For a current Photoshop alternative, start with the free combined Affinity app, launched by Canva on October 29, 2025, or GIMP if you want a free, open-source desktop editor. Photopea is convenient for browser-based PSD work; Pixelmator Pro suits Mac users, while Luminar Neo and PaintShop Pro are better fits for narrower photo-editing workflows.
Photoshop is available through Creative Cloud subscriptions, not as a traditional perpetual-license purchase. The right substitute depends on whether you need painting, photo cleanup, compositing, PSD interchange or occasional reference editing—and no alternative guarantees that every Photoshop file will look or behave identically.

1. Affinity: best free combined alternative
Canva launched the all-new Affinity on October 29, 2025, combining photo editing, vector design and page layout in one app and making it free for everyone, according to its launch announcement. This changes the recommendation for anyone choosing an Affinity product today: Affinity Photo 2 was the strong paid option during most of 2025, but it should not be presented as the unchanged current Affinity product.

PSD support does not guarantee identical results across editors. Text, adjustment layers, effects, masks, smart objects and other Photoshop-specific features can change or be rasterized when files move between applications. Keep a native working file and test important documents before using PSD interchange with collaborators.

2. GIMP: best free desktop alternative
GIMP is free, open-source software distributed under the GNU General Public License. It runs on GNU/Linux, macOS and Windows, and its license allows commercial use. GIMP 3.0 became the stable major series in March 2025; the project’s release archive shows that it later moved to the 3.2 series in 2026, so check the official downloads for the current release.

GIMP supports plug-ins, scripting and batch-oriented workflows. It can be used for painting, retouching, compositing and preparing scanned or photographed artwork. It is not a drop-in Photoshop clone: Photoshop-specific shortcuts, plug-ins, automation and document behavior do not transfer automatically, and new users may need to learn a different interface and layer workflow.
Install it safely
- Download GIMP from gimp.org or its official download links.
- On Windows, use the official installer, which selects the appropriate build where supported.
- Avoid unofficial download portals unless you have a specific reason to verify a package yourself. GIMP warns that third-party packages may be modified or bundled with additional software.
- Download directly from the project if you want the simplest route to a normal free copy. The project notes that selling GPL software can be legal when license requirements are met.
Best for: painters who want a no-cost desktop editor and are willing to learn a different interface.

3. Photopea: best for browser-based PSD editing
Photopea is useful when you need to open a Photoshop file without installing desktop software. It runs in a browser and supports layers, folders, masks, layer styles, smart objects and PSD workflows. The basic editor is free; a Premium account removes advertising. Photopea says that locally opened files are processed on your device rather than uploaded to its servers, and that the editor can work offline after loading.
Useful Photopea paths
- Open a painting or PSD with File → Open.
- Preserve editable layers with File → Save as PSD.
- Export a finished image through File → Export As → PNG or JPG.
- Create a fill layer with Layer → New Fill Layer.
- Convert selected layers into a smart object by right-clicking the selection and choosing Convert to Smart Object.
- Edit a smart object’s source by double-clicking its thumbnail, then save the source with File → Save.
- Add a clipping mask by right-clicking a layer and choosing Clipping mask. The documented Windows shortcut is Alt + Ctrl + G.
Do not close the browser tab before saving, because unsaved work can be lost. Exporting to PNG or JPG discards editable layer structure. Large PSDs may become slow or impractical because the editor depends on browser memory.
Best for: occasional users, students and travelling artists who need convenient PSD access.
4. Pixelmator Pro: best Mac-native alternative
Pixelmator Pro has a standalone Mac version available as a one-time purchase through the Mac App Store. Its listed price was $49.99 on Pixelmator’s product page at the time documented in the dossier; App Store and regional prices can change. The app supports layered editing, masks, nondestructive effects, RAW files, vector tools, layer styles and PSD import and export.
Apple later made Pixelmator Pro available on iPad through its Creator Studio subscription while retaining the standalone Mac purchase. Check Apple’s product page for current availability. The standalone purchase is not an option for Windows or Linux users. As with other editors, test complex PSDs before relying on them for collaboration.

Skylum offers a perpetual desktop license for Windows and macOS, while some creative assets and courses included for one year may renew separately. Check Skylum’s pricing details rather than assuming that every bundled service is perpetual.
Best for: painters who mainly need fast AI photo corrections. Choose another app for extensive layer-based compositing or design work.
6. PaintShop Pro: best Windows-only perpetual alternative
PaintShop Pro is a Windows image editor with perpetual licenses available. Corel’s comparison material describes the license as lasting for the purchased version rather than requiring a Creative Cloud-style subscription. It can suit painters who need photo correction, layers and artwork preparation for print, but there is no macOS or Linux version.

PSD interchange
Open several real files, not just a blank test document. Include text layers, masks, adjustment layers, smart objects, effects and linked assets used in your normal workflow. Compare the result. If appearance matters more than editability, export a flattened copy for delivery while keeping the native project file.
Tablet and brush behavior
Test pressure sensitivity, tilt if your tablet supports it, brush spacing, stabilization and shortcut behavior. An application can support layers and PSD files yet still feel wrong for your hand because its brush engine or tablet settings differ.
Colour and output
Check the colour profile of your working documents and the export settings required by your printer, gallery, publisher or client. A successful software switch is not enough if the exported painting changes colour or loses the intended resolution.
Local backups
Save the native project file, keep a second copy and export a flattened version before major format conversions. With browser-based Photopea, save before closing the tab to avoid losing unsaved work.
