Homemade ornaments can make a Christmas tree feel collected rather than store-bought. This curated gallery offers 82 ideas, from quick paper and ribbon projects to nature-inspired decorations and keepsakes, with practical notes to help you choose. Treat the number as this collection’s editorial count, not as a claim about the current contents of any legacy page.
Choose a project based on your time, materials, skill level, desired style, and whether children or pets can reach the tree. Not every idea is free, edible, pet-safe, or suitable for toddlers; check the project notes before you begin.
A decorated purchased wood shape or clear ball can be a worthwhile DIY project, but it is more accurate to call it a decorated blank than a fully homemade ornament.
Choose an ornament before you start
| If you want… | Start with… |
|---|---|
| A quick project | Ribbon trees, clear-fill ornaments, cinnamon bundles, or ready-made pom-poms |
| No oven or baking | Paper, felt, painted wood blanks, buttons, or recycled cardboard |
| A group project with children | Paper stars, felt shapes, painted mini canvases, or large cardboard ornaments; adults should handle heat and sharp tools |
| A rustic tree | Pinecones, wood slices, twigs, cinnamon sticks, acorns, and dried leaves |
| A yearly keepsake | Handprints, paw prints, photographs, maps, initials, dates, or embroidered samplers |
| Upcycled materials | Old cards, cardboard tubes, bottle caps, corks, jar lids, puzzle pieces, or cardboard |
| Lower-risk materials around pets | Large, securely made felt, fabric, paper, or wood shapes kept out of reach |
| Reusable ornaments | Wood, felt, fabric, clay, metal, or fully dried and sealed dough |
How to read the project notes
Each idea gives an approximate active time, difficulty, suggested audience, durability, materials, a short method, and a safety note. Drying, baking, curing, and setting can add time. Even an easy craft may need adult help if it uses an oven, hot glue, wire, glass, small parts, or sharp tools.

How to prepare foraged pinecones
Craft-store pinecones may need little preparation. Foraged cones require inspection and cleaning. An extension response recommends discarding moldy, wet, or heavily infested cones, brushing off dirt, soaking in a 1:1 water-and-white-vinegar solution for at least 30 minutes or overnight, rinsing, and drying. It suggests drying at about 200°F for approximately one hour while monitoring closely. This is practical preparation advice, not a guarantee that every pest or pathogen has been eliminated. Cones may close while wet and reopen as they dry. Extension guidance explains this process and the opening-and-closing behavior.
If you move pinecones, bark, or other plant parts across state or national borders, check local rules first. USDA APHIS guidance notes that plant material can carry hidden pests and pathogens and may be subject to restrictions.

Ten feature tutorials
1. Salt-dough keepsake ornament
- Combine 2½ cups all-purpose flour, ½ cup kosher salt, and 1 cup warm water. Use the Food Network Kitchen salt-dough ornament recipe for its baking directions rather than guessing at a temperature or time.
- Roll the dough to about ¼ inch thick, cut a shape, and make the hanging hole before baking.
- For a handprint or paw print, press gently and avoid very thin edges.
- Cool completely before painting and let paint and sealer cure before packing.
Important: salt dough is decorative, not edible. The University of Nebraska–Lincoln cautions that raw flour is not automatically safe because it may not have been treated to kill pathogens. Keep dough and finished ornaments away from children and pets who may chew them.
2. Paper star with a painted edge
- Trace and cut two matching stars from cardstock.
- Score a light center line on each and fold slightly for dimension.
- Glue the centers together, leaving the points free, or add a narrow spacer between the layers.
- Paint the edge, let it dry, punch a hole, and add thread.
Use heavyweight cardstock for repeated seasonal storage. Keep the star away from hot bulbs.
3. Pinecone animal
- Prepare a dry, clean pinecone; reject cones with mold, pests, or persistent dampness.
- Sketch wings, ears, a beak, or a neck on felt or cardstock.
- Attach the pieces securely; for heavy parts, use a mechanical tie or stronger fastening rather than relying on a large blob of hot glue.
- Let everything dry and test the hanger on a sturdy branch.
4. Dried citrus slice ornament
- Slice citrus evenly so pieces dry at a similar rate.
- Dry the slices until firm and no longer soft or moist in the center, following the directions for your chosen dehydrating or oven-drying method.
- Cool completely, then thread twine through a hole near the rind.
