There is an important qualification: free does not mean the same thing for every app here. Some are open source, some are desktop freeware, some are free commercial apps, some show advertising or sell premium materials, and Sketchbook is free on mobile but paid on current Windows and macOS desktops. The right choice also depends on whether you want pixel-based painting, vector art, photo editing, quick sketches, comics, animation, or a browser-only workflow.
Quick answer: which free drawing app should you choose?
| If you want to… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Paint, illustrate, draw comics, or animate on a computer | Krita | The strongest all-round raster painting and illustration tool. |
| Combine vector design, pixel editing, and layouts | Affinity by Canva | A major current free option for design-oriented work, rather than natural-media painting. |
| Paint with an Apple Pencil or on a touchscreen | Adobe Fresco | Free raster, vector, and live brushes for iPad and Windows; no Android version. |
| Sketch with the least distracting interface | Sketchbook | Approachable tools, clean canvas, rulers, symmetry, and predictive strokes—but desktop Pro is paid. |
| Make logos, icons, diagrams, or scalable line art | Inkscape | Open-source vector drawing centered on editable paths and SVG. |
| Draw over photos or edit images as part of the process | GIMP or Photopea | Both are stronger at image manipulation and compositing than pure painting. |
| Create manga or comic pages | MediBang Paint | Panels, screentones, page management, brushes, and collaboration features. |
| Use a modest Windows or Mac computer | FireAlpaca | A comparatively focused desktop painting application with comic and perspective tools. |
| Draw on Android or create a drawing-process video | ibisPaint X | Mobile-first manga and illustration tools with recorded drawing processes. |
| Paint with a minimal natural-media workflow | MyPaint | Distraction-free sketching and brush experimentation, although its stable release is old. |
| Keep things simple on Windows | Paint.NET or Artweaver Free | Easy raster editing or traditional-media-style brushes, respectively. |
| Use a Chromebook or locked-down computer | Photopea | Runs in a browser without installation. |
This is an editorial recommendation by workflow, not a claim that one application can outperform every other app in every situation. A vector editor and a painting program solve different problems.
What kind of drawing are you doing?
The word drawing covers several fundamentally different jobs. Identify yours before downloading anything.
Raster painting and sketching
Raster artwork is made from pixels. It is the natural choice for pencil and ink brushes, digital painting, concept art, coloring, textured strokes, photo editing, and most character illustration. Raster programs let you paint directly onto a canvas and usually offer layers, opacity, blending modes, masks, and brush engines.
Choose Krita, Fresco, Sketchbook, MediBang Paint, FireAlpaca, MyPaint, ibisPaint X, Artweaver Free, or Paint.NET when this is your main work.
Vector drawing
Vector artwork is built from paths, curves, and shapes rather than fixed pixels. A logo, icon, diagram, lettering project, or technical illustration can be enlarged without becoming blocky. Bézier curves and editable nodes provide precision, but vector freehand strokes do not behave exactly like a soft, blending paintbrush.
Choose Inkscape or Affinity by Canva when clean scaling, geometry, typography, and editable paths matter most.
Natural-media simulation
Some brush engines imitate pencil, watercolor, oil, charcoal, pastel, or ink. This can make a stylus feel more expressive, but the result still depends on the brush settings, tablet, canvas, and your technique. Software can provide pressure response, texture, stabilization, symmetry, perspective guides, and a deep undo history; it cannot create artistic skill by itself.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Comics and manga
Comic production benefits from more than a good pencil brush. Look for panel tools, page management, screentones, perspective rulers, speech balloons, line stabilization, layers, and reliable export. MediBang Paint and Krita are the strongest fits in this list, while ibisPaint X is especially convenient on mobile.
Photo-assisted drawing
If you will import references, trace or mask photographs, retouch images, composite multiple elements, or create textures, GIMP, Photopea, and Affinity by Canva may be more useful than a painting-first program. Krita and Fresco can also import and work with images, but that is not their central identity.
Animation and timelapse
Krita includes animation-related tools, Fresco offers basic animation and motion-path workflows, and FireAlpaca includes animation features. ibisPaint X is notable for recording the drawing process as a video. These are different capabilities: a frame timeline or onion-skin workflow is not the same as an automatically generated timelapse.
What does free mean?
Use this legend when comparing the recommendations:
- Free and open source: Krita, GIMP, Inkscape, and MyPaint. Their source code is publicly available, and the core programs can be used without purchasing a license.
