How to Create Consistent Characters With DALL·E 3—and What to Use Now

DALL·E 3 cannot guarantee the same character in every generation. Here is the practical legacy workflow—and the more reliable reference-image method in ChatGPT Images and GPT Image 2.

Short answer: DALL·E 3 cannot guarantee the exact same character in independent generations. You can improve continuity by creating a detailed character bible, generating a simple master reference image, repeating the character’s fixed attributes, and changing only one or two scene variables at a time. For a more reliable workflow, edit from that saved reference image with ChatGPT Images or GPT Image 2 instead of recreating the character from text alone.

Table of Contents

The real goal: which kind of consistency do you need?

“Consistent character” can mean several different things. Decide which level matters before you start, because a workflow that is adequate for a social post may be unsuitable for a 30-page picture book or a comic.

Type of consistency What should remain recognizable?
Identity Face shape, hair pattern, eye color, skin or fur markings, apparent age, body proportions, silhouette, scars, and distinctive accessories.
Costume The main garment, color palette, footwear, hat, glasses, backpack, weapon, emblem, or other recurring wardrobe elements.
Style Medium, line quality, rendering method, palette, lighting, detail level, camera language, and character proportions.
Scene continuity The same character remaining recognizable in different locations, poses, expressions, distances, compositions, and interactions.

These levels are related but not identical. A sequence may use the same watercolor style while giving the character a different face. It may preserve the face but change the coat from yellow to green. Identify the elements your audience must recognize instantly, and treat those as invariants.

What DALL·E 3 can—and cannot—do

DALL·E 3 was built to follow detailed text prompts and was presented as a strong general-purpose image generator. Its original ChatGPT announcement highlighted improved prompt following, better handling of details such as text and hands, and multiple image sizes. That made it useful for creating an appealing character illustration from a description, but not for maintaining a permanent character identity. See OpenAI’s original DALL·E 3 announcement for its historical capabilities.

The important limitation is that a repeated name or repeated paragraph is not a character database. DALL·E 3 may reinterpret the face, hair, clothing, age, or proportions each time it generates an image. The official DALL·E 3 API page lists text input and image output, not image input, and now identifies the model as deprecated and removed from the API. That is why a text-only recreation is weaker than editing from a visual reference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not promise or expect any of the following:

  • An identical face every time a name is repeated
  • A permanent character ID that works across chats or accounts
  • A guaranteed same-character result in a new conversation
  • A dependable official character seed
  • Exact clothing, pose, proportions, or facial details from text alone
  • Pixel-level continuity across a sequence of images

Even current image-generation systems can occasionally lose recurring-character or brand-element consistency. OpenAI’s current image-generation guidance treats reference-image editing as a stronger workflow, not as an absolute identity guarantee.

The DALL·E 3 workflow that gives you the best chance

1. Write a character bible first

Do not begin with a complicated scene. First create a compact canonical description containing only the attributes that should remain stable. This is your source of truth. Keep it separate from the details that change from illustration to illustration.

A useful character bible includes:

  • Internal name or label
  • Approximate age and species or human identity
  • Face shape and facial proportions
  • Hair or fur texture, length, color, and parting
  • Eye color and distinctive facial features
  • Skin or fur tone and markings
  • Body build and proportions
  • Signature clothing and accessories
  • Dominant colors and identifying shapes
  • Default personality or emotional quality
  • Illustration medium and style
  • Changes that are prohibited unless explicitly requested

For example:

Character anchor: Mira

Mira is an original 10-year-old girl with a round face, warm brown skin,
large hazel eyes, short curly black hair with one pale-gold hair clip on
the left side, and a small crescent-shaped birthmark below her right eye.
She has a compact childlike build and slightly oversized storybook
proportions.

Her core outfit is a mustard-yellow raincoat, teal leggings, red rain boots,
and a small navy backpack with one silver star patch.

