The best way to reuse old clothes is to match the garment to the project. Use stretchy T-shirts for no-sew bags or yarn, preserve sentimental graphics in pillows or quilts, save sturdy denim pockets for organizers, and reserve clean woven fabric for gift bags or insulated hot pads. Before cutting anything, check whether the clothing could be repaired, sold, swapped, or donated instead.

Reuse sits above recycling in the EPA waste hierarchy, but not every garment belongs in a craft project. The EPA’s current textile data page reports 2018 estimates of 17 million tons of textiles generated, 2.5 million tons recycled, and 11.3 million tons landfilled; these are not measurements for 2026. The projects below turn suitable garments into useful objects without pretending that every old shirt is safe or suitable for every use.

Before cutting: sort old clothes by condition and fabric

Make three decisions first: Can someone still wear it? What is it made from? and Which parts are still strong and useful? Cutting up a wearable garment is usually the least valuable form of reuse.

Garment condition or material Good destinations Usually avoid
Clean, wearable, gently used Repair, resale, clothing swap, or donation Cutting it up before checking whether someone can use it
Sentimental T-shirt with an intact graphic Memory pillow, quilt panel, or appliqué Turning the whole shirt into yarn
Stretchy cotton jersey T-shirt tote, T-shirt yarn, pillow cover, or supervised pet tug toy Unstabilized quilt blocks or heavily loaded bags
Denim or canvas Pocket organizer, apron, tote, pouch, or patch Sewing through rivets or several bulky seams at once
Cotton, flannel, linen, or other woven fabric Quilt, gift bag, wrapping cloth, or insulated project Mixing fabrics with very different shrinkage without prewashing
Sweater or other knit Pillow cover, basket liner, mittens, or soft gift bag Projects that need precise, stable dimensions unless the knit is lined
Torn or heavily worn but clean Cleaning cloths, small patches, stuffing, or rug strips Structural projects that require strong fabric
Wet, moldy, oily, chemically contaminated, or strongly odorous Local disposal guidance or a program that specifically accepts it Household use, donation, pet toys, pillows, or bedding

Wash and completely dry fabric before using it. Check the care label for elastane, vinyl, foam, coatings, metal hardware, and heat-transfer graphics. These materials can stretch, melt, shrink, or react differently to an iron or fusible adhesive.

For donation, contact the organization first. The EPA recommends donating gently worn clothing and checking directly with charities about damaged garments. Textile collection rules vary. For example, New York City’s official program asks for clean, dry, odorless textiles in bags; that requirement should not be assumed to apply identically everywhere.

Quick comparison: which old-clothes project should you choose?

Project Best clothing Sewing required Approximate time Best for Main caution
No-sew T-shirt tote Medium- or heavyweight T-shirt No 10–30 minutes Fast, useful upcycling Thin jersey stretches and may not support heavy loads
Memory pillow or quilt Graphic T-shirts, jerseys, baby clothes, uniforms Hand or machine sewing Pillow: varies; quilt: substantial project Preserving sentimental clothing Stabilize stretchy fabric before cutting
T-shirt-yarn braided rug Cotton jersey shirts Optional, depending on construction Varies with size Using many worn shirts Uneven tension can make the rug curl or buckle
Denim pocket organizer Jeans with intact pockets Hand or machine sewing; adhesive is possible Varies Storing small household items Heavy contents need strong stitching and wall hardware
Gift bag or wrapping cloth Woven cotton, linen, scarves, shirts, tablecloths No-sew or machine sewing Varies Reusable gift presentation Stretchy or stained fabric may need lining
Braided pet tug toy Clean, soft cotton T-shirts No Short project Supervised interactive play Inspect constantly; it is not an indestructible chew toy
Insulated patchwork hot pad Clean woven cotton, flannel, or linen scraps Machine sewing recommended Varies Useful fabric-scrap project Denim or cotton alone is not adequate heat insulation

1. Make a no-sew T-shirt tote bag

Best for: a medium- or heavyweight T-shirt that is no longer wearable but still has usable fabric or a graphic. Skill: beginner. Tools: sharp scissors, and optionally a washable marker, ruler, or bowl.

This is the quickest project on the list. A standard crew-neck or V-neck shirt is easiest to cut. Raglan-sleeve shirts can leave an awkwardly shaped opening, as noted in this Howcast tutorial.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Wash and completely dry the shirt.
  2. Cut off both sleeves just outside the sleeve seams.
  3. Cut away the collar to create the bag opening. Trace around a bowl if you want a smooth curved opening.
  4. Remove the bottom hem.
  5. Cut the lower edge into evenly spaced strips about ½ to 1 inch wide. Keep the cuts similar in length and width so the bottom closes evenly.
  6. Tie the front and back strips together across the bottom.
  7. Turn the bag inside out. If gaps remain, tie neighboring strip pairs together in a second row of cross-knots.
  8. Stretch the armholes and opening gently to smooth the edges.

