Most GIMP users do not need to download a separate DDS plug-in. Official GIMP releases have included built-in DDS support since GIMP 2.10.10. GIMP 3.0 added BC7 import, and GIMP 3.2 added BC7 export. As of August 10, 2026, the official download page lists GIMP 3.2.4 as the current stable release.

For a normal modern installation, the correct workflow is:

  1. Install GIMP from the official GIMP downloads page.
  2. Open the .dds texture with File → Open.
  3. Save your editable work as an .xcf project.
  4. Use File → Export As to create the finished .dds texture.

A separate plug-in is mainly relevant to GIMP 2.8 and earlier, a broken or incomplete package, or a specialized legacy workflow. Installing an old dds.exe into GIMP 3 can cause DLL errors or plug-in conflicts.

First, check your GIMP version

Before searching for a “DDS plug-in,” check whether your copy of GIMP already supports the format. Open GIMP and choose Help → About, or use the equivalent application-information command on your operating system.

The version determines what you should do:

GIMP version Separate DDS plug-in? Recommended action
GIMP 3.2.x No DDS import and export are built in. GIMP 3.2 also provides BC7 export.
GIMP 3.0.x No DDS support is built in, including BC7 import.
GIMP 2.10.10 or later Usually no Test the built-in importer and exporter. Update GIMP instead of installing an old plug-in if possible.
GIMP 2.8 or earlier Usually yes A legacy plug-in may be required, but compatibility and download safety are concerns. Updating GIMP is preferable when possible.
GIMP 2 plug-in used with GIMP 3 Not assumed to work GIMP 3 introduced a new plug-in API. Use the built-in DDS support unless a specific plug-in documents GIMP 3 compatibility.

GIMP integrated DDS support into its core plug-ins in version 2.10.10, released in April 2019. The GIMP 2.10.10 release announcement documents that change. GIMP 3’s release notes also describe the plug-in API changes introduced at the major-version transition.

For the current version, consult the official download page and the GIMP 3.2 release notes. Version availability can vary by operating system and package format.

What is a DDS file?

DDS stands for DirectDraw Surface. It is a texture container commonly used by PC games, game engines, 3D applications, and graphics tools.

A DDS file can contain more than a regular flat image. Depending on how it was created, it may include:

  • Compressed or uncompressed pixel data;
  • RGB or RGBA color information;
  • One-bit or full-range transparency;
  • Mipmap levels for rendering the texture at different distances;
  • Cube maps, such as the six faces of an environment map;
  • Volume textures; and
  • Texture arrays.

That means two files with the .dds extension are not necessarily interchangeable. The compression format, channel layout, alpha behavior, mipmap chain, dimensions, orientation, color interpretation, and engine-specific conventions all affect whether a texture works correctly in a particular game.

GIMP can read and write many DDS variants, but creating a syntactically valid DDS file does not guarantee that Skyrim, Fallout, Morrowind, a modern game engine, or a particular texture viewer will accept the exact settings. The target game’s texture documentation or the format of the original asset should take priority.

How to download GIMP safely

Download GIMP from the official GIMP downloads page. It provides packages for Windows, macOS, and Linux and identifies the current stable release.

Avoid making a random “DDS plug-in download” your first step. Many old tutorials point to unidentified mirrors, old binary files, or GIMP 2.x directories. Those instructions may be obsolete, unsafe, or incompatible with your version of GIMP. The official download page also notes that some store packages are produced by third parties and are not connected with the GIMP team.

After installing GIMP:

  1. Launch the program.
  2. Check the version under Help → About.
  3. Do not install an additional DDS plug-in unless your version or a documented third-party workflow specifically requires it.

How to test built-in DDS support

You can test both import and export without installing anything.

Test opening a DDS file

  1. Start GIMP.
  2. Choose File → Open.
  3. Select a backed-up .dds texture.
  4. Review any import dialog that appears.
  5. Confirm that the dimensions, transparency, orientation, and any mipmap handling are appropriate for the source texture.

If the image opens, GIMP has a working DDS importer. You can proceed to edit it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test DDS export

  1. Open an image or the DDS texture in GIMP.
  2. Choose File → Export As.
  3. Enter a filename ending in .dds, such as texture-test.dds.
  4. Confirm the export.

A DDS export dialog should appear. If it does, DDS export is available and a separate plug-in is unnecessary.

