How to use a pumpkin stencil
1. Choose the pattern and pumpkin
For detailed patterns, select the design first. Look for a firm pumpkin with no soft spots, minimal bruising, a sturdy stem, and a flat base. Shape, wall thickness, and usable surface matter more than color.

2. Resize and attach the stencil
- Measure the usable front surface, not the full circumference.
- Print the stencil at multiple sizes and choose the largest that leaves a margin around the design.

3. Prepare and transfer
- Protect the work surface and cut an opening in the top or bottom with a purpose-made pumpkin saw.
- Scoop out seeds and stringy pulp, then scrape the inside smooth enough for light to pass through.
- Thin the inner wall only behind detailed areas; keeping the rest thicker helps the pumpkin stay strong.
- For pin-prick transfer, pierce along the pattern with a pushpin or poker, then remove the paper and connect the dots if needed.
- Alternatively, use transfer paper for detailed designs or trace with a marker for broad silhouettes.

4. Read the pattern and carve safely

Every enclosed shape that should remain must connect to the surrounding pumpkin with an uncut bridge. Letter centers, pupils, teeth, and enclosed moons can otherwise fall out. Widen fragile bridges, especially on soft or ridged pumpkins. For multi-depth patterns, follow the stencil legend rather than treating every line as a cut-through mark.
Tools, lighting, and safety