Visual style: hand-painted children's-book watercolor, soft pencil outlines,
warm muted colors, gentle natural lighting, expressive but simple facial
features.

Keep Mira's face, age, hair, birthmark, proportions, backpack, and color
palette unchanged unless explicitly instructed.

The anchor should be specific enough to distinguish Mira from another child, but not so overloaded with tiny details that you cannot tell which instruction failed. A few distinctive, easy-to-see features are generally more useful than a long inventory of fabric textures.

2. Generate a simple master character image

Use the first generation as a reference illustration, not as a finished story page. A plain background, neutral pose, and full-body view make errors easier to spot and give you a useful basis for later scenes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Create an original character reference illustration for a children's book.

Show Mira standing in a neutral three-quarter pose against a plain,
light-colored background.

Character anchor:
[insert the canonical description]

Show her full body clearly. Keep the face, hairstyle, birthmark, body
proportions, raincoat, leggings, boots, backpack, and colors easy to inspect.
Use the specified watercolor storybook style. Do not add text, extra
characters, logos, or a busy background.

Generate several candidates if necessary, then choose the one with the clearest face, most coherent clothing, and least distracting background. OpenAI’s current image prompting guide recommends the same general principle: establish a reusable character anchor before continuing a multi-image story.

Inspect the anchor before approving it

  • Is the apparent age correct?
  • Are the hair, eyes, skin or fur, and distinguishing mark visible?
  • Are the body proportions appropriate?
  • Are the main clothing colors and accessories unambiguous?
  • Is the style the one you can maintain throughout the project?
  • Did the model accidentally add text, logos, extra accessories, or another character?

If the answer is no, regenerate the anchor now. Do not use an inconsistent image as the foundation for every later scene.

3. Save the approved master immediately

Keep the image file and the exact prompt together. Also record the date, project name, conversation link, and any prompt revision shown by the interface. Add brief notes describing what is correct in the image and what must not be copied if it is an accidental artifact.

Use the original approved anchor as your master. If a later image has a slightly different face or costume, do not automatically promote that derivative to the new master. Otherwise, small changes can accumulate from one generation to the next.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Separate invariants from variables

For every new scene, use three blocks:

  1. Character invariants: the features that must stay fixed.
  2. Style invariants: the medium, palette, lighting, and visual language that must stay fixed.
  3. Scene variables: the pose, expression, setting, action, framing, and temporary wardrobe changes.

Repeat the critical invariants rather than assuming the model will remember them. A practical DALL·E 3 prompt might look like this:

Use the same character design as the reference.

Character invariants:
- Same round face and simple expressive facial features
- Same warm brown skin
- Same large hazel eyes
- Same short curly black hair
- Same pale-gold hair clip on the left side
- Same crescent birthmark below the right eye
- Same 10-year-old age and compact childlike proportions
- Same mustard-yellow raincoat
- Same teal leggings and red rain boots
- Same navy backpack with one silver star patch

Style invariants:
- Hand-painted children's-book watercolor
- Soft pencil outlines
- Warm muted colors
- Gentle natural lighting
- No photorealism or 3D rendering

New scene:
Mira is kneeling beside a small stream in a misty forest, gently helping a
lost rabbit. Show a medium-wide shot at eye level. Change only the pose,
environment, and facial expression. Keep her character design unchanged.

This structure is clearer than repeatedly saying “make the same character again.” It tells the model what is fixed and what is allowed to move.

5. Change one or two variables at a time

Small iterations are easier to evaluate and repair. First create the scene with the established design. Then adjust the pose or expression in a separate follow-up if needed.

Good follow-up:

Keep the character's face, hair, clothing, proportions, lighting, and style
unchanged. Change only the pose so she is standing and holding the lantern
with both hands.

Risky follow-up:

Make her older, change the outfit, put her underwater, give her wings,
change the art style, make it cinematic, and show three different poses.