Open and edit a DDS texture in GIMP

Use the following workflow for a game texture:

File → Open → original-texture.dds

Keep the original file untouched. Make a working copy if you need to experiment with dimensions, channels, compression, or mipmaps.

When editing, remember that game textures may use channels for purposes other than ordinary visible color. For example, an alpha channel might contain transparency, gloss, roughness, height, or another packed mask. A normal map should not be treated like a normal photograph, and a grayscale data texture may need different color-management and compression settings from a diffuse color texture.

Preserve the original dimensions unless the target game explicitly permits resizing. Power-of-two dimensions such as 64, 128, 256, and 512 are common requirements in game pipelines, although DDS itself does not universally require square or power-of-two images. Width and height do not necessarily have to be equal.

Save the editable project as XCF

In GIMP, “save” and “export” are different operations:

  • Save or Save As: saves the editable GIMP project, normally as .xcf.
  • Export or Export As: creates an external format such as .dds, .png, or .tga.

After editing, choose:

File → Save As… → texture-edited.xcf

Depending on the GIMP version and the state of the image, you may also see File → Save a Copy. XCF is GIMP’s native work-in-progress format and is designed to preserve layers and other project information that an exported DDS generally cannot preserve.

A safe working pattern is:

original texture.dds
↓ open
edited image in GIMP
↓ save project
texture-edited.xcf
↓ export
texture-edited.dds

Do not overwrite the original DDS until you have inspected and tested the replacement.

Export the finished texture as DDS

  1. Choose File → Export As.
  2. Enter a filename ending in .dds.
  3. Confirm the export.
  4. Choose the compression and other settings in the DDS export dialog.
  5. Click Export.

GIMP 3.2’s DDS exporter includes controls for compression, uncompressed pixel formats, layer handling, vertical flipping, mipmaps, transparency-index handling, mipmap filters, wrap modes, gamma correction, and alpha-test coverage. Not every option is appropriate for every texture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choosing a DDS compression format

Use the format required by the target game or engine. If you are replacing an existing asset, examining the original file with a texture-inspection tool can help identify its format and channel structure.

GIMP option Typical use Important qualification
None Uncompressed output, or an intermediate file that another tool will compress later. Produces larger files. The selected uncompressed pixel format matters.
BC1 / DXT1 Opaque RGB textures or simple one-bit transparency. Small output, but unsuitable for smooth or detailed alpha.
BC2 / DXT3 Older workflows requiring explicit alpha. Less commonly preferred than BC3/DXT5 for smooth alpha.
BC3 / DXT5 Textures requiring smooth alpha, such as foliage, decals, or cutout-related assets. Follow the game’s required alpha convention.
BC3nm / DXT5nm Normal-map workflows that specifically require this channel layout. Do not select it for an ordinary color texture.
BC4 One-channel textures or masks. Only the red channel is stored, so it is unsuitable for ordinary RGB or RGBA artwork.
BC5 Two-channel data, commonly red/green normal-map data. Blue and alpha are ignored. Use only when the target pipeline expects that layout.
BC7 Higher-quality compressed RGB or RGBA textures in modern pipelines. The game or engine must support the expected BC7 format and color interpretation. It is not universally the best choice.

For a simple opaque texture, BC1 may be appropriate if the game expects DXT1. For smooth transparency, BC3/DXT5 is a common legacy choice. For a modern asset, BC7 can provide higher-quality compression, but only the target engine’s specification can determine whether it is valid. GIMP’s DDS export documentation describes these format-specific limitations.

Alpha and transparency: avoid the most common mistakes

Before exporting, inspect whether the image actually has an alpha channel. In the Layers dock, use the layer context menu or the relevant channel controls to verify that transparency is present. An image that looks transparent in GIMP may instead contain a solid background, a layer mask, or indexed transparency that needs to be handled deliberately.

Choose compression based on how the target uses alpha:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • BC1/DXT1: supports opaque pixels and, where alpha is present, one-bit transparency. It cannot preserve smoothly varying transparency in the same way as BC3 or an appropriate BC7 mode.
  • BC3/DXT5: stores full alpha and is common in older game workflows requiring smooth transparency.
  • BC5: stores two channels and ignores blue and alpha, so it is not suitable for a normal RGBA color texture.
  • BC7: can support high-quality RGB/RGBA data, but the target game must support the particular format it expects.