- Free desktop freeware: FireAlpaca, Paint.NET, and Artweaver Free. They are free to download under their respective licenses but are not open-source projects.
- Free core commercial app: Affinity by Canva and Adobe Fresco. The companies describe the core offerings as free, but account, ecosystem, platform, or optional connected features may still matter.
- Free mobile edition with paid options: MediBang Paint and ibisPaint X. Advertising, premium brushes, cloud features, or other extras may require payment.
- Free mobile version but paid desktop edition: Sketchbook. Do not call current Windows and macOS Sketchbook Pro free simply because the mobile app is free.
- Free browser app: Photopea. It costs nothing to use in the browser, but browser storage and tab stability are different from an installed application.
A time-limited trial is not the same as free software. Also check whether the free version can save the file format, canvas size, layers, and exports that your project needs.
13 best free drawing programs
1. Krita — best overall free drawing software
Best for: Digital painting, illustration, concept art, comics, storyboards, PSD-based workflows, and 2D animation.
Krita is the best default recommendation for most desktop digital artists because it is designed primarily as a professional painting and illustration application rather than as a photo editor with a brush tool added later. Its official feature set includes customizable brushes, brush tagging, layers, masks, selections, transform tools, color management, PSD support, HDR painting, scripting, animation-related tools, and drawing aids.
It is free and open source, with versions for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android tablets. There is no native iPhone or iPad version. The current download information lists 4 GB of RAM as a minimum and 16 GB as recommended, with OpenGL 3.0 or Direct3D 11 graphics support. Large canvases with many layers can require considerably more than the minimum.
As of August 9, 2026, the stable productive-work branch is Krita 5.3.2.1, released June 2, 2026. Krita 6.0.2.1 is available, but the project characterizes the Qt 6 branch as more experimental during the Qt 5-to-Qt 6 transition. For important work, use the stable branch unless you specifically need to test newer changes. See the Krita 5.3.2.1 release notes and official downloads.
Main limitation: The interface can initially overwhelm beginners, Android support is tablet-oriented rather than equivalent to the desktop edition, and its vector and layout tools do not replace a dedicated vector editor.
Use Krita if: you want one serious, no-subscription desktop painting program and are willing to spend a little time learning its dockers, brush presets, layers, and workspace.
2. Affinity by Canva — best free all-in-one design alternative
Best for: Vector illustration, logos, icons, page layouts, pixel editing, print projects, and mixed vector/raster design.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →In October 2025, Canva announced a new Affinity app combining photo editing, vector design, and page-layout tools in a professional application made free for everyone. This is a significant change from older lists that treated Affinity as paid software.
Affinity belongs near the top when “drawing” means design rather than natural-media painting. It is a strong candidate for geometric illustration, lettering, logos, scalable artwork, and projects that move between vector objects and pixel editing. It is not the closest substitute for Krita’s textured brush engine or MyPaint’s minimal painting canvas.
Platform qualification: Affinity is desktop-focused, but supported operating systems, account requirements, current mobile availability, and any Canva-connected or AI-related restrictions should be checked on the current official announcement and download flow before installation. The free core app should not be confused with every Canva service.
Main limitation: It is a design suite, not primarily a natural-media painting program, and the exact free features and platform requirements can change as Canva develops the product.

- New upgraded version: Battery-free Stylus with 8192 Levels Pressure does not require charging, The report rate of the H420X graphic tablet has increased to 300 PPS, making lines quicker and smoother, and feel like a real pen. The pen also has 2 customizable buttons on the side that allow you to switch between right-clicking and the eraser etc instantly
- Graphic design tablet H420X is only 7mm in thickness and 167g in weight. A slim and compact design with a active area of 4.17x2.6 inches and dimension of 6.77x4.3 inches make it perfect for limited desktop space and easy to carry out when on a trip.
- H420X huion drawing tablet is compatible with Windows 7 or later, Mac OS 10.12 or later, and Android 6.0 or later. Huion H420X drawing pad has good compatibility with most drawing software including Adobe Photoshop, Paint tool sai, Corel Painter, Illustrator, Sketchbook, Manga Studio, Clip Studio Paint, Fireworks, Comic Studio, SAI, Krista, Infinite Stratos, Pixologic ZBrush and other major graphics applications, and more. H420X is NOT compatible with iOS.