The LSU AgCenter instructions use fringe cuts approximately ½ to 1 inch apart and estimate about 30 minutes for the project. Other versions take closer to 10 minutes depending on the cutting pattern.

What to expect from the finished tote

Thin T-shirt jersey stretches substantially. Use a lightweight tote for gym clothes, library books, beach items, or light shopping rather than assuming it is a heavy-duty grocery bag. The knotted bottom can also develop holes if the fabric is thin or the load is heavy. For a stronger version, line the shirt with woven cotton or sew the bottom closed if you can sew.

If the shirt has a meaningful graphic, do not cut through it just to make the bag. Cut the graphic out as a panel and sew or fuse it onto a sturdier bag instead.

2. Preserve sentimental clothes in a memory pillow or quilt

Best for: band shirts, sports jerseys, baby clothes, uniforms, concert shirts, or any garment whose graphic or label matters more than its original shape.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A memory pillow is the more approachable option. A quilt preserves more garments but requires careful planning, stabilization, consistent blocks, and substantially more sewing. Before cutting a rare or irreplaceable garment, photograph it and decide exactly which parts must remain visible.

Memory-pillow method

  1. Wash and dry the shirt according to its care instructions.
  2. Photograph the front, back, label, pocket, and any other meaningful detail.
  3. Choose whether to preserve the front graphic, back graphic, pocket, sleeve, logo, or label.
  4. Place interfacing on the wrong side of the graphic area before cutting. Interfacing prevents stretchy jersey from distorting and helps the panel retain its shape. The Craftsy T-shirt quilt guide explains this stabilization step.
  5. Cut a square or rectangle larger than the desired finished panel so you have room for seams and trimming.
  6. Add a woven cotton backing if the shirt is especially thin or stretchy.
  7. Place the front panel and backing right sides together. Sew around the edges, leaving an opening for turning.
  8. Turn the cover right side out, insert the pillow form, and close the opening by hand or machine.

For a removable cover, use an envelope-style back or zipper rather than permanently closing the pillow. A fusible-webbing approach can also work for appliqué, but test a scrap first if the shirt contains vinyl or a heat-transfer design. Good Housekeeping’s T-shirt project coverage includes pillow and fusible options.

Quilt method

  1. Inventory every garment before cutting. Note which graphics are most important and how many panels you can realistically use.
  2. Make a paper layout so important logos, names, or dates are not accidentally cropped.
  3. Stabilize each T-shirt panel with interfacing.
  4. Cut panels to consistent finished dimensions, leaving seam allowance.
  5. Use sashing or plain woven fabric to fill the spaces between panels of different sizes.
  6. Sew the quilt top, then add backing and batting, quilt the layers, and bind the edges.

Prewash and press mixed fabrics before cutting. Cotton jersey, woven cotton, denim, and synthetic fabrics can shrink, stretch, and wear at different rates. If the shirts are fragile, a wall hanging or occasional-use throw may be kinder to them than a frequently washed bed quilt.

3. Turn T-shirts into yarn for a braided rug

Best for: cotton jersey shirts that are too worn, stained, or numerous to use intact. This project can also produce a small mat, coaster, basket, or woven piece instead of a full-size rug.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

T-shirt yarn is made by cutting connected strips from the lower body of a shirt and stretching the jersey so its edges curl into a tubular cord. A method from Craft Passion uses strips at least 15 mm wide and leaves an approximately 1-inch uncut margin so the strips can be connected diagonally into one continuous strand.

  1. Lay the shirt flat and cut horizontally from underarm to underarm.
  2. Remove the bottom hem. If you want a smooth yarn, also remove heavily printed or embroidered sections.
  3. Fold the fabric and cut parallel strips roughly 15 mm to 1 inch wide, leaving an uncut margin at one side.
  4. Unfold the fabric and cut diagonally between neighboring strips across the uncut margin. This turns the loops into one continuous strip.
  5. Stretch the strip gently along its length. The edges should curl inward.
  6. Roll the strip into a ball.
  7. Braid, crochet, weave, or coil the yarn into the chosen project.

For a braided rug, use fabrics of broadly similar weight. Keep the braid flexible rather than pulling it extremely tight. Uneven tension can make the finished rug dome, buckle, or curl, according to the tension guidance in this SewGuide rag-rug tutorial.

Start with a coaster or small mat. The amount of yarn from one shirt varies with shirt size, fabric weight, and strip width, so do not assume one shirt will produce a particular rug size. Place a rug pad beneath a finished floor mat to reduce sliding.