The second request changes identity, costume, environment, style, and composition at once. If the result fails, you will not know which instruction caused the drift. OpenAI’s prompting guidance recommends starting with a clean base prompt and refining through smaller, single-change follow-ups.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prompt templates for recurring characters

Replace the bracketed sections with your own anchor. Keep the stable block unchanged throughout a project.

New pose

Use the approved character reference and preserve all character and style
invariants. Change only the pose: [describe one clear pose]. Keep the same
camera language, clothing, proportions, face, hair, and accessories.

New background

Preserve the approved character exactly, including face, hair, age, body
proportions, clothing, colors, and accessories. Change only the background
to [location]. Keep the character prominent and do not add props that cover
the face or clothing.

New facial expression

Keep the character design, pose, clothing, lighting, and background unchanged.
Change only the expression to [joyful / worried / surprised / quietly curious].
Keep the same facial structure and distinguishing mark.

Temporary seasonal clothing change

For this scene only, replace the raincoat with a red wool cloak. Preserve the
character's face, hair, birthmark, age, body proportions, boots, backpack,
and watercolor storybook style. Do not treat the cloak as a permanent change
to the character anchor.

Children's-book page

Illustrate one children's-book page using the approved character reference.

Character invariants:
[insert the unchanged character block]

Scene:
[describe the action and setting]

Composition:
Leave clear negative space for page layout. Keep the character's face and
signature clothing visible. Do not add text, captions, borders, logos, or
watermarks.

If you need lettering, it is usually safer to add the text in a layout or illustration application afterward rather than relying on the image model to place a complete page of typography accurately.

Character sheets: useful reference, not a guarantee

A turnaround sheet can expose differences between front, profile, and three-quarter views, so it may be useful during character development. However, DALL·E 3 can still vary the face, hair, clothing, or proportions between panels. Treat the result as a collection of references, not as a model-controlled production turnaround.

Create a clean character reference sheet for the same original character.

Show four separate views of Mira:
1. Front view
2. Left-facing profile
3. Right-facing profile
4. Full-body three-quarter view

Use the exact same face, hair, birthmark, body proportions, clothing,
backpack, colors, and watercolor storybook style in every view.

Arrange the views clearly on a plain background. Do not add labels, text,
extra accessories, extra characters, or alternate costumes.

If the panels disagree, do not use the sheet as your master. Choose the cleanest single image, or create separate corrected references.

Keeping the visual style consistent

Lock the style separately from the character. A stable style block helps prevent the model from reinterpreting the person every time the visual treatment changes.

Style invariants:
- Hand-painted watercolor children's-book illustration
- Soft graphite-like outlines
- Warm, muted earth-tone palette
- Gentle diffuse lighting
- Slightly oversized expressive heads
- Minimal background detail
- No photorealism
- No 3D rendering
- No cinematic color grading

Keep the following stable when continuity matters:

  • Medium and rendering method
  • Line quality
  • Color palette
  • Lighting direction and softness
  • Camera language and typical framing
  • Character proportions
  • Aspect ratio, where practical
  • Detail level and background complexity

Changing from “watercolor storybook” to “cinematic anime concept art” midway through a project is not merely a surface change. The model may reinterpret the face, anatomy, costume, and proportions along with the style. Describe visual properties rather than requesting the style of a living artist; DALL·E 3 was designed to decline requests for images in the style of living artists. You can specify medium, palette, line work, lighting, texture, and composition instead.

Keeping clothing consistent

Clothing is often easier to recognize than a face when it has a simple silhouette and one or two distinctive features. Use a dominant garment color, a clearly placed accessory, and a memorable shape.

For example, “a mustard-yellow raincoat, red rain boots, and a navy backpack with one silver star patch on the front” is more useful than “casual outdoor clothes.” Specify placement when it matters: “the silver star patch is on the front of the backpack,” not merely “a backpack with a star.”

Avoid excessive tiny details, complicated repeating patterns, many interchangeable accessories, and ambiguous wardrobe descriptions. If you change the outfit, say whether the change is temporary or permanent. Do not change the wardrobe and pose in the same troubleshooting attempt.