Also check whether the game expects straight alpha, premultiplied alpha, indexed transparency, or a special alpha-test convention. GIMP’s export dialog includes transparency-index and alpha-test-coverage controls in relevant workflows, but those controls do not replace the target engine’s requirements.

Layers and special DDS types

A normal game texture is usually exported from one image or one selected layer. GIMP’s exporter also supports special layer-based output types when the image has the required structure:

  • Selected layer: exports only the active layer.
  • All visible layers: merges visible layers before export.
  • Cube map: requires six same-sized layers with names ending in Front, Back, Left, Right, Top, and Bottom.
  • Volume map: requires same-sized layers but does not require the six fixed cube-map face names.
  • Texture array: requires at least two matching-size layers.

These choices may be disabled until the image and layer structure satisfy the relevant requirements. If an option is unavailable, check layer count, layer names, and matching dimensions rather than trying to force the export.

Mipmaps: generate, preserve, or omit?

Mipmaps are smaller versions of a texture used when the texture appears farther from the camera. Each level is generally half the width and height of the preceding level. They can improve performance and reduce shimmering, but the correct workflow depends on the game or engine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GIMP’s DDS exporter provides:

  • No mipmaps;
  • Generate mipmaps; and
  • Use existing mipmaps.

Choose Generate mipmaps when the target engine expects the DDS file to contain them and does not create them during asset import or packaging. Choose No mipmaps when the game’s pipeline generates them later. Use Use existing mipmaps only when the expected lower-resolution levels are present, correctly ordered, and have the required dimensions.

When generating mipmaps, inspect the available filter, wrap-mode, gamma-correction, and alpha-test-coverage settings. Poorly filtered mipmaps can produce blurry details, halos around transparent objects, seams at texture edges, or dark color bleeding. For tiled textures, the appropriate wrap mode can be especially important.

Should you flip the texture vertically?

There is no universal rule that DDS textures must be flipped. Some engines and asset conventions expect a vertically inverted image; others do not.

GIMP’s exporter includes Flip image vertically on export. Enable it only when the target game, engine, original asset convention, or a reliable texture viewer confirms that a flip is required. If the source was already vertically flipped, enabling the option again will reverse the correction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a separate DDS plug-in is still relevant

A separate plug-in may still be relevant if you deliberately use:

  • GIMP 2.8 or an earlier release;
  • a legacy modding setup built around the old gimp-dds project;
  • a Linux, macOS, Windows, or store package that failed to include the expected built-in component; or
  • a specialized third-party DDS workflow that GIMP’s exporter does not provide.

The classic gimp-dds documentation describes a plug-in for old GIMP 2.4-era versions and lists historical features such as DXT compression, mipmap generation, cube maps, volume maps, and custom pixel formats. That is historical documentation, not proof that an old binary is a suitable GIMP 3 download. The current GIMP source tree contains DDS under plug-ins/file-dds, reflecting the built-in implementation in modern GIMP.

If you can update GIMP, do that first. An old plug-in may be tied to a particular GIMP major version, operating system, CPU architecture, compiler runtime, and plug-in API.

How to install a legacy DDS plug-in

Use this procedure only for a version-specific legacy requirement. Do not copy an old dds.exe into GIMP 3 simply because an older tutorial says to do so.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Close GIMP completely. Plug-ins are normally scanned when GIMP starts.
  2. Confirm the exact GIMP version and architecture. A GIMP 2.8 plug-in, for example, is not automatically compatible with GIMP 3. A 32-bit plug-in may also fail in a 64-bit installation.
  3. Obtain a package from the original project, a reputable distribution package, or a verifiable source archive. Avoid unidentified download mirrors and executable files with no version or source information.
  4. Open the plug-in folder settings. In GIMP, choose Edit → Preferences → Folders → Plug-ins. On some systems the menu label may be GIMP → Preferences or may use a slightly different path.
  5. Prefer the user plug-in directory shown there instead of modifying GIMP’s installation directory, when the package instructions permit it.
  6. Preserve the package structure. If the download contains a directory and supporting files, do not copy only one binary unless its README explicitly says to do so.
  7. On Linux or macOS, check executable permissions if the plug-in is a binary and the package instructions require them.
  8. Restart GIMP.
  9. Test with a small, backed-up DDS file. Check both File → Open and File → Export As.

GIMP’s plug-in documentation explains version-specific installation considerations, while the plug-in folder preferences documentation explains how to identify active user and system resource directories.