- H420X computer graphics tablets also can be used for playing OSU games, signing documents, taking notes, and more. No need to install the driver. Just plug and play!
- The note taking tablet is also easier to handwrite write, edit, and annotate with a stylus for online education, e-learning, remote working, or web conference. HUION H420X also is compatible with XSplit, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and more
Use Affinity if: you need one modern application for vector work, pixel editing, and layouts rather than a dedicated sketching experience.
3. Adobe Fresco — best free iPad and touch painting app
Best for: Apple Pencil painting, touchscreen sketching, watercolor- and oil-like brush effects, vector-and-raster combinations, and simple animation.
Adobe Fresco combines raster brushes, vector brushes, and live brushes intended to respond like traditional media. Adobe announced that Fresco was being made completely free and currently presents it as a free professional drawing and painting application.
Fresco is available for iOS/iPadOS and Windows, but not Android. It is therefore one of the clearest choices for an iPad artist who does not want to buy Procreate or subscribe to a desktop creative suite. Adobe account or ecosystem requirements, export options, and connected features should be checked during setup. Adobe’s completely-free wording applies to the core app; do not automatically assume every integration or optional extra is included in every plan.
Main limitation: Android users need another application, and Fresco should not be described as a perfect substitute for every Photoshop or Illustrator feature. File interoperability is useful, but layers, masks, effects, text, and other objects may not transfer identically between programs.
Use Fresco if: you have an iPad or compatible Windows device and want touch-first painting with both live raster-style and vector brushes.
4. Sketchbook — best clean, approachable sketching interface
Best for: Beginners, quick sketches, gesture drawing, clean line work, and artists who dislike crowded interfaces.
Sketchbook emphasizes a natural stylus workflow with customizable brushes, layers, rulers, curved rulers, ellipse and French-curve tools, predictive stroke, and symmetry. It is often the easiest of these applications to open and understand when your goal is simply to sketch.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The free-status detail is essential. Sketchbook is available on mobile through the Apple App Store and Google Play, while current desktop Sketchbook Pro for Windows and macOS is a one-time purchase, not a subscription. The US Mac App Store listing showed $24.99 when checked, but prices vary by country and can change. See the system requirements and the current US Mac App Store listing.
Current listed requirements include Windows 10/11 on x64 or ARM hardware with 8 GB RAM, macOS 12 or later with 8 GB RAM, Android 9 or later, and iOS 14 or later. Confirm the store listing for your exact device.
Main limitation: It is not a free current desktop application. It also offers less of Krita’s depth for animation, complex compositing, and advanced painting workflows.
Use Sketchbook if: you are on a phone or tablet and want a calm, accessible sketchbook—or you are happy to pay once for the desktop edition.

Best for: Logos, icons, diagrams, technical illustrations, typography, lettering, line art, and artwork that must scale cleanly.
Inkscape is a free, open-source vector graphics editor centered on SVG. Its tools include freehand drawing, shapes, text, Bézier curves, Spiro curves, node editing, and other path-based controls. The result is editable geometry rather than a field of painted pixels. The project explains its SVG workflow in its SVG documentation.
Inkscape runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Version 1.4.4 was released May 6, 2026, with crash fixes, bug fixes, performance improvements, a new palette, and Windows-on-Arm installation files, according to the project’s release announcement.
Main limitation: It is not a natural-media painting application. A pressure-sensitive freehand stroke becomes a vector path, so it will not blend or texture like a raster brush unless you use additional effects or combine it with another tool. SVG effects and extensions may also render differently in other applications.
Recommended Free Tools
Use Inkscape if: the finished drawing must remain editable and look sharp at any size.
6. GIMP — best free image editor that can also draw
Best for: Photo-assisted sketches, image cleanup, compositing, masks, textures, resizing, and users who want a broad Photoshop-style raster editor.
GIMP is free and open source. It provides layers, selections, masks, filters, color tools, retouching features, extensibility, and raster brushes. It can certainly draw, but its heritage is image manipulation rather than illustration-first painting. Someone beginning with a blank canvas may find Krita, FireAlpaca, or Sketchbook more direct.