Scenes with multiple characters

Multiple characters make attribute swapping more likely. The model may give one person another character’s hair, coat, or accessory even when both descriptions are present.

  1. Establish each character separately before combining them.
  2. Give them clearly different silhouettes, colors, hairstyles, or accessories.
  3. Use explicit labels such as Mira and Jonah.
  4. Put each character in a separate paragraph or labeled block.
  5. State where each person stands in the frame.
  6. Begin with two characters before attempting a large cast.
  7. If the result remains unreliable, create them separately and composite them in an editor.
Mira stands on the left. Jonah stands on the right.

Mira:
[fixed description for Mira]

Jonah:
[fixed description for Jonah]

Preserve each character's own face, hair, clothing, colors, proportions,
and accessories. Do not exchange attributes between them.

Repeating names does not itself preserve identity. Labels help organize the instruction, but the visual differences and reference images do the more important work.

Should you use a seed?

Some older community tutorials and experiments discussed seed-like values. But the current official DALL·E 3 documentation does not document a user-facing seed parameter as a dependable character-consistency feature, and the model has been removed from the API. A seed mentioned in a historical interface or unofficial workflow should not be assumed to work across conversations, accounts, product surfaces, or model versions.

Even if a particular interface accepts a seed-like value, it does not replace a visual reference and does not guarantee the same face, clothes, pose, or proportions. For a maintainable workflow, save the approved image and use reference-based editing instead.

The better current workflow: ChatGPT Images

For a new no-code project, use the current ChatGPT Images experience rather than starting every page from DALL·E 3 text prompts. OpenAI’s current ChatGPT Images documentation describes image creation, image uploads, direct conversational edits, and selection-based editing. The Help Center also says ChatGPT Images 2.0 is available across ChatGPT tiers.

  1. Open Images in ChatGPT and generate the initial character anchor, or upload an existing reference.
  2. Select the strongest approved image.
  3. Reopen it or upload it when beginning the next scene.
  4. Use the selection tool when only a specific area should change.
  5. Describe the permitted changes and explicitly protect the face, hair, costume, and other invariants.
  6. Make one small edit at a time.
  7. Save every approved version as a new file while retaining the original master.

For example:

Use this uploaded image as the character reference.

Preserve the character's exact face, facial features, hairstyle, skin tone,
age, body proportions, expression style, and clothing design.

Change only:
- The background to a snowy mountain village
- The pose so the character is holding a lantern
- The lighting to soft blue evening light

Do not redesign the character, change the camera angle, add accessories, or
alter the backpack, boots, hair clip, or birthmark.

Reference editing is stronger because the model can inspect the character’s actual visual features rather than reconstructing them from words. It is still not an absolute identity lock. ChatGPT’s documentation warns that selection areas are not always precise and that an edit can extend beyond the selected region. If that happens, use a tighter selection, describe nearby protected elements, and undo or retry from the last approved version.

How to find the legacy DALL·E GPT while it remains available

As of August 10, 2026, the temporary route is:

  1. Open ChatGPT.
  2. Choose Explore GPTs in the sidebar.
  3. Search for DALL·E.
  4. Open the official DALL·E GPT.
  5. Start a fresh conversation for the project.

OpenAI documents Explore GPTs as the general GPT-browsing path, and its Images Help Center identifies the DALL·E GPT as the route for continuing to use DALL·E in ChatGPT. These labels may change, and the official DALL·E GPT is scheduled to retire on August 30, 2026, so do not build a long-term project around this route.

API workflow for current projects: GPT Image 2

Do not begin a new API integration with DALL·E 3. OpenAI’s current recommendation is GPT Image 2, which supports image inputs and outputs and is described as processing image inputs at high fidelity. For a single generation or edit, the Image API is appropriate; for a conversational, multi-turn editing workflow, OpenAI’s image-generation guide also describes using the Responses API.