- Store dry and inspect before reusing. Discard slices with moisture, mold, or an off odor.
Dried citrus is decorative, not a reliable long-term food gift or pet treat. It is flammable, so keep it away from bulbs and other heat sources.
5. No-sew felt ornament
- Cut two matching felt shapes, such as a mitten, tree, or snowman.
- Apply craft glue around the edge, leaving an opening.
- Add a little stuffing, close the opening, and let the adhesive cure.
- Add painted or securely stitched details and a ribbon loop.
Felt is soft and shatter-resistant, but loose yarn, stuffing, buttons, sequins, and bells can still be swallowed.
6. Clear-fill ornament
- Choose a purchased clear blank; a shatter-resistant plastic version is preferable around children or animals.
- Fill it with paper scraps, large pom-poms, a photograph, or fully dry citrus.
- Close the cap firmly and test that it does not separate when gently lifted by the hanger.
- Write the year on a paper tag or the outside.
Do not overfill the ball. A little empty space makes the contents visible and reduces pressure on the cap.
7. Painted wood-slice keepsake
- Wipe a dry wood slice and sketch a design lightly in pencil.
- Paint the background, then add a name, date, map, handprint, or landscape.
- Let each coat dry before adding details.
- Use a compatible sealer only after the paint cures, following the label for ventilation and handling.
Use a light design on the front and securely attach a hanger on the back.

8. Upcycled foil or cardboard ornament
- Cut a shape from clean, sturdy cardboard.
- Cover it with craft foil, paper, or paint. Fold foil edges around the back rather than leaving them exposed.
- Add a leaf, star, initial, or other small design.
- Reinforce the hanging hole with a second cardboard layer or paper tab.
Upcycling can reduce the need for new materials, but pieces covered in glue, plastic, glitter, or sealant may not be recyclable at the end of their life.
9. Button tree
- Draw a triangle on cardstock, felt, or a wood blank.
- Arrange buttons from large at the bottom to small at the top.
- Glue each button individually and let the ornament dry flat.
- Add a trunk and a hanger through a reinforced point.
Keep button ornaments high in homes with young children or pets, and replace any button that loosens.
10. Beaded star
- Sketch a star template and shape craft wire around it.
- Thread large beads onto selected sides, leaving enough bare wire to close the shape.
- Twist the ends together at the back and fold the sharp tip inward.
- Attach a separate loop and check for sharp edges and excess weight.
This reusable design is adult-led because it uses wire and small beads.
Edible, scented, and food-like ornaments
Distinguish actual food ornaments from decorations made with food ingredients. Gingerbread cookies, popcorn, cranberries, and hard candy may be edible in the right preparation and storage context, but a decorative recipe should not be assumed shelf-stable or safe to eat. Label salt dough, cinnamon dough, beans, spices, faux cookies, and candy-style crafts Not for eating.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warns about small parts, sharp or breakable decorations, and ornaments that resemble food. For actual edible ornaments or food gifts, follow ordinary food-safety practices and provide the product name, storage instructions, and an appropriate best-by date when relevant, as advised in USDA holiday guidance.
Safety before the ornament reaches the tree
- Small parts: Buttons, beads, sequins, bells, googly eyes, and some pipe-cleaner details can choke or injure. Keep them away from children under 3 and pets that chew.
- Heat and sharp tools: Adults should handle ovens, hot-glue guns, craft knives, clippers, pliers, spray sealants, and hard-candy projects.
- Artificial snow: Aerosol snow can irritate lungs if inhaled. Follow the label and use it with suitable ventilation; see CPSC holiday-decoration guidance.
- Paint and sealers: Do not assume paint, glue, glitter, varnish, or sealant is non-toxic or food-safe. Follow the product label and let coatings cure fully.
- Pets: Large, soft, firmly attached materials are generally lower-risk than glass, wire, tinsel, ribbon loops, small beads, bells, or edible ornaments. No homemade ornament is pet-safe if an animal can chew and swallow it.
- Weight: Put heavy ornaments near the trunk or on sturdy branches. Keep fragile, sharp, and small-part ornaments higher when children or pets can reach lower branches.
Can homemade ornaments go on a lit tree?
Yes, if the ornament, tree, and lights are suitable, but handmade does not mean fire-resistant. Keep paper, dried fruit, cotton, yarn, ribbon, and greenery away from hot bulbs and other heat sources. Never use candles as tree ornaments.