The current stable release listed by GIMP is 3.2.4, released April 17, 2026. The official Windows EXE installer continues to support Windows 10, while the Microsoft Store MSIX build requires Windows 11 or Windows Server 2022. Older Windows versions and 32-bit systems are no longer supported. Check the Microsoft Store packaging notice before choosing an installation method.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMain limitation: GIMP is less immediately comfortable for pure sketching, and PSD support does not guarantee that every Photoshop text layer, adjustment layer, mask, smart object, blend mode, or vector element will transfer perfectly.
Use GIMP if: drawing is one part of a larger photo-editing, compositing, or image-export workflow.
7. MediBang Paint — best free comics and manga workflow
Best for: Manga, comic pages, screentones, panel layouts, page management, collaboration, and cross-device comic projects.
MediBang Paint is built around digital painting and manga creation. Its feature set includes customizable brushes, layers, comic panels, page management, screentones and backgrounds, cloud access, group projects, and PSD support. Desktop versions are free, and mobile versions are available for iPad, iPhone, and Android.

- Work for both hands - Huion Artist Glove with two fingers; The package includes one unit of glove which can be used on both hand, free size; 20cm in length, 8cm in width.
- Anti-fouling design - It can prevent smudges from your hand on a Graphic Tablet, Graphics Monitor or some other items, leaving no more scratch. Note: The glove cannot prevent accidental touching from the touch screen, it just can reduce the friction between your hand and the tablet surface.
- Comfortable Material - Made from Soft Lycra and Nylon, extremely flexible, comfortable to work with; It can reduce friction between your hand and the surface.
- Classic color - The glove is black, peaceful and charming color; And the most important point is that this color is soiling resistant so you do not need to wash it frequently.
- Flexible using - Works perfectly for sketching, inking, coloring and digital drawing on graphics tablets.
The desktop requirements currently list Windows 10 or later and macOS 11 or later. Mobile requirements and store availability can change, so verify the current download page. Basic local drawing is distinct from premium materials, account features, and cloud services.
Do not rely on MediBang cloud as your only archive. Its FAQ warns that exceeding storage capacity can prevent new cloud saves and may eventually result in excess work being deleted. Export important pages locally as native MDP files, PSD, PNG, or TIFF, and keep a second copy elsewhere.
Main limitation: The manga-oriented interface and cloud/premium qualifications may be unnecessary for someone who only wants general painting.
Use MediBang Paint if: your project has panels, screentones, speech balloons, multiple pages, or a comic collaboration component.

Best for: Beginners, anime-style illustration, inking, comic pages, simple animation, and modest Windows or Mac computers.
FireAlpaca is a focused free painting program with customizable brushes, brush textures, line adjustment, layers, animation tools, perspective, halftone, mesh deformation, reference windows, and comic-oriented features. Its smaller scope can be easier to approach than Krita’s extensive workspace.
The publisher currently lists version 2.16.0, with downloads for Windows 10 or later, macOS 12 or later, and Linux distributions including Ubuntu 23.04 or newer, Fedora 36 or newer, and Debian 12 or newer. Check the current download page for distribution-specific details. The standard edition is free; FireAlpaca SE is a separate enhanced product.
Main limitation: It has less depth than Krita in areas such as advanced color management and large production workflows, and feature parity between operating systems should not be assumed.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Use FireAlpaca if: you want a straightforward desktop painting app with comic tools and do not need every feature found in a larger professional suite.
9. Paint.NET — best simple Windows raster editor
Best for: Simple sketches, basic layers, image cleanup, and Windows users who find GIMP too complicated.
Paint.NET has a familiar interface, layers, multiple open images, plugins, color management, and a multithreaded rendering engine. It is a useful simple raster editor, but it is not as strong as Krita for illustration brushes, animation, or professional painting.
The current website lists Paint.NET 5.1.12, dated March 8, 2026. It requires Windows 10 version 21H2 or newer, Windows 11, or Windows Server 2022; a 64-bit CPU with AVX2 and at least four cores; and Direct3D 11 support. The direct download from the official website is free, while the Microsoft Store edition may be paid to support development.
Recommended Free Tools
Main limitation: Windows only, with current hardware requirements that are higher than many old descriptions suggest. Plugin quality and compatibility can vary.
Use Paint.NET if: you want uncomplicated layers and raster editing on a supported Windows computer.
10. Artweaver Free — best Windows beginner option for traditional effects
Best for: Windows beginners, casual sketching, children, and experimenting with traditional-media-style brushes.