The following is an illustrative Python edit workflow. It starts with the approved master image and asks GPT Image 2 to change only the scene:

from openai import OpenAI
import base64

client = OpenAI()

prompt = """
Continue the illustrated story using the uploaded image as the character
reference.

Preserve the character's exact face, hairstyle, birthmark, age, body
proportions, clothing, backpack, colors, and illustration style.

Change only the scene: the character is kneeling beside a stream in a snowy
forest and helping a small rabbit. Do not redesign the character or add
text, logos, or watermarks.
"""

result = client.images.edit(
    model='gpt-image-2',
    image=[open('character_anchor.png', 'rb')],
    prompt=prompt,
    size='1024x1536',
    quality='medium',
)

image_bytes = base64.b64decode(result.data[0].b64_json)

with open('scene-02.png', 'wb') as f:
    f.write(image_bytes)

For GPT Image 2, do not add the older input_fidelity parameter. OpenAI’s current guide says GPT Image 2 handles image inputs at high fidelity automatically and does not allow that parameter to be changed.

Keep the same production discipline in the API as in ChatGPT: maintain a master reference, store prompts with outputs, describe invariants on every edit, and create a new approved version rather than overwriting the source.

When DALL·E 3 is good enough—and when it is not

Requirement Practical choice
A few loosely related social images or mood-board concepts DALL·E 3’s text workflow may be sufficient if “similar” is acceptable.
A new project in 2026 Use ChatGPT Images or GPT Image 2 because DALL·E 3 is deprecated.
Repeated scenes with moderate identity continuity Use a saved anchor and reference-image editing.
A 30-page picture book or comic with strict face continuity Use reference editing, then inspect and correct every approved image; consider compositing or a specialized character pipeline.
Animation turnarounds, licensed character assets, or exact game models Use vector drawing, 3D models, compositing, or another controlled production workflow rather than relying on text-to-image alone.

No image model should be described as an exact character-lock system without qualification. The more costly a continuity error is, the more important it becomes to edit from a reference and manually correct or composite the result.

Troubleshooting: why the character changed

Problem Likely cause Recovery
Face changes The model recreated the character from text instead of preserving a visual reference. Return to the best anchor, use an image-editing workflow, and repeat the face and hair invariants.
Hair changes The hairstyle was described generically or omitted in the follow-up. Repeat exact length, texture, color, part, shape, and accessory placement.
Clothing changes color Too many competing attributes or vague color language. Simplify the wardrobe and state exact garment colors and distinctive placements.
The character looks older or younger Age and proportions were not treated as invariants. Restate age, build, facial proportions, and childlike or adult body proportions.
Style drifts The style block changed between prompts. Use one fixed block for medium, line quality, palette, lighting, and detail level.
The background overwhelms the character The original anchor was created in a complicated scene. Make a new plain-background anchor and use it as the master.
Two characters exchange traits The descriptions were interleaved or the characters look too similar. Use labeled sections, assign left/right positions, increase visual differences, or create and composite them separately.
A new pose changes the face Identity and pose were altered in one broad regeneration. Start from the approved image and edit only the pose.
A selection edit changes nearby areas The editor’s selection is approximate. Use a tighter selection, protect nearby features in the prompt, and retry from the previous approved image.
Later images drift progressively Each derivative image became the next reference. Return to the original approved master rather than continuing from the most recent variation.
A seed has no effect The value is unsupported, product-specific, or no longer applies. Stop relying on it and use the saved image reference.
The DALL·E option disappears The legacy DALL·E GPT has been retired or the interface has changed. Move the project to ChatGPT Images or GPT Image 2; the announced retirement date is August 30, 2026.

