly matches the job.
- Upload a properly lit photograph of the painting.
- Place the artwork first and leave enough breathing room around it.
- Add one clear headline and only the necessary details.
- Use Position, alignment, grouping, and locking to tidy the layout.
- Duplicate the page if you need a consistent series.
- Review the design at the size where people will actually see it.
- Use Share for comments or collaboration.
- Use Share → Download, then confirm file type, page range, transparency, and premium-content status.
FAQ
Is Canva free to use?
Yes. Canva’s Free plan includes the editor, templates, stock content, and 5 GB of cloud storage. Some elements, export settings, and editing tools are paid, so a design containing premium content may require payment or replacement before download.
How do I upload a painting to Canva?
Open a design, select Uploads in the side panel, choose Upload files, and select the image from your device. Drag it from Uploads onto the canvas. JPG, PNG, and SVG are among the commonly supported formats.
How do I download a Canva design with a transparent background?
Select Share → Download, choose PNG, and enable the transparent-background option if it is available on your account. JPG cannot preserve transparency. The option may require a paid plan.
Why can’t someone open my Canva design link?
The design may still be set to Only people added can access. In the Share menu, add the recipient’s email address or change the link permission, such as to Anyone with the link. Do not use a public link for confidential artwork, client information, or private pricing.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Can new customers sign up for Canva Teams?
No. Canva Teams is no longer available for new sign-ups or upgrades. Existing customers can remain on their current plan unless they switch or cancel; Canva directs new business customers to Canva Business.
The Bottom Line
For most painting-related jobs, Canva’s essential workflow is enough: create the correct canvas, upload your artwork, keep the layout restrained, add readable information, and export deliberately. Use PNG for graphics or transparency, JPG for ordinary web images, and PDF for flyers and print documents. Before sharing, check both the download settings and the design’s access permissions.