Artweaver offers a Free edition alongside Artweaver Plus. It focuses on traditional-media effects, layers, brushes, and an approachable desktop interface. The current official listing shows Artweaver 8.1.6, dated July 5, 2026.

Main limitation: It has a smaller ecosystem and less cross-platform reach than Krita. Do not silently describe Plus-only tools as part of the free edition.
Use Artweaver Free if: you are on Windows and want to explore pencil, paint, or other traditional effects without learning a large professional interface.
11. MyPaint — best distraction-free natural-media sketching
Best for: Freehand sketching, brush experimentation, tablet-friendly painting, and artists who want minimal interface distraction.

The 2.0 series introduced spectral/subtractive color mixing, improved symmetry, expanded brush settings, and additional input controls.
The crucial maintenance qualification is that the latest stable release listed by the project is MyPaint 2.0.1, released May 29, 2020. It remains distinctive and useful, but it should not be presented as a rapidly updated modern suite. Check the project’s release page and your operating system’s packaging before relying on it for a new tablet or recent computer.
Main limitation: The old stable release may create compatibility issues with newer operating systems, tablet drivers, or Linux libraries, and it lacks Krita’s breadth for text, animation, comics, and complex compositing.
Use MyPaint if: a quiet canvas and natural-media brush behavior matter more to you than a large collection of production features.

12. ibisPaint X — best mobile manga and timelapse app
Best for: Android phones and tablets, iPhones and iPads, manga and anime illustration, social-media artwork, and drawing-process videos.
ibisPaint X is the free mobile edition of ibisPaint. Its defining feature is the ability to create a video of the drawing process, making it useful for sharing timelapses as well as producing manga and illustration. It offers a mobile-first collection of brushes, layers, and comic-oriented tools.
The free edition can include advertising, while premium membership and ad-removal options are available. Windows has a separate version with different limits and purchase options, so do not assume that the Windows, iOS, and Android editions have identical licensing or features. Consult the official free and premium information and Windows announcement.
Main limitation: A phone screen is less comfortable for long, complex layer work than a desktop monitor or larger tablet, and free mobile use may include ads or restricted premium features.
Use ibisPaint X if: you draw mainly on a mobile device and want a built-in way to record the making of each sketch.
13. Photopea — best no-install browser alternative
Best for: Chromebook users, school or work computers where installation is blocked, quick PSD work, masking, compositing, and occasional drawing.
Photopea runs in a browser and supports raster and vector editing, including opening and saving PSD files. The developer says files are processed locally on the user’s device by default rather than uploaded automatically. That makes it convenient for quick work, although local browser processing is not a substitute for maintaining backups.
Photopea is closer to a Photoshop-style image editor than a purpose-built painting program. Performance depends on your browser, available memory, GPU, canvas size, and number of layers. Browser storage can be lost if site data or cache is cleared, and a crashed or closed tab can create a different recovery problem from an installed app.
Main limitation: It is not the best choice for a long, brush-heavy painting session or a valuable project stored only in browser data.
Use Photopea if: you need a capable editor immediately on a Chromebook or another computer where you cannot install software.
Best choices by workflow
Best for digital painting
Choose Krita first. It has the broadest illustration-oriented feature set in this list and works on Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android tablets. Choose FireAlpaca if you want a smaller desktop program, Fresco for iPad touch painting, or MyPaint if a minimal interface is more important than current-suite features.
Best for vector art, logos, and scalable line work
Choose Inkscape for the most clearly open-source vector workflow. Consider Affinity by Canva when you also need pixel editing and page layout in the same design application. Neither should be selected merely because you want a soft, blending pencil brush.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBest for comics and manga
Choose MediBang Paint for pages, screentones, panels, and collaboration. Choose Krita for a more general illustration and animation environment, or ibisPaint X when the work is primarily mobile and you want automatic process recording.
Best for mobile drawing
On iPad, start with Adobe Fresco, then consider Sketchbook, ibisPaint, or MediBang Paint. On Android, consider ibisPaint X, MediBang Paint, Sketchbook, or Krita on a supported tablet. Fresco is not an Android option, and Krita is not an iPad or iPhone option.
Best for an old or modest computer
Try FireAlpaca, MyPaint, Artweaver Free, or a supported version of Krita with a sensible canvas size and fewer layers. “Lightweight” is not universal: a 12,000-pixel canvas with hundreds of textured layers can challenge any application. Do not download obsolete installers from random third-party sites just to support an old operating system.