The National Fire Protection Association recommends keeping a tree at least three feet from heat sources, using lights listed by a qualified testing laboratory, replacing damaged cords, and turning lights off before leaving home or going to bed. Follow the light manufacturer’s instructions for strand connections and outlet loading. CPSC seasonal guidance limits connected sets of incandescent lights; LED products and newer systems may have different instructions, so follow the product label.
Make the tree look intentional
- Rustic: Combine wood slices, twigs, pinecones, cinnamon, and natural twine.
- Colorful: Repeat two or three bright colors across felt, pom-poms, painted blanks, and paper.
- Minimalist: Use one palette, such as white and kraft paper or wood and dried citrus.
- Vintage: Pair old cards, buttons, sheet music, book pages, and bottle caps.
- Whimsical: Mix animals, toy drums, doughnuts, gumball-machine shapes, and tiny houses.
- Sentimental: Repeat names, dates, photographs, handprints, maps, or short family messages.
A mixed-material tree feels more cohesive when a color, ribbon, wood tone, or metallic accent repeats. Leave some negative space so small handmade pieces remain visible.
Common problems and how to fix them
Salt dough cracks, puffs, or warps
Uneven thickness, trapped air, excessive heat, and thin handprint edges can contribute. Roll evenly, avoid very thick shapes, make the hanging hole before baking, and use the recipe’s directions. Let the ornament cool before judging it. Remake a structurally split piece rather than trusting a heavy glue repair.
Paint or glue stays tacky
Use thinner coats, allow more drying time, improve ventilation, and do not apply sealer until the surface has cured. Keep pieces separate while they dry.
Pinecones close after washing
This can happen when a cone absorbs moisture. Let it dry fully; it should reopen as it dries. Do not glue or paint it while damp.
Hot glue strings or weak bonds
Use less glue, hold parts together until set, and trim strings after cooling. Use a mechanical attachment for heavy pieces rather than relying on glue alone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDried citrus develops mold
The pieces may not have been fully dry or may have been packed warm. Discard anything soft, damp, moldy, or unpleasant-smelling; do not try to rescue it.
Glitter sheds
Use glitter glue or a controlled application instead of loose glitter, let it cure, and use only a compatible sealer. Loose glitter is a poor choice around toddlers, chewing pets, food preparation, or people sensitive to airborne particles.
An ornament falls from the tree
Use a secure loop matched to the ornament’s weight and test it by lifting the ornament by the loop. Use branch clips or wire for heavier objects and keep them away from branch tips.
Store handmade ornaments for the next season
- Let paint, glue, dough, and sealant dry or cure completely before packing.
- Wrap fragile ornaments individually in acid-free tissue or clean soft paper. Keep glitter-heavy pieces from rubbing against fabric or photographs.
- Store paper, felt, cardboard, and dough ornaments in a cool, dry, stable place—not a damp basement, hot attic, garage, radiator shelf, or sunny window.
- Use divided compartments for beads, glass, clay, and small keepsakes so they do not knock together.
- Label the maker, year, event, or recipe on a tag rather than writing on a sentimental surface.
FAQ
What are the easiest homemade Christmas ornaments?
Paper snowflakes, ribbon trees, ready-made pom-pom ornaments, cinnamon-stick bundles, and clear ornaments filled with paper scraps need relatively little shaping. Check the materials and safety notes, especially if children will help.
Which homemade ornaments are best for kids?
Paper stars, paper chains, large cardboard shapes, felt projects, and painted mini canvases can work well with supervision. Adults should handle ovens, hot glue, sharp tools, glass blanks, wire, and small parts.
Are salt-dough ornaments edible or safe for pets?
No. Treat salt dough as decoration, not food, and keep it away from children and pets who may chew it. Follow a tested recipe’s preparation directions and let pieces dry fully before storage.
How do I make homemade ornaments last?
Choose durable materials such as wood, felt, fabric, clay, or sturdy cardstock; let finishes cure completely; protect pieces from moisture; and store them individually or in divided compartments in a cool, dry, stable place.
Can I put homemade ornaments on a lit Christmas tree?
Yes, but keep flammable materials away from hot bulbs and other heat sources. Use lights according to their manufacturer’s instructions, replace damaged strands, and turn lights off before leaving home or going to bed, following NFPA guidance.