4. Build a denim pocket wall organizer

Best for: jeans with intact pockets, belt loops, and sturdy denim. Existing pockets are useful because their openings and much of their reinforcement are already finished.

You can make a small organizer from one or two pairs of jeans or arrange many pockets in rows on a larger backing. Use it for mail, keys, sewing supplies, chargers, craft tools, or children’s small items.

  1. Wash and dry the jeans.
  2. Cut around each pocket while preserving the original pocket opening and topstitching.
  3. Cut a rectangular backing from denim, canvas, or sturdy cotton.
  4. Arrange the pockets by size and intended use before attaching them.
  5. Stitch around the sides and bottom of each pocket, leaving its top open.
  6. Reinforce the upper corners, where heavier objects can pull hardest.
  7. Add a hanging sleeve, dowel, belt-loop hanger, D-rings, or another secure hanging method.

Quilting Digest’s denim organizer instructions show how to arrange cut-out pockets and sew around their existing stitching. A no-sew version can use fabric adhesive or staples on a suitable backing, but adhesive alone is not a reliable choice for heavy tools or a heavily loaded wall organizer.

Sewing through denim safely

Do not force a machine through rivets, metal buttons, or several thick belt-loop layers. Use an appropriate denim needle, slow down at bulky seams, and hand-turn the needle over especially thick areas. Jeans with elastane are not identical to rigid denim and may stretch more than expected. Finish raw edges by turning them under, zigzagging, or covering them with binding if fraying will be a problem.

5. Make reusable fabric gift bags or wrapping cloths

Best for: clean shirts, scarves, tablecloths, pillowcases, sheets, linen, and lightweight woven garments. The fabric can become part of the gift or return to the wrapping supply for repeated use. The EPA has recommended reusable cloth or fabric as an alternative gift-wrapping option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No-sew wrapping cloth

  1. Cut a square large enough to cover the gift with enough fabric for two opposite corners to meet.
  2. Use a scarf, bandana, pillowcase, or material with finished edges when possible.
  3. Place the gift in the center.
  4. Tie two opposite corners together, then tie the remaining corners over or around the first knot.
  5. Ask the recipient to return the cloth, or make it part of the gift.

If the old garment is stained, use the cleanest side for visible wrapping or make a lining so the mark is hidden. Do not add fragrance or essential oils to fabric that will be used around food, babies, or people with sensitivities.

Simple sewn gift bag

  1. Cut a rectangle from a shirt body, sleeve, pillowcase, tablecloth, or other suitable fabric.
  2. Fold it in half with right sides together.
  3. Sew both side seams.
  4. Fold or finish the top edge.
  5. Add a drawstring made from a sleeve, hem, ribbon, or fabric strip.
  6. Reinforce the bottom corners if the bag will hold anything heavy.

Woven cotton and linen hold their shape better than stretchy jersey. For a large graphic, position it on the front of the bag before cutting. A sturdy tablecloth can provide enough uninterrupted fabric for several bags; this Good Housekeeping guide describes the basic rectangle, fold, and side-seam method.

6. Braid a T-shirt pet tug toy

Best for: clean, soft cotton shirts and dogs that play interactively without swallowing fabric. This is a supervised tug toy, not an indestructible chew toy.

The American Kennel Club’s instructions use nine strips approximately 20 inches long by 2 inches wide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Cut nine strips approximately 20 by 2 inches.
  2. Tie all nine strips into one secure knot near one end.
  3. Divide them into three groups of three.
  4. Braid the three groups tightly, without pulling so hard that the fabric cuts into itself.
  5. Tie a second secure knot at the other end.
  6. Trim excessively long loose ends.

Pet-toy safety: Inspect the toy before every use and remove it as soon as it frays. Do not use it for a dog that swallows fabric, string, or large pieces. Keep string-like toys away from cats and kittens that might ingest them. Never add buttons, beads, plastic eyes, zippers, or other detachable decorations. The AKC warns that swallowed fabric, particularly long strings, can cause a dangerous obstruction. VCA’s toy-safety guidance also recommends retiring toys when rope is frayed, stuffing is exposed, or pieces can be swallowed.

7. Sew a patchwork hot pad—with proper insulation

Best for: clean cotton shirts, flannel, linen, or other woven scraps. This is the most safety-sensitive project on the list.

Old cotton or denim is not automatically heat-safe. A single layer of fabric can allow enough heat through to burn skin, and some synthetic fibers can melt. If you do not have appropriate insulated batting, make coasters or decorative table mats for warm—not hot—items instead.