Best for photo-assisted sketches
Choose GIMP for an installed, open-source editor or Photopea when you need a browser-based workflow. Affinity is also worth considering for mixed vector, pixel, and layout projects.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Best for Linux
The strongest native choices are Krita, GIMP, Inkscape, and MyPaint. FireAlpaca also lists current Linux downloads, subject to distribution support. Photopea works in a browser. Paint.NET and Sketchbook Pro should not be recommended as native Linux applications.
Platforms, tablets, and input support
Do you need a graphics tablet?
No. A mouse or trackpad is adequate for vector shapes, logos, photo editing, basic selections, and simple doodles. A pressure-sensitive stylus is strongly preferable for variable line weight, opacity changes, pencil and ink work, brush texture, natural-media simulation, and comfortable long sessions.
Before blaming the application, install the current driver from the tablet manufacturer. Confirm whether the program and driver are using Windows Ink, WinTab, Apple Pencil input, Android stylus input, or another protocol. A tablet can be physically functional while pressure fails in one program because the input mode does not match.
For Windows users, Sketchbook’s documentation specifically notes that Windows Ink must be enabled for stylus pressure sensitivity. MediBang documents separate pressure-detection settings and tablet troubleshooting for Wacom and non-Wacom devices in its FAQ.
If Windows still reports a generic or outdated tablet-related driver after you have tried the manufacturer’s official package, Outbyte Driver Updater is an optional way to check for broader Windows driver issues; it is not required, and the tablet maker’s driver should remain the first choice for proprietary pressure features.
Windows-on-ARM and Chromebooks
Windows-on-ARM compatibility is application- and driver-specific. Sketchbook lists both x64 and ARM hardware support, and Inkscape 1.4.4 added Windows-on-Arm installation files. Do not assume that a third-party tablet driver or every plugin works natively on ARM.
For Chromebooks, Photopea is the safest recommendation because it requires only a browser. Some Chromebooks can run Android apps or Linux applications, but the exact model, ChromeOS version, storage, and stylus support determine whether a particular mobile or Linux program will work well.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Offline work, cloud storage, and backups
Installed applications such as Krita, GIMP, Inkscape, FireAlpaca, Paint.NET, Artweaver Free, MyPaint, and desktop MediBang can generally perform their core drawing work offline after installation. That does not mean every feature is offline: cloud libraries, collaboration, account checks, downloadable materials, synchronization, and online activation can have separate requirements.
Mobile apps may also separate local drawing from cloud storage. MediBang’s cloud capacity warning is especially important for comic pages. Browser applications such as Photopea depend on the browser environment and may lose work if a tab crashes or site data is cleared, even though the editing itself is performed locally by default.

For valuable work, follow this simple rule:
- Save the native working file, such as
.kra,.xcf,.mdp,.pdn, or the application’s native format. - Export a flattened PNG or TIFF at regular intervals.
- Keep a second copy outside the application’s cloud or browser storage.
- Do not treat a synchronized folder as your only backup.
- Before a major update, duplicate the original file and test the copy.
File formats you should understand
| Format | Useful for | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
PNG |
Transparent artwork, web images, and lossless flattened exports. | Usually flattened; layers are not preserved. |
JPEG |
Small flattened photographs and general-purpose images. | Lossy compression can damage line art and repeated edits. |
TIFF |
Print and high-quality raster interchange. | Large files; layer support varies between applications. |
PSD |
Photoshop interchange and layered raster projects. | Support is not perfect. Text, masks, adjustment layers, smart objects, blend modes, and vector content may change. |
SVG |
Scalable vector artwork, logos, icons, and diagrams. | Application-specific effects and extensions may not translate exactly. |
PDF |
Print and document exchange. | Export settings, fonts, color profiles, and transparency need checking. |
Keep the native file as well as the export. Krita uses .kra, GIMP uses .xcf, MediBang Paint uses .mdp, and Paint.NET uses .pdn. Sketchbook has its own native formats and export behavior. A PNG may look correct while silently discarding the layers you need to edit later.
Setup checklist for a better sketch
- Download from the official publisher. This avoids bundled installers, outdated builds, and counterfeit applications.
- Install the tablet driver. Restart the drawing program after installing or updating it.
- Test pressure before starting. Draw a line that changes width or opacity with stylus pressure.