Current GIMP 3 configuration roots

Documented GIMP 3 configuration roots are generally:

Linux:   ~/.config/GIMP/3.2/
Windows: %APPDATA%GIMP3.2
macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/GIMP/3.2/

The user plug-in directory is normally below the relevant GIMP configuration folder, but the exact location can differ for Flatpak, Snap, Microsoft Store, portable, and distribution-specific installations. Verify the active path under Preferences → Folders → Plug-ins instead of assuming that a Windows path from an old tutorial applies.

Troubleshooting DDS in GIMP

DDS does not appear in Open or Export

Check these items in order:

  1. Check the GIMP version. Update from the official GIMP downloads page if you are using an old release.
  2. Check the correct menus. DDS is a file format, so look under File → Open and File → Export As, not necessarily under Filters.
  3. Check the package type. Flatpak, Snap, Microsoft Store, portable, and distribution packages may use different resource locations or package contents.
  4. Remove conflicting legacy plug-ins. Temporarily rename or remove manually installed DDS binaries from the user plug-in directory.
  5. Restart GIMP. GIMP scans plug-ins during startup.
  6. Repair or reinstall GIMP if the official package is incomplete or damaged.

A missing DDS entry does not automatically mean that you need to download a plug-in. It can indicate an outdated version, an incomplete package, an incorrect folder, a failed plug-in load, or a duplicate handler.

“Procedure entry point,” DLL, or plug-in loading errors

These errors commonly indicate that the plug-in does not match the installation. Possible causes include:

  • a GIMP 2 plug-in being used with GIMP 3;
  • a 32-bit plug-in being used with a 64-bit installation;
  • missing dependent DLLs or runtime libraries;
  • a plug-in compiled for another operating-system or GIMP version; or
  • duplicate DDS handlers competing with the built-in handler.

Recover by closing GIMP, removing the manually installed DDS plug-in from the user plug-in directory, restarting GIMP, and testing the built-in importer and exporter. Only reinstall a third-party plug-in if its documentation explicitly confirms compatibility with your exact GIMP version and operating system. GIMP 3 changed the plug-in API, so compatibility with GIMP 2 plug-ins must not be assumed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For deeper diagnosis, start GIMP with verbose plug-in messages:

gimp --verbose --console-messages

The exact command and console behavior can vary by operating system. GIMP’s plug-in architecture documentation explains that plug-ins run as separate processes and provides background for diagnosing failures.

The image opens, but transparency is wrong

Check the following:

  • Does the source actually contain an alpha channel?
  • Was the correct layer exported?
  • Does the game expect BC1, BC3/DXT5, BC7, or a custom alpha convention?
  • Is the target expecting straight or premultiplied alpha?
  • Is indexed transparency being used?
  • Does the game use alpha for visibility, gloss, height, or another packed channel?

BC1 is appropriate only for opaque data or one-bit transparency. Smooth transparency generally requires a format such as BC3/DXT5 or a supported BC7 configuration. Confirm the expected result in the target game or asset viewer.

A normal map looks wrong

Normal maps are data textures, not ordinary color images. Depending on the game, check:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • whether BC5 or a DXT5nm-style layout is required;
  • whether the red and green channels have the expected meaning;
  • whether the green channel needs to be inverted;
  • whether the texture should be treated as linear rather than sRGB; and
  • whether alpha contains height, gloss, or another packed value.

BC5 is a common two-channel choice for normal maps, but it is not universal. The game’s shader and texture specification take priority.

The texture is upside down

Verify the original asset convention and the target engine’s coordinate system. Then try Flip image vertically on export if the evidence indicates that a flip is required. Do not enable it automatically; flipping an already corrected source creates the opposite problem.

Mipmaps are blurry, sharp, or surrounded by halos

Determine whether the game generates mipmaps itself. If it does, export without mipmaps unless its packaging workflow says otherwise. If the DDS must contain mipmaps, generate them in GIMP or a dedicated texture tool and inspect the lower-resolution levels.

Also check:

  • the selected mipmap filter;
  • whether an existing mipmap chain was accidentally exported;
  • edge-pixel bleeding during reduction;
  • alpha-test coverage for cutout textures;
  • gamma correction; and
  • wrap mode for tiled textures.