The Utah State University Extension hot-pad pattern uses two 9-inch fabric squares, an 8½-inch square of Insul-Bright, and an 8½-inch square of cotton batting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Select clean woven fabric and check the fiber content. Avoid unknown, melting, coated, foamed, or vinyl materials near heat.
  2. Cut two 9-inch fabric squares.
  3. Cut one 8½-inch square of heat-resistant insulated batting and one 8½-inch square of cotton batting.
  4. Layer the materials according to the pattern or the insulation manufacturer’s instructions.
  5. Quilt the layers so the batting stays flat.
  6. Sew around the perimeter, leaving the pattern’s 4-inch turning opening.
  7. Turn the pad right side out, press it carefully, close the opening, and topstitch.

Follow the tested pattern and material instructions rather than assuming that any batting provides the same protection. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has documented burn hazards from oven gloves without adequate thermal protection. A homemade hot pad should never be presented as an oven mitt or used as proof that denim alone can safely handle hot cookware.

Choose the project by your real goal

  • Fastest result: no-sew T-shirt tote or fabric wrapping cloth.
  • Most sentimental value: memory pillow, quilt panel, or appliqué.
  • Most clothing reused: T-shirt-yarn rug or a larger quilt.
  • Best use of denim features: pocket wall organizer.
  • Best no-sew pet project: braided tug toy, with supervision.
  • Most safety-sensitive: insulated hot pad.
  • Best for severely damaged but clean fabric: cleaning cloths, patches, stuffing, or rug strips.

What to do with scraps and unusable clothing

Keep the scraps sorted instead of throwing every leftover piece into one bag:

  • Large, clean pieces: use for patches, appliqué, small pouches, linings, or quilt sections.
  • Narrow jersey strips: braid them into cord or reserve them for a supervised pet toy if the material is clean and appropriate.
  • Denim pockets and belt loops: turn them into organizers, labels, handles, or hanging loops.
  • Small absorbent pieces: use them as cleaning cloths.
  • Unusable textiles: check local textile drop-off, charity, retail take-back, or municipal instructions.

Do not put textiles in a curbside recycling bin unless your local provider explicitly accepts them. The EPA’s recycling FAQ explains that recycling rules differ by community. Textile collection programs commonly require items to be clean, dry, and bagged, but confirm the rules locally. Wet, moldy, oily, chemically contaminated, or strongly odorous garments should not be donated or used in household projects; follow local disposal guidance instead.

Reusing an old garment can reduce the need to buy a new item if the finished project is genuinely useful and used repeatedly. It is not automatically zero-waste: cutting creates scraps, sewing may require new supplies, and a poorly matched project can fail quickly. Choose the simplest project that fits the fabric and the way you will actually use it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I reuse old clothes without sewing?

Yes. The no-sew options include a knotted T-shirt tote, a tied fabric wrapping cloth, and a braided T-shirt pet tug toy. You can also attach denim pockets to a backing with adhesive or staples, but use strong stitching and secure hanging hardware for a loaded organizer.

What old clothes are best for a memory quilt?

Clean T-shirts, jerseys, baby clothes, uniforms, and other garments with meaningful graphics work well. Stabilize stretchy shirt fabric with interfacing before cutting, and make a layout first so important designs are not cropped. If a garment is fragile, consider a pillow or wall hanging instead of a frequently washed quilt.

How do I stop T-shirt fabric from stretching?

Apply interfacing to the wrong side before cutting. A woven cotton backing can add more stability to a thin shirt. Interfacing is especially important for quilt blocks and structured pillow panels.

Can damaged clothing be donated?

Sometimes, but rules vary by charity and textile program. Contact the organization before donating. Many programs require items to be clean and dry, and some do not accept torn, stained, moldy, or strongly odorous clothing.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Can old clothes go in curbside recycling?

Usually not in the United States unless your local recycling provider specifically says it accepts textiles. Look for a local textile drop-off, charity, retailer take-back program, or municipal collection option instead.

Is denim safe for potholders or hot pads?

Denim alone is not sufficient heat-resistant insulation. Use a suitable insulated batting and cotton batting in a tested or established hot-pad construction. Without those materials, make a coaster or table mat for warm items rather than handling hot cookware.

Are homemade T-shirt pet toys safe?

A braided T-shirt toy may be used for supervised interactive play, but it is not safe for every pet or an indestructible chew toy. Inspect it before every use and discard it as soon as it frays or pieces can be swallowed. Do not add detachable decorations.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Keep wearable clothes intact, preserve meaningful graphics, and let the fabric determine the project. Use jersey for totes, yarn, pillows, or supervised tug toys; denim pockets for organizers; woven fabric for wrapping and sewing; and proper insulated batting for anything exposed to heat. When a garment is contaminated or cannot be reused safely, follow local textile or disposal guidance rather than forcing it into a craft.