- Choose the correct canvas size. Use the intended pixel dimensions for social media, screen, or print rather than enlarging a tiny sketch later.
- Create separate layers. Keep the rough sketch, clean line work, color, and reference material independent when the workflow needs revisions.
- Use stabilization sparingly. A stabilizer can make long lines cleaner, but too much may introduce lag or remove the loose quality you want.
- Turn on guides only when useful. Perspective, symmetry, rulers, and ellipse tools improve control without replacing observation.
- Save a native working file. Do not rely only on an exported PNG or a browser tab.
- Export a backup. PNG is a practical visual checkpoint; TIFF or PSD may be better for a professional raster exchange.
- Test the final destination. Check print dimensions, color, transparency, and social-media cropping before declaring the sketch finished.
Common problems and how to fix them
Pressure sensitivity does not work
- Confirm the tablet’s current driver is installed from the manufacturer.
- Restart the drawing application.
- Check whether the driver and application should use Windows Ink or WinTab.
- Test the stylus in the operating system’s tablet settings.
- Test another drawing application to separate a hardware problem from an application setting.
- Disable conflicting tablet utilities, overlays, or handwriting software temporarily.
- Check whether your Windows-on-ARM device has a compatible tablet driver.
- If pressure works elsewhere, adjust that application’s tablet-input settings instead of reinstalling everything.
The program crashes or becomes slow
Save a backup, close and reopen the file, reduce the canvas size or layer count, close other GPU- and RAM-intensive applications, and update the graphics driver. Export a flattened copy before changing settings. If you are using an experimental build, move to a stable release; Krita’s distinction between the stable 5.3 branch and more experimental 6.0 branch is a good example of why version choice matters.
A PSD opens incorrectly
Keep the original PSD untouched and export a flattened PNG from the source application so you have a visual comparison. Check text layers, masks, adjustment layers, smart objects, blending modes, and vector layers individually. Save a native copy in the destination application. “PSD support” means that a program can open or export the format; it does not promise complete Photoshop feature compatibility.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You have Windows 10
Check the exact build. Paint.NET requires Windows 10 version 21H2 or newer. GIMP’s official EXE installer supports Windows 10, but its Microsoft Store package requires Windows 11 or Windows Server 2022. Sketchbook Pro supports Windows 10 and 11, and FireAlpaca’s current listing requires Windows 10 or later.
You want an old-computer option
Start with FireAlpaca, MyPaint, Artweaver Free, or Krita using moderate canvas sizes and fewer layers. An old application may install but fail with a modern tablet driver or operating system, so check official compatibility rather than downloading an abandoned installer from an untrusted archive.
Important omissions and outdated recommendations to avoid
Some current-looking roundups still recommend Microsoft Paint 3D. Microsoft deprecated Paint 3D in August 2024 and removed it from the Microsoft Store on November 4, 2024. Existing installations may continue to work, but it should not be recommended as a current download; see Microsoft’s deprecated-features information.
Older lists also commonly make three mistakes: they call Sketchbook simply free without separating mobile from desktop, they mix vector and raster applications without explaining the difference, and they treat mobile and desktop versions of MediBang, ibisPaint, Krita, and Fresco as interchangeable. MyPaint is another case where the workflow remains relevant but the 2020 stable release must be disclosed.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Finally, avoid unsupported claims that an application is universally lightweight, professional, or faster. Performance depends on canvas dimensions, layer count, brush complexity, RAM, GPU acceleration, display resolution, operating system, tablet driver, and—if the tool is browser-based—the browser engine.
Software availability, minimum operating systems, versions, and store pricing in this guide were checked against the supplied sources on August 9, 2026. Prices, mobile requirements, and free-tier limits can change by region, device, and publisher policy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Krita better than GIMP for drawing?
For blank-canvas painting, illustration, comics, and brush-based sketching, Krita is usually the better fit because it is built around digital painting and includes stabilizers, drawing aids, animation tools, and extensive brush customization. GIMP is the better choice when drawing is part of photo editing, masking, compositing, retouching, or general raster image preparation. Both are free and open source.
Is Sketchbook really free?