Cube map, volume map, or texture-array export is disabled

Check the layer prerequisites:

  • Cube maps require six same-sized layers with names ending in Front, Back, Left, Right, Top, and Bottom.
  • Volume maps require same-sized layers.
  • Texture arrays require at least two matching-size layers.

GIMP disables options when the image structure does not meet these requirements. The GIMP DDS export documentation contains the detailed conditions for these output types.

The exported file works in GIMP but not in the game

GIMP successfully opening the exported file proves only that the file is readable by GIMP. It does not prove that the game accepts its:

  • compression family or BC7 variant;
  • DX10 header;
  • color space;
  • alpha interpretation;
  • mipmap count or filter;
  • dimensions;
  • vertical orientation;
  • channel packing; or
  • cube-map or texture-array layout.

Test the exported DDS in the target game, engine, asset viewer, or packaging tool. If replacing an existing texture, compare the new file against the original and change one setting at a time.

When GIMP is not the best final DDS tool

GIMP is well suited to painting, compositing, masking, and pixel editing. A dedicated texture utility may be better for final packaging when you need exact compression control, batch conversion, specialized normal-map processing, or engine-specific mipmap behavior.

A practical two-stage workflow is:

GIMP → edit and save XCF/PNG/TGA → dedicated DDS packager

Microsoft DirectXTex includes texconv, a command-line tool for DDS reading and writing, resizing, format conversion, mipmap generation, and block compression. Its texconv documentation provides installation, syntax, compression, and mipmap examples.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

NVIDIA Texture Tools also supports DDS and KTX export, GPU-compressed texture formats, mipmaps, cube maps, normal maps, and transparency-related workflows. These tools do not eliminate the need to follow the target game’s specifications, but they can provide more specialized control than a general-purpose image editor.

Recommended workflow by situation

Your situation Best next step
You have GIMP 3.2.x Use the built-in DDS importer and exporter. Use BC7 only when the target supports it.
You have GIMP 3.0.x Use built-in DDS support. Update to a current release if practical, especially if you need BC7 export.
You have GIMP 2.10.10 or later Test DDS before installing anything. Update GIMP rather than adding an obsolete plug-in when possible.
You have GIMP 2.8 or older A legacy plug-in may be necessary, but upgrading GIMP is safer and more capable when your workflow permits it.
You need exact BC compression or batch conversion Edit in GIMP, then use DirectXTex, NVIDIA Texture Tools, or another tool specified by the game pipeline.

Do I need a DDS plug-in for GIMP 3?

Normally, no. DDS import and export are built into official GIMP 3 installations. GIMP 3.0 added BC7 import, and GIMP 3.2 added BC7 export. Test File → Open and File → Export As before installing any third-party plug-in.

What is the difference between Save As and Export As in GIMP?

Save As saves the editable GIMP project, normally as an XCF file. Export As creates an external file such as DDS, PNG, or TGA. Save your layered master as XCF, then export a separate DDS for the game.

Which DDS format should I use for a game texture?

Use the format required by the target game. BC1/DXT1 is commonly used for opaque or one-bit-alpha textures, BC3/DXT5 for smooth alpha, BC5 for certain two-channel normal-map workflows, and BC7 for supported modern RGB/RGBA assets. None is universally correct.

Why does my old dds.exe plug-in fail in GIMP 3?

It may have been compiled for GIMP 2, a different architecture, or another operating system. GIMP 3 introduced a new plug-in API. Remove the old plug-in, restart GIMP, and test the built-in DDS handler.

Should I generate mipmaps in GIMP?

Only if the target game or packaging pipeline expects mipmaps in the DDS file. Some engines generate them automatically. Generating an additional or incompatible mipmap chain can cause blurry textures, halos, or loading failures.

Should DDS textures always be flipped vertically?

No. Some engines require a vertical flip and others do not. Enable GIMP’s vertical-flip option only after confirming the target convention or comparing against a known-good asset.

The Bottom Line

For current GIMP users, do not begin by downloading a DDS plug-in. GIMP 2.10.10 and later normally include DDS support, and GIMP 3 provides the modern built-in importer and exporter. Open the texture with File → Open, save your editable work as .xcf, and create the game file with File → Export As and a .dds filename.

Choose compression, alpha, mipmaps, layer handling, and vertical orientation according to the target game or engine—not according to a generic DDS tutorial. Use a legacy plug-in only for an old, version-specific workflow, and use DirectXTex or NVIDIA Texture Tools when specialized DDS packaging is needed.