A practical consistency checklist

  • Have you defined the character’s age, face, hair, markings, proportions, clothing, and signature accessory?
  • Did you create a plain-background master image?
  • Is the master itself consistent and free of accidental details?
  • Are character invariants separated from scene variables?
  • Are you repeating the critical invariants in each prompt?
  • Are you changing only one or two variables per iteration?
  • Are you using the same style, palette, lighting, aspect ratio, and camera language?
  • Are you keeping the original approved master instead of chaining from a drifting derivative?
  • Are you using a visual reference for work where identity matters?
  • Have you stopped treating a seed as a guarantee?
  • Are you saving the prompt and image together for every approved version?

Bottom line for painters, illustrators, and storytellers

DALL·E 3 can help you design a recognizable character, but it cannot reliably lock that character across independent text-to-image generations. The legacy best practice is to create a concise character bible, generate a clean anchor image, repeat the fixed attributes, keep the style block stable, and make small changes.

The more dependable modern method is visual continuity: save the approved image, feed it into an editing-capable workflow, and specify exactly what may change. For no-code work, that means ChatGPT Images. For new API projects, it means GPT Image 2. Neither provides an absolute guarantee, but both offer a much stronger foundation than asking a deprecated text-only model to reinvent the same character on every page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can DALL·E 3 make the exact same face every time?

No. DALL·E 3 can follow a detailed description and produce characters that feel similar, but repeated text does not guarantee the same face, hair, age, proportions, or clothing. Use a saved visual reference and image editing when identity matters.

Does DALL·E 3 have a seed for locking a character?

The current official DALL·E 3 documentation does not establish a user-facing seed parameter as a dependable character-consistency control. Historical or unofficial seed workflows may be version-specific and should not replace a reference image.

Should I use the same ChatGPT conversation?

Using the same conversation can help preserve context in a ChatGPT workflow, but it is not a guaranteed character memory or identity lock. Keep the approved image and canonical description yourself, and upload or reopen the reference for important edits.

Does a longer prompt improve character consistency?

Not automatically. Specific descriptions of a few stable, distinctive features help, but an overloaded prompt can create competing instructions and make failures harder to diagnose. Separate invariants from scene variables and refine in small steps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I upload a reference image to DALL·E 3?

The official DALL·E 3 API documentation lists image input as unsupported, so do not assume the API accepts a reference image. For current reference-based editing, use ChatGPT Images or GPT Image 2, which support image inputs and edits.

How many characters can I put in one prompt?

There is no useful promise that a large cast will remain consistent. Two characters are easier to manage than many. Establish each separately, use distinct silhouettes and labeled descriptions, and composite characters separately when the result is unreliable.

Why did the clothes change even though the face stayed similar?

Clothing may not have been treated as an invariant, or the prompt may contain too many competing wardrobe details. Use a simple, distinctive silhouette, repeat exact colors and accessory placement, and change clothing in a separate, explicitly temporary instruction.

Why did the art style drift?

Style language may have changed, or a new style request caused the model to reinterpret the entire character. Keep one style block covering medium, line quality, palette, lighting, proportions, detail level, and camera language.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I make a consistent comic or children’s book with DALL·E 3?

You can create loosely consistent concept art or pages, but DALL·E 3 alone is not a reliable production pipeline for strict face continuity across a long book or comic. Use reference-image editing, inspect every image, and consider compositing, vector art, 3D, or a specialized character workflow.

Is DALL·E 3 still available?

As of August 10, 2026, the official DALL·E GPT remains available in ChatGPT through Explore GPTs, but OpenAI says it will retire on August 30, 2026. DALL·E 3 has already been deprecated and removed from the OpenAI API.

What should I use after August 30, 2026?

Use ChatGPT Images for a no-code workflow with uploads, conversational edits, and selection-based edits. For API projects, use GPT Image 2 with the approved character image as an input. These tools improve reference-based continuity but still do not offer an absolute identity guarantee.

The Bottom Line

Use DALL·E 3 as a character-design starting point, not as a character-lock system. Build a canonical character anchor, save the best image, repeat the invariants, and change scenes incrementally. For new work, move to ChatGPT Images or GPT Image 2 and edit from the approved reference image.