The mobile version is free through the Apple App Store and Google Play. Current Windows and macOS Sketchbook Pro editions are one-time purchases rather than free desktop software; the US Mac App Store listing showed $24.99 when checked, but regional prices can change.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Adobe Fresco is the strongest default recommendation for a free iPad painting app, particularly if you want raster, vector, and live brushes with Apple Pencil input. Sketchbook, ibisPaint X, and MediBang Paint are also useful. Krita does not have a native iPad or iPhone version.
Which free drawing app works on Android?
ibisPaint X, MediBang Paint, and Sketchbook are the most straightforward mobile choices. Krita is available for supported Android tablets, but its Android experience is tablet-oriented and not equivalent to its desktop edition. Fresco is not an Android option.
What is the best free software for manga?
MediBang Paint is the best specialized choice for manga and comics because it includes panel, page, screentone, background, and collaboration workflows. Krita is a stronger general illustration alternative, while ibisPaint X is particularly convenient for mobile manga and recorded drawing processes.
What is the best free Photoshop alternative for drawing?
For installed open-source raster editing, choose GIMP. For a browser-based PSD-compatible editor, choose Photopea. For painting-first work, Krita is generally a better fit than either one. Affinity by Canva is worth considering for mixed vector, pixel, and layout projects, subject to its current platform and account requirements.
Is Inkscape good for hand drawing?
It is good for editable freehand vector paths, logos, line art, lettering, and scalable illustrations. It is not the best choice for a soft pencil, blending paint, or textured natural-media brushwork. Choose Krita, Fresco, or MyPaint for pixel-based painting.
Can these free apps open PSD files?
Krita, GIMP, MediBang Paint, and Photopea support PSD workflows, and other applications may import or export PSD in some form. Compatibility is not perfect: text, masks, adjustment layers, smart objects, blend modes, and vector elements can change. Keep the original PSD and a native copy in the destination program.
Do I need a graphics tablet to use drawing software?
No. A mouse or trackpad works for vector shapes, photo editing, selections, and simple doodles. A pressure-sensitive tablet is strongly preferable for expressive line weight, opacity, pencil and ink work, textured brushes, and comfortable long sessions. Install the manufacturer’s current driver and match the application’s input protocol, such as Windows Ink or WinTab.
Which options work offline?
Installed programs such as Krita, GIMP, Inkscape, FireAlpaca, Paint.NET, Artweaver Free, MyPaint, and desktop MediBang can generally handle core drawing offline. Cloud libraries, collaboration, account features, and downloadable materials may still require internet access. Photopea runs in the browser and processes files locally by default, but browser storage is not a dependable backup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhich free drawing programs are open source?
Krita, GIMP, Inkscape, and MyPaint are open-source projects. FireAlpaca, Paint.NET, and Artweaver Free are free desktop freeware but are not open source. Fresco and Affinity are free core commercial applications, while MediBang Paint and ibisPaint X have free editions with paid options.
What is best for an old laptop?
Try FireAlpaca, MyPaint, Artweaver Free, or Krita with a moderate canvas and fewer layers. Paint.NET can be approachable but its current release requires a 64-bit AVX2-capable CPU with at least four cores and Direct3D 11. Check official requirements rather than assuming an old computer will run a current build.
What should I use on a Chromebook?
Photopea is the safest general recommendation because it runs in a browser without installation. Some Chromebooks also support Android or Linux applications, but the exact model, ChromeOS version, storage, and stylus support determine whether a particular app will work well.
Which programs support animation or timelapse?
Krita includes animation-related tools, Fresco offers basic animation and motion-path workflows, and FireAlpaca includes animation features. ibisPaint X is especially notable for recording the drawing process as a video. These are not identical features: a frame timeline and onion skinning differ from an automatically generated timelapse.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Which choices have ads or cloud limits?
MediBang Paint and ibisPaint X have free editions with premium features, advertising, or paid options. MediBang’s cloud storage has capacity limits, so export important work locally. Mobile store listings and cloud terms can change, making it safer to check the publisher’s current pricing and storage information before committing to an account-based workflow.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Download Krita first if you want serious free desktop painting. Choose Fresco for an iPad, Inkscape for vector art, Sketchbook for an uncluttered mobile sketchbook, MediBang Paint for comics, FireAlpaca for a focused desktop app, GIMP or Photopea for photo-assisted work, and ibisPaint X for mobile manga and timelapse videos. Whichever you choose, a compatible stylus driver, sensible canvas size, native-file backup, and regular exports will improve your results more reliably than chasing a supposedly perfect app.
